Identifying My Role’s Project Management Skills
As a Project Manager and Executive Virtual Assistant, my role requires expertise in multiple project management areas. Below is how each of the six key areas applies to my job and any potential skill gaps:
Communication – Strong communication is critical for managing clients, stakeholders, and team members. I ensure clarity in emails, reports, and meetings to keep projects on track.
Negotiation – This is essential when dealing with clients, vendors, and freelancers. I actively negotiate project scopes, timelines, and pricing, though I continue to refine my persuasion and conflict resolution skills.
Time Management – Managing multiple projects and clients requires effective prioritization. I leverage project management tools like Zoho, Trello, and Asana to streamline workflows.
Knowledge of the Regulatory Environment – In my work with businesses across different industries, I must stay informed about data protection regulations, contract laws, and industry standards. I continue to expand my knowledge in this area.
Ethics and Standards – As a virtual assistant handling sensitive business data, maintaining confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism is non-negotiable. I follow cybersecurity best practices and ethical business operations.
Continuing Professional Development – I have invested in multiple training programs, including ALX Virtual Assistant Training, Dexa Project Management Program, and Advanced Project Management Courses, to enhance my skills and stay competitive.
Action Plan for Skill Improvement:
Engage in more negotiation workshops and practical simulations.
Stay updated with regulatory changes affecting business operations globally.
Attend more industry networking events and certifications for continuous growth.
Since I am part of the DEXA PM Bootcamp, I will also share this with my group for discussion.
1. Communication is critical for clear writing, client briefs, feedback discussions, and presenting data insights.
As a copywriter, crafting words is my core skill.
2. Negotiation is important to discuss rates, project scope, and revisions.
I would need to improve on this.
3. Time Management is essential because I juggle multiple deadlines which demands strict prioritization.
I use Toggl for tracking hours and Asana for deadlines.
4. Continual Professional Development is an ongoing need because trends in SEO, AI tools, and data visualization change fast, and staying updated keeps me competitive.
I dedicate 20 hours/week to online courses.
Undertaking this course has reinforced my understanding that project management skills are universally applicable, even beyond formal projects. These skills—such as communication, negotiation, time management, regulatory awareness, ethical practices, adherence to standards, and commitment to professional development—are integral to nearly all human endeavors. While these skills are often applied unconsciously, studying and identifying them fosters self-awareness, empowering project managers to achieve objectives more intentionally.
As an electrical engineer who occasionally works as a marine engineer maintaining vessel machinery, I now recognize how project management principles provide structure to my tasks. The course has highlighted the importance of following systematic processes, such as engaging stakeholders, negotiating priorities, and managing timelines. To succeed in my role, I must also navigate regulatory frameworks, uphold industry standards, and maintain strong ethics—all of which drive me to pursue continuous professional growth. This structured approach ensures projects are completed economically, efficiently, and effectively, aligning with stakeholder expectations.
As a mathematics teacher, all 6 skills are needed.
1.Communication – Critical for explaining concepts, engaging students, and collaborating with colleagues/parents.
2.Time Management – Needed for lesson planning, grading, and balancing administrative tasks.
3. Ethics & Adherence to Standards – Ensuring fairness, academic integrity, and following curriculum guidelines.
4.Continual Professional Development – Staying updated on teaching methodologies and subject knowledge.
For me, the area for improvement is in negotiation.
1.Requesting budgets for classroom materials or technology.
2.Addressing conflicts between students, parents, or staff.
3. Advocating for changes in teaching approaches with school leadership.
Steps I’ll definitely consider to take inorder
to bridge this negotiation skill gap will be to
1. Understand others’ perspectives before responding.
2. Focus on collaborative solutions (e.g., Harvard’s principled negotiation framework).
3. Simulate parent-teacher meetings or department discussions.
4.Explore negotiation workshops or online modules.
5. Learn from school administrators or union reps during meetings by observing them.
All six skills are really needed, currently for me No4,5 and 6 are what I should focus on more.
I believe that all the 6 skills are important in every field or profession :
