Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.
One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:
The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.
This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).
This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):
The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.
Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?
- Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
- Quality is an internal focus.
- Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
- The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
- Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
- Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
- Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
- Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.
Share your thoughts on these statements in the discussion section below.

The following statements are in conformance with a quality system for project delivery;
Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.
The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.
As a project manager, quality should be the first integral part of a project and it must be discussed with the stakeholders/sponsors and team member so as to achieve a quality project.
There should also be a close monitoring and communication on the team members to give their best to be able to achieve a goal of the project.
Quality should on the outlook for the best and need of the customers to provide a lasting impression of the work of the project manager and that should be discussed openly from the beginning, bearing in mind the four fundamental definitions of quality, that begins with creation of quality plan and ends with quality control.
I agree the quality statements in nos 1,3,4,5,7,and 8.
Especially no3- Quality should be considered from the begining of the project and no 5- Quality should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
Quality is giving excellence, distinction, and perfection in a given project. As a project manager, it is expedient to strive as much as possible to give excellence in any project you are to ma nag. This gives you an edge even in the labour market because people desires quality.
Quality needs to be managed throughout the complete project life cycle. That means quality management must begin right at the start of the project to be really effective. The more thought put into fitness for purpose and acceptance of the solution early in the project, the better the chances of its success.
The evolving scope of quality management
Quality thinking has evolved and quality activities have started progressively earlier. The oldest quality method, inspection, occurs late in the project life cycle. When faults are found, it is too late to prevent redesign and rework with their attendant costs and delays. Lean thinking starts quality involvement at project inception and expands the breadth of quality thinking from products through processes to people and culture – the human resources, and their value system and behaviours. This is because anything less usually causes major rework and delays towards the end of the project. The diagram below (adapted from Project Success and Quality: Balancing the Iron Triangle) shows the evolution of the different methods in stage and scope.
These are the 3 aspects to consider in order to produce quality work/results:
Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.
Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.
Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
Quality is an internal focus.
Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision
The customer’s needs should be priotized over quality, but it should be considered from the project inception. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions. Quality problem should not be concealed from customers and possible manager. Team members who are enthusiastic, interested and motivated will produce quality outcomes without close supervision

I agree with all, especially the part where the team members has to be supervised to get quality result. Also, there’s always an image to protect
Quality should form an integral part of project management, and as such should not be compromised in anyway, it should also focus on customers needs, and when executing projects quality should be a priority from the start (beginning) of the project.
