How do resource smoothing and resource leveling differ from each other?

Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

The accompanying diagram, sourced from the APM Body of Knowledge, provides a comparison between the two approaches.

At a more significant level of impact, certain projects undergo more than just rescheduling or resource allocation adjustments. They may undergo a reevaluation of their project scope by the project sponsor. This involves a broader analysis of the entire project and requires reconsideration of how time, cost, and quality interact within the project.

A prime example is the review of large-scale infrastructure projects like railways. Such projects often undergo rescaling due to increased costs, resulting in significant deviations from the original plans. The consequences of these revisions can affect the client and a wider range of stakeholders and may even result in the loss of subsequent work opportunities (Kerzner, 2009, p. 529).

Now, let’s consider MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event that you have been following in the course videos thus far. When examining the provided figure, do you think it would be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario?

  1. Given the deadline they have and that the event cannot be moved to a new date.
MTD has to deliver before the sports event commences.
Resource smoothing is the best option for the MTD project.

  2. Based on the past experience, complexity of the project, the project scope and unpredicted environment, rescheduling resources within their available capacity will be a better option for MTD project.
This approach leverage on stable workload in order to avoid the risk of stress.

  3. Applying a resource levelling approach to MTD’s Glasgow event might be challenging, considering the project’s scope and complexity. Resource levelling aims to balance resource allocation to minimize delays and bottlenecks. However, in a project like the Glasgow event, which involves multiple stakeholders, vendors, and logistical considerations, revising the project scope might be more appropriate.

Given the potential for unforeseen issues and changes in stakeholder requirements, a more flexible approach like agile project management might be better suited for MTD’s event planning. This would allow for iterative planning, continuous improvement, and adaptability to changing circumstances.

If a resource levelling approach were to be applied, it would likely require significant adjustments to the project timeline, budget, and resource allocation. This could lead to trade-offs between time, cost, and quality, potentially impacting the event’s overall success and stakeholder satisfaction.

In cases like large infrastructure projects or complex events like MTD’s Glasgow event, a comprehensive project scope revision, as mentioned in the text, might be a more effective approach to address changes and challenges, ensuring the project meets its objectives and delivers the desired outcomes.

  4. Certainly, the implementation of resource leveling is deemed essential in this scenario.
Considering MTD’s role as a water installation events company involved in the Glasgow event, the application of resource leveling could significantly enhance resource Allocation strategies and ultimately lead to the success of the event.

In conclusion, the adoption of a resource leveling approach holds strong feasibility for MTD due to their capacity to leverage past data effectively, engage stakeholders collaboratively, and remain adaptable to changing event dynamics.

In resource smoothing, project deadlines is maintained while project costs is increased. And for resource leveling project costs is maintained while project deadlines is extended.

From one of the course videos (Identifying the cost of quality in a project) the MTD representative stated that they build in a certain amount of redundancy into the system to for see problems or challenges like additional spec or extra resource that is required on the job. And in another course video (planning for quality) where they had contamination from the main source which happen 3 days before the venue go life. Rather than extending the deadlines they brought in water tanker and kept to the deadline.

From the course videos above, it would be feasible for MTD to implement a resource smoothing approach in this scenario because it’s already built into their system.

  7. Yes, applying resource levelling will be necessary. MTD and Glasgow have similar activities situations of multiple tasks. Resource levelling will aid in allocating resources evenly to avoid overallocation or underallocation during the project. It could also reduce potential delays on the project ensuring balanced work load. It can also help in uptimizing resources allocation and uptimization

  8. Reflecting on MTD, the water installation events company, and their involvement in the Glasgow event, resource leveling could significantly optimize resource allocation and contribute to a successful event. By leveraging historical data and event experience, MTD can make informed resource allocation decisions based on insights from past events. Close collaboration with stakeholders—including teams, vendors, and clients—to understand their needs and constraints is crucial. This ensures all parties are aligned and resources are allocated where they are most needed.

Implementing a flexible resource allocation strategy allows MTD to adjust allocations as event requirements evolve. Continuous monitoring and real-time adjustments are essential for maintaining optimal resource leveling, ensuring resources are used efficiently throughout the event.

Overall, adopting a resource leveling approach appears highly feasible for MTD, given their ability to utilize past data, collaborate with stakeholders, and remain adaptable to changing event requirements.

  9. A convenient approach for MTD would be the resource smoothing. How that, based on the fixed event date it would be unprofessional to reschedule date, however, increasing cost and maintaining the planned deadline will be a more possible option to achieve the goal.
While for Glasgow, resource levelling will be an effective approach to get the project done.

  10. Using a resource smoothing approach is more feasible for MTD even though additional cost may be incurred but the project gets to meet the agreed deadline. While for Glasgow,a resource leveling approach can be used

  11. Thoughts on “A comprehensive view on resource overload considering MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event( PM Course discussion)”

In the context of MTD, the water installation events company managing the Glasgow event, let’s clarify the concepts of resource smoothing and resource leveling first:

1.Resource Smoothing: This involves adjusting the amount of resource usage over a period to accommodate fluctuations in demand or resource availability, while still meeting project deadlines. The focus is on managing resource utilization to avoid peaks and valleys, thus smoothing out the resource usage curve.

2.Resource Leveling: This refers to adjusting the project schedule to ensure that the demand for resources does not exceed certain predefined limits. The goal is to avoid resource over-allocation by shifting activities within their slack allowances or by adjusting the project schedule.

Given this understanding, let’s consider whether implementing a resource leveling approach would be feasible for MTD in managing the Glasgow event:

    – Nature of Events: Events like the one managed by MTD often have specific deadlines and fixed durations. This makes resource leveling a relevant consideration because it ensures that resources are neither over-allocated nor underutilized during critical stages of the project.

    – Resource Constraints: MTD might face constraints such as availability of water installation equipment, skilled labor, and possibly even venue restrictions (such as access times). Resource leveling helps in optimizing the use of these resources throughout the project duration, ensuring that all requirements are met without unnecessary strain or underutilization.

    – Feasibility Assessment: To determine if resource leveling is feasible for MTD, it would be essential to analyze the resource requirements and constraints for the Glasgow event. This involves identifying critical resources, understanding their availability over time, and then adjusting the project schedule accordingly to smooth out resource utilization peaks.

    – Implementation Challenges: Implementing resource leveling requires careful planning and coordination. MTD would need to have detailed schedules, clear communication channels, and possibly use project management tools to track resource allocations and adjust schedules as needed.

Conclusion: Considering the nature of MTD’s work in managing water installation for events like the Glasgow event, implementing a resource leveling approach appears feasible and beneficial. It would help in optimizing resource usage, ensuring that critical resources are efficiently allocated throughout the project timeline, thereby enhancing overall project management effectiveness and meeting client expectations.

  12. For MTD, resource smoothing works as it helps them meet their deadlines, it allows MTD to maintain original project deadlines even though project costs will increase, with these stakeholders and investor will not be lost.
MTD can successfully adopt the resource leveling approach as they can leverage on the use of past data and event experience to Inform resource allocation decisions with insights from such past events. They can also collaborate with stakeholders, work closely with teams, vendors, and clients to understand their needs and constraints.

  13. For MTD, resource smoothing works as it helps them meet their deadlines, it allows MTD to maintain original project deadlines even though project costs will increase, with these stakeholders and investor will not be lost.
WHILE Resource leveling is better methodology to apply for Gaslow project as it cost effective.

Considering MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, resource leveling could be a valuable approach to optimize resource allocation and ensure a successful event.
I think MTD can successfully adopt the resource leveling approach as they can leverage on the use of past data and event experience to Inform resource allocation decisions with insights from such past events. They can also collaborate with stakeholders, work closely with teams, vendors, and clients to understand their needs and constraints. They can choose flexible resource allocation and prepared to adjust resource allocation as event requirements change and they can monitor and make adjustments continuously and at the same time monitor resource usage and adjust allocation as needed to ensure optimal resource leveling.

  15. Team 7,cohort 16.
It would not be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach at the Glasgow event because of the following reasons:
1: Time management – resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.
2: Bad reputation – apply resource leveling which in turn emphasizes rescheduling will give a bad reputation to the Glasgow event which is internationally recognized.
3: Negative Impact – resource leveling at such a big and scheduled event will have a negative impact on both the client and the stakeholders.
Moreover it can only be feasible if the Glasgow event schedule is flexible(float), thereby having a very high satisfiable quality project because of rescheduling.

Resource Smoothing: This is used when time constraints are the biggest factor blocking production. The idea is to finish a project on time while avoiding peaks and dips in resource demand.
    1. Objective: The primary goal of resource smoothing is to adjust the activities within their float or slack without affecting the project’s critical path.
    2. Focus: It focuses on resolving resource over-allocations during specific periods by redistributing the workload.
    3. Method: Resources are adjusted within the available float or slack, meaning activities can be scheduled earlier or later within their allowable time frames without impacting the project’s overall duration.
    4. Result: The project schedule remains unchanged in terms of critical path activities but ensures that resource utilization is spread evenly over time.
    while
Resource Leveling: This is used when scheduling the production of available resources is limited and needs to be used optimally.
    1. Objective: Resource leveling aims to resolve resource over-allocations that affect the project’s critical path.
    2. Focus: It addresses situations where resource constraints directly impact the project’s schedule by delaying critical activities.
    3. Method: Activities are rescheduled within their total float or slack to eliminate over-allocations that affect critical path activities. This may involve delaying non-critical activities to resolve resource conflicts on critical path tasks.
    4. Result: The project schedule may be adjusted in terms of start and finish dates to ensure that critical path activities are not delayed due to resource constraints.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RESOURCE SMOOTHING AND RESOURCE LEVELLING?

Resource smoothing is used when the time constraint takes priority. The objective is to complete the work by the required date while avoiding peaks and troughs of resource demand. Resource levelling is used when limits on the availability of resources are paramount.
    FOR RESOURCE SMOOTHING
    1. Time limited scheduling technique: importance is given to duration of the project
    2. Removes as much resource conflicts as possible; but, may not remove all resource conflicts
    3. May require additional resources to address left over resource conflicts
    4. Activities are shifted only to the extent of the float available
    5. The project duration remains the same
    6. No change the critical path

    FOR RESOURCE LEVELLING
    1. Resource limited scheduling technique: importance is given to limited resource
    2. Remove all resource conflicts
    3. May require additional resources
    4. Activities may be shifted beyond the float available while rescheduling the activities
    5. Generally the project duration gets extended
    6. May change the critical path

For MTD water installation, a resource levelling approach is feasible because MTD aims at producing a good quality and adequate water supply therefore rescheduling to prevent any negative occurrence like bad water supply, insufficient water supply to appropriate channels is important to ensure safe and good quality of product even though it may have impact on the project deadline.

  19. Yes, application of a resource levelling approach is very possible and sometimes can be the only optimal option in mitigating the damage, unplanned problems and issues can cause in the execution of a water installation to any sort of event.
    Scenarios like
    1. Bad water supply, lack of sufficient information by the sponsor e.g. water volume, space, no of people, toilets to supply.
    2. Insufficient water tankers to supply water
    3. Insufficient knowledge of the layout of the event.
    4. Insufficient time to inspect the project layout, functionality of machines or valves.
    5. Insufficient equipment or machines to cater for the entire project.
    6. Delay in sponsors trying to get the standard equipments to be used for installation.
All these can affect the successful execution of a project, thats why resource levelling to serve as a backchannel to the project to correct flaws and errors keeping in mind the impact on the project deadline. Better to be safe than sorry.

  20. Resource levelling could work for the Glasgow event project. By rescheduling activities, we can balance resource workload without adding new resources. This might require some schedule adjustments, but it could prevent resource overload and ensure a smoother delivery.

  21. For MTD, resource smoothing works as it helps them meet their deadlines, it allows MTD to maintain original project deadlines even though project costs will increase, with these stakeholders and investor will not be lost.

In this situation, resource leveling is the best option to address MTD because the project’s cost is being impacted by the deadline. When dealing with the Glasgow event, which has a specific start and end date, it is best to use resource smoothing to ensure the deadline is met.

  23. from my own perspective, adopting resource smoothing is better inorder to meet up with the deadline

  24. Resource levelling its not advisable as an option to use by MTD in the case of Glasgow event which its an event that has a set time for starting. Resource levelling seeks to use same available resource by not altering the resource capacity rather emphasizes on rescheduling which will result in extending the project completion time. Rather resources smoothing its better for MTD for the Glasgow event.

  25. Resources leveling would not be the best option for MTD, judging by the fact that the deadline will be impacted and the Glasgow event had a start date set. Resources leveling would not give enough room for the project to be delivered or completed.

Resource leveling is considered safer than resource smoothing for several reasons:

    1. Preserves project integrity: Resource leveling maintains the original project scope, timeline, and resources, ensuring that the project’s integrity is preserved.
    2. No shortcuts: Unlike resource smoothing, leveling doesn’t involve taking shortcuts or compromising on quality to meet deadlines, reducing the risk of errors and omissions.
    3. Even workload distribution: Leveling distributes workload evenly, avoiding overloading and understaffing, which can lead to burnout, mistakes, and accidents.
    4. Reduced stress: By avoiding last-minute rushes and crunch times, resource leveling reduces stress on workers, minimizing the likelihood of mistakes and accidents.
    5. Improved safety: By maintaining a steady and controlled workflow, leveling prioritizes safety and reduces the risk of accidents and incidents on site.
    6. Better planning: Resource leveling encourages thorough planning, identifying potential resource constraints and mitigating risks proactively.
    7. Less scope for errors: By avoiding hasty decisions and shortcuts, leveling minimizes the scope for errors, ensuring a higher quality output. While resource smoothing prioritizes meeting deadlines, resource leveling prioritizes project integrity, safety, and quality, making it a safer approach.

While resource smoothing is a viable option in this case, it also has its drawbacks. By prioritizing timely completion, it may lead to shortcuts that compromise the project’s quality and integrity. This approach can put undue pressure on workers, resulting in hasty workmanship, and potentially sacrifice health and safety standards, increasing the risk of accidents and incidents on site. This could ultimately jeopardize the project’s deadline and overall success.”

  27. With the event looming, MTD and Glasgow face a time crunch that renders resource leveling impractical. The deadline is either too close or has already passed, making it challenging to allocate resources effectively. Furthermore, attempting to make do with inadequate resources may compromise the project’s quality.

  28. On a short note, I will say NO. Resource levelling will not be possible or will not be the best option to bank on in those projects. My reason is that the events of the water corporation or the Glasgow events are time bounds, they are projects that have a specific and demand quick delivery. The Glasgow event for example, in a situation where we need to incorporate one of the strategies, Resource levelling would be a bad choice because it would likely affect the deadlines which would render the project useless since it would not be used on the day of the event. Resource smoothing would certainly be the best option here, of course, it will affect the costs of the project but it maintains the due date.

  29. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may impact project deadlines.

For MTD, resource leveling is not feasible due to a tight deadline. The date for the sporting event is fixed and difficult to change. Altering the date or deadline may incur additional costs for the client, as significant planning has already been completed. Moreover, changing the date could negatively impact the client’s reputation and result in hidden costs, such as cancellations from customers and health agencies who have scheduled appointments for the fixed date.

Resource smoothing is a feasible option; however, it has its downsides. It may compromise the project’s integrity, as shortcuts may be taken to ensure the project is completed as planned. This approach could increase pressure and stress on the workers, leading to rushed work. Additionally, it might compromise the health and safety or construction phase plan, potentially leading to accidents and incidents on site, which could adversely affect the project’s deadline.

Resource Leveling involves adjusting start and finish dates based on resource availability to balance resource demand with supply. It is done when key resources are
    1. only available at certain times, in limited quantities, or are over-allocated.
    2. It is also used to keep resource usage constant and reduce fluctuations in demand for key resources.

Resource Smoothing adjusts the activities of a schedule model to ensure that the project’s resource requirements do not exceed specific predefined limits.

