Apply what you’ve learned (PM Course Discussion)

Put yourself in the role of a project manager collaborating with MTD, an events company.

Considering the difficulties and problems that MTD encounters in their projects, what insights have you gained this week that could offer assistance?

If an iterative approach were employed in organizing an event as a project, what would be the consequences? Similarly, what are the implications of adopting an agile approach? If the company sought your advice, what would you recommend?

Contribute your thoughts and ideas to the discussion.

  1. Using the insights learnt this and also posing an a project manager collaborating with MTD,an event company.
If an iterative or agile approach were employed in organizing an event as a project due to difficulties and problems that MTD encountered in their project.i would recommend they have a new plan, and have meetings, get reviews from customer and sprint again if they aren’t satisfied till, customer satisfaction is obtained.
The implications of adopting an agile approach is to gain experience from team members and also positive customers feedback.

  2. The best approach for MTD’s problem is both the iterative and the agile approach which allows them to plan in phases, test ideas, get feedbacks and make decisions from the feedback they got. Agile helps with the unpredictable circumstances that will arise on the way. It helps with quick response.

  3. Well, Agile and iterative approach help manage complexity and uncertainty, which are very common in event planning and allow flexibility, quick adjustments, and continuous feedback which is key for MTD’s success.

An iterative approach involves planning events in phases, testing ideas before execution, and adjusting based on feedback. This reduces risks and ensures the event meets expectations.

Agile approach will enable or allow MTD to respond quickly to last-minute changes, team collaboration, prioritize critical tasks and making it suitable to adapt to unexpected challenges or new modification.

My advice to MTD is to use both iterative and Agile to handle flexibility, uncertainty and prioritize stakeholder feedback.

  4. This is the first time I’m learning about VUCA framework and with the explanations, it made so much sense.
I also learnt about the linear and iterative approaches to projects and how to select or mix them up depending on the projects.

The VUCA framework is my favorite topic so far.

  5. This week I’ve learnt about the linear and iterative project lifestyle
Considering the type of service rendered by MTD, I’d advise they go with the agile method as this helps to get feedback at each stage of work. This will help in reducing last minute changes, I would advise MTD to apply iterative project lifecycle and making use of Agile planning method.

  6. I learnt about the agile and iterative approaches. I learnt about VUCA
I prefer the iterative approach because even when you don’t really have all the answers but just an idea, you can establish on that idea and from there be able to carry out your project.

I’ll advise the MTD to use the agile approach, this approach allows changes and encourages team collaboration. Team collaboration would help them tactical their problems faster and adopt changes.

  7. This week, I’ve learned that Agile and iterative approaches help manage uncertainty and complexity, which are common in event planning. These methods allow flexibility, quick adjustments, and continuous feedback which is key for MTD’s success.
An iterative approach would mean planning events in phases, testing ideas before full execution, and adjusting based on guest feedback. This reduces risks and ensures the event meets expectations.
An Agile approach would allow MTD to respond quickly to last-minute changes, prioritize critical tasks, and encourage team collaboration, making it easier to adapt to unexpected challenges.
My advice to MTD is to use iterative planning for flexibility, apply Agile principles to handle uncertainty, and prioritize stakeholder feedback for continuous improvement.

  8. The insights that can be of help is that, as a PM l will accept projects that are either linear or iterative. If it’s a Linear project,it’s just like a waterfall project with each step dependent on the other and then doesn’t require much feedback from the client and all the decisions are made and the project is completed, example House project however if it’s Iterative, which is more innovative, ambiguous and each step requires feedback from the client, example is website development.
Steps l will take, l will ensure effective communication, understudy the project, make necessary adjustments with clients input, and also apply the VUCA principle

  9. If the linear approach were to be adopted, some of the consequences will likely include
    1. the lack of flexibility and room for change. Hosting/organizing an event comes with the mindset of preparing for unforeseen changes/circumstances and the linear approach does not leave room for that.
    2. When taking the linear approach, calculating cost and time is one of the requirements, but due to the unpredictability of organizing events, especially big company events, this approach will not be a suitable one in this circumstance.

If the iterative approached were to be adopted, some of the likely consequences will include
    1. the inability to speed up the event to the liking of the stakeholders. An event that is rushed in planning will make for a disastrous execution.
    2. The event process might not be properly planned or documented because the stakeholders care more for the end result than the work process.

As a PM, my advice would be to equally adopt a little bit of both approaches. A little bit of all solutions makes for a big, beautiful outcome.

Project comes in different ways and can be handle differently. As a PM, it is necessary to be flexible and adaptable to apply the method that best fit in in that situation.
