A small consultancy formed by a team that left a larger firm to focus on a niche market. They have a growing reputation and have secured their first overseas contract.
Involves working with an overseas government agency, focusing on stakeholder engagement to inform future project stages.
Ethical Themes and Skills
1. Transparency and Integrity
Issue: William’s approach to gathering feedback through an opinion research firm raises questions about transparency. The engagement program that John envisioned was designed to gather nuanced insights directly from stakeholders.
Ethical Consideration: The integrity of the project relies on genuine stakeholder input. Relying solely on pre-existing data may overlook critical concerns that could impact the project’s success.
2. Communication and Collaboration
Issue: There is a disconnect between John’s expectations and William’s methods. John seeks a participatory approach, while William prioritizes efficiency.
Ethical Consideration: Effective communication is essential in project management. Both parties should collaborate to ensure that the project reflects the realities on the ground, rather than relying on assumptions.
3. Professional Responsibility
Issue: Karen feels conflicted about voicing her concerns regarding the feedback. She fears that criticizing the report may damage her relationship with John and affect her standing in the firm.
Ethical Consideration: Professionals have a duty to advocate for the best outcomes. Karen must weigh her responsibility to the project against her personal insecurities. Encouraging a culture where team members feel safe to express concerns is vital for ethical practice.
4. Risk Management
Issue: The reliance on potentially superficial data poses a risk to the project’s future stages. If significant hurdles are overlooked, it could jeopardize the project’s success.
Ethical Consideration: Identifying and addressing risks early in the project lifecycle is crucial. Ethical project management involves not only delivering results but ensuring those results are based on comprehensive and accurate information.
Conclusion
This case study illustrates the importance of ethical considerations in project management, particularly in a new consultancy environment. The dynamics between John, William, and Karen highlight the challenges of balancing efficiency with thoroughness, transparency with expedience, and personal relationships with professional integrity.
Recommendations
Encourage Open Dialogue: Foster an environment where team members can voice concerns without fear of repercussions. Regular check-ins can help address issues before they escalate.
Reassess Engagement Strategies: Consider integrating both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to ensure a comprehensive understanding of stakeholder perspectives.
Training on Ethical Practices: Implement training sessions on ethical decision-making and risk management to equip team members with the skills needed to navigate complex situations effectively.
By addressing these themes, XYZ Consultancy can strengthen its ethical foundation and enhance its reputation in the industry as a firm committed to integrity and excellence.

As we all know in project management communication is key. In this case study at the initials there was poor communication, assumptions and lack understanding between the team members.
But along the line with proper communication, research and seeking for help when needed they fixed the problem and achieved their goal.
The main issue among the three team members was poor communication. They misunderstood each other’s actions, didn’t give proper updates, and allowed emotions and assumptions to affect teamwork.
