Acting ethically – (PM Course Discussion)

  1. Karen said pointing out something to John will make the workspace not fun anymore simply because John is a nice guy. Technically she knows what to say but she’s afraid of hurting John’s feelings. That was completely unacceptable. As a PM one of the skill set required is upholding value. Your integrity can make or mar the organization to which you belong, and failing to do/say the right thing is an unethical behavior.

Skills employed, the major ones I think was a thorough research and effective communication.

  2. Issues of Professional Conduct featured in the scenario includes:
    – Inability to Collaborate: This is a clear breach of professional conduct. Collaboration is essential in any team environment. William’s failure to work with John demonstrates a lack of teamwork and respect for colleagues.
    – Lack of Communication: Not updating John and Karen on the project’s progress is unprofessional. It shows a lack of transparency and accountability. It also hinders the team’s ability to function effectively.
    – Lack of Problem Anticipation: This suggests a lack of proactive thinking. A good project manager anticipates potential issues and takes steps to mitigate them. William’s failure to do so could have serious consequences for the project.
    – John’s Inability to Manage William: This raises questions about John’s leadership skills. While William’s behavior is unacceptable, John should have addressed the issues more effectively. He should have provided clear expectations, communicated regularly, and held William accountable for his actions.

Skills Used to Bring Ethics into Decisions:

    – Team-Building Skills: These skills are essential for fostering a positive and productive work environment. John should have used team-building exercises and activities to encourage collaboration and trust.
    – Communication Skills: Clear, open, and honest communication is crucial for ethical decision-making. John should have addressed William’s behavior directly and provided him with constructive feedback. Karen was open and honest with her concerns about the document that was prepared by William.
    – Problem-Solving Skills: Identifying and resolving issues ethically requires strong problem-solving skills. John should have worked with William to find solutions that were fair and beneficial to the team while Karen’s problem solving skills led her to carry out research on the anticipated problem.
    – Negotiation Skills: These skills were essential for reaching mutually acceptable solutions despite existing conflict.
