How do resource smoothing and resource leveling differ from each other?

Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

The accompanying diagram, sourced from the APM Body of Knowledge, provides a comparison between the two approaches.

Resource levelling and smoothing options (APM, 2019, p. 179)

At a more significant level of impact, certain projects undergo more than just rescheduling or resource allocation adjustments. They may undergo a reevaluation of their project scope by the project sponsor. This involves a broader analysis of the entire project and requires reconsideration of how time, cost, and quality interact within the project.

A prime example is the review of large-scale infrastructure projects like railways. Such projects often undergo rescaling due to increased costs, resulting in significant deviations from the original plans. The consequences of these revisions can affect the client and a wider range of stakeholders and may even result in the loss of subsequent work opportunities (Kerzner, 2009, p. 529).

Now, let’s consider MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event that you have been following in the course videos thus far. When examining the provided figure, do you think it would be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario?

  1. An organization like MTD is keen about meeting deadlines.Hence ,when there’s an issue with resources short fall,I would rather subscribe to resource smoothing that would afford us delivery on planned date as long as quality will not be compromised.

  2. No, I do not think they could have applied a resource leveling approach because the MTD event would most likely have been fixed, and hence a reschedule of the activities would have seriously affected the outcome of the event.

  3. Every project there is a paramount outcome. As a PM on MTD , knowing fully well that deadline most be met. I will subscribe to resource smoothing, as this will be the best approach. Increase in cost might be the price to pay, However, project will be met and delivered to the client before deadline. As long as QUALITY is not compromise in the long run.
However, in a situation where deadline can be adjusted. I will always subscribe to resource leveler, as it helps one to manage resources better, reschedule if need be because I believe above all things, effective management of resources is the core of a PM job.

  4. Resource smoothing, prioritizing the maintenance of original project deadlines while accepting increased costs, is the optimal strategy for MTD’s water project. With fixed deadlines crucial to event-based projects like MTD’s, adjustments to the timeline are limited. Thus, adhering strictly to agreed delivery times is paramount. In contrast, resource leveling, which focuses on rescheduling without altering resource capacity, is less suitable for fixed deadline scenarios like MTD’s, where flexibility is limited.

  5. For me in advising MTD. while both resource smoothing and resource leveling aim to optimize resource utilization in project management, they differ in their primary objectives and approaches. Resource smoothing focuses on maintaining a steady resource demand over time to avoid peaks and valleys, while resource leveling prioritizes resolving resource conflicts and balancing resource demand with resource availability to create a realistic project schedule

  6. For a project like the MTD water project that often revolves around event, events have a fixed time which means much adjustments cannot be made to the timeline.

I think the resources smoothing approach would work best and resource levelling wouldn’t work. Resource levelling would work in situations where deadlines are flexible.

  7. Considering MTD, I think the best approach should be resource levelling though it may not be easy to adjust the project delivery date with collaboration and proper communication to the project sponsors it is achievable.
Considering the cost, man power training and skills required for that that kind of project it wouldn’t be advisable to apply resource smoothing.

Using MTD, water installation event company based on the Glasgow event project. To apply a resource leveling approach will not be possible at it would affect the project end date invariably affecting the event, resource smoothing approach is best option in which the planned deadline is intact, increase resources which increases project cost.

  9. Considering MTD water installation during the Glasgow event.
It won’t be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in the scenario as it would affect the project deadline. MTD is a water installation event company which means they deal with strict deadlines from clients. The stakeholders of the events has already planned and are anticipating the commencement of their event and so it won’t be feasible to reschedule.

  10. Considering MTD and the Glasgow event, it would not be feasible to implement a resource levelling approach in this scenario, as the MTD water installation project falls under a strict timeline of completion, with events and stakeholders already anticipating the date of completion. Therefore, it would be more feasible to implement a resource smoothing approach, as the timeline for completion would remain the same, even if there would be an increase in thee operating and running costs.

  11. Using the MTD project, the best approach will be Resource Smoothing because it takes into account the fact that the project needs overtime to be able to meet up with schedule. Using the Resource levelling approach will be for when/if the time needed for is extended, which will have an effect on the project cost.

  12. Applying a resource leveling strategy to MTD’s water installation events is definitely feasible, however it would not be as simple as it would be in a manufacturing scenario. In this instance, resources are individuals with various schedules and skill sets rather than tangible components or commodities that can easily moved about and assigned as needed. Nevertheless, there are still methods for allocating resources so that the business can achieve its objectives as effectively as possible.
Having an adequate supply of skilled labor accessible for every event is one technique to implement resource leveling. This can entail assembling a “resource pool” of laborers with diverse skill sets and assigning them to projects.
To illustrate the timeline of each event and identify potential conflicts before they become a problem, it would also be beneficial to think about utilizing a Gantt chart or other comparable tool. In addition, MTD can think about employing cross-training to make sure that several employees possess the abilities required for every event in the event that an employee becomes unavailably absent.

  13. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

In this case scenario, resource smoothing is best option for MTD because deadline has been fixed and they need to deliver on the said date. They have to adhere strictly to the agreed time of delivery between them and the client.

  14. With MTD’s project, resource levelling is not an option because this tampers with the project’s deadline which shouldn’t be as the project appears to be an emergency one, hence, resource smoothing is best, though with increased cost, experts are introduced at some point of the project, helping deliver the project within deadline and also delivering within the wanted capacity.

  15. For the MTD project it can be feasible to use resource levelling. The Project is divided into sub projects and phases. As the phases progresses projects that match these resources are brought on board to perfectly execute the whole project on budget.

  16. For the MTD water installation event, opting for resource smoothing is the preferred approach over resource leveling. This choice is grounded in the recognition of MTD’s adherence to stringent project timelines, dictated by customer orders and the designated event schedule. Implementing the leveling approach, which involves altering the delivery timeline, carries the risk of adversely affecting the event. MTD’s project commencement and conclusion are intricately tied to the event timeline, making any adjustments to their timeline a potential disruptor to the overall event schedule. Therefore, it is advisable to invest in deploying additional resources, incurring increased costs, rather than compromising the timeline integrity for both MTD’s project and the overarching event timeline.

  18. The discussion on the possibility of applying a resource leveling approach To the MTD water installation project

According to Usman Ghani (2022), Resource leveling is a project management technique that involves resolving over-allocation or scheduling conflicts to ensure a project can be completed with the available resources. Resources include the time, materials, or tools needed to complete a project. This definition concurred with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) definition which states that resource leveling is a technique to help you (project managers) better accommodate resource constraints by adjusting the start and finish dates of a project. In doing so, you can make realistic project deadlines without overworking your team and increasing the total cost of the project. Given the above, it is safe to say that resource leveling is not an appropriate approach to the MTD issue. MTD is an organization with a global outlook and the water project is not a stand-alone project. The issue with the MTD project borders on resource augmentation which is the process of increasing the resources available to an organization to improve its performance or capabilities. This can include adding physical resources such as equipment or personnel, increasing access to financial resources, or investing in new technology
The issues with the water installation project are:
    • The need for additional toilets
    • Shortfall in the volume of water supplied
    • The need to put an extra buffer in place
    • The need to use water tankers as a contingency support
    • Having an interface with the local authorities to increase the volume of water, and
    • Adherence to the client’s timeline
The issues itemized above can be resolved using the resource smoothing approach, also known as time-constrained scheduling, it is a technique used to optimize resources to deliver a project without changing the delivery date. Smoothing will use free/total float and will not change the critical path. The constraints of using resource smoothing are:
    • A possible delay in the completion of certain activities.
    • Likely a demand for a few extra resources.
    • The challenge of the activity dependencies not adequately changed
    • A possible difficulty in adding more tasks or removing strain tasks.

  19. Taking the MTD’s Glasgow project as a context, there cannot be any availability of floating which will therefore make resource levelling a bad strategy here. Hence, resource smoothing could be employed by adding new resources such as water source or personnel to ensure that the deadline is met. Also, overtime may really be considered in order to ensure that all necessary measures are put in place within the agreed time.

  20. Considering MTD, the best method to use is resource smoothing which involves using overtime so as to meet up with the schedule.

Resource levelling approach can only be used if critical activities duration is extended which will definitely affect the project cost.

  21. With respect to the MTD Glasgow event, resource leveling will be a wrong approach because the project deadline cannot be changed. The entire project objective was to supply drinking water to an event and the date of the event was fixed.
Resource smoothing will be the right approach although it will impact the project cost.

  22. Now, let’s consider MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event that you have been following in the course videos thus far. When examining the provided figure, do you think it would be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario?

    ——————————————–

I do not think resource leveling will work because it is solely focused on rescheduling and there is possible impact on project deadlines. A company like MTD can not afford to reschedule because their client event date is fixed.

But the project could be subject to revision, project sponsors are invited to a roundtable to evaluate or revise the scope .

  23. Resource smoothing aims at maintaining original project deadlines while increasing project costs. Whilst Resource leveling focuses on rescheduling with possible impacts on project timelines without altering the project capacity.

  24. Resource levelling approach could be used by extending the critical activities duration. Though that would affect the cost. Crticial activities could be started on time by extending the duration of it so as to spread workload for more extended days.

But I feel the best method would be resource smoothing by using overtime so as to meet up with the schedule.

  25. Resource smoothing will work best in MTD event because there is a limited time frame and they might not necessarily be able to reschedule so increasing the project costs and preserving the planed deadline will be the best option

  26. MTD projects take their origin from global or national programs such as it being announced as Official Sponsor of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Their projects are not stand-alone. Thus challenges encountered require remediation in the areas of resource increase which ensures project completion within allotted floats. These increases include
    1. Additional toilets added
    2. Shortfall in the volume of water:
    I. An extra buffer put in place
ii. More contingencies such as tanker support
iii. Speaking with local authorities with a view to increase the volume of water.
These decisions had to be made in line with the client’s timelines adhered to.

The foregoing decisions indicate the nature of the project which is linear with dependencies and non-flexible deadlines. Strictly, resource-smoothing is the right fit.

Resource-leveling would have scored a point had the MTD projects been stand-alone, bearing the undeniable label of Agile or iterative. Such would have gulped in either or all of the intrinsic elements of resource-leveling listed below:

    1. Delay non-critical activities within their available floats
    2. Extend non-critical activity duration within their available floats
    3. Delay critical activities
    4. Extend critical activities durations
    5. Split an activity into non-sequential activity.

  27. Resource leveling focuses on rescheduling with possible impacts on project timelines, however it does not alter the project capacity. So it is very feasible to implement this approach on many projects types including the MTD and Glasgow event.

  28. Considering that events are planned are held in a pre-adopted and limited period of time, I don’t think it would be possible to apply resource levelling in this scenario, as the deadline cannot be extended.

  29. Blessing Williams

Resource-leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead underscores rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines. This intrinsic quality of resource-leveling makes it not the right fit for remediation in the MTD Glasgow project.

    3. Delay critical activities
    4. Extend critical activities durations
    5. Split an activity into non-sequential activity.

  30. Resource leveling by its nature does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

This characteristic of rescheduling, and the impact on project deadlines presents resource leveling as not the likely strategy for handling resource overload in the MTD-Glasgow Project.

MTD projects are heavily dependent on global and national programs from which they derive their relevance such as its being announced as an Official Supporter of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Their projects are not stand-alone.

The water installation at Glasgow was necessitated by the sports event taking place with a fixed date and venue announced and much publicity prescribed. And thus any remediation would have to be in the areas of procuring additional resources to ensure the timeline and planned end date is strictly adhered to. A reschedule
    was not optionable.

Resource-leveling incorporates the following strategies with cognizance of the flexibility of the project to drive its outcomes:

    1.Delay non-critical activities within their available floats/timelines

  31. Considering that events are planned are held in a pre-adopted and limited period of time, I don’t think it would be possible to apply resource levelling in this scenario, as the deadline cannot be extended.

  32. It is certainly possible to apply a resource levelling approach to MTD’s water installation events, although it may not be as straightforward as it would be for a manufacturing setting. In this case, resources are not physical parts or materials that can be easily moved around and allocated as needed, but rather people with different skills and schedules. That said, there are still ways to level resources so that the company can meet its goals in the most efficient way possible.

One way to apply resource levelling would be to ensure that there are enough workers with the right skills available for each event. This could involve creating a “resource pool” of workers with various skill sets, and then scheduling them to work on events based on their availability and the needs of the event. It may also be helpful to consider using a Gantt chart or similar tool to visualize the timeline of each event, so that potential conflicts can be identified and resolved before they become a problem. Additionally, MTD could also consider using cross-training to ensure that multiple workers have the skills needed for each event, in case one worker is unexpectedly unavailable.

Another approach to resource levelling would be to stagger the start dates of events, so that they don’t all occur at the same time and require the same number of workers. For example, if MTD knows that it has a limited number of plumbers available, it could schedule events so that they don’t all need plumbers at the same time. This would allow the company to use its resources more efficiently, and avoid overloading any one team of workers. Of course, this approach may not always be possible due to the specific needs of the events, but it is worth considering.

Lastly, MTD could also consider using outside contractors to fill any gaps in its workforce. This could be especially helpful for events that require specialized skills that are not available within the company. By bringing in outside help when needed, MTD can ensure that it has the resources it needs to complete its events, without overloading its existing staff. This approach can also provide the added benefit of bringing in fresh ideas and perspectives, which can help to improve the overall quality of the events.

In conclusion, resource levelling is certainly possible in the context of MTD’s water installation events. However, it may require some creative thinking and flexibility to make it work effectively.

  33. Yes, Applying a resource leveling approach could definitely help balance the resources efficiently for the event. It can help ensure that resources are used effectively without overloading any particular aspect of the event. It’s a great way to manage resources smoothly!

  34. Resource leveling involves resolving overallocation or scheduling conflicts to ensure a project can be completed with the available resources. For MTD, a re-evaluation of the project scope by the PM may be required and the estimated timelines will have to be adjusted to ensure quality and optimal product and a maximization of available resources, workload and personnel.

    1. Resource levelling aims at stabilizing workload and maintaining project costs, It is ideally possible to apply resource levelling in the MTD events. Using additional resources and extending durations will help to balance the workload of employees, curbs risk of errors and also improves the quality of deliverables.

  35. Resource leveling is modifying the project’s start and end dates in accordance with the availability of both internal and external resources. Making sure a project can be finished within budget, schedule, and scope restrictions while utilizing the resources at hand is the aim.
Regarding MTD at the Glasgow event (the water installation events); Additional resources might be required if the project deadline is to be kept. The project deadline may be extended if the objective is to complete the work using the resources that are currently available. This is to guarantee the project’s output quality.

  36. Resource leveling will help balance the workload on resources in order to align usage with their avaliable capacity helping them to meet the requried deadline.

  37. Resource leveling will be best for MTD because it will help balance the workload on resources in order to align usage with their avaliable capacity helping them to meet the requried deadline.

  38. Considering MTD’s water installation events in Glasgow, applying a resource leveling approach may be feasible. This method involves redistributing resources without altering project capacity, which could help ensure that resources are utilized efficiently without impacting the current capacity of the team. By adjusting the scheduling of tasks and resources, MTD could potentially manage workload fluctuations and maintain project timelines without significant changes to their current resource capacity.

