What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

  1. I strongly agree with quality should be considered at the begining of the project. Reason been that if quality is considered at the inception, it will reduce effect at the end of the project

  2. Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project- this will enable you know the type of output you will produce even from the beginning of the project
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions

  3. Cohort 9 Team 4
    I agree with these 3
    2.Quality is an internal focus.
3.Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
4.The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
Reasons been that one if the company don’t have quality in their mission statement or vision statement, then they will never go for it. Quality of a project output should be spoke of from the beginning. At the beginning is where it’s easier to begin with quality in mind.

  4. COHORT 9, Team 9

In my opinion, I think I quite agree with this, that “The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.”

In development projects, quality is ultimately defined by the beneficiary, and represents how close the project and deliverables come to meeting the beneficiaries’ requirements and expectations.

The project manager’s goal is to understand the requirements and expectations of the beneficiaries, and then ensure the project will meet those expectations.

There is a predisposition to think that quality means the most expensive material or equipment. However, in most cases, the beneficiary does not expect an expensive solution, especially if it does not meet their expectations. What they need is a solution that will solve the problem the project aimed to work out.

  5. I agreed with few points here:
    1. Quality should be focus on customer needs: From the beginning of a project to the end, quality should be at the back of the project manager and all the stakeholders, so as to have a product that will meet the customer’s needs.

    2. Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project: For a project to produce a good product at the end of operations, the quality has to be in place from the outset.

    3. Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions: without quality, any products or services will be made useless or a waste, it is better to make everyone involved in a project to know about the quality issues, so as to correct and not allow such to repeat itself again.

  6. I agree with all except number 6 which I totally disagree with, and number 8 which I partially disagree with.

  7. I agree with all the statements, except this two,
Quality problems should be hidden from customers and possibly also managers.
People are keen on producing quality outputs.

  8. For me, quality should be considered from the beginning of the project and should be all encompassing throughout the duration of the project and in day to day activities..

  9. Quality acually should be targeted towards satisfaction of the customer’s needs. This should be considered from the very beginning of the project, as it’s a critical factor to achieving qualitative end result.

  10. Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs. Agreed

Quality is focused internally. I agreed based on the company goals and objectives.

Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project. I agree.

The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets. Totally agreed

Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions. Agreed

Quality problems should be hidden from customers and possibly also managers. I disagree with this.

People are keen on producing quality outputs. Not all the time.

Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision…Partially disagree.

All of the above are to be fashioned into the PM work, some are right and some are partly right and do not occur frequently.
