What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

  1. I agree with these statements: “Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs”, “Quality should be considered from the inception of the project”, “The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets”, “Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions”, and “Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision”.

  2. The statements I agree with are:

Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

The statements I disagree with are:
Quality is focused internally. The focus of quality, while it might be a standard is still largely dependent on fitness for use and as such would require reliance on the perspective of the end user of the product or service.
Quality problems should be hidden from customers and possibly also managers. Similar to the first one statement I disagreed with, quality problems directly impact the viability of the project for all stakeholders, managers and end-users alike. Thus, the ealier they know that there are quality issues, the better for a consequential amendment of project scope or budget to remedy the problem.
People are keen on producing quality outputs. This seems to be a hasty generalization as this might not be the case all the time.
Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision. This also seems to be a hasty generalization as this might not be the case all the time.

  3. 1. I agree – Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
customer/client is been considered by ensuring they get value for their money.

    2. I disagree – Quality is an internal focus. the
Quality of a project speaks more about a company or brand externally.

    3. I Agree- Quality should be considered from the inception of a project.
Quality should be the key word during the inception stage of a project for proper alignment of deliveries.

    4. I Agree- The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
The execution stage determines the other phases.

    5. I Agree- Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
This brings about collaboration on projection deliverables.

    6. I Disagree- Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
This can negatively affect company’s mission and loss of customers when satisfaction isn’t met.

7.Somewhat- Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
This is not always true, it depends on the team members motivation towards the project. some team members are self motivated, while some need someone to motivate them and that a project managers duty.

    8. Somewhat- Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision. Sometimes, team members look for ways to cut cost without considering the quality , while some, can produce quality output because of integrity.

  4. In my opinion as a PM,

Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
    Quality is an internal focus.
Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.

  5. My thoughts on quality:

    Agree:
    Quality should prioritize customer demands.
Quality should be considered at the start of the project.
Quality issues should be communicated freely in order to identify corrective steps.
People are eager to provide high-quality results.

    Disagree:
Quality is primarily internal. (To accomplish quality targets, it is crucial to focus on addressing external needs during the project execution phase.)
Quality should be integrated throughout the process. Quality issues should be kept hidden from consumers and managers. (Transparency is vital.)
Without rigorous supervision, team members fail to generate high-quality results. Trust and empower your team

  10. To me, Quality should be considered from the project’s inception. In project, quality is to be prioritised as communication, so project manager should be able to discuss openly with team before carrying out any project so at to bring a good result and outcome. By so doing ensuring stakeholders trust, confidence and also refer u to other clients.
