What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

    As a Project Manager,

Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project because early focus on quality leads to smoother execution and makes it easy to identify mistakes.

Quality should be focused on the customers’ needs because don’t forget, we need to meet their expectations. Just like in products or stores, you need to have a positive reputation, provide quality service to have repeat customers or loyal customers and that’s the same with project management.

Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions as that will enable the team to improve and also understand the goal better each time just as we learnt earlier during previous lessons.

    As a project Manager,
Quality should not be focused internally as it will hardly satisfy the customer. As a manufacturer, market research is done before a product is made, you have to understand your target market, what they want and what they hate. So customer satisfaction is the primary goal and if quality is focused internally, it might overshadow the focus.

Quality should be considered throughout the project phase not just during the execution phase of a project because mistakes can happen during the planning phase, design phase and others. So i disagree with the statement, the execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets

Hiding quality problems from customers can lead to larger issues down the line. We should no forget that transparency helps resolve issues faster and better

  5. From my own point of view, I believe quality should be focused on the customer’s and team needs because perfect success comes from balancing the two. In addition to that, quality should be considered from the beginning of the project as this will help pattern all activities towards the goal.
The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.

  8. Quality in project management has to do with the project meeting and probably exceeding all requirements, standard and specifications.

    This means that quality should encompass the following facts;
    1.quality should prioritize customers needs
2.quality should be considered from the project inception
    3.quality is an internal focus
4.the execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals
5.quality should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions

It is important to also note that quality problems being concealed from customers or possibly managers can never yield to a quality result of a project.

  9. I would define quality as the degree of satisfaction required or expected from a product, service or situation which determine its fitness for use. In a project setting, what to look out in determination of quality should be:
    1 customers need.
2 proactively oriented. This imply that quality should be in mind at the time of the project idea generation.
3 transparency: it is important to administer customers feedback and carry them along, improve in the project to a better satisfaction.

  10. Quality should be “whole”. That is, all the components of a project included, with no exceptions.
The idea of the project, the planning phase, internally control, customers’ needs, the execution, the team members and finally the project output should make quality a priority.
