What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

  1. quality should be the watch-word for any project to be embarked upon and having the customers satisfaction in mind it would help the project manager and his/her team to consider the quality of any material and even the the technical know-how of the team members to be recruited , it would also be in focus during costing and every other thing that is needed for better service delivery.
quality service delivery on its own has advertised the project manager and his team for more contracts.

  2. In my experience, quality should not be compromised when it comes to projects. The output should be considered from the inception, so that the appropriate materials needed for a quality outcome can be purchased and cost included in costing.

All stakeholders should be aware of the quality intended from the start of the project.

Good quality outcome encourages the sponsor, it also keeps your customers and in general good quality makes the Project manager have peace of mind after the project and even team members are happy.

In my experience, there is no “Successful Project” without quality outcome.

  3. Reflecting on the statements about quality, here are the ones I agree with;

    1. Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.

    2. The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.

    3. Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

    4. People are keen on producing quality outputs.

    5. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

  4. I think quality should prioritize the customer needs because it leaves a long lasting bond between the organization and the customers even though it can be expensive, the customer wouldn’t mind in most cases because of the quality and it also build trust.

  5. I agree with quality should prioritize the customer’s needs because every project has an end user which is the customer so they have to be satisfied.
Also the quality should be considered from the project’s inception because that is what determines how every stage of the project is going to go. This will ensure that every one is on board with the idea of delivering quality.

  6. I believe quality should be discussed from the inception of the project and it should be an issue that is opened for discussion amongst the members of the team.
When quality is discussed at the inception of the project, it further help to sensistize the members of the team and general public of the values the organisation upholds.

  7. In my opinion quality should be considered from the inception of the project. This what set you apart and make your products unique from every other products and team members should be given close supervision in order to maintain standards at all costs

  8. On the issue of MTD event project with Glasgow it is impossible to use resource levelling method because an event has a fixed date and the deadline cannot be extended it will automatically mean project failure. So the best option will be resource smoothing so as to maintain the project deadline.

  9. In my opinion, meeting and exceeding expectations of customers should be considered a priority, because not only does it promotes company’s image, also it attracts more customers for more business opportunities.
Quality should be considered before, during and after the project to ensure we exceed customer expectations.
Quality should not be focused internally only, but also external.
Continuous monitoring and supervision must be maintained to ensure quality output.
All quality related issues non-conformances should not be hidden from internal or external clients, quality requires transparency and trustworthiness. Doing so would improve the system in every aspect of the project.

  10. I agree with “Quality should be considered from the project’s inception” because, a good project manager wouldn’t like the dent his reputation when it comes to handling projects. Quality may be perceived as UTILITY or QUALITY & UTILITY go hand-in-hand.
