As we talked about before in this module, it’s important for project managers to work ethically. This means doing the right thing, not just following rules. There are written rules and laws, but there are also moral rules and values.
What are these moral rules and values? Let’s break it down with some explanations and examples.
Moral rules are like a list of dos and don’ts for how a person should behave. For instance, one moral rule is “don’t steal.”
Values are strong beliefs that guide how we act in different situations. They show what we think is good behavior. Values can be personal, but they can also be shared in groups like companies. When a bunch of people in the same group share these values, they shape how everyone acts in that group.
In companies, these shared values are super important. They make up the core of what the company’s culture is all about. These values are a small set of important beliefs that don’t change much, and they really influence how people act at work.
For example, The Open University (2019) has some values they believe in:
In our work, we stick to The Open University values of being inclusive, innovative, and responsive.
The value of being inclusive and innovative is a big part of what people do at The Open University. They use this value to make sure everyone can access knowledge through new and creative solutions.
Values and moral rules help everyone know how to behave in a group or at work. It’s good to think about them to understand how they affect the decisions we make when working on projects.
Think about the values your workplace or a group you’re in follows. Can you name some of these values? How do these values affect how you work on projects? Share your thoughts with other learners in the discussion below.

Work ethics is a core in any organization. Work ethics varies because it depends on the nature of the organization.
Irrespective of the differences, ones must protect the ethics of the organization someone’s work so that at the end of the day, you will be proud of your job and be able to showcase what you do in your organization
In my organisation, we stick to the values of providing creative solutions to individuals, businesses and brands seeking for a platform to monetize their online courses.
This extends to content creators, Realtors, Brands, and more!
Providing Creative solutions to people who fall within this sector and beyond, is a key value in the organization.
This has impacted my relationships, and Projects, as a Sales Ambassador and B2B Copywriter, mostly due to the fact that I am saddled with the responsibility of empowering people out there who are ignorant of such means to take off the heavy task of Networking and online presence to get them the required sales they need for their courses.
This creative solution tends to transform my thinking abilities as well, bringing me out of the limitations of an introverted personality, to a bold lady with great communication and networking skills
In my organisation, our core values are raising generational leaders of global heroes who have the fear of God. We achieve this with constantly organizing mentorship program for the students and staff in the organization, holding constant fellowship programs, exposing the students to 21st century learning methods since it’s an educational institution.
Ethical conduct is key in my organisation which is one vital value which makes everyone in an organisation work with moral principles by constantly obeying the set down rules and regulations as humans.
Integrity is also very important..being truthful to yourself, your belief and everyone around you. Not playing eyeservice.
Our values are upheld by how we work and how we perceive others. Equality is one of which I hold in high esteem
No one is above, despite we all have our roles it’s our diversity that makes us a team and that’s what builds us. A team is a collective effect.
Compassion is a fundamental value of our organization as it enables us to overcome any unfairness and biased work outcomes. Constant communication is another priority on our organization’s list as it ensures that all employees and employers are on the same page and informed about the organization’s next steps, promoting transparency. Inclusivity is also an essential value as it ensures that all employees have equal opportunities.
Respect is one vital value which makes everyone in an organization feel appreciated as humans.
Integrity is also very important..being truthful to yourself, your belief and everyone around you. Not playing eyeservice.
Humility, dedication, integrity, Result driven, Team work.