  31. As MTD and Glasgow prepare for an event, resource leveling won’t be effective due to the tight deadline, which may be too close or even past the event date. Additionally, utilizing available resources that are insufficient for the project can lead to compromising its quality.

  32. As MTD and Glasgow prepare for an event, resource leveling won’t be effective due to the tight deadline, which may be too close or even past the event date. Additionally, utilizing available resources that are insufficient for the project can lead to compromising its quality.

  33. Considering that the MTD water project for instance has a direct impact on lives, resource smoothing will be a better approach. Deadlines can be extended on any other project such as road constructions, housing etc. Their impact might be minimal due to the availability of alternatives

A project such as the MTD water project in all it’s aspects has a direct bearing with dire consequences when the deadline is tampered.

Also, the MTD project involves water laboratory analysis. Any alteration or delay in the deadline can adversely affect water quality.

  34. MTD works better with resource smoothing since they have to meet up with deadlines and cannot compromise quality

  35. MTD major goal is to meet deadlines with solid quality , so in this case Resource smoothing is a better option for MTD, while Resource leveling will not work for MTD.

  36. Example Scenario
Current Situation: You have a project with a fixed deadline, but resources are over-allocated in the middle of the project.
Approach: Identify non-critical tasks that can be postponed. Use project management software to adjust the schedule automatically, ensuring that no resources are overburdened at any given time.
Outcome: The project might take longer to complete, but resource over-allocation is avoided, reducing the risk of burnout and ensuring quality work.
If you provide more details about your specific scenario, I can offer a more tailored approach to implementing resource leveling.

  37. MTD is a company that is concerned with meeting deadlines. Applying resource levelling will affect the deadline causing a delay in meeting deadline which is not good for them. I think resource smoothing will work best for MTD even though it is time limited. It would only cause them to work overtime.
Glasgow event can go with resource levelling since they can easily change the deadline. It would enable them to get a new date and deliver.

  38. Seeing as MTD and Glasgow work towards an event Resource levelling would not work because the new deadline might be too close to the event or past the event. Also working what they have (using available resources) when its too low for the project can lead to compromising quality.

  39. I don’t think it would be feasible to implement a Resource levelling approach for MTD as their aims to maintain original project deadlines. So I believe Resource smoothing is a suitable option for MTD.

  40. Thinking about the MTD water project and Glasgow event requires separate approach
The MTD water project requires timing and good planning techniques. Applying resource leveling approach will not be a good idea as the project end date will not be feasible, rather resource smoothing will help to achieve the goal and timing faster.
For Glasgow event it’s major problem was resources (water limitation) during the ongoing event, resource leveling can be applied, the project manager is in charge of optimizing the provided limited resources. The schedule isn’t fixed and so the resource leveling helps to figure out the end date of the project with the available resources.

  41. Resource levelling will not work for MTD as their major goal is to meet deadlines with solid quality. In this case Resource smoothing is a better option for MTD.

  42. From Joseph Ikechukwu Onyeocha:
Applying a resource leveling approach to MTD, the water installation events company, and their Glasgow event involves smoothing out resource demand over time to avoid peaks and troughs, thus optimizing resource utilization and potentially reducing costs. This approach typically balances the workload of resources like labor, equipment, and materials to match the available capacity.

In the context of the Glasgow event, which involves complex water installations, resource leveling could be challenging yet beneficial. Here’s how it might apply:

    1. Resource Utilization: MTD could analyze the resource requirements for each phase of the event (e.g., planning, setup, execution) and spread out resource usage evenly. This prevents overloading certain resources at specific times, reducing stress and potential burnout among employees.

    2. Cost Management: Smoothing out resource demand can lead to cost savings. For instance, by avoiding last-minute rushes or idle periods, MTD can optimize the use of equipment and minimize overtime costs.

    3. Project Schedule: Resource leveling helps in creating a more predictable project schedule. This is crucial for MTD to meet deadlines and deliver installations on time, especially for high-profile events like the one in Glasgow.

    4. Constraints and Challenges: However, applying resource leveling in event management isn’t always straightforward. Factors like client demands, weather conditions, and unforeseen events can disrupt planned schedules. MTD would need flexibility and contingency plans to adapt to these changes without compromising the overall project.

    5. Technology and Tools: Utilizing project management software and tools that support resource leveling can enhance MTD’s ability to manage resources efficiently. These tools can provide real-time visibility into resource allocation and help in making informed decisions.

In conclusion, while resource leveling offers clear benefits in terms of resource optimization and cost management for MTD’s event in Glasgow, it requires careful planning, flexibility, and the right tools to navigate potential challenges effectively. It’s a strategic approach that can contribute to the success of complex water installation events by ensuring resources are used efficiently throughout the project lifecycle.

Considering the MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow and the provided figure, Resource Smoothing. This aims to maintain original project deadlines even though project costs will increase.
The Resource Leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines, it is better not to use or apply here. This will lead to customer dissatisfaction and loosing of stakeholders and projects as well.

  44. Using resource leveling for the MTD project won’t be feasible as it’s operating within a fixed deadline, instead resource smoothing is best advised

  45. Based on the figure above, Resource leveling, which prioritizes rescheduling, may lead to client dissatisfaction and potentially jeopardize the success of planned outcomes. Additionally, this could result in missed opportunities for future collaborations with the company.

  46. Resource smoothing is best in this Glasgow and MTD events. There is a fixed date and using resource levelling won’t be right

In the MTD and Glasgow event, there’s a date for the program and resource levelling will not be the best at it could affect project deadline and in turn affect client and customer relationship.
Resource smoothing is better as it meets the planned deadline but only increasing project costs.
This should be discussed with the clients to know which fits the client.

  48. My name is Charles Ntanta. Yes i will prefer to apply Resource Levelling to maintain the time line for the projects. Issues like non critical activity can be delayed and extended too in so far, it will not increase the cost of the project and . If i try to smoothing, not only will it increase cost, it will equally affect getting subsequent projects in future.

  49. Their contract was signed for an event scheduled for a specific date. This date cannot be postponed.
Which means that, as far as I’m concerned, it’s only the resource smoothing that will be applied here. The cost could go up, but the priority is really to do everything possible to meet the deadline without any loss of quality in the service to be provided.

  50. MTD specializes in water installation events, and the Glasgow event is likely a complex, time-sensitive project with specific milestones. Such events often require various skilled resources, including:

    • Planners and coordinators.
    • Installation technicians.
    • Support staff for logistics and customer service.

    Feasibility of Resource Leveling

    1. Resource Availability and Demand:
    • Availability: If MTD has a limited pool of technicians or equipment, leveling could help distribute their work more evenly.
    • Demand: Events like the one in Glasgow might have peak times (e.g., setup days, main event days) where resource demands are high. Leveling could help mitigate this by redistributing tasks.
    2. Task Flexibility:
    • Certain tasks might be flexible in their timing (e.g., preliminary site surveys, initial setups), allowing for leveling.
    • Critical tasks with fixed deadlines (e.g., final installations, live event support) are less flexible, posing a challenge to leveling.
    3. Project Timeline:
    • If the project timeline has some buffer, leveling could be more easily implemented. However, if the event is tightly scheduled, leveling could delay critical tasks.
    • Incorporating buffer periods in non-critical times could provide opportunities for leveling.
    4. Resource Skills and Dependencies:
    • If resources are highly specialized, reassigning tasks could be difficult. Cross-training staff might be a strategy to increase flexibility.
    • Dependencies between tasks need to be carefully managed to avoid creating bottlenecks.

    Practical Application for MTD

Given the above considerations, applying a resource leveling approach to MTD and the Glasgow event could be feasible under the following conditions:

    • Pre-Event Planning: Identify tasks that can be moved or adjusted without impacting critical paths. Early planning is crucial to find these opportunities.
    • Flexible Workforce: Cross-training employees or hiring temporary staff during peak times could help balance the workload.
    • Advanced Scheduling Tools: Use project management software to visualize resource allocation and identify leveling opportunities.
    • Communication: Ensure clear communication with all stakeholders about the potential adjustments to timelines and tasks.

    Conclusion

While there are challenges, resource leveling could be beneficial for MTD to optimize resource use and prevent overloading staff during peak periods of the Glasgow event. Careful planning, flexibility in task scheduling, and effective use of project management tools will be key to successfully implementing this approach.

  51. MTD project in Glasgow is for an event that already has a deadline, and for any event to be successful it is expected that all things be in place before the start date of the event . If the project must undergo any adjustments or reevaluation it should be done using the Resource smoothing this will maintain the project deadline despite the increase in cost, but at least the event will begin as the staplated time while maintaining the quality.

  52. MTD And Glasgow project it will be feasible to implement an approach Resource leveling approach my answer is a Yes. Resource leveling may require changing task sequences or extending project deadline. Though it might increase cost due to extension of the project and enable the PM to complete project at deadline

  53. For MTD, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

  54. For the MTD and Glasgow project, it is not really applicable to use the resource leveling approach as it involves rescheduling tasks and can be more disruptive to the project schedule. Resource leveling may require changing task sequences or extending project deadline.
It is note worthy to say that resource smoothing is preferable as when external constraints or urgent situations arise, while resource leveling is more suitable when there is flexibility in project deadlines and resource adjustments can be made through rescheduling.
For this MTD scenario, the event has a deadline there, resource smoothing is more suitable,

  55. In the case of MTD and Glasgow, since it is unlikely to reschedule the events, the preferred strategy will be resource smoothing though it will mean increasing project cost.

  56. As regards MTD and the Glasgow event, since they are time based events, I’ll recommend the resource smoothing technique. Even though this may put a strain on the project budget as additional resources may be required, it’ll ensure the provision of quality output within stipulated timelines.

  57. Resource smoothing will enable the project manager to keep track with his time schedule for project completion

  58. Resource smoothing will be a better idea because it will ensure the project is done within the timeline

  59. I will recommend resource smoothing as it help them increase the capacity needed to complete the project on deadline.

  60. I think it would be challenging to apply a resource leveling approach in this context.

Just as we were taught in class that resource leveling is a technique used in project management to smoothen out resource usage over time, and this helps in ensuring that resources are allocated evenly throughout the project. However, in the context of an event like the Glasgow festival, the resources required (such as stages, sound systems, and personnel) are likely to be highly variable and dependent on that specific event and activities that will be taking place each day.

Given the dynamic nature of the schedule of the festival with different events and activities happening at the same time, it might be difficult to apply resource leveling effectively. Instead, MTD might focus on resource smoothing, which involves the allocation of resources to ensure that they are used efficiently, even if it means some of these resources are overallocated or under allocated at certain times.

  61. Considering MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event as regards which better salvage the situation, either resource leveling or resource smoothing. In my opinion, resource leveling fits the Gasglow event better as it is a program-based event but resource smoothing fits the MTD installation, as chances are that time extension might be the best decision to attain an output quality.

Most importantly, however, looking at a more significant level of impact, certain projects undergo more than just rescheduling or resource allocation adjustments. They may undergo a reevaluation of their project scope by the project sponsor

    Mary Ayo

  62. Due to the fact that MTD projects are tied to various events and in turn many varying stakeholders, resource leveling might not be the best approach as, there’s the challenge of maintaining, the project scope with the events date. Resource smoothing, appears to be a better approach, although it will incur extra project costs but the project timeline will be maintained.

  63. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs while

Resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadlines. In the light of this, resource smoothing is recommended because it aims at increasing the cost of projects, adding new resources, and meeting up with the stipulated time, and deadline without having to extend it.

  64. Resource soothing is the most favorable approach, it aims at the original project work because it is good for a time-based project.

  65. Resource smoothing aims to the original project work while resource level doesn’t aim at it , the best method to use is resource smoothing through MTD

  66. For me I would explain what resource smoothing and resource leveling as project management techniques. However I will recommend:
    * They conduct an evaluation of their resources, stakeholders willingness to provide additional funding, stakeholders reception of deadline extension viz-a-viz cost implications, cost of additional manpower or the stress of overtime of it’s staff etc
    * The outcome of the evaluation will decide which project management technique to adopt.

  67. For company MTD the best approach I would advice is resource smoothing because its good for a time based project like MTD project.

  68. Resource smoothing and resource leveling are distinct project management techniques for handling resource constraints. Resource smoothing aims to adjust activities to maintain constant resource usage without extending project duration, potentially increasing costs. In contrast, resource leveling balances resource demand with availability, often extending project timelines without altering resource capacity.

For MTD’s Glasgow event, implementing resource leveling might be feasible if resource overallocation is a concern and deadlines are flexible. It offers a balanced resource allocation, potentially avoiding overutilization. However, it may lead to delays. If maintaining the original schedule is crucial, resource smoothing, despite higher costs, might be more suitable to ensure timely completion.

Choosing the right approach depends on the project’s specific needs, resource availability, and stakeholder expectations. For MTD, evaluating the importance of deadlines versus resource balance will guide the decision between resource smoothing and resource leveling.

  69. Resource levelling technique aims to optimize resource utilization and ensure a more balanced workload across projects.

    Using the resource levelling approach will lead to;

    • Minimized conflicts and delays.
    • Leads to a smoother operation
    • Reduces bottlenecks
    • Reduced risk of project overrun

In some situations however it may not be feasible to level resources if there are specific requirements for the project with regards to specific timelines.

  70. i think Resource smoothing will be more appropriate in the case of MTD, however since it comes with an extra cost, parties must be notified and the reasons for more resource allocation be stated in a proper communication channel.

  71. In the case of MTD and Glasgow projects. Resource smoothing is better here because of events that have been fixed and cannot be altered. The stakeholders needs to come together on how cost can be increased so their clients won’t be disappointed.

  72. While Resource Smoothing appears to be a better option in order to keep to deadlines, it is important to have a round table discussion with all stakeholders regarding the cost implication of this, so that all parties are aligned.

Where the parties concerned are willing to bear costs, the projects proceeds smoothly. Where this is not the case, then, practically a degree of Resource Leveling maybe introduced after critical assessment has be done to determine what aspects of Resource Leveling can be applied.

  73. Regarding the MTD and Glasgow situation, employing the resource leveling method isn’t practical. This approach entails task rescheduling, which could significantly disrupt the project schedule by altering task sequences or prolonging the project duration. It’s worth mentioning that resource smoothing is favored for addressing external constraints or urgent scenarios, whereas resource leveling is more appropriate when project deadlines are flexible, and resource adjustments can be accommodated through rescheduling.

  74. In the case of MTD and Glasgow projects, resource smoothing is better as their clients have fixed dates for the events. Resource smoothing will increase the cost of the project but maintain the end date of the project. This is highly important to the clients. Resource levelling though helps to maintain cost,is not suitable for projects with fixed timelines which cannot be exceeded.

  75. For the MTD and Glasglow scenario, it is not feasible to use the resource leveling approach because it involves rescheduling tasks and can be more disruptive to the project schedule because it may require changing task sequences or extending project duration.
It is important to note that resource smoothing is preferable when external constraints or urgent situations arise, while resource leveling is more suitable when there is flexibility in project deadlines and resource adjustments can be made through rescheduling.

  76. “If there are no deadlines to meet, The combination of the two approaches is not bad for the MMT project, because aside from resources other factors like weather conditions and logistic accessibility can delay a project. Resources smoothing can be used for constructing tasks, while resources level can be used for tasks that are sensitive to weather changes.

  77. I believe the MTD project would benefit more from project smoothing and not leveling. If a event is fast approaching and with rescheduling, one will not meet up . Although project smoothing might seem expensive, but in the end customers will be satisfied.

  78. I think resource smoothing is best for this kind of project.
I also think it is not feasible to use the resource leveling approach because it involves reassigning tasks and this can be more disruptive to the project assignment because it may require changing task sequences or extending project duration. The event has been planned for a long time with other resources so the delivery date can not be rescheduled

  79. Left to me, I feel resource levelling is not good for the MTD project because the event has been planned for a long time with other resources so the delivery date can not be rescheduled so the best option to go for us the resource smoothing.

it is not also feasible to use the resource leveling approach because it involves reassigning tasks and this can be more disruptive to the project assignment because it may require changing task sequences or extending project duration.

