What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

  1. To meet up with a particular project quality, it has to be planned. Planning quality from the beginning of the project is cost-effective as compared to examining the quality after the project outcome. That’s when it’s gotten right as per quality.
Then, project management is about working with a team of people so quality issues should be openly discussed with team members to identify corrective actions.
One person may not always have a perfect solution but when there is room for criticism, the best is likely to emerge In summation the stand on quality cannot be overemphasized and so should be an inclusive consideration in the whole dynamics of the project management from start to finish neither should it be undermined regardless of the factors of influence with full consideration of internal and external stakeholders, beneficiaries, long and short impact, purpose and drive of the project. Quality is well said and elaborate in this module. Quality to me should be that other thing that differentiate your team from other teams. That drop jaw, exceptional art that makes your team unique.

Quality as per the common understanding is the fitness of a product or service to serve its purpose. This therefore means that there exist various level of quality depending on the stakeholders and resources. To produce quality requires that it is considered at the idea conception point of a product or service and it is worked upon progressively until post-project management to ensure that it met the goal/ target/objective/benefit.
Quality should therefore target customers because they are the ones to use the deliverable(s). Meeting quality expectations should take an out-ward-in-ward approach to ensure that it serves customers’ needs/wants. Its management fully rests on the organization. The execution phase of a project to product a quality project deliverable is dependent on the previous stages leading to project execution. These precursor stages of planning, acquisition and storage of the resources determine the resource quality available at the execution stage.
Quality should be discussed with all parties that will be affected by it especially internal departments because this has a long term effect when the project deliverable has to be handed over to the client. This disclosure may give rise to workable solutions that will correct the problem.
Teams producing quality project deliverable has got little to do with supervision. Producing quality project deliverables largely depends on other factors such as homogeneity or diversity of the team, resource availability, scope and time of the project and not necessarily on supervision. Even closely supervised/monitored projects can still produce poor quality project deliverables especially where the ethics and integrity of the team and project manager are not checked.

  8. I agree with the statements. However, I believe quality should come before execution of the project. The quality you project will determine the cost of executing and running the project. Furthermore, quality should be determined according to the customers choice.