  39. On the case of MTD and Event Glasgow, resource smoothing methodology can not be compromised on this project. Even though, the time, cost and quality are very important elements to consider, the fact remains that the purpose of this water projects awarded to MTD is for the purpose of the Glasgow Sport events that has already been fixed to commence on a particular date.
Every stakeholders of this events must have been involved, and it’ll be too late to fail in delivering at a stretched time beyond the agreed project delivering date.

Resource smoothing which should be the best approach against Resource Leveling should be the second to non decision. The truth holds that, it’s going to add more to cost because of some overtime workload, add more hands if the need be among others, the implication this may carry may include increase in domestic accidents at the work place, health risks among the workers, increase in the budget allocated.
Despite all these, the truth remains that, nothing can be better than making a project of the kind delivered at the slated time and or date.

  40. Resource leveling may be better since it won’t alter the project resources capability but gives room for improvement.
So, it’s better adjust the project duration than adding more costs.

  41. MTD did not use the resource-levelling approach which was not possible due to the delivery dateline. Rather they used resource-smoothing by requesting for the additional volume of water from a nearby facility.

  42. Resource leveling may be better since it won’t alter the project resources capability but gives room for adjustments and to me it’s better to affect the project duration than adding more costs.

  43. For a MTD, resource leveling would probably be the better option. Since the company’s goal is likely to complete the installation as quickly as possible, the goal of resource leveling (completing the project quickly) aligns with the company’s overall goal. The main drawback of resource leveling is that it can result in periods of underutilization for resources. However, in the case of a water installation company, it’s likely that the resources (such as construction workers) are specialized and not easily interchangeable, so the risk of underutilization is lower.

  44. Resource leveling will be better for MTD because it will not alter the existing resource capacity but will give room for rescheduling which will not have impact on the project deadlines.

  45. Resource smoothing is used when the time constraint takes priority. The objective is to complete the work by the required date while avoiding peaks and troughs of resource demand.
Resource levelling is used when limits on the availability of resources are paramount.

  46. Resource leveling will be better for MTD because it will not alter the existing resource capacity but will give room for rescheduling which may have impact on the project deadlines.

  47. Resource leveling will be best for MTD because it gives room for because it won’t affect the duration or deadline of the project

  48. Resource levelling maintain the project deadline but increase the resources, manpower and it doesn’t alter the project resources, in the case of MTD the water installation event, resource levelling might be possible cause as it won’t affect the project deadline and the scope of the project just addition resources will be added.

  49. Resource smoothing seems to be the best approach
For the MTD water project applying resource smoothing is the best because it will focus on meeting or allocating more resources to projects to ensure that the preserved planned deadline is kept
If resources leveling is applied the team will experience set backs which will make them not to meet up with the deadline

  50. Resource leveling involves adjusting the start and finish dates of project activities based on the availability of internal and external resources. The goal is to ensure that a project can be completed using the available resources while adhering to time, cost, and scope constraints.
For the MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event If the goal is to keep the current project deadline, more resources may need to be available. If the goal is to run the project with currently available resources, the project deadline may be extended. This is to ensure the quality of the project output.

  51. Applying a resource leveling approach to the MTD water installation events company in Glasgow would involve smoothing out resource allocation to avoid peaks and troughs in resource usage. It could be feasible depending on factors like the availability of skilled labor, equipment, and the project’s timeline. Utilizing the APM Body of Knowledge can provide valuable insights and guidelines for implementing such approaches effectively.

  52. Williamson
    Cohort13
Resource-leveling is a project management technique that aims to smooth out the workload of resources (e.g., people, equipment) over time. In a water installation events company (MTD)
, resources like personnel, equipment, and vehicles are typically busy during peak seasons and less busy during off-seasons. Applying resource-leveling techniques could help balance the workload and prevent overloading or underutilizing resources, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable operation.

  53. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.
On the case of the MTD and Glasgow event, Resource leveling will not help in the case where the deadline of the project must be strongly adhered to. Resource smoothing should be employed here, and where Resource leveling is adopted considering the quality of the contaminated water, proper negotiations with the sponsors and the stakeholders must be taken. However resources and cost must be incurred as the deadline is rescheduled.

  54. In the case of MTD, the issue of contamination, it would be an issue of assessing the effects on cost and time , should any of the approaches be used. If resource smoothing is adopted, then it would mean that maybe getting a new contractor. The deadlines maybe slightly affected, but cost maybe affected considerably.

If resource leveling is to be applied, it would be an issue of reallocating tasks among the engineer or reworking on some processes . This may as well affect deadlines and possibly time trying to evaluate possible strategies to mitigate risk at hand. Either way, the effect must be evaluated to find out what is more suitable given the circumstances.

  55. Looking at the figure provided, resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.
However the challenge of MTD with the Glasgow event concerning the water quality and a contaminated source had a deadline to be met.
So, applying a resource levelling approach would mean that, MTD would either delay the activities of Glasgow event in order to make use of its available resources by rescheduling its resources or start the activities on time but would extend its duration over more days.
Whichever of this decisions is made, it will impact on the project deadline and costs. This implies that the scope of the project itself should be reviewed.
Therefore, it would be better if MTD apply resource smoothing approach by substituting current resources with a new one. This way, project deadline is met, quality issues is resolved but cost is affected which will be analysed in the earned value.

  56. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadlines.

Resources are the key physical tools needed to execute projects. it could be materials or human. these are often planned alongside other elements during project planning. However, there are tendencies that in the course of project execution the PM may fall short of these resources. At this point, the available resources can either be levelled or smoothed to meet up with the project objectives. These are not without implications, though.

While resource levelling majorly impacts the project timeline and cost, resource smoothing may affect the project cost only while the timeline remains undisrupted.

  57. From the MTD videos seen, the Glasgow event seems to have a fixed deadline, and in this case, resource leveling doesn’t look feasible because it has to do with rescheduling. Except the stakeholders involved, from both ends (MTD and Glasgow stakeholders), come to a compromise, which may also place resource smoothing as an option.

  58. Project Resource Management:

Resources are the key physical tools needed to execute projects. it could be materials or human. these are often planned alongside other elements during project planning. However, there are tendencies that in the course of project execution the PM may fall short of these resources. At this point, the available resources can either be levelled or smoothed to meet up with the project objectives. These are not without implications, though.

While resource levelling majorly impacts the project timeline and cost, resource smoothing may affect the project cost only while the timeline remains undisrupted.

With respect to the MTD water project, it must be noted that the project has a definite deadline for which it must be completed so that the event can commence (simultaneous task you may want to call it). To this end, it will be difficult for the PM to apply the resource levelling technique. using this approach will affect the project timeline which will invariable affect the event’s schedule also. The most viable option available to the PM is the resource smoothing technique by hiring additional resources. This must first be discussed with the project sponsors. For as much as the sponsors approved the proposal, and willing to bear the added cost, the PM is good to go.

    Regards.

  59. I think it would not be feasible to implement a resource-leveling approach in this scenario. This is because the project was executed under a deadline and every activity was as important as the others, if they implemented resource leveling, the project would have finished overtime which would have affected the event to happen on time and created customer dissatisfaction however I think they would have implemented resource smoothing where they look for an additional resource that will help them to finish the task within scheduled time though it implies cost increase it protect and preserve the reputation and name of the company for future projects

  60. With the Glasgow MTD project, hardly will the delivery date be feasible, because of the gravity of the unforeseen situation that came up. in my opinion, it will not be advisable to implement the levelling approach due to deadline issues, and the ricocheting effects on all layers and actors involved in the project. i will most probably go for the resource smoothing approach, even though costing more, a failure cost was already built into the original budget, this is the advantage of building that cost into the budget. but it will get the job done and on schedule, thereby maintaining integrity and professionalism.

    Day 16
Resource leveling in MTD water project. Resource Smoothing for me would have been the best since it focuses on preserving planned deadlines even though it increases the project cost when new resource is added to the team without affecting the dealine of the project. E.g when a caterer is given a project to cook for 30 people for an occasion, she will bill you based on the 30 people but maybe along the process you added extra 10 people and you still want her to meet up that day, it will cost you more because the resources available might not reach the 40 people and she will still deliver that day instead of rescheduling the event due to lack of resources which will bring delay nd more cost too.

Noted that if resource levelling is applied, the team will experience huge setbacks and even the clients will be affected by you not meeting up with the deadline and rescheduling of projects due to delays.

  62. Resource smoothing is best for MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event so as to preserve project deadline, though it would invariably increase project cost. But you cannot afford for deadline to be affected as it is for an event.

Resource levelling would impact the deadline of the project which would impact the company’s future rating due to inability to meet a project deadline for an event.

  63. Resource leveling in the MTD Water Project

Resource leveling will have a time impact on the MTD project as it needs some processes to be done at a certain time and in sequence before others.
MTD will deliver the project but if they try to do it with only the resources available per time they will deliver the project late, this is where the vote to apply resource smoothing comes in.

  64. Implementing a resource levelling approach for MTD’s water installation project would have been the option but because in this project some phases are considered before another, it’s a project that one job must be completed before another one comes in. With the knowledge of resource levelling, they do not change the current capacity. It’s more of rescheduling which obviously can’t work in MTD but when resource smoothing comes in there will be an increase in project cost but the deadline will be fixed and preserved.

  65. Applying resources leveling in MTD project could cause a great set back and make the project slown, thereby not been deliver at expected time

  66. Using the MTD Water project as an example;

Resource Smoothing is the best based on the fact that it tends to focus on preserving planned deadlines though it increases project cost when a new resource is added to the team without affecting the deadline of the project.

On the other hand, If resource levelling is applied, the team will experience huge setbacks and even the clients such as not meeting up with the deadline and rescheduling of projects due to delays.

  67. Implementing a resource leveling approach for MTD’s water installation events in Glasgow could help optimize resource usage, prevent overallocation, and ensure a smoother execution. Factors such as event complexity, timeline, and resource availability would need to be considered for a comprehensive feasibility assessment.

  68. I will not agree to resource leveling having great impact on MTD water project because in this project some phases are considered before another, its like saying a job must be completed before another one comes in. With the knowledge of resource levelling that they do not change the current capacity. It’s more of rescheduling which obviously can’t work in MTD but when resource smoothing comes in tho there will be increase in project cost but the deadline will be fixed and preserved.
The additional cost will be invested which will yield good outcomes as the deadline for the project phases remain intact.
For Glasglow I believe with all these videos about the firm resource leveling will be good for them.

  69. Resources leveling implementation will be a suitable approach for MTD water project and the Glasgow project, resource optimisation can be applied over time by striking a balance between the available resources and the demand by the project managers.

  70. The best approach for MTD water project and Glasgow project will certainly be Resources leveling implementation, project managers can rely on resource optimisation over time by striking a balance between the resources available and the demand.

  71. Resources leveling implementation is the most suitable approach for MTD water project and the Glasgow project, project managers can leverage on resource optimisation over time by striking a balance between the available resources and the demand. The following most be taken into consideration, the periodic event in the case of MTD limited timing various steps must be taken to meet up. Resources availability and task preorietization

  72. Implementation of resource levelling might just be the best option for the MTD water installation project and the Glasgow project as resources might be far reaching and limited and if a resource smoothing approach is employed, it means having extra overhead expenses that weren’t budgeted for in the scheme of things when the project costs were being outlined. So it will be in the best interest of the MTD water installation Project and Glasgow to not change the existing or current capacity but focus on rescheduling which will definitely impact on intended project deadlines by having to extend the given period of time but on the long run save costs

  73. Though difficult, it might still be possible with good organisation and coordination to implement a resource levelling strategy MTD water installation firm that works within set durations established by athletic events. Through the use of resource levelling, project managers can optimise resource utilisation over time by striking a balance between resource availability and demand.

To apply resource levelling in this case, take into account the following:

Periodic Events: Given that MTD is limited by the periodic schedules of athletic events, the project’s critical path is probably well-defined. In order for the planned events to happen on time, various tasks need to be finished by a given date.

Material Availability: Determine which essential materials are needed for water installations and make sure they are accessible when needed.

Sorting jobs according to priority and effect on the project timeline should be done in a clear and concise manner. By doing this, resources can be better directed towards important tasks that need to be finished on schedule.

While raising the project cost, resource smoothing focuses on maintaining the scheduled deadline. While resource levelling focuses on scheduling changes that may affect the project deadline, it does not alter the current capacity.

  74. Implementing a resource leveling approach MTD water installation company that operates within fixed timeframes determined by sporting events can be challenging but may still be feasible with careful planning and coordination. Resource leveling is a project management technique used to balance resource demand with resource availability, optimizing the use of resources over time.

Here are considerations for implementing resource leveling in this scenario:

Fixed Timeframes: Since MTD is constrained by the fixed timeframes of sporting events, the critical path of the project is likely well-defined. This means that certain activities must be completed within specific deadlines to align with the scheduled events.

Resource Availability: Identify the critical resources required for water installations and ensure that they are available when needed. This may involve coordinating with suppliers, contractors, and other stakeholders to secure necessary resources within the fixed timeframe.

Prioritization of Tasks: Clearly prioritize tasks based on their importance and impact on the overall project schedule. This helps in focusing resources on critical activities that must be completed on time.

  75. I do not agree that resource levelling would be a good approach considering the fact that the project stages by MDT are overlapping. A phase is expected to be completed before another.
Levelling might alter the process of the project.
What can be done is to add more resources or replace resources in other to attain efficiency quality requirements.

  76. Resource leveling would not be appropriate for MTD project because extending the project date holds no benefit to MTD or its client. This is based largely on the fact that MTD projects have a very fixed timeframe which is determined by the dates that the sporting events take place which have been planned sometimes years in advance.

The only plausible approach is resource smoothing, allocating more resources to project to ensure that the end date is kept.

  77. Resource leveling involves adjusting the project schedule to balance the demand for resources, ensuring a smoother and more consistent utilization of resources over time which can work well with the MDT project

  78. Resource leveling is best suited for a long-term term project for the rescheduling of timeline would not after the project deliverable.

  79. As an upcoming project manager, constant communication with the stakeholders is what I held on to. Meeting the stakeholders individually to show them the evidence of what is on ground and juxtapose if it’s complementing and in line with their needs. Not being scared of bringing ideas to the discussion table is a great one because project manager are ought to endowed with problem solving skills.

  80. Resource smoothing focus on preserving the planned deadline although increasing its project cost. resource levelling on the other hand does not change the current capacity though focuses on rescheduling which have a possible impact on the project deadline.

  81. Every Jobs requires the communication skills, because the way you communicate will determine what the output of your Job will be like. Bad communication ruins Work.
Also continual professional development also matters because the world is advancing and we can’t just stay in a place. We need to advance with it so as to stay relevant

  82. That’s correct! Resource smoothing and resource leveling are two techniques used in project management to manage resources effectively. Resource smoothing focuses on keeping the original project deadlines intact by adjusting the allocation of resources, even if it means increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling aims to maintain the existing resource capacity by rescheduling tasks, which may impact project deadlines. Both techniques have their advantages and can be used depending on the specific needs and constraints of a project.

