Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.
One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:
The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.
This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).
This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):
The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.
Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?
- Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
- Quality is an internal focus.
- Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
- The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
- Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
- Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
- Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
- Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.
Share your thoughts on these statements in the discussion section below.

A. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
Service or output of a project can not be said to be of a good quality until the customer who is need of it or the client is satisfied with. Then you can say that it’s a good quality. The opinion of the client or customer is important in determining quality.
B. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
You don’t determine quality of a project at the end of the project. Any project that the project manager wants to it to be of good quality, then the process will start from the point of planning the project. The stages that will lead to the expected quality must be well organized, planned well articulated and followed. If not quality will not be achieved.
C. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
The project manager must discuss the with team members the level of expected quality. This will help the team members to know the level of effort expected from them.

quality is an important constraint of any project. it is should always prioritize
a customers need and it is best that quality is considered from a project inception, these ensure the team follows through with a quality assurance to be able to always meet the quality targets.quality issues should be openly discussed and not concealed to be able to identify corrective measures and ways it can be improved upon.
The quality of your process and product is paramount, As for me, I agree with the fact that
Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs, Quality is an internal focus, Quality should be considered from the project’s inception, The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals and Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
Prioritizing quality helps reduce unnecessary costs resulting from errors, repetition of product process, re-acquiring materials/ resources, overruns budget, saving time, etc. In this vein, the risk is mitigated. When quality is considered from the inception of a project, it helps to deliver products according to customer satisfaction, It boosts the reputation of the organisation/ company and also, there will be process improvement as the company strive to comply with standards. Therefore, a project Manager should focus on quality, particularly during the execution phase. This is crucial for project management.
A project manager must focus on Quality. This is a very important and critical factor of a project management especially at the execution stage as without quality, the whole project may be ruined and resources wasted.
For me as a project manager. quality in project management is about delivering successful outcomes that meet or exceed stakeholders’ expectations while adhering to project constraints such as scope, time, and budget. It requires careful planning, execution, monitoring, and control throughout the project lifecycle.
Quality management involves a continuous improvement process, where lessons learned from past projects are applied to improve future projects. This includes identifying areas for improvement, implementing corrective actions, and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within the project team.
