As I journey through the DEXA Project Management course, I’ve begun to clearly identify my role as a project leader and team collaborator. The course has helped me recognize the importance of planning, organizing, communication, time management, and problem-solving as essential skills for project success.
I see myself taking on the role of a coordinator and strategist—ensuring that tasks are well assigned, timelines are followed, and team synergy is maintained. With every module, I grow more confident in my ability to manage resources, reduce risks, and deliver results. These skills are shaping me into someone who can take initiative, stay organized under pressure, and drive a team toward shared goals.
As someone who studied education, communication and time management are essential. To become a solution oriented, you must be able to rub mind together with the other party through initiating good communication skills. Time management is also crucial because time is the most valuable asset in the world that can’t be retrieve neither dispensable. Therefore, to deliver accurate and good results develop communication and time management skill. While you work towards other project management roles.
As someone who studied language, communication is very vital for any institution, because without an adequate communication nothing works. Therefore I chose chose communication as my field as a project manager.
In my previous role as a flight attendant, communication and time management were at the top, as you always had controlled time available to handle situations on board.
Negotiation comes next on the list, while i performed exceptionally at it in my previous career, one can tell that unlike the first two which can be applied in similar ways across different fields, the application of negotiation varies per industry. This is a skill i would like to improve upon.
I think the gap in my field has to do more with the following:
1. Communication
2. Continuing professional
In law, we were taught the importance of client interview counseling. We listen to the client problem but we were not taught how to communicate back to the Client in language they understand.
For the continuing professional development, new areas of laws are emerging ranging from Ai, cryptocurrency, data privacy etc. if we do not close this gap by filling in this gap in knowledge by updating our law curriculum in Nigeria, I think the basis of law which is to regulate the society will be defeated.
As a practicing optometrist undergoing the PM course, I find all the six areas of project management very crucial and very relatable most especially: communication, time management, ethics and adherence to standards and lastly continual professional development. The aforementioned project management areas when implemented adds up to the building of a better and more productive career practice.
As an working individual all of this are part of my day to day activity and its good to know that for every project to work regardless of the area of specialization all of this skills are essential.
In today’s world, skills are highly important and necessary across all fields.
The skills mentioned earlier aren’t limited to project management they cut across various industries. For example, as a secondary school teacher, communication is vital because we constantly engage and interact with students. Time management is also key to ensure we cover our lessons, and at times we negotiate with students, especially teenagers who love to test boundaries.
Working in a school also means following strict regulations and upholding professional ethics. Above all, continuous learning and upskilling are essential and non-negotiable in today’s world.
So, the skills you listed, communication, negotiation, time management, understanding the regulatory environment, ethics, and continuous professional development are crucial not only in project management but in many other sectors and on an individual level.
As a teacher working for the main time. All the skills mentioned are crucial most especially; communication, negotiation and time management. I will continue to practice the skills.
As a PM, communication is essential for my job. I need to know how to communicate with stakeholders, team members, and everyone who has the capacity to influence the project positively and negatively.
What needs to be worked on is understanding the regulatory environment, which of the most essential factors that influence the progress/initiation of the project negatively if ignored.