  83. Making use of resource leveling for an event that is in two days is very risky because it might go over the event day and that will be a failed project and also the client will not be happy. It will be better to make use of resource smoothing instead, though it will add more cost but it will be most beneficial in this scenario.

  84. There are 2 ways to look at this case.
    1. Time for event start up is sacrosanct and the so there is no was resources levelling would work without meeting a key deliverable which is the start of the event. This would cause great dissatisfaction to the client.
    2. As per the Glasgow event, if the client had put forth the right information about the condition of the water, then the project team would have also built that into their project plant form the onset. With proper information, either resource smoothing or leveling could work as long costs and timelines are aligned with the client from the project onset.

  85. Resource smoothing is preserving planned deadlines while increasing project costs. However, resource levelling does not change current capacity extend and impacts the project deadline, without affecting the overall project timeline.

  86. I don’t believe that resource leveling would be appropriate for MTD project because extending the project date holds no benefit to MTD or its client. This is based largely on the fact that MTD projects have a very fixed timeframe which is determined by the dates that the sporting events take place which have been planned sometimes years in advance.

The only plausible approach is resource smoothing, allocating more resources to project to ensure that the end date is kept.

  87. Time constrained scheduling also know as resource smoothing, is a technique used to make the best or most effective resources to deliver a project without changing the delivery date. This technique might involve the expertise of more hands in other words hiring new people to speed things up, or changing the scope of the project which definitely increases or add to the project cost. While Resource constrained scheduling also known as resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but rather duels on rescheduling, which may delay the project delivery deadlines.

  88. Resource levelling involves splitting or extending a section(s) of the project, without affecting the overall project timeline and may or may not increase project cost. However, resource smoothing will most likely increase project cost and extend the expected project deadline.

  89. resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines while increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change current capacity but focuses on rescheduling but impacts the project deadline

  90. Resource leveling may not be feasible in this scenario since the events cannot be easily rescheduled, and any attempts to do so would incur significant costs. This is primarily because invitations, tickets, and event advertisements have already been created and distributed. Consequently, resource smoothing emerges as a more viable option as it allows for the completion of the task by the anticipated deadline or possibly even earlier.

  91. As the MTD project manager mentioned, it would be better to apply the resource levelling to allocate resources according to their availability and after gathering quality information that would help the production of quality product. Though the resource levelling impacts on the deadlines but all the stakeholders are informed as long as the cost remain unchanged in order to finally provide the quality water distribution system.

  92. Resource leveling will not suit MTD’s project case scenario. There’s a fixed date for the event and resource leveling can extend deadlines, this would be catastrophic for the whole event.

  93. I would consider resource leveling for the MDT water cooperation because levelling balances workload and still impacts on project deadlines.

  94. Whatever the nature of a project, both the human, physical, and time continuum impact the planning and decision-making. For example, when a project is of a hybrid nature, like MTD, resource scarcity is unavoidable.
However, a project manager has to reconsider the project scope by either rescheduling the deadline or maintaining the deadline and playing around with the rest of the resources available.

All in all, every project has conditions to fulfill and has constraints related to resources. The solution depends on how a project manager reacts to every situation in the project life cycle.

  95. For MTD resource smoothing is the best option for the company as the project has been planned and has an end date.

  96. Resources leveling suits MTD’s projects in my opinion because resource leveling balances workload and still impacts on project deadlines

  97. I will consider resource levelling as the best option for MTD , as it involve balancing workload on resources although it might be cost but it could be reduced through better scheduling. it will also help reduce the risk of stress.

  98. In my own opinion , For MTD that operates on deadlines, resource smoothing is the way to go. Project price will be impacted but we must note that delivery is a major factor.

  99. In analyzing MTD’s projects, specifically the water installation events in Glasgow, a critical examination is needed to determine if these initiatives face rapid changes, uncertainties, or resource fluctuations that could justify adopting a resource leveling approach. This evaluation involves aligning the principles of resource leveling with MTD’s operational dynamics, assessing resource constraints or uneven workloads that could benefit from a more balanced allocation. Furthermore, a reflection on project scope revisions, consideration of the core elements of time, cost, and quality, exploration of potential risks and benefits, and comparisons with large infrastructure projects offer insights into whether a resource leveling approach is feasible and practical for MTD’s unique context.

  100. Resource levelling is best for MTD since resource levelling is a resource management technique that can help teams better accommodate resource constraints and predict project timelines. It would also help them avoid poor project planning.

  101. I would consider resource levelling for the MDT water cooperation because it will help to balance the workload and possibly for Glasgow project, but it entails a lot of complexities and the environment is also volatile.

  102. In the Case of MTD a water company who have a lot Clientele relying on them may have to go with idea of Resource Levelling due to the kind of service they provide; it might incur cost. but due to certain factors , the best chance is to stick with resource Levelling.

  103. Resourcce leveling suits MTD’s projects in my opinion becase resource leveling balances workload and still impacts on project deadlines,

  104. Resource leveling aims to address resource constraints without altering the project’s overall duration. This is achieved by adjusting the schedule of activities, often resulting in a smoother resource utilization curve. However, it’s important to consider various factors in the context of MTD’s water installation events:

-Large-scale events, such as those managed by MTD, may involve complex logistics and dependencies. Resource leveling could be challenging if certain tasks are time-sensitive or if there are fixed deadlines for specific aspects of the event.

-Resource leveling may impact these deadlines and could affect client satisfaction. It’s crucial to balance resource constraints with the need to meet client expectations.

-If the project has a degree of flexibility in terms of start and end dates, resource leveling may be more feasible without compromising critical milestones.

-If MTD has successfully implemented similar strategies in the past, it may be an indicator of feasibility.

Overall. we have to look at MTD’s water installations, the constraints that may occur, and the project objective. Resource levelling might be feasible, but we have to look at the unique characteristics of each project, the environmental factor, the industry trend and the clients expectation to be able to utilize resource levelling.

    1. I agree with sunmisola point for MTD waters, resource leveling seem to be the best to be considered with the dynamics of MTD project, environment and stakeholders interest

  105. Resource smoothing suits this project although the project manager should be able to do what works best in meeting up with the deadline and giving his client a satisfactory job.

    1. For me, in the case of MTD, Resource Smoothing is the better option. Especially since they work most of the time with Events which date has already been fixed.
They cannot let the end date slip. They can increase the scheduled resources and let the end date stay.
Reschedule or increase resources, Hold end date.
The end date must stay, so that they don’t disappoint their clients who has a date fixed for their event.

  106. Major difference between resource smoothing and resource leveling are cost and time respectfully. Resource smoothing might cost more by increasing resources but delivers the project on or before deadline. While Resource leveling approach manages the available resource but may not meet up with the deadline.
Both resource smoothing and resource leveling are unpleasant scenario to the project sponsors because they might reevaluate the project scope. This is why is very important to always carry the sponsors along from inception, so they can support when uncertain challenge arise.
It is feasible to implement resource leveling approach on MTD water installation Glasgow event if the clients are willing to adjust project deadline rather than extra cost.

  107. In the context of MTD’s water installation events company and the Glasgow event, I think applying a resource leveling approach is certainly a viable consideration. Resource leveling involves adjusting the project schedule to balance the demand for resources, ensuring a smoother and more consistent utilization of resources over time.
For MTD, which may have varying resource requirements during different phases of event planning and execution, resource leveling could help optimize resource usage and prevent periods of resource overloading or underutilization. This is particularly relevant in the dynamic and often unpredictable environment of event management. The feasibility of applying resource leveling depends on several factors such as the flexibility of task dependencies, the availability of alternative resources, and the overall project constraints.
Task Dependencies- If the tasks in the project have flexible dependencies and can be adjusted without affecting critical paths, resource leveling may be more feasible,
Resource Availability- The availability of alternative resources or the ability to shift resources between tasks can impact the feasibility of resource leveling. Project Constraints- Critical tasks with fixed deadlines or external dependencies may limit the extent to which resource leveling can be applied without affecting overall project timelines.
Flexibility in Scheduling-The nature of event management projects may require a degree of flexibility in scheduling, and resource leveling should be implemented without compromising the timely completion of critical tasks.
Hybrid Approach- A hybrid approach that combines elements of resource smoothing and leveling might be more practical. This allows for optimized resource utilization while maintaining flexibility in meeting project milestones. In some cases, critical tasks with fixed deadlines or dependencies may limit the extent to which resource leveling can be implemented without affecting project timelines.
Considering the complex nature of event management, where certain tasks may be time-sensitive or dependent on external factors, a hybrid approach that combines elements of both resource smoothing and leveling might be most practical. This would allow MTD to balance resource demands while maintaining the necessary flexibility to meet project milestones and deadlines.
I also think that resource levelling application to MTD’s projects should also be assessed based on the specific characteristics and constraints of the events before applying it.

  108. in my opinion i think the resource leveling approach will work efficiently with the MTD water system because the project is not completely a complex one.

  109. I think resource leveling approach will work better with MTD water system because the project is not complex and volatile. But for Gaslow project entails a lot of complexities and the environment is also volatile.

  110. Considering the situation with MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, it might be possible to apply a resource leveling approach. Resource leveling is a technique used in project management to address resource shortfalls or excesses by adjusting the project schedule. Given the context of the company and the event, here are some considerations:

    1. Resource Smoothing or Time-Limited Scheduling:
    – This approach involves adjusting the project schedule to smooth out resource requirements. It could be useful for MTD if they have fluctuations in resource demand during the Glasgow event preparation. By redistributing the workload more evenly over the project duration, MTD could potentially manage resources more effectively.

    2. Reschedule or Increase Resources:
    – MTD could consider rescheduling tasks or increasing resources if certain activities are experiencing resource shortfalls. This might involve adjusting the timeline of specific tasks or bringing in additional resources to meet demand.

    3. Hold End Date:
    – If MTD is facing resource constraints, they might need to consider extending the project timeline to accommodate the limitations. This approach could allow them to complete the work without overloading their resources.

    4. Do the Best with What You Have:
    – In some cases, MTD might need to make the best of the resources available to them and adjust their plans accordingly. This approach involves optimizing resource usage and finding alternative solutions to work within the given constraints.

    5. End Date Slips:
    – If resource shortages persist and cannot be easily resolved, MTD may need to consider allowing the project end date to be delayed. This would give them more time to manage resource constraints and complete the project effectively.

    6. Resource Leveling or Resource-Limited Scheduling:
    – This approach involves examining resource availability and adjusting the project schedule to smooth out resource demand. MTD could use this method to ensure that resources are allocated in a balanced manner throughout the project, helping to manage any shortages or excesses.

Finally, applying a resource leveling approach could potentially help MTD manage resource constraints and ensure efficient utilization of resources during the Glasgow event preparation. However, the specific approach to be used would depend on the nature of the resource constraints and the unique circumstances of the project.

  111. Resource smoothing is the best choice as both ways will still attract additional cost at the end of the day

  112. In MTD ,it wouldn’t be a good idea to use resource levelling , other than that , it can’t work , cause in MTD , THE CRITICAL AND NON CRITICAL EVENTS can’t be delayed or extended cause they required following steps to achieve good distribution of the water and making sure to follow the normal guidelines so as to not have issues with the local authorities and to deliver with the best quality making sure the health of the people who consumes the water is considered . In MTD , i think it would be great to use RESOURCE SMOOTHING to fix the issue of resource overloading

  113. Prominent event firms such as MTD and Glasgow Events prioritize the timely completion of projects. When faced with a choice between meeting project deadlines at a higher expense or entirely rescheduling delivery, management might prefer the former. This is because, despite a slight increase in costs, adhering to project timelines in the events industry has a positive influence on the reputation of events management. Consequently, in this scenario, opting for resource smoothing is potentially a more favorable approach than resource-leveling.

  114. Though both resource leveling and resource smoothing are good, as they create impact on projects cost in their different ways, considering this circumstance, resource smoothing is ideal, reason being that, even while coat increases, there is the assurance of meeting deadlines, with quality projects as a priority.

  115. Resource Smoothing is better of, there’s increase in cost , and workload in other to achieve quality results within the specified time.

  116. MTD and the Glasgow events are high profile events firms that would prefer certain deadlines on projects being met. If the management is faced between delivering projects according to initial deadlines at increased cost and complet reschedule of delivery time, may prefer the former. This may be due to the fact that timely delivery of projects in the events sector has a corresponding positive influence on events management profile irrespective of slight increase in cost. Hence, resource levelling may not be a feasible concept here, rather, resource smoothing may be preferred.

  117. Both Resource smoothing and resource leveling affects project cost in their own ways . So for this case . Resource smoothing is better because it ensures project deadline is met while cost increases . Unless stakeholder of a particular thinks project deadline can be extended without minding, then resource leveling can come into play

  118. I don’t think it is feasible to implement resource leveling in this case as it would not just attract rescheduled deadline but also increased cost as a result on an extended project timeline.

For me as the project manager, it would be best to activate Resource smoothing which would not only preserve the project goal but maintain Company ethics but an increased cost with the benefit of meeting assigned deadline from the initiation phase.

It is important for MTD to increase cost rather than joepardize future opportunities by extending deadline.

  119. In this scenario
For MTD’s water project deadline, resource smoothing is ideal despite potential cost increases and timely delivery of a high-quality project is the top priority, ensuring sponsor satisfaction.

  120. IN THIS SCENARIO THAT WAS JUST REVIEWED.

Resource levelling has more advantages because it involves smoothing out the allocation of resources to prevent peaks and troughs, ensuring a more consistent workflow.

Factors such as the project timeline, available resources, and potential challenges in resource allocation would need to be considered to determine the feasibility of implementing a resource-leveling approach in this particular scenario.
The MTD water project is tasked with delivering onsite water facilities by a set event date, making resource smoothing the key solution for timely delivery
    OR
If we are thinking about the MTD, Water Installation Company and Glasgow event Company, It would be not just be possible but also ideal going for smoothing strategy in as much as there will be an increase in costs, they will be able to achieve their primary goal which is completing/ delivering a quality project within the stipulated time frame and by so doing, maintain their sponsors’ satisfaction.

  121. Resource smoothing focus on preserving planned deadline though increasing project cost, while resource levelling does not change the current capacity though focuses on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadline.

  122. Resource smoothing will be a better option in this scenario. If MTD applies resources leveling, they may be able to maintain cost, but will however, increase their time, which will inevitably affect their cost still. However, if resource smoothing is applied, prices may be hiked up a bit, but their schedule will be maintained.

  123. Resource smoothing suits this project although the project manager should be able to do what works best in meeting up with the deadline and giving his client a satisfactory job.
    Thanks.

  124. Resource smoothing is the best option for MTD to meet up with the deadline even though it will cost them more to implement the project but the client will be satisfied with the project delivery.

  125. Since MTD has a deadline to meet, I don’t think it would be possible to apply a resource leveling approach.

  126. Resource leveling seek to balance workload on resources thereby making it feasible to implement in this instance, this help to equate resource usage with available capacity
It will stabilize the workload and reduce stress risks.