So I think resource smoothing is best for this kind of project.

  80. For the MTD and Glasglow scenario, it is not feasible to use the resource leveling approach because it involves rescheduling tasks and can be more disruptive to the project schedule because it may require changing task sequences or extending project duration.
So i strongly believe that resource smoothing is the best approach for the MTD and Glasglow projects

  81. My little understanding about resource leveling and resource smoothing
Resource leveling adjusts the project schedule to match resource availability, potentially extending the timeline, it is used when there are limited resources and the project timeline can be adjusted,
Resource smoothing works within the existing timeline and redistributes tasks to prevent overloading, it2 is used when the project deadline is fixed and resources need to be optimized within that timeline
for the case of MTD and Glasgow, resource smoothing is advisable. Resource smoothing would be more appropriate in cases where an error was discovered a few days prior to the event. Reducing interruptions and making sure the event goes according to schedule should be the main priorities. Resource levelling at this stage could impede the project and harm the standing of the company. Water is urgently needed for the first group of participants, and a major postponement could negatively affect the event’s outcome. Little changes can be made thanks to resource smoothing without impacting the project’s schedule.

  82. My thoughts on the concepts of resource smoothing and resource levelling in project management.

    1. Resource Smoothing:
Resource smoothing is a technique used to adjust resource usage within a project while keeping the project schedule unchanged.
    – The primary goal of resource smoothing is to minimize fluctuations in resource utilization, especially when dealing with limited resources.
    – In resource smoothing, the focus is on managing resource peaks and valleys to achieve a more consistent resource allocation.
    – It allows for small adjustments to resource assignments without affecting project deadlines.
    – Resource smoothing is particularly useful when there are external constraints (such as contractual obligations or fixed deadlines) that prevent rescheduling.
    – However, it may result in additional costs due to overtime or other resource adjustments.

    2. Resource Leveling:
    – Resource levelling, on the other hand, involves rescheduling tasks within a project to **balance resource demand.
    – The primary goal of resource levelling is to avoid resource overloads by shifting tasks or changing their timing.
    – In resource levelling, the focus is on achieving an even distribution of resource usage over time.
    – It may involve delaying non-critical tasks or rearranging dependencies to accommodate resource availability.
    – Resource levelling can be more disruptive to the project schedule because it may require changing task sequences or extending project duration.
    – It is suitable when project deadlines are flexible and when resource constraints can be managed through rescheduling.

    3. Application to MTD and Glasgow Cases:
    – For the MTD case, where an error was identified a few days before the event, resource smoothing would be more appropriate. The focus should be on minimizing disruptions and ensuring that the event proceeds as planned. Implementing resource levelling at this point could hinder the project and damage the organization’s reputation.
    – Similarly, for the Glasgow case, resource smoothing is advisable. The need for water for the first set of participants is urgent, and any significant rescheduling could impact the event’s success. Resource smoothing allows for minor adjustments without affecting the project timeline.

It is important to note that resource smoothing is preferable when external constraints or urgent situations arise, while resource levelling is more suitable when there is flexibility in project deadlines and resource adjustments can be made through rescheduling.

  83. To me, resource levelling isn’t suitable for the MTD project because the event have been planned for a long time with other resources so the delivery date can’t be rescheduled because of maybe 10% of the whole plan so the best option to go for us the resource smoothing.

  84. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving deadlines and end dates while increasing projects costs and adding new resources to the project. Resource leveling however, focuses on balancing the workload on resources in order to align the usage of the resources with their available capacity which mostly results to the change or rescheduling of end date.

With what we have learnt so far, I would agree and say it is feasible to implement a resource leveling approach. In this scenario.
Resource leveling will help the project manager enough time to stabilize the work load and reduce the risk of stress on the workers.
The end date can be rescheduled as long as it is communicated effectively with the shareholders and clients and agreed upon so as to still meet client satisfaction and quality requirements.

  85. Resource smoothing prevents rescheduling and helps meet deadlines, although it might incur extra costs. On the other hand, resource leveling promotes rescheduling while maintaining the existing capacity.

Implementing the resource leveling approach for the cases of MTD and Glasgow is not advisable. The resource smoothing approach is more suitable, particularly for MTD. They identified an error a few days before the event, with the first set of participants expected soon and needing water. Using resource leveling at this point would hinder the project and could damage their reputation.

  86. I do not think it would be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario? The reason being that the approach entails doing the best with the resources available but the project end date slips and you have a new project end date. The Glasgow event is a fixed event scheduled already to take place at a particular days of the month and year. The organizers of the Glasgow event and MTD does not have the luxury of time hence the water infrastructure must be completed within the projected time frame so as to be ready on time for the event.
Already in some of the videos watched, the project manager talked of instances where contingency measures had to be embraced just to make sure MTD delivers within project time frame.
Consequently, resource smoothing which allows for engagement of extra resources even though at an extra cost in order to maintain and keep to the projected timeline of delivery is a better option in this situation.

  87. From I have learnt so far, I think that the MTD project would benefit more from project smoothing and not leveling. It there’s an event that was fast approaching and with rescheduling, deadline will be missed. Though project smoothing would lead to more cost, but in the end there will be customers satisfaction.

  88. In MTDs case resource smoothing is the best i will suggest as thus allow for meeting dead lines and given expected timely at the expense of additional cost with events tend to be time bound.

  89. Resource smoothing prevents rescheduling and also helps meeting deadlines although, this might attracts extra cost while resource leveling promotes rescheduling while all other existing capacity remains the same .

In the case of MTD and Glasgow, I will suggest resource smoothing because the date of the event would have been announced and every effort to meet up with the deadline will be adopted. Yes, it attracts extra cost and I feel this can be discussed between both companies and resolved.

  90. I will like to approach this discussion these points Resource Smoothing is were a new member is added to join the team.
    NB:
    1) It will definitely increase the over head cost of the project.
    2) There will be need for training and time to bring the new member up to speed on current position of the project to be able to meet the dead line of the project..
While for Resource Leveling, the team member might be greatly affected.
    1) it also affects cost as over time hours means extra cost on the initial budget.
    2) Members will stressed working extra hours
    3) This will affect quality as a result of much fatigue.
Finally Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

  91. Following the lesson so far, I think resource smoothing is preferable more than resource leveling. Although project cost might/will increase in resource smoothing but a better results will be gotten out of a project instead of rescheduling projects that can have a possible impact on project deadlines and project results too

  92. In my opinion I believe resource leveling approach is not the best option but resource smoothing approach in the case of MTD because time management is key in project management.

  93. For MTD and GLASSGOW companies, I would not advise the resource levelling approach, rather I would advise that resource smoothing (adding new resources to the project) approach should be used without minding the extra costs.

    Cohort 15 team 10.

For me, I will go for project smoothing, because it will foster fast completion of the project.

  95. I think it would be feasible to implement the resource levelling approach, especially if the two companies are not willing to change the current capacity and are willing to extend the deadline so that the current capacity would work to deliver what they have been tasked to deliver.

But with rescheduling that comes with the resource levelling approach is something the two companies should be aware of as this might have an impact on the project cost eventually.

  96. Resource smoothing and resource leveling are both project management techniques used to manage resource allocation and avoid resource overloading. However, they differ in their approach and objectives:

    Resource Smoothing:

Resource smoothing aims to adjust the resource allocation within the existing project schedule to eliminate peaks and troughs in resource utilization while keeping the project duration constant.
The focus is on minimizing fluctuations in resource usage over time, particularly for resources with limited availability or capacity.
This technique involves shifting non-critical activities within their float or slack time to balance resource demand, ensuring that resource usage remains within predefined limits.
The primary goal is to optimize resource utilization without extending the project’s duration.
    Resource Leveling:

Resource leveling involves adjusting the project schedule to allocate resources in a way that ensures a consistent workload over time while maintaining project constraints such as dependencies and deadlines.
The objective is to eliminate resource overloading by rescheduling activities within their slack or float time to avoid conflicts in resource availability.
Resource leveling considers both resource constraints and project constraints to create a feasible and balanced schedule.
Unlike resource smoothing, resource leveling may extend the project duration if necessary to resolve resource conflicts and maintain a sustainable workload.

  97. Time management and quality are crucial in project management, I would not advise using the resource levelling approach as d major issue of the project is a scarcity of resources.

  98. Umeanolue Lilian

For the MTD and Glasgow event, I recommend the smoothing approach as the best option as this would enable both projects to finish at the stipulated time set out for it.

  99. In my opinion, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines but does not increase costs or resource capacity of the project, which may resulting in significant deviations from the original plans.

  100. The right choice between resource leveling and resource smoothing depends on what the project needs, what limits or rules it has to follow, and what the organization thinks is most important for managing resources and planning the project.
But, considering MTD and the Glasgow event.
I believe resource smoothing is better because it will help them make sure resources are used evenly without getting overloaded at certain times, even if it means not spreading them out evenly throughout the whole project.

  101. Suppose MTD suddenly finds out they need more resources or that some plans have to change. That’s like trying to finish a puzzle only to find out some pieces don’t fit right! But instead of giving up, they think about how they can rearrange everything so it still looks awesome in the end.

They know that to make things work smoothly, they have to balance their time, costs, and quality of work. It’s like trying to juggle school, hobbies, and chores without dropping anything!

MTD looks at what they have—like equipment, people, and materials. They ask, “Can we move things around a bit to make it all fit together better?”

They also have to follow some rules, like finishing on time and not spending too much money. It’s a bit like trying to bake cookies perfectly following a recipe, making sure they’re delicious but not burning them!

MTD talks with everyone involved, from sponsors to team members, to make sure they’re all on the same page. It’s like planning a big family trip; everyone needs to agree on where they’re going and how they’ll get there.

They sit down and figure out exactly what needs to change and how they can manage their resources better. It’s like making a new game plan for a sports match to make sure they score the winning goal!

They also think about what could go wrong, like delays or unexpected costs, and have plans to handle those surprises. It’s a bit like having an umbrella ready for a sudden rainstorm!

So, yes, MTD can use a resource leveling approach, but they have to think about everything carefully, work together, and be ready for anything that might pop up along the way. With good planning and teamwork, they can still make the Glasgow event fantastic, even if the puzzle pieces need a bit of rearranging!

  102. For Resource smoothing or Levelling these decision will be subject to the Project Plan.
i will subscribed to Smoothing in a situation where a project as reach completion date.

  103. I am inclined to think that the best approach for the Glasgow and MTD events is smoothing.

Both projects set their deadlines, which were decided and announced. This underscores the purpose of the project.

  104. Resource smoothing and resource leveling are both strategies used in project management to manage resource allocation effectively, but they have different goals and methods. Resource smoothing aims to ensure that resource usage stays within predefined limits over time by adjusting the timing of activities while keeping the total resource demand constant. On the other hand, resource leveling focuses on balancing the demand for resources with their availability by adjusting the start and finish dates of activities to prevent resource overloads or conflicts. In essence, resource smoothing fine-tunes resource utilization over time, while resource leveling ensures a steady balance between resource demand and availability throughout the project duration.

  105. In my opinion, the MTD and Glasgow event should employ the resource smoothing approach since the event date and time may have been decided on and also announced.

  106. For the MTD and Glasgow event I feel the smoothing approach is the best way to Go as this would enable both projects to meet deadline which is the purpose of project management.

    Reply

  107. For the MTD and Glasgow event, I recommend the smoothing approach as the best option as this would enable both projects to finish at the stipulated time set out for it.

    1. Most events usually have a set time which can rarely be changed or altered as this will result to a lot of issues, For MTD and Glasgow event I don’t think the resource levelling approach will be feasible as this will result in the project not meeting the set deadline and in turn affect the time of the Event. A better solution to the issue of resource overloading in this case will be resource smoothing, with this the event will be held at the set time but the project cost will increase.

  108. Let consider the decision on MTD,resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs, Resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling with a possible impact on project deadlines

  109. There is already an issue of time constraint on the project. Considering the option of resource levelling will delay the start time of the project and will distrupt a lot concerning the event. It is better that MTD spends more and preserve the deadline. Therefore, it is better that MTD considers resource smoothing

  110. Considering the decision of MTD as touching the Glass glow event. I will suggest the resource smoothing idea , reason been that the glass glow event has already been fixed and the time for change seems not be feasible. Hence, the date needs to hold but project cost increases.

  111. For the MTD and Glasgow event. I suggest leveling, it’s does not change the current capacity but instead focuses on rescheduling, with a possible impact on a project deadlines and also, Unlike Smoothing that focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increases more additional cost. But it’s constraint is resources.

  112. For the MTD and Glasgow event I don’t think the leveling approach would be the best way to go, I feel the smoothing approach is the best way to Go as this would enable both projects to finished at the stipulated time

  113. Considering MTD water installation events company and the glasgow event, applying a resource levelling approach might be challenging due to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of events. Resource levelling assumes a stable and predictable resource demand which might not be the case in events with variable crowd sizes, technical issues and last-minute changes.
Resource levelling would require careful planning, monitoring and adjustments to ensure its effectiveness in the dynamic event environment.

    1. Resource smoothing is best for the Glasgow and MTD, as keeping to the stipulated time, is a measure to calculate project success in stakeholders view, and any time further buffering might be considered a fail or no satisfaction.

  114. Each project comes with its difficulties and issues.

In this case, it is good to follow the most sufficient way to deliver on the targeted end date.

By evaluating the type of project before deciding on going with a smoothing or a levelling approach.

The MTD considers negotiating with its customers, so if it demands taking such a step depending on the approach the project falls on.

If the project demands an additional cost to get the necessary things done and deliver at the end date, then it’s fine.
If there’s a need for levelling and still getting the project done before the end date, it’s also fine.

  115. In order to optimize resource utilization, minimize idle time and overallocation, and address resource conflicts and bottlenecks, the resource leveling approach would be beneficial for both the MTD project and the Glasgow event. Implementing this approach would enable project managers to create a more feasible and realistic schedule without incurring additional costs.

  116. I think because the event is time based, the best approach to adopt is resource smoothing, which entails incurring extra costs just to ensure that the event runs smoothly without having to be postponed.

  117. In my opinion resource smoothing would be more preferable for Glasgow and MTD because it’s helps them to retain their schedule even if the cost or price is higher, and it also allow them to keep to time

  118. Given the difficulties of rescheduling the events and the high expense of doing so, resource leveling may not be possible in this situation. This is mostly because advertisements for the event, tickets, and invitations have already been made and sent out. Because resource smoothing makes it possible to finish the task by the deadline or perhaps even ahead of schedule, it becomes a more sensible option.

  119. Resource smoothing won’t work for the Glasgow project and MTD. MTD typically organizes for events that have a set date to complete. They are better off with resource smoothing.

  120. Implementing resource leveling approach in the cases of MTD and Glasgow won’t be the best idea. Resource smoothing approach will be the best approach to use especially in the case of MTD, where they noticed an error few days to the event, and the first set of participants were expected in a couple of days and they would need water. Using resource leveling at this point, will hinder the project and might end up spoiling their reputation.

  121. A resource levelling approach would not be appropriate in the circumstance due to the Glasgow factor (poor wood) as this may adversely impact on the quality of MTD’s work.

  122. For both the MTD project and the Glasgow event, I would consider the resource leveling approach. As it would ensure efficient utilization of resources, reducing idle time and overallocation. It will also help to identify and resolve resource conflicts and bottlenecks and enable the project managers to create a more realistic and achievable project schedule without increasing project costs.

  123. I would suggest resource smoothing because this will help them remain on schedule even though there might be an increase in cost. However this will help the company maintain the level of quality that was proposed at the beginning.

