~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Digital skills and advancement have created a different phase in the world at large, it has created competition both online and offline but most especially online.

Major global issues such as technological advancement, increased competition, social and political changes, and environmental challenges significantly influence my organisation and the projects I am involved in.
From a technological perspective, rapid innovation is transforming the construction and project management industry. Tools such as digital project management software, Building Information Modelling (BIM), mobile reporting systems, and automated cost estimation platforms are changing how projects are planned and monitored. For a growing organisation like Ubama Solutions, adopting appropriate technology can improve efficiency, transparency, and stakeholder communication. However, it also requires continuous learning and investment to remain competitive.
In terms of competition, globalisation and market saturation mean clients now have more choices. Both established firms and informal contractors compete for the same projects. This increases pressure to deliver higher quality, better cost control, and stronger professional standards. It also highlights the importance of reputation, ethical conduct, and differentiation through value-added services such as proper project supervision and structured stakeholder engagement.
Social and political changes also have direct implications. Government policies, procurement regulations, taxation frameworks, and local content requirements can significantly affect project execution. Additionally, societal expectations around transparency, accountability, and ethical governance are rising. This means project managers must demonstrate integrity, compliance, and effective stakeholder engagement to maintain trust.
Finally, environmental issues such as climate change, sustainability expectations, and resource scarcity are increasingly shaping construction and infrastructure projects. Clients are becoming more conscious of environmental impact, waste reduction, and sustainable material use. As a project professional, this requires incorporating environmental considerations into planning, risk management, and decision-making processes.
Overall, these global factors reinforce the need for adaptability, continuous professional development, ethical leadership, and strategic thinking. For my organisation, long-term sustainability will depend on embracing technology, maintaining high ethical standards, responding to regulatory environments, and integrating environmental awareness into project delivery.

  3. I for one would say, aside, the political issues faced generally and a larger aspect of technology (social media) every other aspect of globalization has come in handy at my work space and current entrepreneur project I’m currently exploring.

Technology: We must use modern tools to stay efficient and relevant.

Competition: We have to do quality work to stand out and keep our reputation strong.

Social and political changes: Government policies and public opinion can affect our projects and funding.

Environmental issues: We must plan projects in a way that is responsible and sustainable.

  6. In the Legal profession, technology and artificial intelligence have significantly transformed the way the profession works, streamlining processes, improving accuracy, and enabling smarter decision-making. Tasks that once required extensive manual effort such as the organization of clients files and documents, filing of processes at the law courts and even virtual court sittings can now be automated, analyzed, and optimized in real time.
At the same time, technological advancements through apps like Zoom and Google Workspace have redefined collaboration. As an Operations and Programs support person, these tools have enabled me to contribute meaningfully to projects, transcending time and distance. Whether coordinating meetings, managing shared documents, or tracking deliverables across teams, technology has made it possible to provide structured, responsive, and impactful support from anywhere.

    1. Technology: Social media platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp help to reach customers easily and cheaply. It also helps to take orders online instead of physically meeting customers, easier weekend delivery coordination and better marketing.
    2. Competition: Traditional markets now compete with supermarkets and online vendors. Many small businesses are entering delivery and personal shopping services. It helps differentiate us from other brands (e.g., weekend delivery, “shikini money” affordability)
    3. social factors: Customers prefer convenience which boosts our service, Busy students/workers who demand more personal shopping, Low-income customers want cheaper options.