  127. Resource levelling will not work in this case because the events cannot be shifted or if done will cost a lot to do due to the fact that invitations, tickets and advertisements about the event would have already been done and sent out. Therefore, resource smoothing will be a better choice because it would help get the job done at the expected date or even earlier.

  128. Resource smoothing maintains maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. While the resource leveling maintain the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines

MTD project, adopting resources leveling, will increase time, which will affect the cost even while trying to maintain their cost. However, if they apply resource smoothing, it might take the prices up a bit, but their schedule will be maintained, especially since the date for the event has already been fixed.

  129. It would be feasible to implement resource levelling as it focuses on balancing the workload on resources so as to equate resource usage with available capacity
It will stabilize the workload and reduce stress risks.

  130. Resource leveling poses significant challenges for MTD due to their stringent timelines, primarily in event setup with fixed commencement dates affecting multiple stakeholders. The nature of their work necessitates allowances for redundancies, ensuring operational continuity and deadline adherence. To mitigate disruptions, MTD strategically incorporates buffers and contingency plans, aligning resources with the dynamic demands of their projects. This approach enables them to navigate unforeseen circumstances and maintain a robust operational structure, vital for meeting time-sensitive project goals amidst the complexities of event management.

  131. Looking ant the magnitude of that project mtd is handling, resource leveling is not possible because they are working on a tight deadline .the best option to adopt . Though it may cost more ,but the goal will be achieved . Therefore , resource smoothing will be the best for them to utilize

  132. Resource levelling is almost impossible for MTD because they work with tight deadlines. They’re setting up for events that have a fixed take off date that impact several other stakeholders. This is why they make room for redundancies and have provision to ensure work is not disrupted and they can meet deadlines given.

  133. For me the MTD water installation, it will be good if they use resource leveling not minding that it will make the project not to be delivered at the appointed time but it will bring in much more good in terms of rescheduling for proper handling of the project…

It’s very important for the water installation company to stick to deadlines

  134. Cohort 12- Team 2

Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines

For the of MTD, applying resources leveling, will definitely increase their time, which will invariable affect the cost even while trying to aintain their cost. However, if they apply resource smoothing, it might take the prices up a bit, but their schedule will be maintained, especially since the date for the event has already been fixed.

  135. I think that resources smoothing will be the best option for the MTD company. This will slightly affect and raise the cost but the project deadline will be maintained.

  136. If MTD applies resources leveling, they will relatively maintain their cost, but will increase their time, which will invariable affect the cost still. However, if they apply resource smoothing, it might take the prices up a bit, but their schedule will be maintained, especially since the date for the event has already been fixed. Resources smoothing will be more ideal in this case.

  137. For me the MTD water installation, I think it will be good if they use resource leveling not minding that it will make the project not to be delivered at the appointed time but it will bring in much more good in terms of rescheduling for proper handling of the project…

  138. MTD water installation event company and Glasgow event , the key words needed to react to this scenario are deadline, cost, quality, resources and customer’s satisfaction.
In my own opinion, resources smoothing will be preferable. Deadline as set before is achievable only at an additional cost within promised quality and the overall customer satisfaction is achievable. Date of event cannot be shifted here, and therefore I opine that nothing is too much to sacrifice by the MTD company to deliver their promises , meeting deadline even at an extra cost.

  139. Resource leveling is a resource management technique that can help MTD better accommodate resource constraints and predict project timelines. It helps avoid poor project planning that often leads to last-minute delays, overworked team members, and cost overruns.

Resource leveling should be a part of every project manager’s toolkit. By optimizing and balancing resources across time, you can avoid unrealistic expectations and determine the earliest possible date to complete your project.

  140. Yes, employing a resource leveling approach is advisable for MTD in this dynamic scenario. With an increase in event attendees, resource demands may fluctuate, impacting water supply requirements. Resource leveling enables MTD to optimize resources, ensuring a balanced and efficient response to changing demands without exceeding the budget. This adaptive approach helps manage unforeseen challenges, aligning resource allocation with the evolving needs of the expanded event, ensuring water supply remains adequate and cost-effective.

  141. Resource Levelling approach is not a feasible route for this project because it emphasizes on rescheduling with possible impact of altering the project deadlines. As regards to the MTD, the water installation event company and the Glasgow event. I will suggest the resource smoothing because resource smoothing tends to maintain the original deadline but at a higher cost in bringing in experts. The event date has been fixed, sporting game and other live events cannot be moved, altering the time delivery will result to customers dissatisfaction. In order to maintain sponsors satisfaction, MTD’s priority is quality and timely delivery for customers.

  142. MTD can apply a resource-leveling approach to the Glasgow event because resource-leveling is a resource management technique that can help teams better accommodate resource constraints and predict project timelines. It helps avoid poor project planning that can often lead to last-minute delays, overworked team members, and cost overruns.

According to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide, resource leveling is a technique to help you better accommodate resource constraints by adjusting the start and finish dates of the project. In doing so, you can make a realistic project deadline without overworking your team and increasing the total cost of the project.

Resource leveling gives everyone a realistic bird’s eye view of the project and can help teams establish feasible deadlines and assign tasks reasonably.

  143. MTD’s projects like most projects are time specific and bound. Resource leveling requires rescheduling of tasks and activities that may ultimately extend project deadlines. MTD having inadequate resource to meet up project deadliness would not be accepted by the Sporting Event Client to extend the activity plan which is a complex activity. Hence project deadlines would be affected, for MTD resource leveling may not be practical and feasible. For me, I would not recommend resource leveling for MTD’s water supply projects to events.

    1. MTD project is time bound. Resource leveling requires rescheduling of tasks and activities, that will affect MTD Project, it will greatly affect the cost of the project and time.

  144. In the case of the MTD, I strongly believe that resource smoothing should be considered but the sponsor as well as other stakeholders should be communicated appropriately.
I suggest resource smoothing because it doesn’t alter the deadline unlike resource leveling that emphasizes project rescheduling.

    For Glasgow event:
Communicating the sponsor at every stage is important. Let them be aware of the situation so it can be resolved. My job here however as a PM is to analyse the situation to them and present the two options of resource smoothing and resource leveling to them. I’ll go with the sponsors resolve.

  145. The MTD Water Project is time-sensitive, imaging the team coming to install the water after the sporting event has started, the purpose of the project would have been defeated, MTD’s priority is quality and timely delivery for customers’ satisfaction. For the Glasgow event, I recommend resource smoothing.

  146. Resource leveling on the MTD project could be appropriate because there was need for maintaining the time frame and enhance collaboration.
Resource leveling could avert over spending or overallocation of resources .

  147. The Resources Levelling strategy is not a feasible route for the MTD for a singular obvious reason which is the event for which they cater which is mostly live.
While resource leveling might peel off their costs it will shift and affect the project timeline. The timeline using MTD and their services as a reference is very strict as a sporting game and other live events cannot be moved due to some shortfalls such as water availability
The strength of this resource management strategy lies in identifying critical and non-critical project activities, and shifting, spreading, or splitting non-critical activities however the subject of drinkable water at sporting events demands a more linear response with the iterative response coming in wherever seems to be a challenge so the management of MTD will have to go the Resource smoothing route though it will affect the project original cost but ensure timely delivery.

  148. Team 3
A comprehensive view on resource overload ( PM Course discussion)

Considering the MTD scenario, it would have still be possible and better to apply Resource Leveling because of the following considerations:
    1. Advantage: Leveling aims to minimize resource overallocation and ensures a more even distribution of workload throughout the project duration. It prioritizes resource availability and adherence to the project schedule.
    2. Schedule Stability: Leveling focuses on maintaining the project schedule and eliminating resource conflicts by adjusting task dependencies and extending project timelines if necessary.
    3. Resource Utilization: Leveling helps in optimizing resource utilization by preventing overloading, ensuring resources are not strained or stretched beyond their capacity.
    4. Enhanced Collaboration: By preventing resource conflicts, leveling promotes smoother collaboration among team members, allowing them to work on their tasks without unnecessary delays.

  149. Considering the critical nature of the Glasgow event and the fact that is time bound, I will recommend resource smoothing for MTD Water Project. MTD’s priority is quality and timely delivery for customers’ satisfaction. For the Glasgow event, cost was not the major thing that was considered but quality and delivery time which was why the went extra mile to create an alternative means to meet the immediate water requirements and ensure clean, uncontaminated water for the event. The project team had to bring in water tankers and buffer bags. This definitely help them to meet deadline but increase cost which mostly are covered by event organizers and sponsors.

  150. Pedro Akhimien, Cohort 12, Team 9

For me, I feel it will be okay to apply the resource leveling approach to the MTD and Glasgow project.
This resource management strategy concentrates on re-scheduling while not altering the resource capacity. This usually does not affect the costs but may affect project timelines/deadlines.
The strength of this resource management strategy lies in identifying critical and non-critical project activities, and shifting, spreading, or splitting non-critical activities along the project lifecycle but within their float.

  151. “‘Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines”.
As regards MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event. I will suggest the resource smoothing as the solution. This is due to the fact that resource smoothing tends to maintain the original deadline for the project but at a higher cost. The event date has been fixed and altering the date will not make sense. Hence the need to add extra “experts” to meet the deadline.
The advantages of resource smoothing include.
    -It prevents missed deadlines
    -It maximizes resource utilization
    -It reduces stress and burnout

  152. Referencing the MTD, Water Installation Company, and Glasgow Event Company. Yes, it is feasible to implement a resource-leveling approach in such a scenario. The resource leveling won’t alter the existing resource capacity but instead underlines rescheduling, which may only affect project deadlines.

And it helps MTD peel off resource scarcity/excess, and maintain budgeted costs to deliver a quality project.

  153. For the MTD water installation, I think it will be good if they use resource leveling not minding that it will make the project not to be delivered at the appointed time but it will bring in much more good in terms of rescheduling for proper handling of the project…

  154. Micah Chijioke Madu
    Project Management
    Cohort 12
    Team 6

I think it to be quite feasible to apply the resource levelling approach to the MTD/Glasgow project.
This resource management strategy concentrates on rescheduling while not altering resource capacity. This usually does not affect cost, but may affect project deadlines.
The strength of this resource management strategy lies in identifying critical and none critical project activities, and shifting, spreading or splitting none critical activities along the project lifecycle but within their float.
This can easily be applied to a project scope like that of the water installation events company MTD, and the Glasgow event. This will aid MTD mitigate resource scarcity/overload, maintain budgeted cost, deliver expected quality, and achieve project deadline.

  155. According to the MTD it would be necessary for them to go for resources smoothing so as to bring in more hands to meet the deadline of project rather than going for resources leveling which will see tje the project noy meeting its deadline.

  156. For MTD in my opinion it will be better to apply resource smoothing, increase project cost , by bring more hands and get the project done by deadline.

  157. Thinking about the MTD, Water Installation Company and Glasgow event Company, It will be not just be possible but also ideal going for smoothing strategy in as much as there will be increase in costs, they will be able to achieve their primary goal which is completing/ delivering a quality project within the stipulated time frame and by so doing, maintain their sponsors’ satisfaction.

  158. Thinking about the MTD, Water Installation Company and Glasgow event Company, It will be not just be possible but also ideal going for smoothing strategy in as much as there will be increase in costs, they will be able to achieve their primary goal which is completing/ delivering a quality project within the stipulated time frame and by so doing, maintainin their sponsors’ satisfaction.

  159. Smoothing resources while keeping the predetermined timeframe intact is, in my judgment, the wisest course of action in this case. Smoothing of resources is recommended in order to meet deadlines.
Although resource leveling does not alter present capacity but instead focuses on rescheduling, which may have an effect on project deadlines, resource smoothing prioritizes maintaining scheduled deadlines at the expense of increased project expenses.

  160. Resource smoothing is best recommended for MTD, so that they and their partners (glasgow) can be on the same ground.

  161. Sunday Nathaniel Ngwamah,
    Cohort 12, Team 10.

Meeting dates have been a major priority of both MTD and Glasgow as events companies. Many times, they have start and end dates scheduled before the projects begin. With this in mind, they encure higher or more costs many times since their targets are timeliness. They do this to mostly avoid disappointment of sponsors.

As the result, resource smoothing is recommended for them which though will lead to more projects cost, will definitely facilitate finishing in time and therefore meeting dateline. This strategy is best for then so long as quality and timeliness is met.

  162. Sunday Nathaniel Ngwamah,
    Cohort 12, Team 10.

As the result, resource smoothing is recommended for them which though will lead to more projects cost, will definitely facilitate finishing in time and therefore meeting dateline. This strategy is best for then so long as quality and timeliness is met.

  163. A resource-smoothing approach is recommended for MTD so that the deadlines can be met. Even though more resources are required, it is better to have the sponsors, that is, Glasgow Events Company, satisfied. Resource-levelling may cause delays which may hamper the timely delivery of outputs.

  164. MTD, the water installation company, and Glasgow Events Company often work on events with set start and end dates. It’s recommended to use a resource-smoothing strategy, even if it might lead to higher costs. The main aim is to ensure the project is finished on time. This is crucial to avoid disappointing event sponsors who have invested significantly in organizing the event within a specific timeframe. The priority is delivering a final product or service that meets the required standards and quality.

  165. In this scenario, Resource levelling has more advantages because it involves smoothing out the allocation of resources to prevent peaks and troughs, ensuring a more consistent workflow.

  166. Given the frequent involvement of MTD, the water installation company, and Glasgow Events Company in events with fixed start and end dates, adopting a resource-smoothing strategy is advisable. Despite potential increased costs, the primary goal is to guarantee the on-time completion of the project. This approach is vital to prevent any dissatisfaction among event sponsors who have made substantial investments in organizing the event within the specified timeframe. The focus should be on delivering a final product or service that aligns with the necessary standards and quality.

  167. In my opinion, the best approach to adopt in this instance is resources smoothing where the agreed timeline is retained. Resource smoothing will be advisable so that deadlines will be met.
Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadlines.

  168. It would be best for the water installation event company should adopt the resources smoothing approach which focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing projects cost without changing the current capacity..

  169. Due to the event date, it is not feasible to implement a resource leveling approach within the given deadline for completion.

  170. Resource smoothing will be considered at this point, in order to meet up with the deadline of the project event organized. MTD water project had already a defined date and risk of losing future projects and customers has to be considered by bringing in other strategies to meet the deadline though it affects the project cost

  171. Advisable in this situation is resource smoothing to ensure meeting deadlines. The project phases and plans would remain largely unchanged, with cost implications being the primary consideration. The MTD water project is tasked with delivering onsite water facilities by a set event date, making resource smoothing the key solution for timely delivery

  172. In this scenario, Resource levelling has more advantages because it involves smoothing out the allocation of resources to prevent peaks and troughs, ensuring a more consistent workflow. Factors such as the project timeline, available resources, and potential challenges in resource allocation would need to be considered to determine the feasibility of implementing a resource-leveling approach in this particular scenario.

