Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

As a Resident Officer at the University of Lusaka (UNILUS), I’ve observed that global issues are increasingly shaping both our operational environment and the types of projects we undertake.
Technology has had a significant impact, particularly in how we manage student accommodation, communication, and service delivery. There is growing pressure to adopt digital systems for reporting maintenance issues, tracking occupancy, and improving student engagement. While this creates opportunities for efficiency, it also highlights gaps in infrastructure and digital literacy among both staff and students.
Competition within the higher education sector is also intensifying. Universities are not only competing academically but also on the quality of student experience, including accommodation and welfare services. This means projects we handle—such as improving residence facilities or enhancing student support systems—must align with higher standards to attract and retain students.
Social and political changes directly affect student behavior, expectations, and overall campus dynamics. Issues such as rising cost of living, youth unemployment, and policy changes influence students’ financial stability and well-being. As a result, we often deal with increased cases requiring conflict resolution, mental health awareness, and community building initiatives within residences.
Environmental challenges are becoming more visible in our day-to-day operations. Water supply inconsistencies and waste management are key concerns, especially in a student residence setting. This has pushed us to consider more sustainable practices, such as water conservation initiatives and improved sanitation management
I vividly remember when I joined Schooled Afrika in 2024 — it was the very same day the organisation launched its first website. The founders had invested immense effort into building an online platform that was not only seamless but also distinct from competitors.
Like many online education platforms, the target audience included parents living abroad. A lot was put in place to meet their expectations. However, the initial technical support team did not fully deliver on the proposed vision. This led to the organisation engaging a new team, resulting in additional, unplanned investment in rebuilding the platform.
Despite these challenges, one thing remained clear — backing out on the promise made to parents was never an option. The journey was not without setbacks. Some parents disengaged, and others abandoned the platform altogether, making it feel at times like the efforts had gone to waste.
However, the story has taken a remarkable turn.
Today, the new website is performing exceptionally well. It came at a crucial time, especially with new government tax policies impacting operations. Now, all sessions and payments are seamlessly managed through the platform.
More importantly, continuous improvements are being made to enhance flexibility and scalability globally — bringing students, parents, tutors, and administrators together in one unified system.
This journey has been a testament to resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering real value — no matter the challenges faced along the way.
