Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

SUNDAY OHIOMAH
Global issues can significantly impact organizations in various ways:
1. Technology: Rapid advancements can disrupt business models, create new opportunities, and require significant investments in infrastructure and training.
2. Competition: Globalization increases competition, forcing organizations to innovate, improve quality, and reduce costs.
3. Social changes: Shifts in societal values, demographics, and workforce dynamics can impact talent acquisition, customer expectations, and organizational culture.
4. Political changes: Policy changes, trade agreements, and regulatory shifts can affect market access, supply chains, and operational costs.
5. Environmental problems: Climate change, resource depletion, and sustainability concerns can impact supply chains, operations, and brand reputation.
As part of my experience working in the field of Microfinance, the impact these two memorable events (Covid-19 pandemic and the CBN cashless economic policy in 2023) had on my organization where I work was at the beginning very scary owing to the fact that we make direct contacts with different clients and for unwillingness of most rural clients to embrace the change. Many firms were forced to downsize the staff base, and some others were pushed out of business.
By being proactive and responsive to these issues, we were able to mitigate the effect of these shocks because my organization had from the foundation of her inception embraced innovation and digital transformation, monitoring and responding to geopolitical changes and social trends, engaging in sustainable practices and reducing environmental footprint and developing adaptable business strategies.
The complexity of modern project management is undeniable, especially with rapid technological advancements and global challenges. In my experience, adapting to change requires a balance between structured methodologies like the waterfall approach and the flexibility of agile methods. For instance, I’ve seen how companies adjust strategies due to economic shifts or technological disruptions. How has your organization navigated these complexities?
Each of these factors can significantly impact an organisation or project in different ways:
1. Technology
Positive Impact: Enhances efficiency, improves communication, and streamlines project management through automation, internent, and digital tools.
Negative Impact: Rapid technological changes may require frequent updates, increasing costs and training needs. Technical failures can also cause delays.
2. Competition
Positive Impact: Encourages innovation, cost-effectiveness, and quality improvements to stay ahead in the market.
Negative Impact: Intense competition can lead to resource constraints, pricing pressures, and the need for constant differentiation, which may strain organisation and project budgets and timelines.
3. Social Factors
Positive Impact: Understanding social trends and community needs ensures better project acceptance and alignment with public interests.
Negative Impact: Changing demographics, cultural differences, or resistance from local communities can delay project implementation.
4. Political Change
Positive Impact: Supportive policies and government backing can provide funding, tax benefits, or regulatory ease for projects and organisations.
Negative Impact: Political instability, policy shifts, or regulatory changes can introduce legal hurdles, delays, or even project cancellations or closure of organisations.
5. Environmental Crisis
Positive Impact: Encourages the adoption of sustainable practices and green solutions, making projects and organisations more eco-friendly.
Negative Impact: Natural disasters, climate change, and resource scarcity can disrupt supply chains, increase costs, for organisations and delay project execution.
My organization is based in Nigeria, and we rely on imported equipment and resources. Because of global changes in technology, competition, politics, and the environment, the cost of these imports keeps rising. Things like exchange rate fluctuations, supply chain delays, and inflation make it harder to get what we need at a good price.
Technology is advancing fast, but access to the latest tools is really expensive. Political and social changes in other countries also affect trade and resource availability.
These challenges mean we have to adapt, find cost-effective
alternatives, and stay innovative to keep up.
Global issues such as technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis has positive and negative effects on my organization and also our projects. Rapid rate of technological advancements has created opportunities and challenges as there is an increasing need for us to stay updated on new and emerging technologies, adapt to new project processes and also manage the cybersecurity risks it may pose.
Globalization has intensified competition and has forced my organization to constantly encourage innovation and collaborations that helps us deliver value faster and also optimize operations using resources available to us. Notwithstanding, the social and political change globally has increasingly affected clients behavior, regulatory framework and practice guiding our organizational practices, and also affected our projects feasibility which has led to several project adjustments to ensure continuity and success. Environmental crisis despite increasing concerns in society is yet to affect our organization significantly.
Technological advancement is one of the major ways a project manager ups her services.
As a project manager be willing to make and effect change when need be. And most importantly use the changes to impact your project positively. The implementation of new strategies keep the company active and more efficient.
Political change/ technology improvements is a key way a pm to improve services, as a PM when changes occurs you have to adapt and work with it to enable a good timeline and most importantly use the changes to impact your project positively while communicating to the team and stakeholders the importance of applying the new changes and it’s effect .
Technology affect more companies. For example for a company specialised in delivering services, clients will go after a company which has developped digitalisation rather than for a company which still work manually because this affect more quality and rapidity. This bring companies implement new stratégies to be more updated and competitive on the market
The world currently is experiencing information overload, through Technology, Social Media , strong competition, environmental interference s etc. Thereby, leaving organzsation to carve their niche by thinking outside the box and developing a Unique Selling Point to stand out. However, organizations should develop problem solving ideas as well as maintaining creativity and Innovation to withstand waterfalls amidst competition .This sustains organizational relevance and preference
Technology has contributed to most of the change the world is experiencing.Everyday I’m striving to keep up in other not to be left out in the competition. Environmental crises my business has faced is insecurity, most of our strategies to move the business forward has been hindered due to insecurity.
Taking about environmental crisis, i will dwell more on insecurity.
This has been a hindrance in enabling us achieve one of our objective.
Our program focuses on increasing primary health care service utilization in rural communities. Insecurity leads to low service utilization thereby affecting the over all goal of the program
