Put yourself in the role of a project manager collaborating with MTD, an events company.
Considering the difficulties and problems that MTD encounters in their projects, what insights have you gained this week that could offer assistance?
If an iterative approach were employed in organizing an event as a project, what would be the consequences? Similarly, what are the implications of adopting an agile approach? If the company sought your advice, what would you recommend?

This week, I learned the importance of ethical principles, values, and iterative approaches in project management, which can help MTD address challenges in event planning.
Iterative Approach Implications
Taking an iterative approach to setting up an event means breaking the project into smaller phases, allowing continuous improvements. This ensures:
Early identification of issues (e.g., vendor delays, venue constraints).
Flexibility to adapt to changing client needs.
Reduced risks through frequent evaluations.
Agile Approach Implications
An agile approach would make MTD’s event planning more adaptive and collaborative. It involves:
Regular feedback loops to refine event details.
Enhanced team collaboration and stakeholder involvement.
Faster response to unforeseen challenges like weather disruptions or budget adjustments.
Advice to MTD
I would recommend MTD to:
1. Adopt an iterative approach to allow incremental improvements and mitigate risks.
2. Use agile principles to maintain flexibility and improve stakeholder satisfaction.
3. Prioritize ethical decision-making in vendor selection, budget allocation, and client interactions.
4. Develop a clear code of practice to align their team with organizational values and project goals.
By integrating these approaches, MTD can enhance efficiency, improve event quality, and build a strong reputation in the industry.
The iterative process gives MTD the power to learn and improve through trial and error. This process becomes efficient and adaptable, so MTD response to new information and shifts in the marketplace.
Agile on the other hand offers more flexibility and collaboration, enabling teams adjust approaches as gather feedbacks and insights throughout the development process. This makes Agile flexible, adaptable, rigid and structured. These gives rise to prioritize customer involvement and feedback within the developmental process.
My advice for MTD is
1. To identify the goals and constraints
2. Utilise soft skills
3. Create a scope and guard it
4. Account and prepare for risk.
Thinking of the challenges and issues MTD face in their projects, what have you learned this week that could help?
I learnt that in a complex world, projects Managers cannot afford to prefer one project management method over another. If the environment you operate in is unpredictable, and the challenges are many and varied, you will need to have a correspondently varied set of tools and techniques at your disposal. Managing a project need not be a choice between either a linear or iterative approach, in practice we many need to combine them.
The linear approach is refers to a traditional, sequential, and predictive methodology for managing projects. This approach assumes that projects can be planned and executed in a straightforward, step-by-step manner, with each phase building on the previous one.
while the the Iterative approach is a flexible and adaptive methodology that involves repeating a series of cycles or iterations to progressively develop and refine a project’s scope, timeline, budget, and deliverables.
What would be the implications of taking an iterative approach to setting up an event as a project?
The implications is that an iterative approach do not begin with detailed specification, project plans and schedules, they may start with just an idea, hypothesis and vision and all the project tools are tested together, which might not be good to set up an event as a project.
What are the implications of an agile approach? If you were asked to advise the company, what would your advice be?
Agile approach implication are increased complexity, higher resources and may not be suitable for all events.
If i was advice the company, I would advise the company to weight, it project duration and also use both the Linear and iterative approaches for its projects.
Hello! As a project manager working with MTD this week, I’ve been focusing on improving our project delivery, especially considering the unique challenges of the events industry. This week’s learning has really highlighted the importance of flexibility and adaptability. We often face last-minute changes, unexpected vendor issues, and shifting client priorities. That’s where iterative and agile approaches come in.
As a project manager working with MTD, the events company, I’ve learned valuable insights this week that can help address the challenges and issues they face in their projects.
Challenges and Issues Faced by MTD
1. _Uncertainty and ambiguity_: Event requirements and expectations can change rapidly, making it challenging to plan and deliver.
2. _Complexity and interdependencies_: Events involve multiple stakeholders, vendors, and teams, which can lead to communication breakdowns and coordination challenges.
3. _Time-sensitive and high-pressure_: Events have fixed timelines, and delays or issues can have significant consequences.
As a project manager hired to plan and execute a sports event for the MTD company, one approach cannot suffice, giving the challenges as narrated in the videos I watched earlier, I have learnt that projects come with sudden surprises that can alter established plans, scope of environment, and even the cost of needed materials to achieve the goal/objective.
The consequences of using the iterative approach in planning an event is that the event is not a product that requires the users to test-run before it is certified ready for use. It is an event that will need a linear approach for it’s planning through to it’s end stage.
The components of the VUCA framework can suffice during the event which the project manager can use the iterative approach to combat the issue.
I will advise the company to utilize the hybrid method to plan for an event.
Different project management approaches can impact the successful completion of a project and in this case, MTD, a dynamic industry such as event management. Understanding possible issues faced by MTD, such as the venue change due to capacity, changes in client requirements, coordinating different service providers, and other time-sensitive deliverables, the choice of project approach would affect the outcomes significantly.
By employing an iterative approach in organizing the event, the planning process would involve continuous feedback loops, allowing for incremental improvements. This could be beneficial in refining event details, especially for recurring events, but it might also lead to extended timelines or scope changes if not managed properly.
An agile approach would bring flexibility and a collaborative mindset to the project. It promotes frequent communication and adaptation, ensuring that the event aligns with stakeholders’ needs and expectations, making MTD adapt quickly to sudden changes. However, an agile mindset must be fostered by the stakeholders and role priorities clearly set out.
If MTD sought my advice, I would recommend integrating agile principles that emphasize adaptability, clear communication, and iterative improvements. By using agile methods, MTD can create a project management environment that not only responds to challenges effectively but also empowers the team to collaborate and innovate throughout the process.
This week, I’ve gained insights into how different project management approaches can impact the success of a project, particularly in a dynamic industry like event management. MTD likely faces challenges such as shifting client requirements, vendor coordination, and time-sensitive deliverables. Understanding these factors, I see how the choice of project approach can significantly affect outcomes.
If an iterative approach were employed in organizing an event, the event planning process would involve continuous feedback loops, allowing for incremental improvements. This could be beneficial in refining event details, especially for recurring events, but it might also lead to extended timelines or scope changes if not managed properly.
Adopting an agile approach would emphasize flexibility and collaboration, enabling MTD to adapt quickly to last-minute changes. However, without clear structure and discipline, agile could lead to inefficiencies if roles and priorities are not well-defined.
If MTD sought my advice, I would recommend a hybrid approach—incorporating structured planning for key milestones (such as venue booking and logistics) while allowing for iterative adjustments in areas like marketing and guest experience. This would ensure stability where needed while maintaining adaptability for changing event dynamics.
To take an iterative approach allows for
stakeholders engagement: The use of sprints in the iterative approach gives room for the stakeholders to understand what is going on in the project and they are also able to give feedbacks.
Flexibility: The project team can easily make changes based on feedbacks.
Risk management: it allow the team to easily identify if something might go wrong and make corrections as early as possible.
Efficiency: The team is able to produce an output at the end of each sprint, which makes more visible and faster progress.
An agile approach allows for quick response to change or problems.
As a project manager I will advice the use of an hybrid approach to combine both linear and iterative approach

1 noticeable implications of using iterative approach to event setup and agile approach is that the iterative approach aids continuous event adjustment and it increase the rate of risk management. While, the agile approach aid flexibility and responsiveness.
My advice is that the iterative approach should be used for structured planning while, the agile should be used for real-time adaptability.
