Apply what you’ve learned (PM Course Discussion)

Put yourself in the role of a project manager collaborating with MTD, an events company.

Considering the difficulties and problems that MTD encounters in their projects, what insights have you gained this week that could offer assistance?

If an iterative approach were employed in organizing an event as a project, what would be the consequences? Similarly, what are the implications of adopting an agile approach? If the company sought your advice, what would you recommend?

  1. As a project manager collaborating with MTD, I will recommend the benefits of linear and iterative approach to them, that will enable them to improve on the project.

  2. This week, I learned that adopting an iterative and agile approach can significantly benefit MTD’s event projects. An iterative approach allows for phased planning and regular adjustments, reducing risks and aligning better with client needs. Meanwhile, an agile approach offers flexibility, quick adaptation to last-minute changes, and enhanced team collaboration.

My advice for MTD would be to use a hybrid strategy: start with iterative planning for structure and shift to agile execution for flexibility in the later stages. This combination ensures efficient project delivery, improved client satisfaction, and adaptability in a dynamic event environment.

  3. My take away from this week’s study is that, there’s no one approach to choose in managing a project. As a manager, I need to learn to combine the approaches.

The consequence of employing an iterative approach for an event planning is that, a lot of things will take the project manager by surprise. This is because the iterative is an unpredictable one and requires techniques to respond to the environment.

For an agile approach, it can help with it’s best energy for building solutions and receiving feedbacks for each to make sure that the team is building the right solution for the right people. It is the best approach to help the iterative in case of an unpredictable environment.

I will recommend the adoption of the two approaches.

  4. As a project manager collaborating with MTD, I would present to them the benefits of mixed Linear and iterative approach or techniques which will enhanced a successful end result which is goal and target of the stakeholders.

  5. As a Project Manager working for MTD, I will introduce linear/interactive methods. With the linear method I already know what to expect at every step of the project thereby making financial plans. Whereby applying the interactive method which help me overcome any unforeseen circumstances that might want to show up in the cause of the project .

  6. Working as a Project Manager for MTD will mean looking at or considering every possible variable involved. One cannot be rigid in doing that and so it might become necessary to switch up the methods (Linear and Iterative) being sure that they suit the situation at that point in time

  7. As a project manager I will introduce the Agile/interactive approach to them, that will help them to improve on the job

  8. From the challenges and issues MTD faced in their projects I think combining linear project and iterative project during projects work could be of help

The implications of iterative approach would be better when:
Completed work is more important to sponsors and the organisation
The environment, business strategy and project scope are likely to change

Agile approach would create better ways of managing software projects that frequently exceeded their costs and schedules, and failed to satisfy users’ need

The company should not rely on a particular approach but on both linear and iterative approach

  9. By using an iterative or agile approach, MTD can handle complex projects more easily, avoid common problems, and improve the chances of delivering successful results.
