Apply what you’ve learned (PM Course Discussion)

Put yourself in the role of a project manager collaborating with MTD, an events company.

Considering the difficulties and problems that MTD encounters in their projects, what insights have you gained this week that could offer assistance?

If an iterative approach were employed in organizing an event as a project, what would be the consequences? Similarly, what are the implications of adopting an agile approach? If the company sought your advice, what would you recommend?

  1. As the Project Manager for MTD Events Company, I recommend steps to help the company execute projects more effectively. These include clearly defining project goals, developing a detailed project plan, ensuring smooth communication among stakeholders, managing risks properly, and coordinating vendors efficiently. These fundamental practices create a strong foundation for successful event delivery.

To handle dynamic and unpredictable challenges, MTD should adopt iterative and agile approaches to event planning. By breaking the project into smaller phases (sprints), the team can focus on specific aspects like venue, marketing, and logistics, making it easier to adjust plans based on feedback and changing circumstances. This flexibility ensures the company can adapt to uncertainties and deliver high-quality results despite unforeseen obstacles.

Overall, using agile principles encourages flexibility, regular client feedback, and incremental progress, while empowering team members to make quick decisions and stay creative. This combined approach helps build closer relationships with clients, ensures steady delivery of each event component, and continuously improves planning and execution. Together, these methods will help MTD deliver successful projects and exceed client expectations.

    1. As a project manager I will first studies the problem and take the appropriate steps using the right method to solve the problems either the linear or iterative or both methods also use the right and convenience method to communicate either the agile or the suitable method I will just make sure the problem is solved completely and communicating with the best method

  2. Looking through the issues MTD faced in their projects,as a project manager I will use both the linear approach and the iterative approach. The linear approach to break down the event into smaller or manageable phases.for example venue selection. We will plan in smaller iteration, execute and then review the result.
Using the agile will help in communicating openly and also collaborating with the event planning team thorough daily meetings and regular feed back.

  3. As a project manager, the first step will be to identify the issues then think of a way to simplify the process by involving the various agile process of learning, creating good communication outlets amongst staff and implementing

  4. MTD can benefit from using tools like the Work Breakdown Structure, risk management, and communication planning to bring structure and clarity to De Water Banks’ event projects. Relying on intuition alone may lead to inconsistency and overlooked details, while an Agile approach focused on collaboration, flexibility, and client feedback can improve responsiveness and team performance. I’d advise combining core project management techniques with Agile practices like short planning cycles, daily check-ins, and continuous improvement to deliver more successful and adaptable events.

To the best of my knowledge,As a project manager working with MTD, after identifying the problem, the best combinations to solve any problem is using the agile and iterative methods, using agile practices for dynamic methods and for fundamental elements through iterative planning. This bring balance in unseen situations ensuring a successful project.

  6. As a project manager working with MTD, I will get information by communicating with the MTD in charge to know the challenges. After knowing the challenges, then use the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) framework tools to determine the challenges and use agile and linear approaches to solve the problem.

  7. Blending the linear and iterative approach will be good for MTD. This will help long term plans and short-term feedbacks and achievements

  8. In my current role as a Project Manager in MTD, I’ve had the opportunity to explore and apply iterative and agile project management methodologies, particularly in complex and uncertain environments. Global challenges such as rapid technological advancements, environmental crises, and evolving social dynamics significantly shape how we plan and execute projects.

The VUCA framework—Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity—has been instrumental in guiding our strategic responses. Agile methodologies, with their emphasis on continuous planning, adaptation, and feedback loops, have reinforced the importance of task prioritization, stakeholder collaboration, and organizational flexibility.

Today’s project landscape requires more than just technical expertise; it calls for a strong sense of ethical responsibility and a deep understanding of global trends. By remaining adaptable and proactive, we can transform these challenges into opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth.

  9. If I was MTD project manager and applying iterative project management to the team’s approaches will help to know ways of improving MTD services and these can be worked on.
Also mastering VUCA can help the team members to up to the tasks and know what to do whenever there’s a problem.

  10. As a Project Manager working with the MTD, after identifying the problems using the VUCA framework tool, I would suggest using both the agile and the iterative approach to help Manage complexity and uncertainties. The iterative approach gives room for adjustments and reduces risk.
