What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

  6. I wholeheartedly concur that quality needs to be centred on what the client wants since only then can they obtain utility. People, especially those who are end consumers, prefer quality above quantity. Quality should be taken into account from the outset of a project since it will support the company’s values and help it achieve its goals. Quality goods are crucial to the project since, in addition to assembling a dedicated team, project managers are expected to take the company’s objectives, ethics, and values into account. The most crucial phase of a project’s execution is achieving the quality target. “How you start determines how you finish” is the premise of a parable. The way we embark on our trip is determined by how well we start

Quality should be considered at the beginning of a project because it will help meet up with the company goals and uphold its values. As a Project manager, apart from building a committed team, we are expected to consider the company’s goals, ethics and values hence quality products is paramount in the project.
The execution stage of a project is the most critical to achieve quality target. There is a parable that states, “how you start determines how you finish”. Starting on a good note determines the outcome of our journey.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions. Just like the case study we had, it is important to discuss these issues openly as a team so that ideas and suggestions as to how it can be corrected will be generated to fix it in other to meet our expected goal and target.

  10. Every customer or client demands value for their money and one of the best ways to put this in perspective is giving good quality. So as PM, quality should be prioritize abinitio.
