What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

  1. The customers are the target of a business without them the whole idea of setting up a business is useless therefore quality should be a major focus from the beginning because it will enable return client thereby driving a business forward. Quality issues should not be secret, it should be discussed openly so that corrections can be made promptly.

  2. I agree with statement 1,2 3,4,5 and 7. I do not agree with statement 6 and 8 because communication between stakeholders is a must no matter the project outcome either good or bad and also team members would definitely work better without micro management. Assigning a role to a particular team member signifies trust and it should go all the way…asking for feedback is okay but consistently being around while the assigned task is being carried out is not optimal although it is important in some cases especially when task are assigned to less skilled individuals

  3. I think quality should be centered/focused on meeting the customers needs and should be built into a project from the very beginning, not added later on. An open discussion of quality issues is essential to enable learning, corrective action and continuous improvement. Hiding quality problems or relying on excessively supervision is counterproductive, as transparency, trust, and empowerment are key to sustaining and maintaining quality.

  4. As a project manager per territorial development and sustainability, prioritizing customers’ needs should dominate the quality control efforts. Building and sustaining internal quality ethics should be one of the top goals of every organisation. Due diligence to achieve qualitative output/outcome should be considered at every projects’ inception. Importantly, transparency and wider consultations with relevant stakeholders in other to achieve durable projects cannot be overemphasized.

  5. I agree with discussing quality issues to identity corrective actions. This is because, before quality can be added to a project, you must first understand and be able to identify what can prevent quality. In doing so, you will be able to add quality to a project.

  6. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs because customer satisfaction ultimately defines value. At the same time, quality requires strong internal processes to consistently deliver reliable results. Openly discussing quality issues promotes accountability and continuous improvement. Together, customer focus, internal discipline, and transparency create a strong foundation for lasting success.
