Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.
One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:
The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.
This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).
This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):
The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.
Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?
- Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
- Quality is an internal focus.
- Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
- The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
- Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
- Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
- Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
- Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.
Share your thoughts on these statements in the discussion section below.

I agree with the following points 1.Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision
All the above listed points are valid except for point 6
1. Quality in project management should prioritize delivering what the customer needs and expects.
2. Planning for quality from the project’s start ensures that standards are met throughout, reducing costly rework later.
3. Discussing quality issues allows the team to identify root causes and implement corrective actions, fostering continuous improvement.
Quality should focus on meeting customer needs and balance both internal standards and customer satisfaction. Planning for quality from the start sets a strong foundation, and the execution phase is where these plans prove effective. Openly discussing quality issues helps build trust and find solutions faster, while hiding problems only creates bigger issues later. People are usually motivated to produce quality work when it’s valued, and a strong quality culture allows teams to perform well without constant oversight.
Not all of the statements about Quality above are true based on what I have learnt. I do not concur with Statements number 2, 5, 6, and 7 because it is bad decision for project management.
In my own humble opinion, I think Quality should be considered all through the phases or stages of a project. Quality I mean hers is the stakeholders intentional attitude towards achieving the projects goal and objectives.
Intentionality should be the watch word for the Project Manager and ensures that the team understands the concept of quality at every stage of the project.
As a project manager the quality of deliverables, whatever they’re is fundamental to achieving project objectives, also
Quality should be your core values.
Quality should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions:- when there is a standard or process for quality being laid as a guideline for the team members it brings out the best in us.
As a project manager you are responsible for the project so you have to supervise your team members and encourage them.
I agree with all the positions mentioned above, I believe quality is an important subject of discuss while planning a project.
I agree with the below:
*Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs:
The customer is the end user, hence the quality of the product should be a priority to the Project manager.
*Quality should be considered from the project’s inception:
The team should have a clear understanding of the quality of the product and also discuss it with the client and have the customer in mind.
*The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
*Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions:
This should be openly discussed with the client in order to fix any issue that might occur before the end of the project. and also to fix any mistake done by the team.
Quality should be considered from the project’s inception: The goal from the onset should be to deliver Quality services and not work below standard.
Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions: Working with people, mistakes are bound to happen but when quality issues are discussed openly, it reduces mistakes to zero