  124. A resource levelling approach in this case would have been detrimental to the project. The sporting event was not postponed and from the video the first set of participants were expected in a couple of days and these would need water. In my opinion resource levelling is not the way to go. MTD found a way to meet the deadline but incurred additional costs in the process which was discussed with sponsors.
I think in future if the sponsors have a similar project, MTD will be their go-to.

  125. Resource smoothing aims to redistribute resources without changing project deadlines, often leading to increased costs to maintain the original schedule.
Resource leveling adjusts project schedules to balance resource demand, potentially impacting deadlines but ensuring resource constraints are respected.
Both techniques are important for managing projects, with smoothing maintaining constraints and leveling prioritizing resource balance.

  126. Resource leveling is the best option for this project given the MTD project cost because it will preserve the initial projects, nevertheless, it will have an impact on the project timeline in contrast to resource smoothing, which can raise the projects’ cost capacity.

  127. Resources smoothing will be best to keep with timeline. I wouldn’t use resources levelling for MDT project. However is we start the planning early, we may consider resources levelling to minimise cost

  128. In my opinion, in executing a water installation project at MTD, I wouldn’t implement the resource levelling approach as this would impact the timeline and the cost of the project being worked upon.

  129. Considering the MTD events company and Glasgow event. It is feasible to implement a resource leveling approach because it helps to define the project scope including all tasks and activities required to complete it. It Identifies all the resources required to complete each task or activity within the project scope. Using resource leveling techniques would optimize resource utilization and avoid overallocation or underutilization of resources. This may involve adjusting task durations, rescheduling tasks, or reallocating resources to different tasks as needed.

  130. Considering the MTD events company and Glasgow event. I think It is feasible to implement a resource leveling approach because it helps to define the project scope including all tasks and activities required to complete it. It Identifies all the resources required to complete each task or activity within the project scope. Using resource leveling techniques would optimize resource utilization and avoid overallocation or underutilization of resources. This may involve adjusting task durations, rescheduling tasks, or reallocating resources to different tasks as needed.

  131. I think Resource Smoothing will be a more acceptable option for me because I always like to keep up with time and would try to avoid anything that will make me fall short of deadline…

  132. Considering MTD, the water installation company, and Glasgow event, resource leveling approach might be feasible because this will help optimize resource utilization, minimize project delays, and improve overall project efficiency by ensuring that resources are allocated in a balanced and efficient manner throughout the project lifecycle. By smoothing out resource peaks and valleys, resource leveling will help to mitigate risks associated with resource constraints and contributes to the successful delivery of their project on time and within budget.

  133. Considering MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, resource leveling approach could be feasible but would require careful planning.
This approach aims to manage resources available with a consideration of adjusting the project schedule to reduce the impact on project costs.

  134. Resource leveling may not be ideal for the MTD water installation event company scenario, and the Glasgow event as the event is already scheduled, and meeting up with timelines is pivotal to the project’s success as resource leveling may require extending the timeline and other activities that may affect meeting up with deadlines.

  135. In the scenario of MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, resource levelling could potentially be applied to manage resources effectively. Resource levelling involves adjusting the schedule of activities within a project to ensure that resources are allocated evenly and efficiently over time, without exceeding resource constraints. This approach aims to avoid peaks and valleys in resource utilization, leading to a smoother and more balanced workload distribution.

  136. Yes, it’s possible to apply a r. Resource leveling could help in managing resources more efficiently, smoothing out peaks and valleys in resource demand during the event preparations, thus ensuring a more balanced workload and optimized resource utilization.

  137. Considering MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, resource leveling approach could be feasible but would require careful planning.
This approach aims to manage resources available with a consideration of adjusting the project schedule to reduce the impact on project costs.
However, most event have a fixed deadline for the event to kickoff so carefully planning such rescheduling would be needed to avoid interfering with the event kick off. This could lead to unsatisfied clients and loss of follow up work opportunities.

  138. For the Glasgow event by MTD, a resource leveling approach could be beneficial based on the project’s circumstances.
This involves optimizing resource allocation to avoid overstaffing or understaffing throughout the project. Resource leveling prioritizes rescheduling tasks to stay within resource capacity, potentially impacting the project schedule. Careful planning is crucial for successful implementation.

  139. Using the scenario of MTD and the Glasgow event, it is feasible to apply a resource leveling even though there is the possibility of encountering challenges.

Resource leveling has to do with adjusting the project schedule to ensure that resource usage is distributed evenly over time, which can lead to prevention of resource overloads and delays. In the context of the Glasgow event, where MTD is involved in water installation, this approach could help in managing resources more effectively and ensuring that they are not overextended during peak periods.

However, events could have fixed deadlines and specific requirements, which could make it difficult to adjust schedules without impacting other aspects of the project. Additionally, the availability of certain resources, such as equipment or skilled labor, may be limited and not easily adjustable.

Therefore, while resource leveling could be considered for the Glasgow event, it would require careful planning and coordination to ensure that it does not adversely affect project timelines, quality, or stakeholder satisfaction.

  140. Implementing a resource leveling approach in a water installation events company like MTD can be feasible if there are significant fluctuations in resource demand over time.

Resource leveling aims to balance the allocation of resources such as manpower, equipment, and materials to avoid peaks and valleys in resource utilization, which can lead to inefficiencies and increased costs.

If MTD experiences fluctuations in demand for resources due to varying project schedules or seasonal trends, resource leveling could help optimize resource utilization and improve overall project efficiency.

  142. Applying resource levelling approach for a water installation event with MTD would be
because the Resource levelling technique aims to optimize resource utilization and ensure a more balanced workload across projects.

    Using the resource levelling approach will lead to;

    • Minimized conflicts and delays.
    • Leads to a smoother operation
    • Reduces bottlenecks
    • Reduced risk of project overrun

In some situations however it may not be feasible to level resources if there are specific requirements for the project with regards to specific timelines.

  143. Considering the scenario of MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, applying a resource leveling approach might be feasible but could encounter challenges.

Resource leveling involves adjusting the project schedule to ensure that resource usage is distributed evenly over time, which can help to prevent resource overloads and delays. In the context of the Glasgow event, where MTD is involved in water installation, this approach could help in managing resources more effectively and ensuring that they are not overextended during peak periods.

However, there are factors unique to event management projects like the Glasgow event that may complicate resource leveling. Events often have fixed deadlines and specific requirements, making it difficult to adjust schedules without impacting other aspects of the project.

  144. Considering the MTD project cost, resource leveling is the most suitable for this project because it will maintain the initial projects; however it will affect the project deadline compared to resource smoothing which can increase the cost capacity of the projects.

  145. Considering MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, implementing a resource leveling approach could be viable based on the project’s unique circumstances. Resource leveling entails balancing resource utilization across the project timeline to prevent uneven peaks and troughs in allocation.
Contrarily, resource leveling maintains the current resource capacity but prioritizes rescheduling tasks to prevent resource conflicts. Its objective is to ensure resource usage stays within available capacity limits. While effective in averting shortages and bottlenecks, this method could necessitate adjustments to the project schedule, possibly causing delays in project delivery.
Overall, while resource leveling could be feasible for the Glasgow event, it would require careful planning and consideration of various factors to ensure its successful implementation.

  146. MTD wouldn’t be able to use resource levelling as it directly impacts the time taken for quality eater to be delivered at the venue. Being a lobal event of that magnitude, the dates cannot be postponed. So, they can work on resource smoothing or modifying the scope of work to reduce the water quantity/or water points at the venue.

  147. Well , To me i don’t think a resource leveling approach will be a good option for these companies because they are companies that renders services to a event. So trying to postpone might not be a good thing for their profile buh i suggest they add more resources because it will be better

  148. I do not think a resource leveling approach will work because MTD is serving event programmes that are already fixed with set dates and publicity done on event dates. This will make it difficult to move deadline but instead resource smoothing becomes the only way out.

  149. One of the selling point of a PM is meeting deadlines. For a renowned company like MTD, it won’t speak well of such a reputable company to shift or change the delivery date. It could tarnish their reputation. Rather, resource smoothing approach is more appropriate.

  150. In my opinion, resource levelling will work perfectly. Considering there flexibility in the delivery time and rigidity of the project budget.

  151. MTD cannot implement the resource leveling approach because they deal with events and events have dates and timelines, and MTD cannot afford to make their clients uncomfortable or shift their time. So they will have to use resource smoothing approach to deliver within scope and on time.

  152. Certainly resource smoothing is the best for MTD as it was rightly done in the case of infected material, they had to use out of the standby buffer. The deadline must be met without compromise on quality.

  153. Certainly resource smoothing is the best for MTD as it was rightly done in the case of infected material, they had to use out of the standby buffer. The deadline must be met without compromise on quality.

  155. I think your approach should be based on the clients and stake holders expectations. For example if the clients would agree to a slight change in deadline then you can use the levelling approach? but if they insisted on the same deadline then you can use the resource smoothing approach but you can make them understand the situation involved in this particular approach which offcourse involves an extra cost.. so by so doing you keep the ball in their court to decide.

  156. In the context of MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event, resource leveling could potentially be applied to manage resources effectively. Resource leveling involves adjusting the schedule of activities within a project to ensure that resources are allocated evenly and efficiently over time, without exceeding resource constraints. This approach aims to avoid peaks and valleys in resource utilization, leading to a smoother and more balanced workload distribution.
For MTD, which is involved in organizing water installation events, resource leveling could help in optimizing the allocation of resources such as manpower, equipment, and materials throughout the various stages of event planning, preparation, and execution. By identifying resource bottlenecks and adjusting schedules accordingly, MTD can prevent overloading certain resources while others remain underutilized.
However, it’s essential to consider the specific circumstances and constraints of the Glasgow event as well as MTD’s overall project portfolio. Factors such as budget limitations, resource availability, project deadlines, and stakeholder expectations will influence the feasibility and effectiveness of resource-leveling. MTD would need to conduct a thorough analysis of its resources, project timelines, and priorities to determine the best approach for resource management, whether it involves resource leveling, resource smoothing, or a combination of both strategies.
Ultimately, the goal should be to optimize resource utilization, minimize disruptions, and ensure the successful execution of the Glasgow event while maintaining alignment with MTD’s overall business objectives and customer satisfaction.

  157. While resource levelling can be a valuable technique for optimizing resource utilization and balancing workload, its applicability in any project depends on various factors such as resource constraints, project duration, complexity, stakeholder expectations, and organizational practices.

  158. An exemplary illustration lies in the assessment of expansive infrastructure endeavors such as railway systems. These undertakings frequently encounter the need for rescaling owing to escalating costs, leading to substantial deviations from their initial blueprints. The ramifications of these alterations can extend to the client and a diverse array of stakeholders, potentially culminating in missed prospects for future engagements.

  159. MTD deals with events, which by nature, have strict timelines. Unlike construction projects for example where some flexibility might exist, delaying water delivery at an event can significantly disrupt the schedule and negatively impact the experience for organizers and attendees. Resource leveling often involves adjusting project timelines to optimize resource usage, and in MTD’s case, this could mean pushing back water delivery or setup, causing problems.

Certain events, like concerts or conferences, have specific timeframes for water needs. Resource leveling might lead to stretching out these critical periods, impacting things like stage availability or venue access for setting up water infrastructure. This could lead to logistical nightmares and potentially even safety hazards.

Timely water delivery is crucial for the smooth running of an event. Resource leveling could lead to delays in setting up or refilling water stations, creating inconveniences for attendees and potentially impacting sanitation or health aspects of the event.

  160. Considering the MTD project cost, resource leveling is the most suitable for this as it will maintain the initial projects but would only affects the the deadline formerly scheduled compared to resource smoothing which can increase the cost capacity of the projects, hence affect the selling and marketing cost.

  161. I think the first thing to look into before taking any consideration is the kind of project, the delicacy project. While resource smoothing may work very fine with some project, Resource levelling may not work on it.
In view of MTD, they had employed the use of Resource smoothing in one of the videos we watched , although the client covered the extra cost and the project had to go on as originally planned. While on the Glasglow incident, Resource smoothing is very much applicable as the situation was that of an emergency and the PM had to use those available to work on the Project.

  162. Considering MTD water company, it may be feasible to consider resource leveling , NOT altering the existing resource capacity but instead rescheduling deadlines within Maximum Floating, which will have impact on project deadlines but delivering quality water and not leading to later cost which may be encountered due to non conformance

for Glasgow event company on the other hand due to the fixed duration and fixed floating time, in my opinion it is only imperative to consider Resource Smoothing maintaining original project deadlines while increasing project costs. because in this case i believe the client will value speed and time conformity.

  163. Considering the reality that MTD may be a water company that handles occasions with settled date, Resource smoothing is appropriate which increments the extend taken a toll (This would be communicated to the extend sponsors)While guaranteeing the occasions hold as anticipated with any dissatisfaction.

  164. Considering the MTD water project, resource leveling is a better option to execute such project as it will not increase project cost but reschedule project time and will still have a perfect result while managing project cost, instead of resource smoothing which aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs.

What the customer wants is a perfect project even if it passes deadline.

  165. Considering the MTD water project, resource leveling is a better option to execute such project as it will not increase project cost but reschedule project time and will still have a perfect result while managing project cost, instead of resource smoothing which aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs.

  166. I wouldn’t suggest employing the Resource Levelling method for the MTD water installation events and the Glasgow event. These projects have strict deadlines, and rescheduling them could significantly raise project costs. Instead, opting for Resource Smoothing would be prudent. While it may increase the overall project cost, bringing in additional or more skilled team members, or extending working hours through overtime, would help meet the planned deadlines without compromising on quality.

  167. For the MTD water installation events and the Glasgow event, I will not recommend the Resource levelling approach, mainly because these projects’ deadlines are time sensitive and it would be a greater loss to have deadlines rescheduled but will advise they make use of resource smoothing either by adding new resources to hasten the project.

  168. While resource levelling can be a valuable technique for optimizing resource utilization and balancing workload, its applicability in any project depends on various factors such as resource constraints, project duration, complexity, stakeholder expectations, and organizational practices. While it may not be suitable for every project, resource levelling can be applied effectively in many projects where resources are limited or shared among multiple tasks, and where project timelines allow for adjustments to resource allocation.

Basing on the scenario of MTD water installation, It is possible to apply resources levelling as it workable and effective in many project because the activities a defined at it stage having the deadline in mind.

  169. Unexpected delays and other conflicts are a part of the real world and can crop up anytime without announcing their arrival. It can prevent such problems by adjusting the two most important variables: project deadlines and available resources. The correct strategy can help you optimize resources, extend deadlines, narrow the project scope, and garner more resources.

Employees worldwide believe a healthy work-life balance is the most important attribute of any job. Statistics show resources improve productivity by 21% when they have a good work-life balance.

Not exceeding the regular working hours by providing buffer days to employees, breaking up chunks of large tasks into smaller subtasks, and dividing them among team members will make the workload lighter and the team members more efficient. This process is called resource smoothing. Buffer days are evenly distributed across all days and are advantageous since they provide extra time for solving unexpected problems, effectively reducing stress and overtime.

Resource smoothing coupled with leveling promoted improved work-life balance as the team worked regular working hours with an equal daily workload.

Project managers often turn to resource leveling to ensure that the timelines for any project can be correctly predicted and conflicts arising out of time, scope, or insufficient resources can be tackled early on without snowballing into a huge problem, forcing employees to work overtime. Understanding what leveling resources is, its use, importance, and related information are vital to enhancing productivity and reducing burnout by eliminating over-allocation and minimizing the risk of resource burnout.

For the MTD water installation events and the Glasgow event, successful leveling is often achieved after some experience. Here are some tools you can use to help you expertly execute projects:

    1. Use Gantt charts.
    2. Leverage Project Management Software
    3. Draw network diagrams.
    4. Make realistic estimates of resource needs.

