I as a receptionist from my own perspective by examine all this six areas and my thoughts on their essentiality are areas of improvement
1. Communication, this is an undeniable essential because as a receptionist is the voice and face of the organization.Clear and professional communication is very important in terms of handling calls, greeting visitors, answering inquiries and relaying messages effectively
2. Negotiation This implies to scheduling appointments potential dealing with minor misunderstanding.
3. In terms of Time management one needs to prioritize effectively to manage calls, appointments and administrative duties efficiently
4. Ethics and adherence to standard is also essential by maintaining confidentiality, showing respect and following company policies and procedures and representing the organization appropriately.
Looking at these six key areas for project managers, I believe all of them are valuable, but some are particularly essential in my current position:
Most Essential Skills for My Job
Communication: This is arguably the most critical skill. In my role, I need to clearly articulate project goals, timelines, and expectations to stakeholders at various levels. I find myself constantly translating technical details for non-technical audiences and ensuring everyone has the information they need to succeed.
Time Management: Managing multiple competing priorities effectively is vital. I often juggle several projects simultaneously, each with their own deadlines and resource constraints. The ability to prioritize tasks, delegate effectively, and maintain realistic timelines directly impacts project success.
Ethics and Adherence to Standards: Maintaining integrity throughout project execution builds trust with both team members and clients. Following established standards ensures consistency and quality in deliverables.
Areas for Improvement
Negotiation: I recognize this as my biggest growth area. I sometimes struggle with pushing back on scope creep or negotiating for additional resources when needed. I tend to accommodate requests rather than finding mutually beneficial compromises.
Understanding the Regulatory Environment: While I have basic knowledge of regulations affecting our projects, I could develop deeper expertise, particularly as we expand into new sectors with different compliance requirements.
Steps to Bridge These Skill Gaps
To improve my negotiation skills, I could:
Take a dedicated negotiation workshop or course
Read books like “Getting to Yes” or “Never Split the Difference”
Practice role-playing difficult conversations with a mentor or colleague
Start with small negotiations to build confidence before tackling larger issues
Document successful negotiation strategies to refine my approach
To enhance my regulatory knowledge, I might:
Schedule time with our compliance team to learn more about our regulatory framework
Subscribe to industry newsletters focused on regulatory changes
Join a professional association that provides updates on relevant regulations
Create a simple reference guide of key regulations affecting our projects
Allocate time each quarter to review regulatory changes that might impact projects

Reflecting on my previous roles, especially as a team coach, customer representative, and executive assistant, I can clearly see how project management skills are crucial—even if I wasn’t formally titled a project manager. Here’s how I view each area in relation to my experience and where I need improvement:
1. Communication – Essential
In all my roles, clear and timely communication has been critical whether it was explaining procedures to customers, delegating tasks to team members, or coordinating with stakeholders. I feel confident here, but I’m always looking to improve by practicing more active listening and tailoring communication styles to different audiences.
2. Negotiation – Needs Improvement
While I have handled conflict resolution and some level of persuasion, formal negotiation like securing resources or timelines wasn’t a big part of my previous roles. I will like to strengthen this area, especially for future leadership or managerial positions.
3. Time Management – Essential
Balancing responsibilities across customer service, team supervision, and admin tasks required prioritization and discipline. However, I sometimes fall into multitasking traps. I plan to work on better task batching and realistic scheduling.
4. Understanding the Regulatory Environment – Needs Improvement
This wasn’t a big focus in my past roles, but it’s becoming increasingly important, especially in tech-driven environments. I will like to take short courses on industry-specific regulations to become more informed.
5. Ethics and Adherence to Standards – Essential
Working in banking and customer service, integrity and ethical behavior were non-negotiable. I have always prioritized compliance and accountability.
6. Continual Professional Development – Ongoing Focus
Currently taking a course on In-Demand IT Skills is a part of my development plan. I’m also setting goals to earn certifications (like PMP or Agile) in the future.
Next Steps to Bridge Skill Gaps:
Join negotiation workshops or webinars
Take online mini-courses on relevant industry regulations
Use digital tools (e.g., Trello, Notion) to fine-tune time management
Stay active in professional forums and LinkedIn communities for continuous learning
As someone currently participating in Dexa’s Project Management Bootcamp and with a background in education and administration, I’ve come to realize how relevant project management skills are across various roles—even those not traditionally labeled as “project management.”
Skills I find essential for my role include:
1. Communication – Clear communication is crucial when coordinating with teams, giving instructions, or managing expectations. It ensures alignment and boosts productivity.
2. Time Management – Managing multiple tasks, deadlines, and responsibilities requires strong time management to stay efficient and reduce stress.
3. Continual Professional Development – Staying updated with tools, trends, and methods is vital, especially in fast-changing fields.
Areas I need to improve upon:
1. Negotiation – I realize I need to be more confident in advocating for ideas, timelines, and resources, especially in collaborative or high-stakes environments.
2. Understanding the Regulatory Environment – I often overlook the legal and policy aspects that impact projects, and I’d like to gain more awareness in this area.
Steps I plan to take to bridge these gaps:
Enroll in short courses focused on negotiation strategies and regulatory frameworks.
Attend webinars and read articles on compliance and ethical standards in project work.
Practice negotiation in role-play scenarios within my bootcamp group.
Continue engaging with professionals in the field to learn from real-world experiences.
I believe that being intentional about skill-building in these areas will not only help me in project-related roles but also make me a more effective team member and leader.

I dedicate 20 hours/week to online courses.
Undertaking this course has reinforced my understanding that project management skills are universally applicable, even beyond formal projects. These skills—such as communication, negotiation, time management, regulatory awareness, ethical practices, adherence to standards, and commitment to professional development—are integral to nearly all human endeavors. While these skills are often applied unconsciously, studying and identifying them fosters self-awareness, empowering project managers to achieve objectives more intentionally.

The course has highlighted the importance of following systematic processes, such as engaging stakeholders, negotiating priorities, and managing timelines. To succeed in my role, I must also navigate regulatory frameworks, uphold industry standards, and maintain strong ethics—all of which drive me to pursue continuous professional growth. This structured approach ensures projects are completed economically, efficiently, and effectively, aligning with stakeholder expectations.

Uji Saturday requires strong project management skills to ensure its success and sustainability. Communication is key when coordinating with volunteers, mobilizing resources, and engaging community members. Negotiation skills help in securing food donations, sourcing supplies at fair prices, and forming partnerships with organizations that can support the initiative. Time management can be enhanced by creating workflows, assigning specific roles, and maintaining a checklist for each session. Understanding food regulations can be achieved through research and engagement with local health authorities. Ethical practices can be reinforced by keeping transparent donation records and ensuring fair food distribution. Lastly, continuous professional development through workshops on fundraising, community leadership, and food security can help expand the project’s impact. Severally, I enjoy circumstances when I can negotiate the best timing for a test or an exam with my students which makes them more comfortable. Continous learning and development is inevitable because as much as we are using textbooks, technology advances on a daily-basis and problem-solving is taking a different trajectory. Knowlegdge of code of ethics and regulations in tutoring guides me in when, how and where to draw the line when it comes to interactions with students, colleagues and parents.
