Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.
One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:
The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.
This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).
This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):
The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

- Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
- Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
- Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

Quality should be discussed openly to find corrective actions,Quality problems should not be hidden from customers, this is where transparency and proactive communication comes in. Hiding it can damage brand reputation.
Quality is important in achieving a successful project because it affects the time, cost and output of the project. It is the attribute of a good that meets the requirements of a consumer/customer

Quality is the total attributes of a good or service, which meet the desired required quality of the buyer or customer.
Therefore quality should be focused on the customers need.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.
I believe quality should prioritize the customer’s needs: This is because the products or services are made to satisfy the customers needs, not the organization’s needs
Quality should be considered from the project’s inception: This helps the teams to put quality as a top priority when carrying out the processes of achieving a project goal.

Reflection on Key Statements Regarding Quality in Projects
Introduction
Quality is a critical dimension of every successful project, especially in industries like interior design and furniture making, where client satisfaction, durability, and aesthetics are non-negotiable. This paper reflects on a series of statements concerning quality management, assessing each through practical reasoning and project management principles.
1. “Quality should patronize the customers’ needs”
Interpretation & View: The statement suggests that quality should serve or align with customer expectations.
Reflection: I agree with this idea, though “patronize” may be a misused term. In project environments, especially in client-facing fields like interior design, quality must be defined by how well it meets the client’s functional and aesthetic needs. Excellence in execution is not enough if it doesn’t suit the client’s style or goals.
2. “Quality is an internal focus”
Reflection: I partially agree. Quality does begin internally — with standards, team discipline, and efficient systems. However, it ultimately exists to meet external expectations. A company with strong internal quality culture is more likely to deliver consistent, visible results, but ignoring the customer’s experience of that quality would be a mistake.
3. “Quality should be considered from the project’s inception”
Reflection: I strongly agree. Quality is not an afterthought — it starts from planning, design, procurement, and scoping. In my industry, early errors in space measurement or misunderstanding client briefs can ruin the entire output, no matter how skilled the team is during execution. Integrating quality from the beginning saves cost, time, and rework.
4. “The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals”
Reflection: This is true. The execution stage is where all planning translates into real-world results. It’s where materials are installed, furniture is assembled, and finishes are applied. This stage often determines whether the final result will reflect the planned standards — or fall short due to poor workmanship or lack of coordination.
5. “Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions”
Reflection: I strongly agree. Openness and transparency in handling quality issues build a culture of improvement and accountability. In my field, discussing issues like uneven finishes or wrong materials helps the team avoid similar mistakes on future jobs. Concealing problems only worsens their impact.
6. “Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers”
Reflection: I strongly disagree. Hiding quality problems is unethical and unprofessional. It damages trust and risks long-term consequences for the brand. In interior projects, a concealed flaw will eventually surface — leading to client dissatisfaction, negative reviews, or even legal implications. Transparency is key to maintaining integrity and credibility.
7. “Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high quality outcomes”
Reflection: I agree. Most professionals and craftsmen take pride in their work, especially in fields where the outcome is visible and personal. However, this enthusiasm needs to be sustained by supportive leadership, fair compensation, and opportunities for skill development.
8. “Team members do not produce quality outcomes without close supervision”
Reflection: I disagree — though context matters. Trust, clear expectations, and accountability often produce better results than micromanagement. While junior staff or trainees may require closer oversight, skilled team members typically thrive when given autonomy and responsibility. Excessive supervision can harm morale and creativity.
Conclusion
Quality is not a fixed standard — it is a strategic balance between meeting client needs, applying internal discipline, and being transparent about setbacks. High-quality outcomes are best achieved when individuals are empowered, clients are engaged early, and issues are addressed honestly. From my experience in interior design and furniture making, I have seen that the pursuit of quality must be both intentional and inclusive, involving every phase and every person.
