Apply what you’ve learned (PM Course Discussion)

Put yourself in the role of a project manager collaborating with MTD, an events company.

Considering the difficulties and problems that MTD encounters in their projects, what insights have you gained this week that could offer assistance?

If an iterative approach were employed in organizing an event as a project, what would be the consequences? Similarly, what are the implications of adopting an agile approach? If the company sought your advice, what would you recommend?

  1. As a project manager for the events business MTD, I’ve gained important knowledge this week that will help me deal with the problems and difficulties they have in their projects. What I’ve discovered and its potential applications are as follows:
    1. Iterative Approach: MTD may adapt to shifting stakeholder demands and requirements by dividing a project into smaller, more manageable pieces and delivering them in iterations.
    2. Agile Methodologies: By implementing agile concepts like Scrum or Kanban, MTD may effectively prioritize activities, collaborate with others, and complete projects on time.
    3. Risk Management: MTD may lessen the effects of unforeseen circumstances, including last-minute cancellations or logistical problems, by proactively identifying and reducing risks.

  2. From what I have learnt so far
Since there is a change in the outputs of the project, I will ensure to use an agile method, by which we have iterative or sprint task that provide valuable feedback we can use to adjust or improve the over all project demands

What are the implications of using an agile method

It provide more feedbacks for improvement
It ensures all stake holders are accountable to the perform of the over all project
It makes sponsor adequately inform on the ongoing demands
It accelerate delivery time and output

  3. From what I’ve learnt so far making use of Agile approach as a PM helps leverage the situation as it is not advisable to focus on only one approach. Agile approach enhance adaptability, and efficiency in project management.

With the knowledge I acquire so far, using both agile and iterative will be very useful in solving many challenges in MTD.
As a project manager adopting different methods in running a project will enhance our productivity and effectiveness thereby arriving at a desired results within the time frame.

  5. According to what have learnt in this course using both agile and iterative methods will be the best for MTD .As a project manager we shouldn’t prefer one method than the other because sometimes combining the both methods is the best to get the desired result, though the the both has their differences in terms of disadvantages and advantages it also depends on the type of project we are to carry out.

  6. I can advise an MTD to apply agile approach because agile approach enhances adaptability, collaboration, and efficiency in project management. It allows teams to respond quickly to changes, delivering value incrementally while minimizing risks associated with traditional methods.

  7. MTD faces challenges like scope creep, tight deadlines, resource allocation issues, and communication gaps. Adopting an iterative approach allows for incremental improvements through stakeholder feedback, while an agile approach offers adaptability and prioritization to address fast-changing needs. However, both methods may introduce coordination and cost complexities. A hybrid strategy is recommended: use an iterative approach for early planning and agile for execution. This, coupled with clear objectives, collaboration tools, regular client check-ins, and team training, can help MTD deliver successful events efficiently.

  8. From what I have learnt so far when dealing with complex matters, it’s ok to adopt the use of linear and iterative project management system, this will enable the work to be divided into smaller bits in order to achieve quicker results and adequate feedback system develop.

    MTD can begin by:
    1. discovering the issues they are currently facing.
    2. Analyzing possible solutions, based on the goal of the project they are currently working on.
    3. Create a team of people that with be involved in the creation of the new working system, while maintaining their current system; that way there won’t be a glitch in the company’s daily running.
    4. Ensure to have a test run and have a working feedback system.
    5. Create deadlines for the switch to be made and 6. Ensure the right stakeholders and clients are properly communicated before the switch is done.

Before this steps are achieved both linear and iterative Life cycles have been brought into use.

  9. What I have learnt so far is the fact that both approaches are unique in their own ways but as a project manager you need to build your kits with proven methods and techniques, and also need to know how to use them to achieve desired results in the projects.
Consequences of applying the iterative approach would be making a whole lot of adjustments which would lead to more time required on the project.
Adopting the agile project would lead to a quick response to any change, limiting the amount of work to be done, prioritising and getting the work done on time.

    1. Making use of Agile approach as a PM helps leverage the situation as it is not advisable to focus on only one approach. Agile approach enhance adaptability, and efficiency in project management.

  10. As a project manager working with MTD, an events company, I’ve learned valuable lessons this week that can help address the challenges and issues they face in their projects. Here’s what I’ve learned and how it can be applied:

    Lessons Learned

    1. Iterative Approach: Breaking down a project into smaller, manageable chunks, and delivering them in iterations, can help MTD respond to changing requirements and stakeholder needs.
    2. Agile Methodologies: Adopting agile principles, such as Scrum or Kanban, can enable MTD to prioritize tasks, work collaboratively, and deliver projects efficiently.
    3. Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating risks proactively can help MTD minimize the impact of unexpected events, such as last-minute cancellations or logistical issues.
    4. Stakeholder Engagement: Effective communication and stakeholder engagement are crucial to ensure that all parties are informed, aligned, and satisfied with the project outcomes.

    Implications of an Iterative Approach

    1. Flexibility: An iterative approach allows MTD to respond to changing requirements and stakeholder needs.
    2. Reduced Risk: By delivering smaller chunks of the project, MTD can identify and address potential issues earlier, reducing the overall project risk.
    3. Improved Quality: Iterative delivery enables MTD to refine and improve the project outcomes based on feedback from stakeholders.

    Implications of an Agile Approach

    1. Increased Efficiency: Agile methodologies promote collaborative work, prioritization, and efficient delivery, enabling MTD to complete projects faster and with better quality.
    2. Enhanced Stakeholder Satisfaction: Agile approaches emphasize stakeholder engagement, ensuring that their needs are met, and they are satisfied with the project outcomes.
    3. Adaptability: Agile methodologies enable MTD to respond quickly to changing project requirements, stakeholder needs, or unexpected events.

    Advice to MTD

    1. Embrace Iterative and Agile Approaches: Adopt iterative and agile methodologies to enhance flexibility, reduce risk, and improve quality.
    2. Foster Collaborative Culture: Encourage a culture of collaboration, open communication, and stakeholder engagement to ensure successful project outcomes.
    3. Develop a Risk Management Strategy: Establish a proactive risk management approach to identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks and issues.
    4. Invest in Training and Development: Provide training and development opportunities for staff to enhance their skills and knowledge in project management, agile methodologies, and stakeholder engagement.

By implementing these recommendations, MTD can improve their project management capabilities, enhance stakeholder satisfaction, and establish a competitive edge in the events industry.
