Practical activity 2: Product Management Course: How does Apple create positive UX?

Let’s take a look at how Apple creates great examples of products that create positive user experiences and set the standard for similar products offered by competitors:

  • The iPhone 5 smartphone used a revolutionary design, with its all-metal case and glass front, giving users a highly usable, quality product that fulfilled the basic functions of a smartphone with the desirable features of luxury and ease of use. [1]
  • Apple’s 2012 MacBook Air set new standards for laptop aesthetics by enabling the Apple logo to light up as well as offering users the world’s slimmest laptop design at the time. It left Windows laptops playing catch-up for many years, particularly in the elements of desirable ‘look and feel’. [2]

Apple continues to ensure that creating delight for user experience is present in all its products by setting standards for product design.

Instructions: Describe a good or bad experience with Apple OR any product

Think about products that you have had a good or bad experience with and respond to the questions.

  1. Reflect on a good or bad experience you had when using an Apple product or another similar product.
  2. Post your experience in the community discussion group. Why do you think your experience was positive or negative? Provide reasons for your answer.
  3. Respond to at least one of your peers’ responses to see if anyone experienced the same as you. What do you think of their reasons?

Next, let’s take a look at how you can apply design thinking for your product design and development.

  1. My experience is with a Samsung device.

After about 7 months of usage, the phone became quite sluggish and slow and experienced more frequent app crashes after an update.

The fact that it was marketed as scratch resistant but still scratches even with careful use was annoying.

And the device accessories are most times so expensive that when your device has an issue, you would rather prefer to get a new one.

    My experience is negative because
The sluggishness after updates is particularly annoying as I expect updates to improve the experience, not degrade it.

And scratch resistant should actually mean scratch resistant not just a marketing strategy to entice customers.

  2. Apple has been able to develop a good product that really hit the market. let me use iphone as a case study,iPhone is a good initiative and is loved by the majority because of:
    Positive feedback for iphone
    1. Good camera quality
    2. Very silk and portable
    3. It’s user friendly
    4. It’s fast
    Negative feedback
    1.batter life span is poor
    2. Storage capacity
    3. Cost of purchase .
But so far Apple has been doing an incredible job with there products kudos!.

  3. My bad experience is from a Samsung home theatre i bought when i was in the university. The product was superb, everyone who came to my house wanted or liked it. But something happened, the woofer went bad and I couldn’t get it fixed or replaced not even in Samsung designated help center in the country.

  4. My experience with hp elitebook is something that I will not forget in hurry. Some years back, I needed a change of laptop, for I was on the look for a laptop that it battery can work up to 4 or even more hours without external voltage supply.

One day, I stumbled on an advert of hp elitebook and their go-to-market message was strongly centered on the durability of the battery. They went on and on describing the double-cell that characterized elitebooks which made it desirable to laptops from their competitors as well as other versions of hp. The next day, I bought myself one only to regret buying.

The double-cell they claimed in the advert that it has was a mirage, for it came with a single cell battery that doesn’t last up to 2 hours.

The processor seems to be too big for the battery and the battery life starts reducing from 2 hours if usage when fully charged to 1 hour and sometimes even less.

On 3 occasions, I bought single batteries but none lasted up to a year. My greatest pain about the laptop is that all my efforts to get a double-cell as they claimed is peculiar with all elitebook, proved abortive, so I bought single-cell battery on 3 occasions but none was able to solve the problem. So, I abandoned the laptop.

  5. I have had experience using Tecno and Infinix phones.
Tecno (it was one of these oldies), gave me a bad experience from the camera to the Operating system. With Infinix, it was no difference as sometimes, it used to turn itself off and i had to switch to Redmi which i really love. From the camera to the operating system to the storage.

  6. Samsung phone has stand ahead of other android phones because they have put in lots of work during the production and finishing stage and uses a very good quality

  7. Over time, I have not been able to use an Apple phone. My smartphones over the years have been Androids, ranging from ZTE, Infinix, and Tecno phones. From the information I gathered while making some comparison between Apple and Android, I discovered that they’re many meaningful things a user can achieve seemingly possible within a few seconds with Apple than Android.
For instant, an Infinix (Smart 7 plus HD) is used consistently for a year, you discover that it’ll begin to depreciate in value; ranging from low and poor camera capture, hanging during operation, and dullness in providing network. These are some pitfall that comes with the usage which can discourage a user.

  8. I had both a negative and positive experience using an Apple product. Let’s discuss the negative experience first. I was using an IPhone XR before, and after updating it to the latest iOS version then, it started hanging, the system process was just really slow and dissatisfying and the battery life started dropping rapidly making my battery become low so fast after charging it. The had to upgrade to a newer version.
My positive experience with an Apple product: I upgraded to an iPhone XS Max and I love the dual camera system it’s so amazing and my battery life is amazing okay even after updating to latest iOS versions for like 2-3 times now. Its performance is fast and my apps loads incredibly faster.

  9. I haven’t had any experience with Apple products but my experience with tecno products are of two ways positive and negative.
The positive aspect is the battery life is durable and long lasting but the other aspect is the OS issue very slow especially when loading or rebooting. The storage capacity is very small as well