  170. For the MTD water installation events and the Glasgow event, I would not recommend using the Resource levelling approach, majorly because these projects’ deadlines are time sensitive and it would be a greater loss to have deadlines rescheduled-which could likely increase cost of the project also. Rather it would be advisable to implement Resource Smoothing here because though the total cost of the project would increase, the influx of extra or more experienced team members or the extra hours added as overtime for the team members would ensure that the project planned deadlines are adhered to.

  171. Time is power. So in the case of MTD project, I will rather suggest appropriateness of resource smoothing so as not disappoint those that have been eagerly waiting to use the service and project on record time

  172. Due to time constraints, resource smoothing will be a more feasible approach than resource levelling in the MTD events, because there’s already a fixed timeline which may have been communicated to end users. Rescheduling the time may have a great negative impact to the project than increasing cost, due to the project being a time sensitive one.

  173. Considering both scenarios, resource levelling approach is feasible to implement as this can create balance in the workload on resources in order to align resource usage with their available capacity. Resource levelling will not change the current capacity but focused on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadlines. This is contrast to resource smoothing, new resources can be added and this affects the project cost.
In resource levelling, the cost advantages relate to a steady distribution of cost over time, because cost of selection, hiring and then lay offs are often high and can be reduced through better scheduling and meet deadlines.

  174. Considering the importance of timing and prompt delivery, I think resource smoothing would be the best solution. This would help to avoid missed deadlines and maximize the use of available resources. This is the ideal option in order to maintain our reputation and credibility.

  175. Considering MTD and Glasglow as a case study, Yes, it will be possible to apply Resource Levelling approach regardless of any form of uncertainty or complexity.

A resource levelling approach can benefit MTD and Glasglow activities by balancing the workload on resources in order to align resource usage with their available capacity. This can be done by shifting schedules of projects within their available floats, which helps in stable workloads, enhance morale, reduce risk of stress and allows steady distribution of resource cost over time.
Resource levelling aims at balancing resourse usage by avoiding Over Allocation or Under Utilization of resources available, which can help to reduce project dey and cost, promotes efficiency in the project and mitigate scheduling conflicts.

The resource leveling approach requires identifying the resource requirements, analyzing resource availability and strategically Delaying and Extending Non-critical activities within available floats and Critical activities as well. All of which aims at adjusting the project schedule to balance the workload on resources. ~Julius

  176. After examining the provided figure Resources, smoothing is the best approach for both MTD and Glasgow, where the planned deadline remains but new resources are being added and the project cost increased.
Resources levelling isn’t advisable for MTD, as this might be a disaster for the sponsor of the event because they might not possibly reschedule the event because of MTD alone which might also affect others. Therefore , adopting resource levelling would mean disappointing the project sponsor.
Adopting smoothing means Satisfying and delivering project in the agreed time with clients and stakeholders without disappointment.
this helps the organisation to earn the trust of the client. Our values is priority.

    .

  177. Resources soothing maintains the project deadline but increases cost ,but leveling on the other hand brings in rescheduling,in this case ,resources soothing is advice in this kind of project so resources soothing has to come in but every change has to be communicated with the project sponsors .

  178. MTD is a company involved with water distribution. It has been allocated a specific number of days and time for the project. Resources smoothing aims to deliver original project deadlines while increasing project cost. For a company like MTD this will be the best method for them to assure accuracy and efficiency in delivering their project.Communication should be ensured with the stakeholders to realize a perfect project performance.

  179. For a company like MTD, which is involved in water distribution for mostly an event with a specific date and time. Resource Smoothing is a good option for them just that it will only increase the project cost and all the deliverables will still be achieved within the projected deadline.

Resource leveling might be a disaster for the sponsor of the event because they might not possibly reschedule the event because of MTD alone which might also affect other department(s).

  180. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines. And MTD is a water company which works in event projects, I’ll go with resource smoothing. Rescheduling of dates of event may not be favourable to stakeholders or clients as this may affect a lot of things as MTD may not be the only company working on the event project. If the event is rescheduled because of MTD company, other companies working on the project may also be affected and this may bring loss to stakeholders. As there is another option of resource smoothing which will not affect the deadline but only increases project cost, I’ll advise that smoothing be applied after proper discussion with the sponsor of the project.

  181. Resources soothing ,maintains the project deadline but increases cost ,but leveling on the other hand brings in rescheduling,in this case ,it can’t be rescheduled because this project involves a water company,so resources soothing has to come in but every change has to be communicated with the project sponsors .

  182. Considering the fact that MTD is a water company that handles events with fixed date, Resource smoothing is applicable which increases the project cost (This would be communicated to the project sponsors)While ensuring the events hold as expected with any disappointment.

  183. For MTD company, resource levelling will affect their kind of work since it has to do with deadlines. Though it could help the company come up with better ideas and innovations for enhanced production.

But, resource smoothing is actually preferred since deadlines will be affected, not minding the costs.

    1. Based on MTD/Glasgow event scenario, resource smoothing is more feasible. Though, it increases project cost but it aims at meeting with the project deadlines and deliverables. To get the best of this approach, communication with sponsors is very essential.

  184. While both resource smoothing and resource leveling aim to optimize resource utilization and manage project constraints, they differ in their approach. Resource smoothing focuses on balancing resource demand over time within predefined limits, while resource leveling adjusts project schedules to ensure that resource demand does not exceed availability at any point. Both techniques are valuable tools for project managers to maintain project efficiency, manage risks, and deliver successful outcomes.

  185. In my opinion, resource smoothing would be more favourable for MTD because they work with fixed dates and it will be totally inconvenient to adjust the schedule. Resource smoothing will increase the cost but it will reduce delay, create stability and enhance stakeholder satisfaction. Communication with the event sponsors is essential before implementing this approach.

  186. Resource levelling is all about balancing the workload on resources in a project, after assessing their capacity, to ensure that the available resources are redistributed in a manner that makes the project achievable with the available resources. The Project challenge experienced by MTD, a water installation events company was one related to project quality, as the supply of water was bad for the Glasgow event. Naturally, where the supply is bad and water provided is insufficient for the estimated level of water required for the project, resource levelling would not be ideal.

There is an anticipated number of end users expected at the event (the project), based on historical data. An amount of float has been provided for this in the project plan. Where the supply is bad and the water supplied insufficient, it is likely that the water provided would not serve the anticipated end users. Thus, the project scope (in terms of end users that can be served) would either have to be adjusted, by scaling down drastically, or the event spread over a certain number of days to enable the project cater to the anticipated number of end users. The project might have to be cancelled altogether where the water supply is so bad that the end users to be served would not justify the cost of the project. Resource levelling in this case would materially affect not just the scope of the project but other associated project costs as the availability of other resources and elements of the project including the availability and cost of the venue and the time costs of the sponsor and the other stakeholders in the project.

Consequently, resource smoothing would seem to be a more viable option where the cost of providing an alternative source of water can be incorporated into the adjusted project plan as opposed to making major alterations to the project scope that would affect timelines in a manner that would multiply the cost of the project or make the project a white elephant one.

  187. I would apply resource smoothing because the event has a date already which cannot be changed easily, therefore, I would add resources to meet up and maintain relationship with sponsor and stakeholders. This I would do through effective communication

  188. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines but the project cost is increased in the process. While resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines. So for me, considering the fact that MTD is a water company that handles events with fixed date, Resource smoothing is applicable which increases the project cost which most likely will be communicated to the project sponsors and this ensures that the whole events will hold as expected without any disappointment.

  189. MTD as a company that works with with events might not benefit from
resources leveling ad it will require rescheduling and impact of project deadline . Instead I think project smoothing will be a better option

  190. Yes is visible reason been that time is not altered to meet up with the customer’s demand for water. Since levelling approach still keep to time within the float schedule.

  191. The video about MTD makes it feasible to implement the resource levelling because persistent level of resource usage during the period of the project will not disrupt the already established one not minding putting a hold to the previous project so as not to overload and come out in effectively.

  192. Resource smoothing and resource leveling seek to optimize resource utilization and project schedules, they differ in their focus and approach. Resource smoothing aims to even out resource usage over time by adjusting non-critical activities within their float, while resource leveling prioritizes balancing resource demand and availability throughout the project by adjusting activity schedules within their total float

  193. Considering the fact that MTD is a water company that handles events with fixed date, Resource smoothing is applicable which increases the project cost (This would be communicated to the project sponsors)While ensuring the events hold as expected with any disappointment.

  194. Resource levelling would be feasible to implement in the MTD project because it would not alter the existing resources.

  195. MTD cannot afford to reschedule deadlines.
We have been told in the course of this study that ” they are the first in and the last out”.
Without them, there’s virtually no event.
They would benefit from Resource smoothing as opposed to resource levelling.
They had given an illustration earlier where the client didn’t supply correct information and they found out too late that the water available was bad,so they had to get in water tankers to meet up with the delivery deadline. It cost them extra but they were on time.

  196. MTD aims to maintain a constant level of resource usage throughout the project duration, even if it means delaying certain activities to avoid overloading resources. Resource levelling approach is ideal for them.

  197. Resource leveling and resource smoothing are both project management techniques used to manage resource allocation, but they serve different purposes:
    Resource Leveling:

Resource leveling is primarily concerned with adjusting the schedule of activities within a project to ensure that the demand for resources does not exceed their availability during any specific time period.
The main goal of resource leveling is to eliminate peaks and valleys in the resource utilization graph by shifting activities within their total float or slack time. And this affects the deadline of a project

Resource smoothing focuses on adjusting the schedule of activities within a project to ensure that resource usage remains within predetermined limits, typically by varying the start and finish times of activities within their float or slack time. This tend to increase the project cost as it helps to maintain project deadline.
From the video so far about MTD it’s feasible to implement the resource levelling approach since It aims to maintain a consistent level of resource usage throughout the project duration, even if it means delaying certain activities to avoid overloading resources.

  198. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines

  199. Considering the high cost of resources smoothing, implementing it is good and should be discussed to the sponsors. As the MTD works resources leveling will not be advised, because water is a very essential need in life. Looking at all that has been written the resources smoothing is to be implemented.

  200. We have been told that MTD which is majorly a water installation company at event centre is usually the last company to move to site after all other facilities have been installed eg the brick work, furniture work and even the plumbing work etc. Its even a hectic fight having to get out 3 to 4 days for them to fit in the water works before the start of the event proper.
With such constrain on time, Resource Leveling that impact deadline but no added cost will not be recommended. However Resources Smoothing which preserves deadline duration with not too significant impact on Resource capacity/ Budget would be most ideal.

Since the event date is fixed and sacrosanct its best to deploy/absorb more cost by employing Resource Smoothing to prevent fluctuatons and shift in deadline / timing so as to preserve the event.

  201. Resource smoothing will be the best approach to get the job done. Although it will bring about extra cost, the project will be delivered as at the agreed time.

  202. With a tight deadline and of course expedited deliverable, i will advise MTD apply resource smoothing, discuss with the sponsors or organization, elucidate on why it is necessary and get the job done

  203. In a stable and advanced community with premium value on the timely comfort of its inhabitants, such a project – handled by MTD Company – will be advised to employ resource smoothing. This will ensure prompt delivery with strict compliance. Except for unforeseen circumstances that may request for employing resource-leveling.

    1. MTD is an installation water company and best approach which can be used is resource smoothing which will make the delivery more costly but more efficient. Except for unforseen circumstances which can lead to reschedule that is resources levelling.

  204. Resource smoothing will be favourable for the event company because events comes with fixed dates and it will be totally disruptive to alter the schedule. Resource Leveling working with the float or increase the schedule will be more suitable for MTD the water company. This will increase the project cost, however the deliverable will meet acceptable criteria.

  205. The terms “resource smoothing” and “resource leveling” are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference between the two. Resource smoothing is a general term that refers to any process of balancing the workload of a team or project over time. This can include spreading tasks out evenly over the course of a project, or ensuring that each team member has a balanced workload. Resource leveling is a specific technique within resource smoothing that focuses on spreading the workload evenly across all resources. So, while resource leveling is a type of resource smoothing, the terms are not exactly the same.

  206. Because of the MTD company, the project’s operational nature is not always certain, so at some point, alternative approaches to presenting the results may be taken into consideration. Given that the initial project cost may have been too high to incur additional costs for project smoothing in order to complete the work by the deadline, project leveling may be essential in this situation. Thus, in order to avoid incurring additional costs, I believe it is best to discuss the project’s nature with clients and all other stakeholders by outlining how the leveling process will be applied in order to produce a high-quality project, albeit with a different deadline.

  207. Some projects does not give room for completion date adjustment which would have fit in into resource leveling. In a project where the delivery date can not be adjusted forward, I prefer using resource smoothing. Although my cost will increase but I will deliver on the due date.

  208. Timing is an important factor and therefore resource smoothing is advantageous over resource levelling.

  209. Opting for resource leveling may not be advisable; instead, a resource smoothing approach is recommended. This entails ensuring that members with the necessary resources from the office are available to address challenges promptly, thereby meeting deadlines and ensuring customer satisfaction. However, it’s important to note that this approach might increase the cost of production.

  210. Here, in regards to timing and prompt delivery, I’ll rather that resource smoothing should be opted for which is the ideal thing to do here as this will help save face and reputation.

The advantages of resource smoothing include.
    -It prevents missed deadlines
    -It maximizes resource utilization

    Thank you!

  211. Considering the timing of the project, Resource Smoothing will be the best approach over Resource Levelling.

  212. Resource levelling will not be the best approach here because of the starting date and finishing date of the project,in that case I will suggest resource Smoothing because of the timing of the project.

    1. Resource leveling will ensure timely delivery and reduce the chance of fluctuation and request for additional time.

  213. “‘Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines”.
As regards MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event. I will suggest the resource smoothing as the solution. This is due to the fact that resource smoothing tends to maintain the original deadline for the project but at a higher cost. The event date has been fixed and altering the date will not make sense. Hence the need to add extra “experts” to meet the deadline.
The advantages of resource smoothing include.
    -It prevents missed deadlines
    -It maximizes resource utilization

  214. Resource levelling helps to maintain the project deadline but increase the available resources and manpower. It doesn’t alter the project resources as in the case of MTD the water installation event, resource levelling might be possible cause it won’t affect the project deadline and the scope of the project though just additional resources will be added.

  215. Resource scheduling focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project cost. Did to the peculiarities of the MTD project, I will go for resource scheduling, with my negotiation prowess, I will get the non-confirming cost to execute the project perfectly

  216. In the aspect of the MTD water project, I wouldn’t advise using resouce leveling because of the timeline. The stakeholders may not be willing to spare time but rather open to using more resources as long as its within timeline.
The best practice for MTD Glasgow water project would definitely be resource smoothing that focuses more on preserving planned project duration and its deadline.

  217. Resource levelling will not my preferred approach because of the fixed dateline, the game is starting in 2/ 3 days. Resource smoothing will be the preferred option to be able to meet the dateline for the start of the games.

  218. As for MTD, resource levelling approach will impact the completion of the project within stipulated time. To meet up with stated time resource smoothing approach is better.

  219. Considering the time constraint involved in the MTD project as a water installation company
MTD is a water installation company for events and each of their projects has a stipulated timing, hence resource levelling approach might not be suitable if adopted as it involves rescheduling of time frame due to limited resources which will invariably affect the project deadline. My priority as a PM is to ensure resources are allocated adequately and that it should not be overutilized or underutilized. This might result in slight changes to the planned budget and additional costs but customer satisfaction will be met and delivery of services will not exceed the expected time. This is what matters most to MTD clients.

  220. Resource smoothing aims to balance resource utilization over time by adjusting the timing of non-critical activities, potentially resulting in a longer project duration. Resource leveling, on the other hand, focuses on redistributing tasks to eliminate resource overloads while maintaining the original project duration. Both techniques are crucial for effective resource management in project planning and execution.

