~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. First all, as an organization, we need to be prepared before hand about the possible way to adapt to global changes by adhering to these:
    * Employees should constantly update the knowledge in respective fields or discipline.
    * Organizations/ Firms should set up boot camp or workshop training to enhance understanding of the global changes.
    * Mechanisms can be put in place to enhance the adoption and usage of Ai.
    * Ai should be adopted as a tool to tackling insecurity and political instability.

  2. Rapid global changes impact projects through technology, trade, politics, and environmental challenges. Technological advancements demand adaptation to new tools, while global trade fluctuations and competition can disrupt supply chains and budgets. Political instability or policy changes may halt or redirect projects, while climate change and natural disasters force adjustments to designs and timelines. Stakeholders also expect sustainable and ethical practices, requiring projects to align with evolving priorities. To navigate these uncertainties, projects must embrace flexibility, robust risk management, and adaptive planning while maintaining strong stakeholder engagement to ensure they remain relevant and resilient in a rapidly changing world.

  3. Big global issues can significantly impact organizations and projects.

-For instance, emerging technology like AI can enhance efficiency and enable innovation in a project. It also come with challenges whereby, rapid technology change demands continuous upskilling and investment which can strain budgets and timelines.
-Social & political change can improve brand reputation and stakeholder trust due to the adaptation of evolving societal values but political instability and shifting societal expectations can disrupt projects.
-Environmental crisis like climate change and scarcity of resources can lead to disruptions and increased cost.

To be prepared for the complex world, we should:

-Prepare for scenarios such as political instability or tech issues and asses how they can affect projects.
    – Engage stakeholders to anticipate and manage external expectations and pressures.
-Be flexible in project processes to adapt to change quickly.
-Encourage team members to stay updated on technological trends.
-Address environmental concerns and align with global priorities.

  4. Social and Political Changes

    1. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Organizations must prioritize DEI initiatives to foster inclusive workplaces and cater to diverse customer bases.
    2. Regulatory Compliance: Staying up-to-date with changing regulations and policies is essential to avoid reputational damage and financial penalties.

    Environmental Problems

    2. Climate Change: Preparing for and responding to climate-related risks and opportunities is crucial for long-term resilience.

  5. Technological Changes

    1. Digital Transformation: Organizations must adapt to emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to remain competitive.

    Competition and Globalization

    1. Market Disruption: New entrants and innovative business models can disrupt traditional industries, forcing organizations to adapt.
    2. Global Supply Chains: Organizations must navigate complex global supply chains, managing risks and opportunities.
To address these challenges, organizations can:

    1. Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging experimentation and learning.
    2. Develop strategic partnerships, collaborating with other organizations to share knowledge and resources.

    2. It is important that we take into consideration new technology development, political and sociopolitical changes when undertaking a project as a project manager, and also getting abreast of the nature of the task ahead.

  7. Political change impacts greatly in projects in this part of the world. There is lack of long term plan to establish strong viable infrastructures that will outlive the political tenures of politicians. These stop-gaps impact negatively and hampers timely delivery of projects as well.

  8. Not All Projects deal with world or environmental issues. So if your project only affects the people around you, what complex method would you be using??

  9. Global issues affect an organization and it’s project. It is the duty of the project manager to know how these issues can affect each project.

  10. political and economic policies affects projects greatly. if the government decides to remove fuel subsidy for political and economic reasons, this may adversly affect my budget for a project and in the event where the client refuses to understand the need for more funds, delivery may not be the very best
