As a virtual assistant, I see project management skills as essential, especially communication, time management, and continual professional development. These are key to handling tasks efficiently, meeting deadlines, and staying up to date with tools and trends. I’d like to improve in negotiation and understanding the regulatory environment, especially when working with international clients. To bridge these gaps, I plan to take short online courses, observe experienced VAs, and apply what I learn in real scenarios.

As an administrative assistant, two skills that has been essential to execute my duties are effective communication and time management.
I have been a customer care rep for a minute and this is my second attempt at becoming a project manager.
I would say all the skills because even tough I can communicate as a CRR, there are other ways to communicate and I need to keep learning new ways to do that.
I need to improve my negotiation skills to effectively align project scope, budget, and timelines. Additionally, I need to deepen my understanding of the regulatory environment and prioritize continuous professional development to enhance my expertise.
Reflecting on my background in customer service and procurement assistance, and now transitioning into the beauty industry with Tori’s Glam House, project management skills play a big role, even if my title doesn’t say “project manager.”
Here’s how I relate to each skill area:
1. Communication – Essential. From client interactions to collaborating with vendors or promoting content online, clear communication is critical. I feel confident here but always aim to improve by practicing concise messaging and learning better storytelling for social media.
2. Negotiation – Important. Whether it’s dealing with suppliers or negotiating makeup package deals with clients, this is an area I use often but would like to strengthen more, especially in setting fair prices without undervaluing my services.
3. Time Management – Crucial. Balancing bookings, content creation, and admin tasks is challenging. I’m working on improving by using scheduling tools like Google Calendar and content planners.
4. Understanding the Regulatory Environment – Needs Improvement. I need to be more informed about business regulations, taxes, and health standards in the beauty industry. A next step is taking a short course or consulting with a small business advisor.
5. Ethics and Adherence to Standards – Very important. In beauty, hygiene, client confidentiality, and transparent practices are key. I stick to high standards, but reviewing professional ethics regularly can help reinforce this.
6. Continual Professional Development – Work in Progress. I actively follow beauty trends and plan to enroll in advanced makeup classes and business development courses to keep growing.
Steps I’ll take:
• Take an online course in business regulations or entrepreneurship.
• Join beauty and business networking groups for ongoing learning.
• Read negotiation and time management books or listen to podcasts.
• Set monthly goals for skill development and track progress.
I’d say all of these skills mentioned are important to my job, however one which may still need improvement in is Communication. Most times communication tends to be a problem in the workplace which may lead to lack of understanding and not getting things done especially if working in a team.Listening to instructions may still be a skill that one still needs to work on
