My current role requires active communication, effective time management, for time management I have worked on it and can say I can effectively manage my time well to some extent but my communication skill is still far behind. I lack negotiation skills. Daily I work on my skills to sharpen it that’s where continual professional development comes in.
In my current role, i think negotiation is where i’m falling short and i’ll have to improve on it so i can properly fit into the role.
I also think time management is something i need to improve on too but it is not a big challenge
1. Required Skills
In my role, the following three areas are the most critical:
Communication: Essential for translating user needs into technical requirements and keeping cross-functional teams aligned.
Time Management: Critical for managing product roadmaps, meeting sprint deadlines, and balancing multiple feature priorities.
Negotiation: Necessary when prioritizing the product backlog and managing stakeholder expectations regarding scope and timelines.
2. Skill Gaps
Knowledge of the Regulatory Environment: As products scale, I need a deeper understanding of data privacy laws and industry-specific compliance standards.
Ethics and Standards: Ensuring that AI and data usage in product development align with evolving ethical frameworks.
3. Action Plan
Short-term: Enroll in a specialized course on data privacy (like GDPR or CCPA) to better understand regulatory constraints.
Long-term: Establish a “Project Management Standards” checklist for my current projects to ensure every phase meets high ethical and professional benchmarks.
Most importantly for me it will be time management…is one area I feel I will really need to work on. As it might affect my ability to meet up with deadlines which can in turn affect the whole project. The ability to prioritize that which is urgent against that which is important. To beat this creating a schedule of things and sets of criteria and adhering strictly to it will be the game changer.
Time management..is very crucial. In every project that is been giving our ability utilize our schedule task effectively to achieve maximum results and Meeting responsibilities 🙏 is another area I ought to improve….Time prompt efficient collaboration.
Communication: to bridge communication I would focus on active listening and audience adaptation to make sure I understand clearly before responding as well as tailor my message to each crowd im addressing to ensure effective communication. I would also make sure to not use jargon on my language as I address different crowds.
Negotiation: to improve negotiation skills the best approach os to find middle ground, which makes sure everyone feels heard and there is mutual agreement about the final decision. This final decision should also reflect the importance of everyone s contribution so that they feel heard and considered.
Time management: I would first caegorize tasks by urgency and importance which makes sure I miss no deadlines and I am ahead of any assignments or projects. I would also use the time blocking method which ensures i dedicate specific hours ro intense work thst requires a lot of focus and zero distractions. This makes sure important things get done and are not overshadowed by regular or admin work.
Understanding the regulatory environment: this can be done by identifying the regulatory bodies governing my specific field e.g the PMI and APM for project managers. Subscribing to industry newsletters and networking are also good ways to ensure one stays withing the loop of their line of work.
Ethics and adherence to standards: these help when it comes to navigating moral Grey areas when it comes to one’s line of work. It goes beyond just following rules in the workplace. To ensure this is accomplished one must constantly ask themselves if what they are engaging in aligns with their job description/scope of work or ethical guidelines.
Continual professional development: this requires one to move from passive learning to a structured growth plan as explained by one of the tutors on the dexa platform. Here, a skills gap analysis is necessary to identify new industry trends that will be relevant in the next few years and adjust your syllabus accordingly.