  221. I would recommend the implementation of resource leveling in this kind of project because certain factors needs to be consider like understanding the economic aspects involved

  224. As much as project timely delivery is important, more also, project cost controlling is essential.
Resource leveling will ensure timely delivery and reduce the chance of fluctuation and request for additional time.

Implementing resource levelling will not be feasible as these water installing event work with timelines. The customer may not be willing to sacrifice time but may be better willing to use more resources to get the work done without shifting the schedule of the project.
However since timeline is important in these MTD water events, resource smothing may be more suitable, as this will focus on resolving any issue they have with resources without necessarily shifting the project dates. Resource smoothing allows for more flexibility in adjusting activities within their float roo ensure that resources are allocated efficiently without extending the project time

  226. It will not be feasible to implement resource leveling in this kind of project because certain factors needs to be consider like understanding the economic aspects involved in the negotiation and of the mutual value sought through the collaboration.
Secondly the environmental factor and the climate condition needs to be considered.
And lastly the more time wasted, is the more costly the project would become, time management is a skill all project manager must consider in any given projects which makes the project to be defined.

  227. In light of MTD’s critical role in supplying portable drinking water for sports events, my main focus will be on optimizing resource management. As we approach fixed deadlines before the main event, efficient resource allocation is essential to meet these time-sensitive requirements. Prioritizing resource optimization is key to ensuring resources are utilized effectively without any wastage or excess burden. Given the project’s intricate nature, adopting a strategic approach to resource management through optimization facilitates appropriate resource allocation. This systematic approach plays a pivotal role in exceeding customer expectations and providing top-notch services to MTD’s clientele.

  228. Haven observed the MTD project as a deadline project, I would say in the event of resource overload, I will advice a s
Resource soothing. Although, cost may change. But not resource levelling due to time.

  229. The core values of MTD, including passion for what they do, employee drive, support for everyone, and quality infrastructure, positively influence the ethical aspects of their operations. However, a misalignment or breach of these core values and ethical principles may lead to the following consequences:

    1. Violation of Rules and Regulations: A deviation from MTD’s core values and ethical principles may result in the violation of rules and regulations, impacting the project’s compliance and potentially leading to environmental disasters.

    2. Impact on Moral Principles and Quality Infrastructure: Adhering to moral principles and ethical practices, coupled with the values of passion and drive, is essential for achieving high-quality infrastructure. If these values are compromised, it could result in poor infrastructure quality, posing environmental problems and undermining the overall success of the project.

  230. The MTD project is a deadline project. Projects have to be completed within a timeframe so that events that are scheduled to benefit from the water installations will not be affected and if it does it will impact them greatly.

In a case where issues arises, my best bet in dealing with resource overload is resource smoothing, although there will be a cost cost that will generate a cost variance, but then this is an ideal way to maximise resource efficiency. I don’t think it will be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach because of the timing effect.

  231. Considering MTD’s role, I will prioritize resource leveling. Examining their provision of portable drinking water at sports events, this project must adhere to fixed deadlines preceding the main event. Prioritizing resource leveling is crucial to address the sensitivity of these deadlines, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently without overload or underutilization. Additionally, given the project’s complexity, resource leveling provides a structured approach to resource management, ensuring appropriate allocation. This approach is instrumental in meeting customer expectations and delivering high-quality services to MTD’s clients.

  232. Discussion on comprehensive view on Resource overload. Using MTD water project and Glasgow event as a case study.

Looking at the MTD project and Glasgow event scenario, using Resource leveling as an approach will not work, because there was a fixed date for the Glasgow event and it can’t be shifted, therefore it’s better to go for the Resource smoothing approach, with this I will be able to meet up with the deadline, although will incurred more cost but its preferable to satisfy the Event owner than worry about the cost.

    Akinmoye Segun Wilson …Cohort 13, Team 2

  233. Resource levelling might not be applicable in the case of MTD water supply because there is a certain a deadline to be met by the company and take for instance, in a case where the water to be supplied is needed for an occasion, then automatically there is a fixed date for the occasion already and there is no way it can be shifted.

The only applicable means in this case is Resource loading. It might be more easy for the set of people or company MTD wants to supply water to add or foster extra cost in order to meet up with deadline than to be disappointed.

  234. The MTD water installation project is anchored on the Glasgow event which is planned to start on a given date. Any adjustments in date of completion by MTD for the water project will impact on the event itself.
Resource leveling is better methodology to apply for MTD project as it cost effective. You have to manage what you have within the project lifetime despite project deadline change.

  235. The MTD water installation project is anchored on the Glasgow event which is planned to start on a given date. Any adjustments in date of completion by MTD for the water project will impact on the event itself. As such, being a PM at MTD, my focus is to deliver before the start of the event therefore resource leveling might not achieve that as it has high probability of exceeding the dateline of the project delivery. Therefore I’d rather implement the resource smoothing approach, make a little adjustments in the planned budget and incurre some additional cost but stick to my planned date of project delivery. By this, I will not interrupt the main event of the project owner for which reason we are contracted the water project.

  236. Basing on the scenario of Glasgow MTDs event, Resource leveling is not really applicable. It requires some degree of flexibility in time frames while in the scenario MTD Team had to move in some time before to establish unplanned approaches which might have resulted into change in planned costs. Thus, in this case resource smoothing would be the best approach rather.

  237. Not feasible as resource leveling provides flexibility in adjusting project dates, while resource smoothing focuses on meeting time constraints.

  238. Balancing workloads through resource leveling entails smoothing fluctuations in resource demand across the project timeline for MTD. This process involves distributing labor, equipment, and materials to prevent bottlenecks or overloads. By achieving this equilibrium, MTD can maintain a consistent and sustainable pace throughout the project.

Optimizing resource efficiency is a direct outcome of effective resource leveling for MTD. This approach enables the optimal utilization of available resources, including skilled personnel, equipment, and raw materials. By aligning resource deployment with project needs, MTD minimizes idle time and maximizes workforce and asset efficiency.

Furthermore, resource leveling serves as a risk mitigation strategy for MTD. By mitigating peaks in resource demand that could lead to burnout or delays, MTD enhances its ability to manage unforeseen challenges effectively. This proactive approach fosters a more resilient project timeline, reducing vulnerability to disruptions from external factors.

  239. Resource leveling is better methodology to apply for MTD project as it cost effective. You ve to manage what you ve within the project lifetime despite project deadline change.

  240. Resource leveling focuses on rescheduling and extending the project deadline which may be necessary in some cases when some inevitable circumstances occur, however one must be careful in this approach as it may lead to unnecessary extension of the project, abandonment and lack of follow up or supervision till the end

  241. Although they apply different methodologies and emphasize different goals, both techniques aid in the efficient management of project schedules and resource utilization.they can be applied depending on the project sponsor and the delievering time.

  242. Yes,it would be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario.
Resource leveling involves smoothing out resource usage to prevent peaks and valleys in resource allocation. For an event like the one MTD is organizing in Glasgow, resource leveling could help ensure that resources such as staff, equipment, and materials are allocated efficiently throughout the project timeline. This can help prevent bottlenecks and optimize resource utilization.

  243. Resource leveling seeks to balance resource availability and demand by delaying or splitting tasks to minimize resource overloads and resolve conflicts. Resource smoothing seeks to sustain a steady rate of resource utilization over time by modifying non-critical activities within their float.
Although they apply different methodologies and emphasize different goals, both techniques aid in the efficient management of project schedules and resource utilization.

  244. Cohort 13 Team 6

Due to time constraints, resource smoothing will be a more feasible approach than resource levelling in the MTD events, because there’s already a fixed timeline which may have been communicated to end users. Rescheduling the time may have a great negative impact to the project than increasing cost, due to the project being a time sensitive one.

  245. Ogheneochuko Ogheneruona
MTD is a water installation company for event and every of their projects has stipulated time line, Hence resource leveling might not be suitable if adopted as it involves rescheduling of time frame due to limited resources which will invariably affect the project deadline.
But if project sponsors are will to increase project cost or resources then resources smoothing would be the best option.

  246. Resource levelling is the best approach using the water installation approach. It definitely will be good to make rescheduling and making appropriate approaches to tackle the project.

  247. Given that MTD must to the deadline of the Glasgow event, which date cannot be shifted, i believe resource levelling will not be most appropriate strategy to use here. Rather, resource smoothing, which will preserve the deadline but increase project cost will be more suitable.

  248. Since the MTD water installation is for a purpose that’s stipulated to start at a given time, provided the water must be installed before the commencement of the event, resources leveling is the best option in balancing the work load on the resources. Any other compromises could alter the deliverable time.

  249. In order avoid rises and falls in resource usage, resource levelling entails rescheduling operations within the limitations of current resource capacities. Resource leveling could be a workable tactic to balance resource demand across the project timeline in the given situation if there are variations in resource availability or if some resources are over-allocated during particular project periods.

  250. From my own point of view resource levelling might work in situations where resources are not enough and sponsors refuses to met up with terms. With adequate communication and negotiation days can be increased.

    1. MTD is a water installation company which cater for water supply for mostly outdoor event, implementing a resource leveling approach might be tricky as they have fixed date for event.

resource leveling approach focuses of reschuduling with possible impact of project deadlines, they will only to use this approach if they have negotiated an ample no of days as they usually do to allow for testing and check to ensure quality service delivery. but if they dont have time for that they might have to settle for resource smoothing.

  251. Implementing a resource levelling might be tricky as MTD have deadlines for events. So they can’t afford to do resource levelling as as deadlines will be affected which in turn can affect business.

  253. Resource levelling approach involves balancing the work load on resources in order to allign resource usage with their avavailable capacity. So it will definitely be feasible to implement a water installation company and the glassglow events.

  254. For MTD, the water installation events company, the most suitable approach would likely be resource leveling. This involves adjusting the schedule of tasks to balance the workload without changing the number of available resources. Since the company may have limitations on their resources, such as equipment and staff, resource leveling would help manage these constraints while still completing the project efficiently. However, it’s important to note that resource leveling may potentially affect deadlines, so MTD would need to carefully consider the trade-offs between resource availability and project timelines.

  255. Resource leveling is all about optimizing the use of resources to make sure that everyone and everything is used efficiently
Yes, it would definitely be feasible for MTD to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario. Here’s why:
In this case, it would help MTD ensure that its resources (water, labor, etc.) are used in the most efficient way possible to serve the needs of the event.
It would also help reduce to costs and ensure that the event is well-prepared and well-executed.
-MTD would need to do some careful planning and analysis to make sure that all of its
Now let’s talk about the specific benefits that MTD could gain from implementing a resource leveling approach:
    – Lower costs: By optimizing the use of resources, MTD could reduce the costs associated with the event. This could include saving money on water, labor, equipment, and other expenses.
    – Better event execution: With careful planning and monitoring, MTD could ensure that the event runs smoothly and efficiently. This would help create a positive experience for attendees and ensure that the event is a success.
    – Increased customer satisfaction: By providing a high-quality event experience, MTD could increase customer satisfaction and loyalty.
So to implement a resource leveling approach, MTD would need to do the following:
    – Determine the availability of these resources during the time period of the event.
    – Evaluate the demand for these resources during the event.
    – Identify any potential bottlenecks or constraints that could impact the availability or demand for resources.
    – Come up with a plan to optimize the use of resources based on the above analysis.

  256. As far as MTD is concerned, being a company known for prompt project delivery, resource leveling won’t be the best option as there is a tendency for the delivery date to be extended.
In that wise resource smoothing allows the introduction of more experts and resources.

  257. Module 5 Lesson 17
    Balancing Workloads:
Resource leveling involves smoothing out the peaks and troughs in resource demand throughout the project timeline. For MTD, this means distributing labor, equipment, and materials in a way that avoids resource bottlenecks or overloads. By balancing workloads, MTD can ensure a consistent and sustainable pace throughout the project.
    Optimizing Resource Efficiency:
Effective resource leveling allows MTD to optimize the utilization of available resources. This includes personnel with specialized skills, equipment, and raw materials. By aligning resource deployment with project requirements, MTD can minimize idle time and maximize the efficiency of its workforce and assets.
    Enhancing Risk Management:
Resource leveling serves as a risk mitigation strategy. By avoiding resource peaks that could lead to burnout or delays, MTD can enhance its capacity to manage unexpected challenges. This ensures a more resilient project timeline, reducing the vulnerability to disruptions caused by external factors.

    Leveling of Resources. Discussion.

    Workload Balancing:

Resource leveling entails reducing the highs and lows in resource demand over the course of a project. This entails allocating workers, tools, and supplies so as to prevent overloads or bottlenecks in the resources.
MTD can maintain a steady and sustainable pace for the duration of the project by distributing the workload evenly.

    Maximizing Resource Efficiency:

MTD is able to maximize the use of resources that are accessible thanks to efficient resource leveling. This covers raw materials, equipment, and employees with specific training. MTD can optimize its personnel and asset efficiency and reduce idle time by coordinating resource deployment with project requirements.

    Improving Risk Management:

One way to reduce risk is through resource leveling. By steering clear of resource peaks that might cause burnout or delays, MTD can improve its ability to handle unforeseen difficulties.
By doing this, a more robust project timeline is ensured, making it less susceptible to disruptions from outside sources.

  259. Due to time constraints, resource smoothing will be a more feasible approach than resource levelling in the MTD events, because there’s already a fixed timeline which may have been communicated to end users. Rescheduling the time may have a greater negative impact to the project than increasing cost, due to the project being a time sensitive one.

This ensures a more resilient project timeline, reducing the vulnerability to disruptions caused by external factors.

  261. Resource leveling involves rescheduling activities within the constraints of existing resource capacities to avoid peaks and troughs in resource utilization. In the provided scenario, if there are fluctuations in resource availability or if certain resources are over-allocated during specific periods of the project, resource leveling could be a viable strategy to balance resource demand across the project timeline.

  262. I think a resource smoothing would be a better alternative rather than a resource levelling. This is because the event date have already been fixed and a change in end date could have a far more reaching devasting outcome.

  263. For a company like MTD and the nature of events that it holds Versus its reputation over time in delivering quality projects on time, resource levelling would mean adjusting schedules of its clients. In most cases the nature of their business (events) are fixed and time bound. Resource smoothing would be a better alternative incase their under planning of their resource.

  264. OKODI Okodi, Team 10

Reputation is something that is earned with hard work and dedication. For a company like MTD, which has a reputation for delivering quality projects on time, it was not an easy feat to achieve.

When a resource shortfall occurs, there are two difficult options to choose from: either exceed the initial budget or miss the deadline, both of which can damage the company’s reputation.

The best course of action in such situations is to opt for resource smoothing, as it causes the least amount of harm. It involves requesting additional funds to complete the project, but the MTD still has the opportunity to maintain its quality standards and reputation.

  265. For the MTD water installation event, opting for resource smoothing is the preferred approach over resource leveling. This choice is grounded in the recognition of MTD’s adherence to stringent project timelines, dictated by customer orders and the designated event schedule.

  266. An organization like MTD is keen about meeting deadlines.Hence ,when there’s an issue with resources short fall,I would rather subscribe to resource smoothing that would afford us delivery on planned date as long as quality will not be compromised.

  267. No, I do not think they could have applied a resource leveling approach because the MTD event would most likely have been fixed, and hence a reschedule of the activities would have seriously affected the outcome of the event.

  268. Every project there is a paramount outcome. As a PM on MTD , knowing fully well that deadline most be met. I will subscribe to resource smoothing, as this will be the best approach. Increase in cost might be the price to pay, However, project will be met and delivered to the client before deadline. As long as QUALITY is not compromise in the long run.
However, in a situation where deadline can be adjusted. I will always subscribe to resource leveler, as it helps one to manage resources better, reschedule if need be because I believe above all things, effective management of resources is the core of a PM job.

