Your experiences of diversity in teams (PM Course discussion)

Experts have a clear understanding of the potential advantages that diversity brings to teams and organizations.

APM acknowledges that diverse teams generally outperform homogeneous ones. This correlation is increasingly evident in the performance and financial outcomes of organizations.

Does this align with your personal experience?

In a previous section, you explored exceptional and high-performing teams. Based on your own observations, do you see a connection between diversity and performance? Do teams with greater diversity produce superior work? Additionally, what challenges arise when working in highly diverse teams?

We are genuinely interested in hearing about your experiences and thoughts regarding these questions in the discussion section.

I prefer diverse team in a project as everyone get to bring in different ideas in the project that ensure smooth success whereas homogeneous team to some extent lead to sentiment when working on a project

  2. In my experience the diversity of the teams allow for better projects short term projects with interative approach. However a homogeneous team would be better for linear projects with a blueprint of project plan.

  3. Researchers highlight the benefits of diversity in teams, noting that diverse teams often outperform homogeneous ones, enhancing organizational performance and financial results. This aligns with Agile Project Management (APM) principles.

In my experience, diverse teams bring varied viewpoints and skills, leading to creative solutions and better decision-making. However, challenges like communication barriers and differing work styles can arise. Ensuring all voices are heard and valued is crucial, requiring strong leadership and an inclusive culture.

  4. I believe diverse works better in any situation cause you get to hear every ideas and ways to approach a situations. Homogeneous sometimes ends up working with sentiments.

  5. I believe that diversity in teams yield efficient results, however the translation from the storming to the norming stage could be difficult to the extent with which there are matured minds in the team, but as soon as the storming stage is crossed the rest is history.

  6. From my experience, I’ve seen that diverse teams tend to outperform homogeneous ones. Diversity brings different perspectives, ideas, and approaches to problem-solving, leading to more innovative and effective solutions.

Diverse teams can generate more creative solutions, make better decisions, and even perform better financially. However, they can also face challenges like communication barriers, conflicts, and cultural differences.

To overcome these challenges, teams need to foster open communication, build trust and empathy, and establish clear goals and expectations. By embracing diversity and addressing potential challenges, teams can unlock the benefits of diverse perspectives and experiences, leading to superior performance and outcomes.

  7. Having the best team to achieve a given task perfectly is better than diversity.
Diversity also play a good role on getting a task done but once the team knows what to do and understand the given task with the aid of good communication and transparency diversity won’t be a problem.

  8. Having a diverse team may be challenging at first which is why it’s important to have a team building that way to break the ice. From what I’ve experienced working with different races may come challenging as they’d isolate themselves and sit as a collective, which may cause a delay in reaching the goals of the project. However on the other hand when assigned to a group in which you don’t know each other makes one more open to forming a strong team. You learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses and discuss among each other on who will do what etc etc. So I do think teams that form under circumstances and don’t know each other tend to work better and have a better chance in getting great outcomes.

  9. Having a team that has the required skills to get the job done is important regardless of the diversity.
The ideal team is to understand the assignment on the ground and get the job done. This is the type of team needed in every project. It is not to say that their diversity does not play a role, but managing that will be easy when all hands understand the goal of being there in the first place.

    1. I feel it doesn’t matter what team works together,,the most important thing is getting the Job done, and as long as there’s effective communication, transparency, diversity and allocation of specific roles to individuals who share common values, the Job will be done.

  10. Diversity has a great positive impact on project team with better results. Such as problem solving, innovations, experience from different workforce and methods of advancing the project.
However, diversity has it’s own challenge like communication barrier (language barrier) etc but with effective management both the way and means of communication, sense of belonging, proper understanding of the project and the project goal etc. These challenges can be overcome thereby resulting in an improved performance.
