As we talked about before in this module, it’s important for project managers to work ethically. This means doing the right thing, not just following rules. There are written rules and laws, but there are also moral rules and values.
What are these moral rules and values? Let’s break it down with some explanations and examples.
Moral rules are like a list of dos and don’ts for how a person should behave. For instance, one moral rule is “don’t steal.”
Values are strong beliefs that guide how we act in different situations. They show what we think is good behavior. Values can be personal, but they can also be shared in groups like companies. When a bunch of people in the same group share these values, they shape how everyone acts in that group.
In companies, these shared values are super important. They make up the core of what the company’s culture is all about. These values are a small set of important beliefs that don’t change much, and they really influence how people act at work.
For example, The Open University (2019) has some values they believe in:
In our work, we stick to The Open University values of being inclusive, innovative, and responsive.
The value of being inclusive and innovative is a big part of what people do at The Open University. They use this value to make sure everyone can access knowledge through new and creative solutions.
Values and moral rules help everyone know how to behave in a group or at work. It’s good to think about them to understand how they affect the decisions we make when working on projects.
Think about the values your workplace or a group you’re in follows. Can you name some of these values? How do these values affect how you work on projects? Share your thoughts with other learners in the discussion below.

Some examples of values in the organization where I work and how t influences one’s work are:

In the organization where I function as a community manager, our core values are guidelines on comments, it must be respectful, straight to the point and educative.
In the organisation I am part of, we have three cardinal sins which are collecting of tips, usage of mobile phones in the premises and wearing of slippers in the premises. These habits have been inculcated in all staffers with zero tolerance. It has become a norm and a principle in the organisation
My own idea of Values are beliefs or principles that guide our actions and decisions. They shape our worldview, influence our behavior, and help us determine what is important to us.
Examples of Values in my Workplace include:
1. Respect: Treating others with dignity and consideration.
2. Integrity: Adhering to moral and ethical principles.
3. Loyalty: Being faithful and committed to relationships.
4. Creativity: Thinking outside the box and being innovative.
5. Hard work: Putting effort and dedication into tasks.
These Values can affect how i work on projects because it has a significant impact on being innovative, influencing our choices, relationships, and overall well-being. Understanding our own values can help us make more informed decisions about the projects and achieve the goals.
In the organisation where I work, We have ingrained in us the art of excellence, and collaborative effort between various teams/department. This organisational values creates in the employees a mindset that encourages excellence while working hand-in-hand with other department to achieve the organisational goal which is the bigger picture.
In my professional journey, I hold the value of Collaboration and Inclusivity at the forefront. I believe that a successful workplace thrives on the collective strengths of its team members, where every voice is heard and valued. By fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed, we not only enhance creativity and innovation but also build a strong sense of community.
I am committed to creating a workspace that encourages open communication and teamwork, recognizing that our differences are our greatest assets. This approach not only drives engagement and satisfaction but also leads to better decision-making and problem-solving. Together, we can achieve remarkable outcomes while ensuring that everyone feels respected and empowered to contribute their best.
This value guides my interactions and decisions, motivating me to support my colleagues and promote a culture of mutual respect and shared success.
Moral are attributes that keeps one in check, more of a positive attitude towards anything. Values on the other hand, especially in a working setting, is like a driving force that makes that keeps the vision and mission of that company going. for instance, doing the right thing at the right time, showing up early, be in correct uniform, proper handling and managing of materials and equipment.
Correct! Keep people in check.
Some months back two of our staff fought, and were later dismissed because of this.Moral principle actually keeps one in check, especially when spelt out in the company’s policy.
Every organization needs to have strong ethics to be able to stand out. It is often said that, where there’s no rule, law, there’s no sin.
Moral principles guide are the bedrock of individual and company. For example, having integrity puts you on the path of great people all the time. This makes you set standard. When people know you for a particular principle, they follow suit, especially as a leader and front liner.
Values guide our day to day lifestyle and relationship with people. How you act outside your company shows a whole lot about where you work. Value is super important, as it helps in making decisions that will push the company forward.
In every community, organization to be able to drive in professional ways an to sustain the intergrity with of good report, rules an regulations must be they such as,(humans laws) as the primary observatory, but want people in the organization understanding the purpose an the vision of where the are, that’s will enable them to more responsible by sustaining an promote the value of every single person in the company.