  269. Resource smoothing, prioritizing the maintenance of original project deadlines while accepting increased costs, is the optimal strategy for MTD’s water project. With fixed deadlines crucial to event-based projects like MTD’s, adjustments to the timeline are limited. Thus, adhering strictly to agreed delivery times is paramount. In contrast, resource leveling, which focuses on rescheduling without altering resource capacity, is less suitable for fixed deadline scenarios like MTD’s, where flexibility is limited.

  270. For me in advising MTD. while both resource smoothing and resource leveling aim to optimize resource utilization in project management, they differ in their primary objectives and approaches. Resource smoothing focuses on maintaining a steady resource demand over time to avoid peaks and valleys, while resource leveling prioritizes resolving resource conflicts and balancing resource demand with resource availability to create a realistic project schedule

  271. For a project like the MTD water project that often revolves around event, events have a fixed time which means much adjustments cannot be made to the timeline.

I think the resources smoothing approach would work best and resource levelling wouldn’t work. Resource levelling would work in situations where deadlines are flexible.

  272. Considering MTD, I think the best approach should be resource levelling though it may not be easy to adjust the project delivery date with collaboration and proper communication to the project sponsors it is achievable.
Considering the cost, man power training and skills required for that that kind of project it wouldn’t be advisable to apply resource smoothing.

  273. Ola Olatonade Cohort 13 Team 1
Using MTD, water installation event company based on the Glasgow event project. To apply a resource leveling approach will not be possible at it would affect the project end date invariably affecting the event, resource smoothing approach is best option in which the planned deadline is intact, increase resources which increases project cost.

  274. Considering MTD water installation during the Glasgow event.
It won’t be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in the scenario as it would affect the project deadline. MTD is a water installation event company which means they deal with strict deadlines from clients. The stakeholders of the events has already planned and are anticipating the commencement of their event and so it won’t be feasible to reschedule.

  275. Considering MTD and the Glasgow event, it would not be feasible to implement a resource levelling approach in this scenario, as the MTD water installation project falls under a strict timeline of completion, with events and stakeholders already anticipating the date of completion. Therefore, it would be more feasible to implement a resource smoothing approach, as the timeline for completion would remain the same, even if there would be an increase in thee operating and running costs.

  276. Using the MTD project, the best approach will be Resource Smoothing because it takes into account the fact that the project needs overtime to be able to meet up with schedule. Using the Resource levelling approach will be for when/if the time needed for is extended, which will have an effect on the project cost.

  277. Applying a resource leveling strategy to MTD’s water installation events is definitely feasible, however it would not be as simple as it would be in a manufacturing scenario. In this instance, resources are individuals with various schedules and skill sets rather than tangible components or commodities that can easily moved about and assigned as needed. Nevertheless, there are still methods for allocating resources so that the business can achieve its objectives as effectively as possible.
Having an adequate supply of skilled labor accessible for every event is one technique to implement resource leveling. This can entail assembling a “resource pool” of laborers with diverse skill sets and assigning them to projects.
To illustrate the timeline of each event and identify potential conflicts before they become a problem, it would also be beneficial to think about utilizing a Gantt chart or other comparable tool. In addition, MTD can think about employing cross-training to make sure that several employees possess the abilities required for every event in the event that an employee becomes unavailably absent.

  278. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

In this case scenario, resource smoothing is best option for MTD because deadline has been fixed and they need to deliver on the said date. They have to adhere strictly to the agreed time of delivery between them and the client.

  279. With MTD’s project, resource levelling is not an option because this tampers with the project’s deadline which shouldn’t be as the project appears to be an emergency one, hence, resource smoothing is best, though with increased cost, experts are introduced at some point of the project, helping deliver the project within deadline and also delivering within the wanted capacity.

  280. For the MTD project it can be feasible to use resource levelling. The Project is divided into sub projects and phases. As the phases progresses projects that match these resources are brought on board to perfectly execute the whole project on budget.

  281. For the MTD water installation event, opting for resource smoothing is the preferred approach over resource leveling. This choice is grounded in the recognition of MTD’s adherence to stringent project timelines, dictated by customer orders and the designated event schedule. Implementing the leveling approach, which involves altering the delivery timeline, carries the risk of adversely affecting the event. MTD’s project commencement and conclusion are intricately tied to the event timeline, making any adjustments to their timeline a potential disruptor to the overall event schedule. Therefore, it is advisable to invest in deploying additional resources, incurring increased costs, rather than compromising the timeline integrity for both MTD’s project and the overarching event timeline.

Therefore, it is advisable to invest in deploying additional resources, incurring increased costs, rather than compromising the timeline integrity for both MTD’s project and the overarching event timeline.

  283. The discussion on the possibility of applying a resource leveling approach To the MTD water installation project

According to Usman Ghani (2022), Resource leveling is a project management technique that involves resolving over-allocation or scheduling conflicts to ensure a project can be completed with the available resources. Resources include the time, materials, or tools needed to complete a project. This definition concurred with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) definition which states that resource leveling is a technique to help you (project managers) better accommodate resource constraints by adjusting the start and finish dates of a project. In doing so, you can make realistic project deadlines without overworking your team and increasing the total cost of the project. Given the above, it is safe to say that resource leveling is not an appropriate approach to the MTD issue. MTD is an organization with a global outlook and the water project is not a stand-alone project. The issue with the MTD project borders on resource augmentation which is the process of increasing the resources available to an organization to improve its performance or capabilities. This can include adding physical resources such as equipment or personnel, increasing access to financial resources, or investing in new technology
The issues with the water installation project are:
    • The need for additional toilets
    • Shortfall in the volume of water supplied
    • The need to put an extra buffer in place
    • The need to use water tankers as a contingency support
    • Having an interface with the local authorities to increase the volume of water, and
    • Adherence to the client’s timeline
The issues itemized above can be resolved using the resource smoothing approach, also known as time-constrained scheduling, it is a technique used to optimize resources to deliver a project without changing the delivery date. Smoothing will use free/total float and will not change the critical path. The constraints of using resource smoothing are:
    • A possible delay in the completion of certain activities.
    • Likely a demand for a few extra resources.
    • The challenge of the activity dependencies not adequately changed
    • A possible difficulty in adding more tasks or removing strain tasks.

  284. Taking the MTD’s Glasgow project as a context, there cannot be any availability of floating which will therefore make resource levelling a bad strategy here. Hence, resource smoothing could be employed by adding new resources such as water source or personnel to ensure that the deadline is met. Also, overtime may really be considered in order to ensure that all necessary measures are put in place within the agreed time.

  285. Considering MTD, the best method to use is resource smoothing which involves using overtime so as to meet up with the schedule.

Resource levelling approach can only be used if critical activities duration is extended which will definitely affect the project cost.

  286. With respect to the MTD Glasgow event, resource leveling will be a wrong approach because the project deadline cannot be changed. The entire project objective was to supply drinking water to an event and the date of the event was fixed.
Resource smoothing will be the right approach although it will impact the project cost.

  287. Now, let’s consider MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event that you have been following in the course videos thus far. When examining the provided figure, do you think it would be feasible to implement a resource leveling approach in this scenario?

Share your thoughts and join the discussion below.
    ——————————————–

I do not think resource leveling will work because it is solely focused on rescheduling and there is possible impact on project deadlines. A company like MTD can not afford to reschedule because their client event date is fixed.

But the project could be subject to revision, project sponsors are invited to a roundtable to evaluate or revise the scope .

  288. Resource smoothing aims at maintaining original project deadlines while increasing project costs. Whilst Resource leveling focuses on rescheduling with possible impacts on project timelines without altering the project capacity.

  289. Resource levelling approach could be used by extending the critical activities duration. Though that would affect the cost. Crticial activities could be started on time by extending the duration of it so as to spread workload for more extended days.

But I feel the best method would be resource smoothing by using overtime so as to meet up with the schedule.

  290. Resource smoothing will work best in MTD event because there is a limited time frame and they might not necessarily be able to reschedule so increasing the project costs and preserving the planed deadline will be the best option

  291. MTD projects take their origin from global or national programs such as it being announced as Official Sponsor of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Their projects are not stand-alone. Thus challenges encountered require remediation in the areas of resource increase which ensures project completion within allotted floats. These increases include
    1. Additional toilets added
    2. Shortfall in the volume of water:
    I. An extra buffer put in place
ii. More contingencies such as tanker support
iii. Speaking with local authorities with a view to increase the volume of water.
These decisions had to be made in line with the client’s timelines adhered to.

The foregoing decisions indicate the nature of the project which is linear with dependencies and non-flexible deadlines. Strictly, resource-smoothing is the right fit.

Resource-leveling would have scored a point had the MTD projects been stand-alone, bearing the undeniable label of Agile or iterative. Such would have gulped in either or all of the intrinsic elements of resource-leveling listed below:

    1. Delay non-critical activities within their available floats
    2. Extend non-critical activity duration within their available floats
    3. Delay critical activities
    4. Extend critical activities durations
    5. Split an activity into non-sequential activity.

  292. Resource leveling focuses on rescheduling with possible impacts on project timelines, however it does not alter the project capacity. So it is very feasible to implement this approach on many projects types including the MTD and Glasgow event.

  293. Considering that events are planned are held in a pre-adopted and limited period of time, I don’t think it would be possible to apply resource levelling in this scenario, as the deadline cannot be extended.

  294. Blessing Williams
    Cohort 13

Resource-leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead underscores rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines. This intrinsic quality of resource-leveling makes it not the right fit for remediation in the MTD Glasgow project.

  295. Resource leveling by its nature does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.

This characteristic of rescheduling, and the impact on project deadlines presents resource leveling as not the likely strategy for handling resource overload in the MTD-Glasgow Project.

MTD projects are heavily dependent on global and national programs from which they derive their relevance such as its being announced as an Official Supporter of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Their projects are not stand-alone.

The water installation at Glasgow was necessitated by the sports event taking place with a fixed date and venue announced and much publicity prescribed. And thus any remediation would have to be in the areas of procuring additional resources to ensure the timeline and planned end date is strictly adhered to. A reschedule
    was not optionable.

Resource-leveling incorporates the following strategies with cognizance of the flexibility of the project to drive its outcomes:

    1.Delay non-critical activities within their available floats/timelines
    2.

  296. Considering that events are planned are held in a pre-adopted and limited period of time, I don’t think it would be possible to apply resource levelling in this scenario, as the deadline cannot be extended.

  297. It is certainly possible to apply a resource levelling approach to MTD’s water installation events, although it may not be as straightforward as it would be for a manufacturing setting. In this case, resources are not physical parts or materials that can be easily moved around and allocated as needed, but rather people with different skills and schedules. That said, there are still ways to level resources so that the company can meet its goals in the most efficient way possible.

One way to apply resource levelling would be to ensure that there are enough workers with the right skills available for each event. This could involve creating a “resource pool” of workers with various skill sets, and then scheduling them to work on events based on their availability and the needs of the event. It may also be helpful to consider using a Gantt chart or similar tool to visualize the timeline of each event, so that potential conflicts can be identified and resolved before they become a problem. Additionally, MTD could also consider using cross-training to ensure that multiple workers have the skills needed for each event, in case one worker is unexpectedly unavailable.

Another approach to resource levelling would be to stagger the start dates of events, so that they don’t all occur at the same time and require the same number of workers. For example, if MTD knows that it has a limited number of plumbers available, it could schedule events so that they don’t all need plumbers at the same time. This would allow the company to use its resources more efficiently, and avoid overloading any one team of workers. Of course, this approach may not always be possible due to the specific needs of the events, but it is worth considering.

Lastly, MTD could also consider using outside contractors to fill any gaps in its workforce. This could be especially helpful for events that require specialized skills that are not available within the company. By bringing in outside help when needed, MTD can ensure that it has the resources it needs to complete its events, without overloading its existing staff. This approach can also provide the added benefit of bringing in fresh ideas and perspectives, which can help to improve the overall quality of the events.

In conclusion, resource levelling is certainly possible in the context of MTD’s water installation events. However, it may require some creative thinking and flexibility to make it work effectively.

  298. Yes, Applying a resource leveling approach could definitely help balance the resources efficiently for the event. It can help ensure that resources are used effectively without overloading any particular aspect of the event. It’s a great way to manage resources smoothly!

  299. Resource leveling involves resolving overallocation or scheduling conflicts to ensure a project can be completed with the available resources. For MTD, a re-evaluation of the project scope by the PM may be required and the estimated timelines will have to be adjusted to ensure quality and optimal product and a maximization of available resources, workload and personnel.

    1. Resource levelling aims at stabilizing workload and maintaining project costs, It is ideally possible to apply resource levelling in the MTD events. Using additional resources and extending durations will help to balance the workload of employees, curbs risk of errors and also improves the quality of deliverables.

  300. Resource leveling is modifying the project’s start and end dates in accordance with the availability of both internal and external resources. Making sure a project can be finished within budget, schedule, and scope restrictions while utilizing the resources at hand is the aim.
Regarding MTD at the Glasgow event (the water installation events); Additional resources might be required if the project deadline is to be kept. The project deadline may be extended if the objective is to complete the work using the resources that are currently available. This is to guarantee the project’s output quality.

  301. Resource leveling will help balance the workload on resources in order to align usage with their avaliable capacity helping them to meet the requried deadline.

  302. Resource leveling will be best for MTD because it will help balance the workload on resources in order to align usage with their avaliable capacity helping them to meet the requried deadline.

  303. Considering MTD’s water installation events in Glasgow, applying a resource leveling approach may be feasible. This method involves redistributing resources without altering project capacity, which could help ensure that resources are utilized efficiently without impacting the current capacity of the team. By adjusting the scheduling of tasks and resources, MTD could potentially manage workload fluctuations and maintain project timelines without significant changes to their current resource capacity.

  304. On the case of MTD and Event Glasgow, resource smoothing methodology can not be compromised on this project. Even though, the time, cost and quality are very important elements to consider, the fact remains that the purpose of this water projects awarded to MTD is for the purpose of the Glasgow Sport events that has already been fixed to commence on a particular date.
Every stakeholders of this events must have been involved, and it’ll be too late to fail in delivering at a stretched time beyond the agreed project delivering date.

Resource smoothing which should be the best approach against Resource Leveling should be the second to non decision. The truth holds that, it’s going to add more to cost because of some overtime workload, add more hands if the need be among others, the implication this may carry may include increase in domestic accidents at the work place, health risks among the workers, increase in the budget allocated.
Despite all these, the truth remains that, nothing can be better than making a project of the kind delivered at the slated time and or date.

  305. Resource leveling may be better since it won’t alter the project resources capability but gives room for improvement.
So, it’s better adjust the project duration than adding more costs.

  306. MTD did not use the resource-levelling approach which was not possible due to the delivery dateline. Rather they used resource-smoothing by requesting for the additional volume of water from a nearby facility.

  307. Resource leveling may be better since it won’t alter the project resources capability but gives room for adjustments and to me it’s better to affect the project duration than adding more costs.

  308. For a MTD, resource leveling would probably be the better option. Since the company’s goal is likely to complete the installation as quickly as possible, the goal of resource leveling (completing the project quickly) aligns with the company’s overall goal. The main drawback of resource leveling is that it can result in periods of underutilization for resources. However, in the case of a water installation company, it’s likely that the resources (such as construction workers) are specialized and not easily interchangeable, so the risk of underutilization is lower.

  309. Resource leveling will be better for MTD because it will not alter the existing resource capacity but will give room for rescheduling which will not have impact on the project deadlines.

  310. Resource smoothing is used when the time constraint takes priority. The objective is to complete the work by the required date while avoiding peaks and troughs of resource demand.
Resource levelling is used when limits on the availability of resources are paramount.

  311. Resource leveling will be better for MTD because it will not alter the existing resource capacity but will give room for rescheduling which may have impact on the project deadlines.

  312. Resource leveling will be best for MTD because it gives room for because it won’t affect the duration or deadline of the project

  313. Resource levelling maintain the project deadline but increase the resources, manpower and it doesn’t alter the project resources, in the case of MTD the water installation event, resource levelling might be possible cause as it won’t affect the project deadline and the scope of the project just addition resources will be added.