  173. In this scenario, resource smoothing will be advisable so that deadlines will be met. The phases and project plans wouldn’t change that much except cost implications. MTD water project has the responsibility to deliver onsite water facilities to meet the need of the users at an already established event date, so the solution that will help with the delivery date would be resource smoothing.

  174. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs,
    While
Resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling
Hence By considering 3 piles of project management (Time, cost, and quality) Resources smoothing will no be much advisable

  175. Project completion on the specified date is usually paramount and a top consideration by a PM.

In practical terms, opting for resource leveling proves advantageous as it ensures resource capacity remains intact. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that this approach may necessitate rescheduling certain phases of the MTD water project, inevitably influencing the overall deadline. The careful consideration of these trade-offs is crucial for achieving a balanced and successful project outcome.

  176. In navigating project management, the distinction between resource smoothing and resource leveling becomes pivotal. While resource smoothing strives to uphold planned deadlines at the expense of increased project costs, resource leveling maintains current capacity but prioritizes rescheduling, potentially impacting project deadlines.

  177. Project completion on the specified date is usually paramount and a top consideration by a PM.
For this reason, the MTD water project should apply Resource Smoothing in order to complete the project within the specified timeframe. This is also to avoid disruption on the start and end dates for the event that is already fixed.
Otherwise, if the event date can be moved, then resource leveling will be used.

  178. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadlines.
Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.
Application of resources leveling is preferable since it won’t alter the existing resources capacity. However, the implication is reschedule some phases of the MTD water project thereby affecting the deadline.

  179. Resource levelling is more about accomplishing a task that can cause an extension on delivery date but resource smoothing means accomplishing a task putting in more than assigned labour and still delivering at the set out time

  180. Taking MTD event at Glasgow, looking at the timelines to the main event which is fixed already the approach of resource leveling will greatly impact the float whereas the resource smoothing will increase the project cost slightly however the timeline would still be achieved and the programme commences as planned without a hitch. This is more critical, because the idea of shift of event would be costlier than the additional funds needed to ensure the smoothing process is done effectively.

  181. In my opinion, resource smoothing is best due to the fact of accommodating increased project costs while maintaining the deadline.Resource levelling does not allow any increase in project costs, no matter the float.

  182. •Implementing resource leveling requires strategies with an early, mid or late delays which will cost the project much and time is money afterall. From the iron triangle, time and cost are greatly affected in this approach.
    • A better approach would be resource smoothing, though it will cost the project a little bit the quality, time and client/stakeholder’s satisfaction would be prioritized.

    1. Choice between resource smoothing and resource levelling depends on project priorities and constraints however, resource smoothing focuses on solving resource conflicts without altering project’s critical path, while resource levelling aims to balance usage evenly over time.

      1. MTD in my opinion it will be better to apply resource smoothing, increase project cost , by bring more hands and get the project done effectively

    2. Resource smoothing is the best since it doesn’t change time for deadline it only increase cost. But resource leveling is also good just that the sponsor may not have much time to wait

  183. For MTD, the water installation events company and the Glasgow event, it would be possible to apply a resource levelling approach if the non-critical activities can be delayed or extended within the available float. If not, it’s best to employ a resource smoothing approach, most like adding new resources to the project.

  184. Isibhakhomen Angel Alimikhena

On the MTD water project resource smoothing will help in resolving resource over-allocations without affecting the project’s completion date
And it deals with adjusting non-critical path tasks within their float.

  185. While resource smoothing would cause an increase in the project budget, resource leveling will only lead to a change in the project deadline. This wouldn’t be as much of a burden to the PM as having to return to the stakeholders to request an addition to the previous budget {which could end up being a constant if the previous budget is all the organization has got or the PM has been given to work with, this would definitely in turn affect the deadline as well).

    1. Emplying resource smoothing will benefit MTD very well, since they deal with hard deadlines. Resource leveling will be beneficial if extending the deadline will not affect the reason for the project as a whole.

  186. In this scenario with MTD, the best approach is resources smoothing in the scene that cost does not really matter but the time delivery in meeting the deadline of the project.

  187. I will recommend that MTD should use resource Smoothing because it aims is to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. Resource smoothing may not have impact on the project deadline.

  188. Since meeting deadlines is crucial partner projects, MTD should go with resource smoothing rather that Levelling. Even though it increases cost but doesn’t affect deadlines.

  189. With an already fixed date for the event, resource levelling will not be the best approach because that will mean a new end date for the project and, eventually a new date for the event.

  190. Implementing resource leveling will not be feasible for MTD as it will affect the project deadline which would not be good for the event, so it would be better to go with resource smoothing to meet up with the deadline.

  191. Since resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. MDT would rather embrace resource smoothing which may not have an impact on project deadlines.

  192. MTD cannot afford to delay on their timelines. They will therefore use resource smoothing to ensure their project is timely and also deliver on the quality.

  193. In the context of MTD’s water installation events for the Glasgow event, applying a resource leveling approach might involve redistributing existing resources within the project’s current capacity to ensure a smoother workflow without changing the overall capacity. This could involve adjusting schedules or tasks within the available resource constraints to mitigate any overloading or underutilization of resources.

Resource leveling, in this scenario, could help in optimizing the use of available resources without affecting the overall capacity, potentially helping to balance workloads and avoid bottlenecks in the installation process.

  194. Resource Smoothing is the best option. It is difficult to reschedule events of that nature done by MTD that are time based.

  195. With MTD company resource smoothing will be the best approach because it’s an event water supply company. It is of a fact that events are time bound and as such every event planner must work and deliver between a specified time frame.

  196. As an events based company, MTD needs to prioritise deadlines because it caters to events that are time-based, so the project needs to be done within a fixed schedule.

Resource levelling may not be the right approach as it could end up prolonging the deadlines which will affect the project deliverables.

For MTD, I believe the best course is Resource Smoothing which would ensure that the project stays on course and the water installation is completed before the event, albeit at increased costs which I’m sure the sponsors would prefer rather than failing to deliver the required output.

    1. For the MTD company and Glasgow event , resource smoothing is the way forward as they have a planned time frame to execute the project before them.

  197. Considering that MTD, the water installation company, and Glasgow Events Company frequently deal with events that adhere to fixed timeframes, encompassing both start and end dates, it would be prudent to embrace a resource-smoothing approach. While this may entail higher costs, the paramount objective is to ensure the timely delivery of the project. This approach is crucial in avoiding any disappointment for event sponsors who have invested significantly in organizing the event within the stipulated timeframe. The emphasis should be on delivering a final product or service that meets the requisite standards and quality.

  198. Answer to planning for Quality :

As a project manager focusing on planning for quality, you can take several actions to ensure that the project meets its quality requirements. Here are some suggestions:

    Quality Assurance Actions:
    Define Clear Quality Objectives:

Clearly define quality objectives at the beginning of the project. Make sure these objectives are measurable, realistic, and aligned with the project’s overall goals.
    Establish Quality Standards:

Identify and establish industry or project-specific quality standards. Ensure that all team members are aware of and understand these standards.
    Quality Planning:

Develop a comprehensive quality management plan that outlines how quality will be managed throughout the project lifecycle. This plan should include roles and responsibilities, quality control measures, and processes for continuous improvement.
    Training and Skill Development:

Provide training to team members to enhance their skills and knowledge related to quality management. This can help in preventing common quality issues due to lack of expertise.
    Document Management:

Implement a robust document management system to ensure that all project-related documents, including specifications, requirements, and design documents, are well-documented and easily accessible.
    Continuous Monitoring:

Regularly monitor and assess project processes and outputs to ensure they meet quality standards. Implement a system of continuous monitoring and feedback.
    Quality Control Action:
    Quality Inspections:

Introduce regular inspections and reviews at various stages of the project. This can help identify and address quality issues early in the process, preventing them from escalating.
    Testing Protocols:

Implement a thorough testing protocol that includes unit testing, integration testing, and system testing. Automated testing tools can be employed to ensure comprehensive coverage.
    Peer Reviews:

Incorporate peer reviews for critical deliverables. Having fresh eyes on the work can often reveal issues that may have been overlooked.
    Root Cause Analysis:

Establish a process for conducting root cause analysis when defects or issues are identified. This helps in understanding the underlying causes and implementing corrective actions.
    Audit Considerations:
    Adherence to Standards:

Ensure that the project processes and deliverables adhere to established quality standards. The audit should verify compliance with both internal and external standards.
    Documentation Accuracy:

Verify the accuracy and completeness of project documentation. This includes requirements, design documents, test plans, and any other relevant documentation.
    Process Effectiveness:

Evaluate the effectiveness of the quality management processes. Determine if they are being followed correctly and if they contribute to the overall success of the project.
    Corrective Action Implementation:

Assess the implementation of corrective actions resulting from previous quality issues. Verify if the actions taken have been effective in preventing similar issues from recurring.
    Continuous Improvement:

Evaluate the project’s approach to continuous improvement. Ensure that lessons learned from previous projects are being applied and that the team is actively seeking ways to enhance quality throughout the project.
By implementing these quality assurance and control measures and conducting thorough audits, you can increase the likelihood of delivering a high-quality project that meets or exceeds stakeholder expectations.

  199. Projects like MTD that seem linear in nature better fits into the resource smoothing. Resource levelling doesn’t get handy as timek deadlines are imperative for such projects.

  200. Considering we are dwaling with water and its resources and how it directly involves human lives, i would stand against resource levelling even though i am sure it is often been used just to meet its opening day or commissioning or ribbon cutting day.Resource leveling which involves using available resources could lead to half baked project or a critical part of the project undone or overlooked which definitely would have impact on the lives of those using the water.

  201. For MTD that operates on deadlines, resource smoothing is the way to go. Project price will be impacted but delivery is key.

  202. The best approach is the resources smoothing for MTD Water project implementation as it will preserve planned deadline that cannot be altered.

  203. Olaniyi Onabanjo
    Team 8, Cohort 11.

MTD, the water installation events company and the Glasgow event are two reputable companies who will like to focus on preserving planned deadline base on how essential their services are and may not mind the extra cost it may attract. Hence, Resource Smoothing should be their choice.

  204. In this MTD scenario, the resource levelling approach will not be suitable in the sense that it will definitely affect the planning of the scheduled event and when trying to reschedule the project it will affect when the event will hold thereby causing delay. The client will not be happy and satisfied but with the resource smoothing approach which is putting more time (overtime) on the project or adding new resources will definitely make the event hold at the stipulated time but affect cost on the project while at the same time making our client happy and fulfilled.

  205. Given the pre-scheduled event with a fixed deadline, it is clear that the Resource Levelling approach is not suitable for MTD because, the project will not be delivered as agreed and it will bring about disappointet to the client. In this scenario, the most suitable option is Resource Smoothing, albeit with the associated consequence of an incremental increase in project cost. The project will be delivered as planned and event will also hold as proposed

  206. I would not advise using the resource levelling approach as the major issue of the project is a scarcity of resources.

  207. Resource leveling will be a great help when it comes to quality and all technical issue will be handle correctly smoothing might not take project detail into consideration but rather focuses on time.

    1. Resource smoothing appears to be a better option in these cases as the factors (critical and non-critical ) can not be delayed. Time is essential and thus requires allocation of
more resources with the stipulated timelines to be maintained

  208. Resource smoothing will be advisable so that deadlines will be met. The phases and project plans wouldn’t change that much except cost implications. MTD water project has the responsibility to deliver onsite water facilities to meet the need of the users at an already established event date, so the solution that will help with the delivery date would be resource smoothing

  209. For the MTD project, Resource Smoothing is the best approach for the project because of the Time frame to deliver the project.

  210. A Project like MTD requires resource smoothing because it preserves planned deadlines but increases project cost. As long as the deadline is met and the project is delivered, the best approach should be adopted.

  211. Resource smoothing and resource levelling.

About MTD, the water installation events company and the Glasgow event videos so far on this course. Looking at the figure above to apply a resource levelling approach is not a good solution.

The approach that fit is Resource Smoothing because of the event deadline. Resources can be added or using overtime approach will help to meet up with the deadlines

  212. Oladapo Ngozi Elizabeth
    Team 8, Cohort 11
Considering MTD and what is does, RESOURCE SMOOTHING is best to handle the project to meet the deadline.

  213. Cohort11 Team5
Meeting deadlines sometimes can be very tasking and stressful, but timely delivery promotes trust and reliability it also meets needs at the appropriate time. I would rather choose resource smoothing for MTD because smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increases project cost.
Resource leveling can be considered only if all options of resource smoothing fail.

    1. Team 5 Cohort 11

      I agree to this statement

Resource smoothing is advisable for MTD water event company because they have delivery deadlines that cannot be extended. However, peradventure the resource smoothing fails, they can absorb the resource levelling as an alternative.

  214. Based on the series of videos incorporated into the course, I think MTD can apply resource levelling approach if they, at the outset, were able to secure from the clients, reasonable floats that allow shifting the scheduling of project activities within the secured floats. In the event where the planned deadlines must be preserved, resource smoothing will be more appropriate while taking advantage of its incorporated contingency into the planning process that aligns the client toward bearing directly, the associated costs.

    1. Considering the MTD project , resource smoothing will work better because it involves maintaining deadline with increase in cost. If they don’t meet up with the dead line and reschedule, they disappoint and dis organise the events

      1. I feel the best way for MTD to apply in this situation is Resource smoothing since this strategy focuses on preserving planned deadlines although their project costs will increase.

However the sporting event for which their projects is based is a fixed event with date already fixed. Too many people are involved and participating in the event: athletes and their supporting staff, media, spectators, vendors etc, all probably coming to the event from different locations. So in this case using the strategy of resource levelling would not work as this strategy would require changing the project deadlines and rescheduling, and the project owner would not permit this as MTD is just one of the service provider that has been hired to provide a product (water) for their event.

  215. Considering the MTD water project scenario, I will suggest using resource levelling to meet up with the project deadline. This will help to manage their resources and time to complete the project

    1. If we are to consider the MTD water scheme, which demand is high to ensure water float for consumer usage, Resource levelling will create an uncertain impediment in the project plan.

I will suggest Resource smoothing. Why? It is because the project plan deadline can be effective thus enabling the project manager, teams, clients and stakeholders to move forward into other projects. Although, this choice is costly…the cost effect can be managed than having to reschedule an ongoing project which may lead to failure at the end.

  216. Concerning the MTD, I’ll suggest resource smoothly since they want to beat up the delay. Though its going to demands for extra cost but that’s the best way to handle the project so that the manager won’t be put under pressure.

  217. For MTD dates, it’s concerning water distribution for consumers as early as possible. So if no enough floats on the schedule then smoothing will be the best option. But if there are enough floats on the schedule then levelling is best so as to maintain duration amd cost. There for a change in cost does not matter so far deadline is met.

  218. Considering the MTD water project scenario, I will suggest using resource levelling to meet up with the project deadline. This will help to manage their resources and time to complete the project.

  219. According to MTD, they deal with an essential commodity for everyday use which cannot to subjected to rescheduling, resource smoothing will be the best approach for MTD.

    1. Considering the MTD water project, I would advise that the MTD project should consider to follow the Resource Smoothing approach because this will help them to meet up with their planned deadlines.