  314. Resource smoothing seems to be the best approach
For the MTD water project applying resource smoothing is the best because it will focus on meeting or allocating more resources to projects to ensure that the preserved planned deadline is kept
If resources leveling is applied the team will experience set backs which will make them not to meet up with the deadline

  315. Resource leveling involves adjusting the start and finish dates of project activities based on the availability of internal and external resources. The goal is to ensure that a project can be completed using the available resources while adhering to time, cost, and scope constraints.
For the MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event If the goal is to keep the current project deadline, more resources may need to be available. If the goal is to run the project with currently available resources, the project deadline may be extended. This is to ensure the quality of the project output.

  316. Applying a resource leveling approach to the MTD water installation events company in Glasgow would involve smoothing out resource allocation to avoid peaks and troughs in resource usage. It could be feasible depending on factors like the availability of skilled labor, equipment, and the project’s timeline. Utilizing the APM Body of Knowledge can provide valuable insights and guidelines for implementing such approaches effectively.

Resource-leveling is a project management technique that aims to smooth out the workload of resources (e.g., people, equipment) over time. In a water installation events company (MTD)
, resources like personnel, equipment, and vehicles are typically busy during peak seasons and less busy during off-seasons. Applying resource-leveling techniques could help balance the workload and prevent overloading or underutilizing resources, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable operation.

  318. Resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.
On the case of the MTD and Glasgow event, Resource leveling will not help in the case where the deadline of the project must be strongly adhered to. Resource smoothing should be employed here, and where Resource leveling is adopted considering the quality of the contaminated water, proper negotiations with the sponsors and the stakeholders must be taken. However resources and cost must be incurred as the deadline is rescheduled.

  319. In the case of MTD, the issue of contamination, it would be an issue of assessing the effects on cost and time , should any of the approaches be used. If resource smoothing is adopted, then it would mean that maybe getting a new contractor. The deadlines maybe slightly affected, but cost maybe affected considerably.

If resource leveling is to be applied, it would be an issue of reallocating tasks among the engineer or reworking on some processes . This may as well affect deadlines and possibly time trying to evaluate possible strategies to mitigate risk at hand. Either way, the effect must be evaluated to find out what is more suitable given the circumstances.

  320. Looking at the figure provided, resource smoothing aims to maintain original project deadlines while increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but instead emphasizes rescheduling, which may have an impact on project deadlines.
However the challenge of MTD with the Glasgow event concerning the water quality and a contaminated source had a deadline to be met.
So, applying a resource levelling approach would mean that, MTD would either delay the activities of Glasgow event in order to make use of its available resources by rescheduling its resources or start the activities on time but would extend its duration over more days.
Whichever of this decisions is made, it will impact on the project deadline and costs. This implies that the scope of the project itself should be reviewed.
Therefore, it would be better if MTD apply resource smoothing approach by substituting current resources with a new one. This way, project deadline is met, quality issues is resolved but cost is affected which will be analysed in the earned value.

  321. Resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines but increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change the current capacity but focuses instead on rescheduling, with a possible impact on project deadlines.

Resources are the key physical tools needed to execute projects. it could be materials or human. these are often planned alongside other elements during project planning. However, there are tendencies that in the course of project execution the PM may fall short of these resources. At this point, the available resources can either be levelled or smoothed to meet up with the project objectives. These are not without implications, though.

While resource levelling majorly impacts the project timeline and cost, resource smoothing may affect the project cost only while the timeline remains undisrupted.

  322. From the MTD videos seen, the Glasgow event seems to have a fixed deadline, and in this case, resource leveling doesn’t look feasible because it has to do with rescheduling. Except the stakeholders involved, from both ends (MTD and Glasgow stakeholders), come to a compromise, which may also place resource smoothing as an option.

  323. Project Resource Management:

Resources are the key physical tools needed to execute projects. it could be materials or human. these are often planned alongside other elements during project planning. However, there are tendencies that in the course of project execution the PM may fall short of these resources. At this point, the available resources can either be levelled or smoothed to meet up with the project objectives. These are not without implications, though.

While resource levelling majorly impacts the project timeline and cost, resource smoothing may affect the project cost only while the timeline remains undisrupted.

With respect to the MTD water project, it must be noted that the project has a definite deadline for which it must be completed so that the event can commence (simultaneous task you may want to call it). To this end, it will be difficult for the PM to apply the resource levelling technique. using this approach will affect the project timeline which will invariable affect the event’s schedule also. The most viable option available to the PM is the resource smoothing technique by hiring additional resources. This must first be discussed with the project sponsors. For as much as the sponsors approved the proposal, and willing to bear the added cost, the PM is good to go.

    Regards.

  324. I think it would not be feasible to implement a resource-leveling approach in this scenario. This is because the project was executed under a deadline and every activity was as important as the others, if they implemented resource leveling, the project would have finished overtime which would have affected the event to happen on time and created customer dissatisfaction however I think they would have implemented resource smoothing where they look for an additional resource that will help them to finish the task within scheduled time though it implies cost increase it protect and preserve the reputation and name of the company for future projects

  325. With the Glasgow MTD project, hardly will the delivery date be feasible, because of the gravity of the unforeseen situation that came up. in my opinion, it will not be advisable to implement the levelling approach due to deadline issues, and the ricocheting effects on all layers and actors involved in the project. i will most probably go for the resource smoothing approach, even though costing more, a failure cost was already built into the original budget, this is the advantage of building that cost into the budget. but it will get the job done and on schedule, thereby maintaining integrity and professionalism.

Resource leveling in MTD water project. Resource Smoothing for me would have been the best since it focuses on preserving planned deadlines even though it increases the project cost when new resource is added to the team without affecting the dealine of the project. E.g when a caterer is given a project to cook for 30 people for an occasion, she will bill you based on the 30 people but maybe along the process you added extra 10 people and you still want her to meet up that day, it will cost you more because the resources available might not reach the 40 people and she will still deliver that day instead of rescheduling the event due to lack of resources which will bring delay nd more cost too.

Noted that if resource levelling is applied, the team will experience huge setbacks and even the clients will be affected by you not meeting up with the deadline and rescheduling of projects due to delays.

  327. Resource smoothing is best for MTD, the water installation events company, and the Glasgow event so as to preserve project deadline, though it would invariably increase project cost. But you cannot afford for deadline to be affected as it is for an event.

Resource levelling would impact the deadline of the project which would impact the company’s future rating due to inability to meet a project deadline for an event.

  328. Resource leveling in the MTD Water Project

Resource leveling will have a time impact on the MTD project as it needs some processes to be done at a certain time and in sequence before others.
MTD will deliver the project but if they try to do it with only the resources available per time they will deliver the project late, this is where the vote to apply resource smoothing comes in.

  329. Implementing a resource levelling approach for MTD’s water installation project would have been the option but because in this project some phases are considered before another, it’s a project that one job must be completed before another one comes in. With the knowledge of resource levelling, they do not change the current capacity. It’s more of rescheduling which obviously can’t work in MTD but when resource smoothing comes in there will be an increase in project cost but the deadline will be fixed and preserved.

  330. Applying resources leveling in MTD project could cause a great set back and make the project slown, thereby not been deliver at expected time

  331. Using the MTD Water project as an example;

Resource Smoothing is the best based on the fact that it tends to focus on preserving planned deadlines though it increases project cost when a new resource is added to the team without affecting the deadline of the project.

On the other hand, If resource levelling is applied, the team will experience huge setbacks and even the clients such as not meeting up with the deadline and rescheduling of projects due to delays.

  332. Implementing a resource leveling approach for MTD’s water installation events in Glasgow could help optimize resource usage, prevent overallocation, and ensure a smoother execution. Factors such as event complexity, timeline, and resource availability would need to be considered for a comprehensive feasibility assessment.

  333. I will not agree to resource leveling having great impact on MTD water project because in this project some phases are considered before another, its like saying a job must be completed before another one comes in. With the knowledge of resource levelling that they do not change the current capacity. It’s more of rescheduling which obviously can’t work in MTD but when resource smoothing comes in tho there will be increase in project cost but the deadline will be fixed and preserved.
The additional cost will be invested which will yield good outcomes as the deadline for the project phases remain intact.
For Glasglow I believe with all these videos about the firm resource leveling will be good for them.

  334. Resources leveling implementation will be a suitable approach for MTD water project and the Glasgow project, resource optimisation can be applied over time by striking a balance between the available resources and the demand by the project managers.

  335. The best approach for MTD water project and Glasgow project will certainly be Resources leveling implementation, project managers can rely on resource optimisation over time by striking a balance between the resources available and the demand.

  336. Resources leveling implementation is the most suitable approach for MTD water project and the Glasgow project, project managers can leverage on resource optimisation over time by striking a balance between the available resources and the demand. The following most be taken into consideration, the periodic event in the case of MTD limited timing various steps must be taken to meet up. Resources availability and task preorietization

  337. Implementation of resource levelling might just be the best option for the MTD water installation project and the Glasgow project as resources might be far reaching and limited and if a resource smoothing approach is employed, it means having extra overhead expenses that weren’t budgeted for in the scheme of things when the project costs were being outlined. So it will be in the best interest of the MTD water installation Project and Glasgow to not change the existing or current capacity but focus on rescheduling which will definitely impact on intended project deadlines by having to extend the given period of time but on the long run save costs

  338. Though difficult, it might still be possible with good organisation and coordination to implement a resource levelling strategy MTD water installation firm that works within set durations established by athletic events. Through the use of resource levelling, project managers can optimise resource utilisation over time by striking a balance between resource availability and demand.

To apply resource levelling in this case, take into account the following:

Periodic Events: Given that MTD is limited by the periodic schedules of athletic events, the project’s critical path is probably well-defined. In order for the planned events to happen on time, various tasks need to be finished by a given date.

Material Availability: Determine which essential materials are needed for water installations and make sure they are accessible when needed.

Sorting jobs according to priority and effect on the project timeline should be done in a clear and concise manner. By doing this, resources can be better directed towards important tasks that need to be finished on schedule.

While raising the project cost, resource smoothing focuses on maintaining the scheduled deadline. While resource levelling focuses on scheduling changes that may affect the project deadline, it does not alter the current capacity.

  339. Implementing a resource leveling approach MTD water installation company that operates within fixed timeframes determined by sporting events can be challenging but may still be feasible with careful planning and coordination. Resource leveling is a project management technique used to balance resource demand with resource availability, optimizing the use of resources over time.

Here are considerations for implementing resource leveling in this scenario:

Fixed Timeframes: Since MTD is constrained by the fixed timeframes of sporting events, the critical path of the project is likely well-defined. This means that certain activities must be completed within specific deadlines to align with the scheduled events.

Resource Availability: Identify the critical resources required for water installations and ensure that they are available when needed. This may involve coordinating with suppliers, contractors, and other stakeholders to secure necessary resources within the fixed timeframe.

Prioritization of Tasks: Clearly prioritize tasks based on their importance and impact on the overall project schedule. This helps in focusing resources on critical activities that must be completed on time.

  340. I do not agree that resource levelling would be a good approach considering the fact that the project stages by MDT are overlapping. A phase is expected to be completed before another.
Levelling might alter the process of the project.
What can be done is to add more resources or replace resources in other to attain efficiency quality requirements.

  341. Resource leveling would not be appropriate for MTD project because extending the project date holds no benefit to MTD or its client. This is based largely on the fact that MTD projects have a very fixed timeframe which is determined by the dates that the sporting events take place which have been planned sometimes years in advance.

The only plausible approach is resource smoothing, allocating more resources to project to ensure that the end date is kept.

  342. Resource leveling involves adjusting the project schedule to balance the demand for resources, ensuring a smoother and more consistent utilization of resources over time which can work well with the MDT project

  343. Resource leveling is best suited for a long-term term project for the rescheduling of timeline would not after the project deliverable.

  344. As an upcoming project manager, constant communication with the stakeholders is what I held on to. Meeting the stakeholders individually to show them the evidence of what is on ground and juxtapose if it’s complementing and in line with their needs. Not being scared of bringing ideas to the discussion table is a great one because project manager are ought to endowed with problem solving skills.

  345. Resource smoothing focus on preserving the planned deadline although increasing its project cost. resource levelling on the other hand does not change the current capacity though focuses on rescheduling which have a possible impact on the project deadline.

  346. Every Jobs requires the communication skills, because the way you communicate will determine what the output of your Job will be like. Bad communication ruins Work.
Also continual professional development also matters because the world is advancing and we can’t just stay in a place. We need to advance with it so as to stay relevant

  347. That’s correct! Resource smoothing and resource leveling are two techniques used in project management to manage resources effectively. Resource smoothing focuses on keeping the original project deadlines intact by adjusting the allocation of resources, even if it means increasing project costs. On the other hand, resource leveling aims to maintain the existing resource capacity by rescheduling tasks, which may impact project deadlines. Both techniques have their advantages and can be used depending on the specific needs and constraints of a project.

  348. Making use of resource leveling for an event that is in two days is very risky because it might go over the event day and that will be a failed project and also the client will not be happy. It will be better to make use of resource smoothing instead, though it will add more cost but it will be most beneficial in this scenario.

  349. There are 2 ways to look at this case.
    1. Time for event start up is sacrosanct and the so there is no was resources levelling would work without meeting a key deliverable which is the start of the event. This would cause great dissatisfaction to the client.
    2. As per the Glasgow event, if the client had put forth the right information about the condition of the water, then the project team would have also built that into their project plant form the onset. With proper information, either resource smoothing or leveling could work as long costs and timelines are aligned with the client from the project onset.

  350. Resource smoothing is preserving planned deadlines while increasing project costs. However, resource levelling does not change current capacity extend and impacts the project deadline, without affecting the overall project timeline.

  351. I don’t believe that resource leveling would be appropriate for MTD project because extending the project date holds no benefit to MTD or its client. This is based largely on the fact that MTD projects have a very fixed timeframe which is determined by the dates that the sporting events take place which have been planned sometimes years in advance.

The only plausible approach is resource smoothing, allocating more resources to project to ensure that the end date is kept.

  352. Time constrained scheduling also know as resource smoothing, is a technique used to make the best or most effective resources to deliver a project without changing the delivery date. This technique might involve the expertise of more hands in other words hiring new people to speed things up, or changing the scope of the project which definitely increases or add to the project cost. While Resource constrained scheduling also known as resource leveling does not alter the existing resource capacity but rather duels on rescheduling, which may delay the project delivery deadlines.

  353. Resource levelling involves splitting or extending a section(s) of the project, without affecting the overall project timeline and may or may not increase project cost. However, resource smoothing will most likely increase project cost and extend the expected project deadline.

  354. resource smoothing focuses on preserving planned deadlines while increasing project costs; resource levelling does not change current capacity but focuses on rescheduling but impacts the project deadline

  355. Resource leveling may not be feasible in this scenario since the events cannot be easily rescheduled, and any attempts to do so would incur significant costs. This is primarily because invitations, tickets, and event advertisements have already been created and distributed. Consequently, resource smoothing emerges as a more viable option as it allows for the completion of the task by the anticipated deadline or possibly even earlier.

  356. As the MTD project manager mentioned, it would be better to apply the resource levelling to allocate resources according to their availability and after gathering quality information that would help the production of quality product. Though the resource levelling impacts on the deadlines but all the stakeholders are informed as long as the cost remain unchanged in order to finally provide the quality water distribution system.

  357. Resource leveling will not suit MTD’s project case scenario. There’s a fixed date for the event and resource leveling can extend deadlines, this would be catastrophic for the whole event.

  358. I would consider resource leveling for the MDT water cooperation because levelling balances workload and still impacts on project deadlines.

  359. Whatever the nature of a project, both the human, physical, and time continuum impact the planning and decision-making. For example, when a project is of a hybrid nature, like MTD, resource scarcity is