      1. I think resource smoothing is best for MTD water project though it will increase the cost but it will not tamper with the deadline.

  220. EXPERIENCE OF SCHEDULING RESOURCES ASSIGNMENT:

Meredith and Mantel (2012) identified several problems that can affect scheduling resources in project management. Let’s examine how each of these might relate to the banking sector and how they could impact your projects:

    Thoughtless Optimism:

This problem refers to being overly optimistic about project timelines without considering potential risks or uncertainties. In the banking sector, this could manifest if project planners underestimate the time required for regulatory approvals, software implementations, or other complex tasks.
    Demand Equal to Resource Capacity:

If the demand for resources in a project equals the available capacity, it may lead to resource bottlenecks and delays. In banking, this could occur if there is a high demand for specific expertise or if the team is stretched thin across multiple projects.
    The ‘Student Syndrome’:

This refers to procrastination and delaying tasks until the last possible moment. In banking projects, this might occur if certain tasks, such as compliance reviews or data gathering, are postponed until they become urgent, potentially causing delays.
    Multitasking to Reduce Idle Time:

While multitasking might seem like a way to improve efficiency, it can lead to decreased productivity and quality of work. In banking projects, multitasking might occur if team members are spread thin across various tasks, impacting the overall project timeline.
    Complex Schedules:

Projects with intricate and detailed schedules can be more prone to delays due to the complexity of coordinating various tasks and resources. In banking, this could be relevant in large-scale projects involving system upgrades, mergers, or new product launches.
    Motivation:

Lack of motivation among team members can hinder project progress. In the banking sector, motivation might be affected by factors such as unclear project goals, inadequate recognition, or a lack of alignment between individual and project objectives.
    Game-Playing:

Game-playing refers to individuals manipulating the system to their advantage, which can disrupt the project schedule. In banking, this might manifest as team members prioritizing tasks that benefit them personally rather than the project as a whole.
Most Likely to Affect Banking Projects:

In the banking sector, the problems most likely to affect projects could include “Demand Equal to Resource Capacity” due to the often high demand for specialized skills, and “Complex Schedules” in the case of intricate projects involving regulatory compliance, technology upgrades, or major organizational changes.

“Motivation” could also be a significant factor, especially if team members are not adequately motivated or engaged in the project, leading to potential delays and reduced productivity.

Additionally, “Thoughtless Optimism” could be relevant, especially if there’s a tendency to underestimate the time required for specific banking tasks, such as regulatory approvals or system implementations.

Understanding and mitigating these challenges can contribute to more effective resource scheduling and successful project outcomes in the banking sector.

  221. Resource leveling is typically applicable in situations where resources are overallocated or unevenly distributed throughout a project schedule. It involves adjusting the timing of activities to balance resource demand with resource availability without changing the project scope.

To determine whether a resource leveling approach is possible for MTD and the Glasgow event, consider the following factors:

    Identifying Resource Constraints:

Evaluate whether there are specific resources (e.g., personnel, equipment) that are overallocated or in short supply during certain phases of the project.
    Flexibility in Task Timing:

Assess whether there is flexibility in the start and finish dates of certain tasks. Resource leveling requires some degree of maneuverability in the project schedule to be effective.
    Project Scope and Dependencies:

Consider the dependencies between tasks and the overall project scope. Resource leveling should not compromise the logical sequence of tasks or violate project constraints.
    Project Deadlines:

Understand the criticality of project deadlines. Resource leveling might impact project timelines, and it’s crucial to determine if any adjustments to deadlines are acceptable.
    Stakeholder Communication:

Assess the willingness and ability of stakeholders, including the project team and the client, to accommodate potential changes in the project schedule.
    Utilization of Project Management Tools:

If available, utilize project management tools to analyze the resource allocation and identify areas where leveling could be applied without compromising project objectives.
    Balancing Trade-offs:

Consider the trade-offs between smoothing resource utilization and potential delays in project completion. It’s essential to strike a balance that aligns with project goals and constraints.
    Continuous Monitoring and Adaptation:

Implement a system for continuous monitoring of resource allocation and project progress. Be prepared to adapt the resource leveling strategy as the project evolves.
Without specific details about the project schedule, resource allocations, and dependencies, it’s challenging to provide a definitive answer. However, if there are identified resource constraints or uneven resource distribution, and if there is flexibility in task timing, it’s possible that a resource leveling approach could be considered for MTD and the Glasgow event. The key lies in carefully assessing the specific context and needs of the project.

  222. I would advise that the MTD project should consider to follow the Resource Smoothing approach because this will help them to meet up with their planned deadlines, because it is a timely project. It may increasethe project costs but better than going for a Resource Levelling approach which will increase the project’s costs but will also change the entire project plan causing more delay and the stipulated time would end up failing.

  223. Considering the fact that the MTD water project is already planned and is existing, I would suggest a resource smoothing which is also a time-limited rescheduling should be initiated as the planned time-up for the project will not be extended, the tendency of additional cost is high though but can be managed to the barest minimum.

  224. No, resource leveling won’t be suitable for MTD’s operation.

This is because the events companies must have undergone rigorous work to secure the time frame for their event. Use of resource leveling is most likely going to extend the deadline and won’t be acceptable, as they’d spend more in securing another date or even miss out for the whole of the year than they would in smoothing resources to fit into the available date.

  225. The resource-leveling approach may not be suitable for MTD company as it may cause delays in the processes of their products. I believe the resource-smoothing approach would enable MTD to complete the project on time without any production delays.

  226. Considerating thethe Water Project of MTD does, resource smoothing will be advisable so that deadlines will be met. The phases and project plans wouldn’t change that much except cost implications.

  227. Given that the events been handled by both MTD (the water installation company) and Glasgow events company often times have fixed time frames( both start and end dates), it would be more advisable to adopt resource smoothing approach so as to be able to deliver within the given timeframe, tho it might come at a higher cost but the most important factor would be not to disappoint the sponsors of such events who might have spent much on putting it together within such given timeframes. As long as the end product or service meets up to the required quality and standard.

    1. In my personal opinion, resource leveling can be effectively applied in MTD projects, given that these projects consist of multiple tasks that do not rely solely on one another, especially in the context of utilizing a hybrid or agile project method.

  228. In my opinion, the best approach to adopt in this instance is resources smoothing where the agreed timline is retained. Its better to incure additional cost and satisfy the client by delivering the project ontime. This strengthens the clients trust in your Organisation’s abilities.

  229. Adjust timelines based on resource constraints: Often, the most efficient way to level resources is to adjust the project schedule. This might mean shifting end dates out further to avoid assigning anyone overtime or shortening the project duration by assigning available resources more optimally.

  230. Resources levelling isn’t advisable for MTD cause the project is meant for an event like Olympics whose start date has been fixed. Trying to adopt resources levelling would mean to disappoint the project sponsor. The best approach is to adopt resources smoothing where the planned deadline remain but new resources are being added and the project cost increase. Satisfying and delivering project in the agreed time with clients and stakeholders without disappointment is a value that an organization must have in order to earn the trust of the client.
Additional cost may be involved and variation can be sent later if possible to the project sponsor.
Conclusively, Resources smoothing is the best approach for both MTD and Glasgow

  231. For MTD, resource smoothing is the best bet. For Glasgow, resource levelling could be adopted if the circumstances have been reviewed.

  232. Implementing resources levelling is not feasible for the two companies. It might be risky and can cause rise and fall. The resources smoothing is the best approach to be adopted by MTD (the water installation events company) and the Glasgow event company, They need to incure additional cost and resource over time to avoid disappointing the customers and ensuring a more balanced and efficient workflow.

  233. In the case of MTD company, I will advise them to apply a Resource Smoothing approach since it aim at preserving the planned deadline, which means every clients expect to see their projects been completed on before the planned date.

  234. Resource leveling is the practice of adjusting a project’s start and end dates to accommodate for limited resources. Resource smoothing, meanwhile, entails adjusting the project’s activities to ensure work is completed according to existing timelines.

  235. I’ll vote in the Resource Smoothing approach as it focuses on preserving the planned deadline, it’s okay to only incur an increase in project cost. Resource Leveling approach will increase the project cost, also change or reschedule initial plans on the project, creating a change in project deadline.

  236. For a company like MTD my recommendation to this approach will be Resources Smoothing and not Resources Levelling.

Resource smoothing will help them get the job done on time though at a higher cost but levelling will not make them deliver as at when due.

  237. Resources leveling on the MTD project is going to pose a huge risk of lose to the project. In my opinion, resource leveling for such a complex project could be overwhelming and may jeopardise the success of the project, thus the need for resource smoothing.

    1. I will also go resource smoothing, cos I will rather increase the cost and meet the deadline than rescheduling with possible impact on the deadline.

  238. For MTD, ultimately the show must go on.

With that in mind, applying resource levelling approach will not work. The event must start regardless with everything in place, therefore I would recommend applying the resource smoothing approach. The end date / deadline is preserved but project cost increases .

From the videos, the MTD seems to plans for contingencies anyway in their project plans so this approach will work best for them.

  239. As regards the MTD water installation event company I think resource smoothing will be best this is to give the best services while meeting up with the scheduled time.

  240. Considering the event that happened at Glasglow, I would advice MTD- the water installation events company to follow the Resource Smoothing approach because this gives room to focusing on preserving their planned deadlines in as much as it increases the project costs rather than going for a Resource Leveling approach which will not only increase the project’s costs but will also change and reschedule everything concerning the project, thereby making the project deadline to be changed which would affected the event in Glasglow.

  241. Depending on the constraint i am dealing with, i would level resources as suitable or apply the smoothing approach as suitable to achieve my project objectives

  242. For MTD and their water installation projects, the best approach for them is resource smoothing because client company already has their event day fixed which MTD has to work with. So MTD would rather increase costs in order to preserve planned deadlines.

    1. When we talk about resource levelling, we are talking about rescheduling of project time, delivery date and so on.. This will result in change in the time frame that was agreed on… Giving that MTD Project are time based, it will not be advised to adopt the resource levelling strategy.
On the other hand Resource Smoothing focuses on delivery the project at the agreed deadline and time frame…this may incurr more cost and using overtime. the planned project duration is preserved.
So Resource Smoothing is the sure bet for both MTD and Glasgow

  243. Resource smoothing is the most appropriate for MTD here due to time constraint. It is recommended in order to meet the deadline.

    1. The best approach for them is resource smoothing because client company already has their event day fixed which is the deadline MTD has to work with. So MTD would have to actively increase costs in order to preserve planned deadlines.

    1. Constant communication is one of the major roles of project management with stakeholders. The Project manager should consider oral and written communication including online collaboration which has been proven to have several advantages related to how knowledge is codified and creativity is enhanced when online and co-located teams are combined. Constant communication will bring a mutual agreement, understanding and value sought through collaboration.

  244. I would advise MTD to use the Resource smoothing approach as it would enable them meet stipulated deadlines even if its going to cost them more.

  245. Resource smoothing is the most appropriate for MTD here due to time constraint. It is recommended inorder to meet the deadline.

    1. No. It’s not advisable for MTD to apply resource levelling due to time constraints and the fact that the project is for an event of which they’re only handling a part of (supply of water).
They’ll need to adopt resource smoothing.

  246. I would advise MTD to consider Resource smoothing as it would enable them meet stipulated deadlines. However,They will incur more cost.

  247. with regards to the MTD project, resource soothing is better approach since there’s a set date, time constraint, by providing additional resources to keep the project on course

  248. I think the best strategy and approach for MTD is resource Smoothing considering that the project is time based to meet deadlines.

  249. Due to time constraints and being ale to meet up with the Project deliverables, I would recommend that the MTD water events company opt for Resource smoothing.
Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs

  250. Resource smoothing appears a better option in these cases as the factors (critical and non-critical ) can not be delayed. Time is essential and thus requires allocation of
more resources with the stipulated timelines maintained

  251. MTD main focus was to maintain the project timeline , resource smoothing is the best go to as it focuses on preserving planned deadline. I think its the best strategy at this point even if more cost might be incurred.

  252. Friday Uwhubetine (cohort 10: T 5)

To my mind, the Project Manager at DMT-handling that particular event took the right decision by the deployment of additional resources. Therefore, his choice to use the Smoothie approach, rather than the leveling was well informed.

At the risk of not beating the deadline, incurring more cost (which may be transferred to the sponsors) was well-thought out.
The date for the event had already been scheduled and it was only a couple of days away, so incurring additional costs by way of making arrangements for alternative water supply was on point.

  253. Resource smoothing most definitely appears a better option in these cases. This is especially so as the critical and non-critical factors can not afford to be delayed. Time is of the essence and thus requires more allocation of resources with earlier deadlines maintained.

  254. In MTD ,it wouldn’t be a good idea to use resource levelling , other than that , it can’t work , cause in MTD , THE CRITICAL AND NON CRITICAL EVENTS can’t be delayed or extended cause they required following steps to achieve good distribution of the water and making sure to follow the normal guidlines so as to not have issues with the local authorities and to deliver with the best quality making sure the health of the people who consumes the water is considered . In MTD , i think it would be great to use RESOURCE SMOOTHING to fix the issue of resource overloading

  255. For MTD AND GLASGLOW, Resource smoothing is the best approach to be used in order to be able to meet up with all the deliverables within the timelines for the project.

  256. Considerating Organisation like MTD,i advice that the best approach or process to use is the resource smoothing since it aims at meeting deadlines. Every phases and stage of the project plans would not change or implies more cost implications.

  257. Well, resource smoothing is the best approach to the MTD AND GLASGLOW, after the whole event then there will be a post calculation to prevent the problem form repeating itself

  258. Since the major focus for MTD is to maintain the project timeline. Resource smoothing also called time-limited scheduling is the best strategy to deploy.

  259. In the case of MTD projects, I don’t think it will be okay to apply a resource leveling approach to their project as this can affect the deadline date, preferably resource smoothing can be applied to MTD projects. But in situations where there is still some time left before the planned deadline of a particular project, project leveling can be applied.

  260. With respect to the MTD project, the best option is to use both resource leveling and resource smoothing. This will keep both the cost and the date of delivery in check. because MTD can not afford increase in the cost of production as this will affect selling price; and they lose customers.

  261. In the case of MTD projects, I don’t think it will be okay to apply a resource leveling approach to their project as this can affect the deadline date. But in situations where there is still some time left before the planned deadline of a particular project, project leveling can be applied.

  262. Resource smoothing approach is adviced, such project demands serious time frame and the time frame should be strictly adhered to..

  263. While resource smoothing seeks to preserve the date and increase the costs to achieve a successful project, Resource leveling, focuses on maintaining the available resources and increasing the deadline of the project to achieve a successfully project.
Now, applying this to MTD, the water installation company, and the Glasgow events company, to achieve a successful installation of water by the project managers, Resource smoothing is the best approach to implement when handling the water installation project

  264. As PM of MTD you need to analyse the advantage of each resource and the program at hand, this is either levelling or smoothing. Since deadline is of more important to this project resource smoothing will be the right one to use.

  265. For every project, there is a paramount outcome. As a PM on MTD , knowing fully well that deadline most be met. I will subscribe to resource smoothing, as this will be the best approach. Increase in cost might be the price to pay , however, project will be met and delivered to the client before deadline. As long as QUALITY is not compromise in the long run.

However, in a situation where deadline can be adjusted. I will always subscribe to resource leveler, as it helps one to manage resources better, reschedule if need be because I believe above all things, effective management of resources is the core of a PM job

  266. Resource Smoothing focuses on balancing resource utilization while allowing some flexibility in the project schedule to accommodate fluctuations in resource availability.
Resource Leveling aims to achieve a constant and steady resource utilization rate throughout the project, often with less schedule flexibility, by redistributing tasks or activities. The best approach for MTD would be Resource Smoothing. However, Extra cost will be incurred during the project.

  267. Since MTD is an event Planning Organization that has a deadline for the supply of water for Glasgow, I think Resource Smoothing approach will be best for the organization

  268. Considering all the factors in resource levelling and resource smoothing, the best for MTD to use for the project is Resource Smoothing: because it is a time conscious approach which is one of the keys in MTD project seen so far.

  269. Since MTD is an event-planning organization. It should be a combination depending on the context and time contraints.

  270. Given the pre-scheduled event with a fixed deadline, it is apparent that the Resource Levelling approach is not suitable for MTD (the project in question). In this scenario, the most viable option is Resource Smoothing, albeit with the associated consequence of an incremental increase in project costs.

  271. Resource smoothing should be considered by MTD because it’s focus is to preserve the planned project duration and it’s deadlines. So in other for them to meet up with the stipulated timeframe, resource smoothing is best though exra cost will be invited.

  272. For the MTD project, resource leveling is not considered the best approach, but rather resource smoothing as it focuses on preserving planned deadlines rather than rescheduling which would cause an impact on project deadlines

  273. Since there isn’t enough time for the event to accommodate resource leveling for the MTD project, I’ll recommend resource smoothing instead because the cost of the water will not be as detrimental as missing the deadline.
Therefore, even if it has a financial and resource effect, my recommendation for MTD is to remain with resource smoothing since resource leveling will change the project deadline, which could compromise the company’s reputation.

    1. Resource smoothing is important to the successful completion of project. When resources utilization fluctuates wildly_that is, when there are large peaks and valleys in the workflow _it can result in a project going over in terms of budget and timeline.By smoothing out the workflow, the project can be more effectively managed, reducing the budget and timeline.
Furthermore, getting on accurate timeline also helps with resource allocation,as the team can better predict which resource will be needed and when.
In view of these resource smoothing will be more effective in MTD project.

  274. My advise for MTD is to stick to resource smoothing though its has a cost and resource effect, the deadlines for the project will be met.
On the other hand, using resource leveling would have serious impact on the project's deadline and the already communicate dates for the events will be negatively affected. This can result to a serious devastation for Glasgow management. Hence, resource smoothing is better than
resource leveling because the latter will alter the project deadline which can affect the company integrity.

  275. At MTD and with the nature to f the project, Resource smoothing which considers deadlines and when it has to do with water, it will involve drinking as well, which price tag cannot be placed on the value of life. So the increase in costs should not be applied.

  276. With the MTD project applying resource leveling is a wrong choice as there is no buffer time for the event to accommodate that, instead I will advise resource smoothing as the water cost will not hurt like not meeting the deadline .

  277. For the MTD project, resource smoothing is a better option especially because meeting a client’s deadline is of utmost importance as well as upholding the company’s integrity while paying for extra cost

  278. With respect to the MTD Glasgow event, resource leveling will be a wrong approach because the project deadline cannot be changed. The entire project objective was to supply drinking water to an event and the date of the event was fixed.
Resource smoothing will be the right approach although it will impact the project cost.

    1. Resource levelling wii be a wrong approach because the deadline for the project cannot be extended. Resource smoothing is the better approach although costlier

  279. For a well structured system like MTD, resource smoothening would be best. Their timelines are already programed and would not appreciate the change in schedule that comes with resource levelling.
But then it is important to note the specific details and constraints of the MTD/Glasgow event, the available resources , project requirements and stakeholder expectations would be necessary to make an informed decision.

    1. Most MTD projects are focused towards achieving a goal for an event. This means the timeline must be followed. For a well structured system like MTD, resource smoothening would be a better option. Their timelines have already been programed, a change in schedule that comes with resource levelling will not help the project.
But then it is important to note the specific details and constraints that comes with achieving the MTD Glassglows project so as to better advice

  280. With the need to achieve the required quality, time, cost and the delivery of the project at the stated deadline, I will adopt the resource smoothing strategy as a project manager. Although resource smoothing may increase the project’s cost for an added but efficient team member etc., It will be in the interest of my client knowing that the work will qualitatively advance and the project realised earlier or in time. won’t accept any redundancy at all during the project.
On the other hand, given that project deadline rescheduling is the goal of resource levelling, MTD must not adopt this approach because it does not really modify the project’s present capacity and quality within the stipulated time.
In fact, it will be preferable for me the PM to loose some finances in the new team mate that will be hired and gain trust for better future projects as the qualitative work is executed and handed with the deadline

  281. Using recourse levelling for projects like MTD may alter the deadline by extending the project time, therefore, resource smoothing is better off for this project

  282. For the MTD Glasgow event, using the leveling method might completely alter the chain of events and impact negativity outcome with a new deadline which may not favour the event so the best approach is resource smoothing

    1. For Glasgow events I feel an alterations in their dates or deadlines may have an effect on them. Therefore resource smoothing might work better for them. Better still the sponsor can also look at the scope to see how it can be expanded

  283. For the water project at MTD ,resource levelling will not be the best option because of the fixed date for the project but using the resource smoothing approach will be useful for the project and the stakeholders.

  284. I think resource leveling would not be the best approach here because if the project sponsor wishes to change the capacity of the project, the approach won’t allow it. So resource smoothing is the best approach to it

  285. Considering the type of project MTD work on which is connected to events and water. Resource levelling approach will most likely not be feasible because events are usually fixed and announced, vendors booked, date sets and even the event center or field readily booked for the date. In this case, Resource smoothing is most feasible. Even though additional cost will be incurred, it can be reduced to ensure it doesn’t strain the stakeholder, parties and company involved and at the end of the day it’s a win win situation, event goes on as slated for deadline, resources is available and project is done.

  286. Resource smoothing may be the best option to achieve the project according to slated timelines and according to float. Resource levelling may extend the timeline for the project.

    1. Resource smoothing may be the best option to achieve the project according to slated timelines and according to float. Resource levelling may extend the timeline for the project.

  287. I think it would be more feasible to implement a resource smoothing approach so as to meet the assigned project deadline rather than restructuring using the resource levelling approach.

    1. Resource smoothing Is the best to me as a project manager in achieving my set goal because my project with be done within the stipulated time, timeline of the project will not be affected.
While in the Case of resource leveling the timeline will be extended thereby incurring most cost to the project.

  288. For the scenario with MTD, resource levelling is possible. A reassessment may have to be done to find overcapacity and then reschedule activities. This could also reduce cost.

  289. The impact of the project cost and the willingness of clients to accept the increase in project cost will largely determine the resource allocation strategies that better suit the project.

Considering the MTD case study where the service provision (Water Supply) is essential and without options, the resource smoothing strategy will be critical to ensure that the project is delivered within the scheduled timeline and within the expected quality not minding the slight increase in cost.

  290. I do not think that applying a resource levelling approach will bode well. This is because MTD projects are very time sensitive and have very little leeway for float periods or reschedulling; the events they set up waterworks for are time sensitive. A resource levelling approach may cause significant impact on project delivery deadline and may render the project a failure.

Resource smoothing is the best approach to be able to deliver quality water on time. This will impact project costs which are usually absorbed by contingency costs that are embedded during initial project planning and costing.

  291. In MTD project, I would lean towards implementing a resource smoothing approach. It focuses on balancing resource demand over time, which can help ensure that resources are allocated efficiently while still meeting the deadline.

  292. Resource smoothing is the best approach for MTD project because it focuses on preserving planned deadlines but, it will increase the costs.

  293. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadline though the project cost will increase while Resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses on rescheduling with a possible impact on project deadlines.

Looking at the difference between the two strategies, the MTD water project has to been delivered to the users at an estimated time, hence the best strategy to apply is the Resources smoothing while taking into cognizance that the cost will increase.

    1. As a project manager, putting in to consideration MTD the water installation events and the Glasgow event. The best approach is resource smoothing which the original project death lines will be maintained, although there must be increase in cost of project same of the factor to play with are time, cost and quality within the project as manager.

  294. Resource smoothing aims to achieve the original project deadlines although project costs will be increased . while resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but emphasizes on rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadline.Resource smoothing is the best approach for the MTD project, since it is an event which is time bound, Only that the cost for the project might increase. But quality will be obtained and you will be able to deliver on time.

  295. Resources rescheduling due to its impact on deliverables deadline will not work for MTD but rather a time- limited scheduling approach, that is resource smoothening because it preserved planned deadlines though it comes at an additional cost, Hower, the MTD have always included contingency, redundancy
costs etc into their budgets and events organisers were always ready to absorb the extra cost while MTD breaks even.

    1. Resource leveling is the adjustment of project start and ending days to align for short resources while resource smoothing is the adjustment done to ensure that project is completed according to available timeline

  296. Applying resource leveling for the MTD Water Project is feasible but MTD projects are for events and the events are timebound, hence resource smoothing will be the best approach because it focuses on preserving the planned deadlines.

    1. Due to the time frame and the MTD projects that is majorly for events, resources levelling may not be the best approach because it will definitely after the delivery date, hence resources smoothing will be far better since their is contigencies cost already included in the budget .

      1. I bargain for resource smoothing, due to the fact that, MTD caters for events which are time bound, the cost increase could be factor into the continencies and redundancy cost already programmed for.

  297. Resource leveling vs resource smoothing: The basics Resource leveling is the practice of adjusting a project’s start and end dates to accommodate for limited resources. Resource smoothing, meanwhile, entails adjusting the project’s activities to ensure work is completed according to existing timelines.

  298. Resource smoothing is the best approach for the MTD project, since it is an event which is time bound, Only that the cost for the project might increase and there might have to be adjustments. All the same the quality of the project will be same as it was intended in the beginning of the project.

  299. Projects have deadlines and they must be maintained for various benefits. Resource smoothing can be appropriate in this project to meet the completion date.

  300. Resource smoothing is the appropriate strategy to adopt based on the clients MTD works with and the nature of the client’s project because MTD clients always have a defined start date to begin their projects, and such a set date cannot be changed once fixed.

  301. The best approach for the MTD project is resource something because it has a planned deadline even tho it might increase the project cost to be able to meet the deadline on has planned

    1. Resource smoothing can indeed be a beneficial approach for the MTD water project in the given circumstances. It allows for the adjustment of resources, such as adding new ones or using overtime, to ensure that the project stays on schedule and aligns with the required finish date. This method can be effective in managing time constraints and preserving the planned project duration. However, it’s important to carefully balance resource allocation to avoid overloading or causing burnout among the project team members when using overtime. Additionally, monitoring and controlling costs associated with resource adjustments is crucial to ensure the project remains within budget.

  302. The better approach to take for MTD project is Resource Smoothing since it involves a set deadline which is important to meet. Though this approach would require that there is increase in cost, it is a better approach than Research levelling.

  303. I don’t think resource levelling will work in a project like MTD, this project is time-bound as it is for an event { planned date cannot be rescheduled ) so instead of levelling i will go for smoothing.

  304. Considering the MTD water project, resource smoothing is the best approach since the require date has been set and there is a time constraint and it focuses on preserving the planned project duration and its finish date by adding new resources to the project or substituting current resources with a new one with greater capacity and also by using overtime to increase the availability of resources this is to keep the project align with the scheduled.

    Thanks

  305. The best approach is the Resource Smoothing since it is a time based project.
Resource smoothing is about preserving planned deadlines but increasing project cost, this should be applicable to the MTD project in Glasgow. The event in question has been scheduled to go life in 3days, so invoking the resource levelling wouldn’t have been feasible and they would have gone past the initial planned deadline. Using the resource smoothing method is the best approach since there is a build in redundancy in the project cost for such occurance in anticipation of any setback.

    1. The most reliable and approach is the Resources smoothing it gives guide to project manager and teams also, so every one keed their eye and mind fixed on the date the project need to be completed more importantly it helps manager to plan and coordinate the project progress in sequence manner. Thanks

    2. Resource smoothing is best used in a certain project to meet up the deadline;though, the cost will be allocated to get the best results while resource leveling it maintain same cost though the deadline will slow and cost will be managed

  306. Since deadline has been fixed,
Resource smoothing will be a good options because it preserves planned deadlines even if it would result in increased cost unlike the resource levelling which will not meet up deadlines

  307. Resource smoothing is all about preserving planned deadlines but increasing project cost, this should be applicable to the MTD project in Glasgow. The event in question has been scheduled to go life in 3days, so invoking the resource levelling wouldn’t have feasible and they would have gone past the initial planned deadline. Using the resource smoothing method is the best approach since there is a build in redundancy in the project cost for such occurance in anticipation of any setback.

  308. Seeing that resource levelling unlike resource smoothing doesn’t change the capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on the project deadline. In the case of MTD, the event (project deadline) had already been fixed, so applying resource levelling wont be feasible as it will have adverse effect on the time already been mapped out for the event. Resource smoothing will be a better option as it preserves planned deadlines even if it would result in increased cost.

  309. The best approach as a Pm is resource smoothing as a change in cost does not matter but meeting dead line does.

  310. Well I think it would be challenging to employ Resource levelling at that event for MTD this is because I believe the project schedule is clear and the main sport event cannot be postponed due to MTD’s inability to meet deadline.

The best course of action for MTD to take in order to reduce serious impact of the project will be to use Resource Smoothing to get the project to completion within the stipulated time even though it will cost the sponsors more money but the main aim which is to support the sport event would have been achieved.

  311. Resource levelling wouldn’t have been a good idea for the MTD company because it would have altered the project deadline. The Glasgow event was already close at hand and rescheduling an international sport event would increase costs with negative impact on all stakeholders.
This was why MTD opted for resourse smoothing as they added new resourses to the project for contingency provision of more water till the end of the sport event.

  312. Resource levelling would have worked for MTD at the Glasgow event, due to the closeness to the project deadline (3 days to the event starting). It would have been easier to reschedule the the project activities (more expensive) but would not affect the project delivery date. In addition, resource smoothing wouldn’t have been the best option it there was neither enough time to increase capacity nor shift the project delivery date.

  313. To ensure the planned event is not impacted, it is advisable that MTD employs Resource Smoothing. This involves prioritizing critical activities and de-prioritizing non-critical ones to optimize available resources and deliver the project as originally planned since the date of the event has already been fixed. Additional resources can be added or a few hours of overtime can be considered, although this may increase costs.

  314. Though meeting deadlines sometimes can be very tasking and stressful, but timely delivery promotes trust and reliability it also meet needs at the appropraite time. I will rather chose smoothing for MTD. Resource leveling can be considered only if all options of resource smoothing fails.

  315. Resource Smoothing is the best approach for this event as the deadline for this event has been fixed, For resource smoothing, I will add more experienced personnel to the project so as to meet the deadline.

  316. Resource Smoothing is the best approach for this event as the deadline for this event has been fixed, For the resource smoothing, I will add more experienced personnel to the project so as to meet the deadline.

  317. Looking at this scenario in MTD and Glaslow events, resource levelling can not be used in a time based project.
It is necessary to adopt the resource smoothing approach and increase the cost with allocating more personnel and resources and still making sure the schedule for the project remains consistent.

  318. As a project manager, the resource smoothing is the best option. Resource smoothing in other to complete the project before the deadline though this can actually cost them more, yet is far better than resource levelling because end users are waiting at the time scheduled

  319. Leveling of resources assist in balancing of the amount of workdone on the resources and ease capacity.
Resource smoothing is helpful when confronted with limited resources or very costly one. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadline

    1. As a PM and considering the MTD approach I’ll work with Resource Smoothing since it aims is to maintain the original project deadlines while increasing project costs rather than working with Resource Levelling which will want me to rescheduling my client projects.

  320. Resource smoothing is particularly useful when dealing with resources that are limited or expensive, such as specialized equipment or skilled personnel. The emphasis is on minimizing resource peaks and valleys without significantly impacting project timelines. The best approach is resource smoothing which is best for a time-based project like MTD installation project because of the nature of the event.

  321. leveling of resources is very important in projects because it helpsin balancing of the workloads on the resources which helps in alligning usdeage with the avaliable capacity. resource levelling does not change the current capacity.

resource smoothing helps in preservinga planned deadline but increeases the project cost.

    1. In the case of MTD resource smoothing is the best approach
One of the reasons is that it’s a water distributing company that distributes clean water to events
So there is no room for rescheduling as the timeline for the event is fixed

  322. COHORT 9,TEAM 7
    OBINWA CHIMAMAKA.
The question says do you think it would it be possible to apply a resource levelling approach?
The aim of resource levelling is to balance workload on resources to align with their available capacity and it does this by shifting the schedule of project activities thus extending deadline. In the case of MTD,the even had already been fixed,so applying resource levelling wont be feasible as it will alter the time already been mapped out for the event.Resource smoothing will be a better option as it preserves planned deadlines.

  323. Keeping a tap on the MTD water project, I will go for the resource smoothing which is optimal for a time based project, though cost will be affected, it is better than resource levelling which has to do with reschedule or not meeting deadline.

  324. Because of the importance of water for the sporting project which has been fixed, resource smoothing is best applicable. This means the entire organisation focuses on preserving the planned project duration and its deadlines by applying more resources to the project.
    .

  326. Resource smoothing focuses on maintaining a consistent level of resource utilization throughout the project duration and is such ideal in this case than resource levelling which focuses on adjusting timing which could lead to delays and affect the overall success of the project

The primary goal is to avoid abrupt fluctuations in resource demand. This technique allows for some flexibility in the start and finish times of activities as long as project deadlines are met.

Resource smoothing is particularly useful when dealing with resources that are limited or expensive, such as specialized equipment or skilled personnel.

The emphasis is on minimizing resource peaks and valleys without significantly impacting project timelines.

In the context of Glasgow sporting events, resource smoothing would involve spreading out the utilization of facilities, equipment, and personnel to prevent sudden surges in demand of available resources without compromising the overall event schedule.

  327. Since the water project of MTD is for a specific schedule event, resource smoothing is best. For the Glasgow project which had definite deadline, resource smoothing is also the best option.

  328. The resource levelling approach may not be applicable in the mtd event water firm, it’ll rather use resource smoothening considering the perennial needs of water in the events and the negativity of rescheduling

  329. Projects have deadlines and they must be maintained for various benefits. Resource smoothing can be appropriate in this project in order to meet the completion date.

  330. The best approach is resource Smoothing which is best for a time-based project like MTD installation project because of the nature of the event.

  331. Resource smoothing will be the best approach to use because the event company has a deadline to meet. When this deadline is missed, it will have a great impact on the purpose of the project

  332. As a PM, resource levelling is better hence it does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadline.

  333. Taking a look into the MTD Water project, resource smoothing is best advisable to kick against a delay in project delivery while incurring additional cost and training. The Glasglow event has a specified delivery date which the company cannot afford to extend further, therefore resource smoothing is best fit to keep to date.

    1. Fromu understanding Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs whic smooth the running of the project while On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

  334. Delaying the deadline might be catastrophic
So, resource smoothing is the best option…unless all the stakeholders are agree to postpone the deadline

  335. From Cohort 9 Team 6,
Based on the type of clients MTD deals with and the nature of the client’s project, Resource Smoothing is the best approach to apply because MTD clients always have a fixed start date to commence their projects and such set date cannot be changed once fixed.

  336. Well, in this senerio resource levelling can be applied at the beginning of the project. When the event has not commenced. MTD water installation events company can ask for additional time which will enable them to arrive the venue some days to the event, so as to check their equipment Incase there is any issue on ground and rectify it on time. But as soon as the event commences there will be no room to ask for additional time to fix any problem, rather more resources will be put in place, which means extra cost. This is where resource smoothing comes into play.

So I would say that it is possible to apply resource levelling approach to the Glasgow event.

  337. Since to delay the supply of water will put on hold so many other things dependent on it, then resource smoothing will be the best option for me.

  338. Resource smoothing and resource leveling are two techniques used in Project management to manage and optimize the allocation of resources. While they both aim to achieve a balance between resource availability and Project Requirements.
Resource smoothing aims to adjust resource allocation while keeping the Project schedule intact, focusing on avoiding resource peaks and troughs. Resource leveling involves adjusting the Project schedule to achieve a more even distribution of resources, even if it means extending the Project duration.
As MTD’s Project manager I will work with resource smoothing

  339. For me,

I wouldn’t choose one over the other without understanding the risk in relation to project duration and cost. This is my option on a more board view.

But if am to pick just an approach out of the two options. My first will be to consider resource smoothing.
In as much as applying the resource leveling seems more ideal considering cost I would opt for resource smoothing since project is time-based. But if rushing project (i.e. applying the resource smoothing approach) would result in quality of project been affected, i recommend a meeting with stakeholders to decide on the possible option.

  340. MTD is a water production company and water is very important, infact some organizations or businesses can not be productive without water for instance, food production companies, having said this resource smoothing will be preferred to levelling, even though there is increased cost, yet meeting the deadline is paramount, the end users may definitely procure with increased costs

    1. In the case of the MTD water installation company it’s better to go with the resource smoothing than resource levelling which implies rescheduling or not meeting the deadline.

  341. Considering the MTD water project, my best approach would be to go with resource smoothing which is ideal for a deadline and time based project. Even though it’s going to have affect on the cost, it’s better to go with the resource smoothing than resource levelling which implies rescheduling or not meeting the deadline.
With using the resource smoothing approach, the company would be able to meet up with the expected deadline and delivery a quality outcome.

  342. In the case of MTD, I would suggest Resource Smoothing, though it may require extra cost but because the nature of their projects has a timeframe, They wouldn’t want to risk not being able to deliver at the stipulated time.

  343. In the case of MTD, resource levelling is applicable to avoid additional cost contrary to resource smoothing.

  344. Considering the fact that MTD Water Project is an event project which is based on a time frame for delivery, resource levelling will not work. I suggest they apply resource smoothing.

  345. MTD and glasgow as we have been following throughout this course are companies which events have deadlines and the stakeholders involved may not have the luxury of time to reschedule events hence, a resource smoothing would be advised in order to ensure that the event is preserved

  346. I would recommend resource smoothing for MTD’s water project for their event management program. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. Resource smoothing aims at delivering in line with such challenge and employing extra hands to enable them deliver within the time bound of the project.

    1. In this context of MTD water project, resource smoothening would work better in the sense that the project has originally been planned to be executed within a specified timeframe and the resources addition can cover up for gap that would otherwise extend the deadline of the project

  347. MTD deals with planned events, these events have deadlines and the stakeholders involved may not have the luxury of time to reschedule events. In this case, resource leveling will not suffice rather a resource smoothing will have to be considered to preserve the event.
Now the problem becomes who bears the cost, MTD or project sponsor. To look at this issue, the PM will have to understand where the problem originated from. Let’s say, the water supplied by the client is not suitable for the event for failing consumption test, the client will have to bear the cost, similarly if it was as a result of poor information from the sponsor the sponsor bears the cost so also if was a result of poor resource allocation by the PM he will also bear the cost.

  348. MTD projects have to do with events which have deadlines such as; date of deployment & execution to meet up with scheduled on a timeline. It could be too demanding on all stakeholders involved to have project execution rescheduled for instance.
Resource smoothing applies here in order to meet up with scheduled timelines. .

  349. Considering MTD, the water installation and the Glasgow event we’ve been following so far in this I believe it would it be possible to apply a resource levelling approach, this is possible because shifting the scheduling of project activities within their available floats. That way workload on resources would align with resources available without any increment in costs
    COHORT 9 TEAM 8

  350. Using MTD and glasgow event as a case study, I will rather recommend resource smoothing as to meet up with the fixed deadline for deliverable and quality outcome and output is expected while extending time frame by resource leveling approach is not advisable

  351. In my opinion taking MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event as a case study, resource smoothing might possibly be the best option. This is due to the fact that the project has already fixed date and the sponsor is already aware. Using resource leveling can disrupt planned activities for the event day, which invariably will have a negative impact on the image of the company

  352. Using MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event as a case study, I will recommend resource smoothing. This is because the event working towards has already fixed date and the client/sponsor must have sent out invitations. Using resource leveling (deadline rescheduling) can eat up into the event day and this is capable of affecting the company’s reputation.

  353. For MTD is will be really difficult to apply resources levelling for them because the have a bottled next time line to deliver the process, but resources levelling can only be applied if the project was started much earlier, but this is subject to discussion with stakeholders.
The best method that can work best for the company is resources smoothing,so they can bring in more work force and complete the project within time frame though at an extra cost.
Should the project become very difficult,a visit of the scope of the scope with the stakeholders will be the best option necessary.

  354. COHORT 9, TEAM 3. CYNTHIA ONYINYE OKEKE.
Considering the MTD, water installation company and the event at Glasgow, Resource levelling will only be possible if the issues is discovered at the early phase of the project.
If the issue is discovered during the final phase of executing the project and the deadline is fast approaching, Resource smoothing in the form of additional resource (calling for backup from a similar company) or working overtime by the MTD project team will be the best option at the time because the project deadline is time sensitive, even though it will add to the project cost. That is why the MTD project manager mentioned that the clients are encouraged to budget for unforeseen cost. Though it is expensive, it ensures that the quality of the project deliverables are maintained.

  355. I think resource smoothing is best for MTD, the water installation events company and Glasglow event. Adding new resources to project will help meet project deadline and may also lead to the production of quality output.

  356. What safeguards the project’s time frame is putting resources in place for project like MTD. THIS IS CRUCIAL in timely delivery.

  357. My take using the MTD water project as a case file, is to go with resource levelling because the industry is a sensitive one and I would rather pay ample attention to quality than cost.
Resource smoothing would give the PM and team time to go over every step, check and recheck quality, proper audit, more professional can be brought in to evaluate the project’s original intended value/ expectation.
However, this would mean rescheduling the deadline by extension. Having a satisfied client with clean and safe water is more beneficial as a PM

    1. Using MTD and Glasgow event’s,
Smoothing will be the best approach to avoid altering customers deadline given that the project has a fixed time. This will increase opex but project will be delivered on time. Leveling will extend deadline hence affecting customers expectations.

  358. Absolutely, applying a resource leveling approach could be highly beneficial for MTD, the water installation events company, particularly when considering the Glasgow event featured in the course videos. Resource leveling involves adjusting project activities to even out resource utilization, thereby preventing overloading and ensuring a more balanced workload for the available resources.

In the context of MTD and the Glasgow event, resource leveling could address various challenges. For instance, if certain tasks require specialized equipment or skilled personnel, resource leveling could help ensure that these resources are efficiently allocated without causing bottlenecks or delays. This approach could also aid in managing the availability of materials, preventing shortages and avoiding last-minute rushes that might compromise the quality of the event setup.

Furthermore, given the unpredictable nature of event planning, resource leveling could provide a structured way to handle unexpected changes or additional tasks that might arise during the event preparation phase. By optimizing resource allocation and maintaining a smoother workflow, MTD can enhance its overall efficiency and deliver a successful event experience.

However, it’s important to note that resource leveling might require adjustments to project timelines and potentially impact the critical path of the project. This could influence event deadlines and dependencies, so careful planning and communication are key. Overall, when implemented thoughtfully, resource leveling can play a crucial role in enhancing MTD’s ability to manage its water installation events and deliver exceptional results for clients.

I would recommend resource smoothing for MTD’s water project for their event management program. MTD deals with sponsors who work with dead lines and have time bound for each project.

In the short video by the project manager, the major problem was not cost but delivery time. This made him to create an alternative which was the introduction of a sprint. The alteration did not affect the time of delivery and this is the aim os resource smoothing which I will strongly recommend.

  360. I would recommend resource smoothing for MTD’s water project for their event management program. MTD deals with sponsors who work with dead lines and have time bound for each project. From the video by the project manager, cost was not the major problem but delivery time, this is why they went extra mile to create an alternative. There was a sprint application that was a mini project in the main work float, that sprint was created to ensure they met the dead line which was most important at that time for that particular project. The alterations made did not affect the initial delivery time only the work float that wasn’t incorporated initially. As long as the job was delivered within the stipulated time, which was the focus of the company. Resource smoothing aims at delivering in line with such challenge and I would recommend it for this particular event project.

  361. Resource leveling is not feasible, particularly for MTD pure water supplies. The project would result in delays and increased costs, as acknowledged by the project manager in one of the videos. To meet the immediate water requirements and ensure clean, uncontaminated water for the upcoming event just three days away, the project team had to resort to using water tankers and buffer bags. This approach, known as project smoothing, required additional expenses but allowed them to deliver water on time despite the contamination of the initial planned water delivery source or pipe, with the event organizers covering the extra costs.

MTD WATER PROJEC: It is crucial to adopt a resource-leveling strategy to achieve the desired objectives.

Considering the delayed non-critical tasks approach in resource leveling, the project can maintain its progress within the available float period without affecting the critical path. This approach aims to balance the demand for resources while considering their potential and capacity.

This approach is indeed viable as it ensures a stable workload without altering the existing resource capacity. Instead, it focuses on rescheduling, which may impact project deadlines. Whatever the cost required to complete the project, it will be made feasible. If additional workforce is needed to expedite a process, it will be arranged accordingly.

    1. According to the lesson, it is made clear that Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines

      1. It is obvious that Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs.

        1. I think that resource smoothing helps to maintain deadlines which will be the best approach for MTD project. I suggest in choosing this method they should employ more hands in other to meet up with the time.
