~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Working with my service company, we have to put alot in place particularly with respect to social and environmental issues. Issues such as oil spillage which is a major problem in Niger Delta are things we look out for. We thereby strive to design systems to prevent it, properly test field equipments e.g valves to prevent failure while it’s installed in the line. We also work on embedded system design combining artificial intelligence to give our clients smooth and up to date technology products.

  2. Global issues like competition, technological improvement/advancement, political changes and environmental crisis may have great impact on my organic and how projects are managed. Most times it could hinder the completion of projects

  3. The listed factors can affect my project in either a positive or negative way; I may be planning on doing a project and the newly launched technology may just be the perfect tool I needed to make the Project a success. While on the other hand, after careful planning of project as been done, a new government law may be passed which do not favor my project and for that reason my project will be terminated.

  4. With teaching for example, global trends require integrating digital tools like WhatsApp and using innovative methods such as project-based learning. This means using different teaching strategies and embracing technology, in creating engaging, future-ready learning environments.

  5. Global issues such as technological advancement, increasing competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis can significantly impact my organization and the way projects are managed. As a Project Manager, rapid technological advancement requires continuous professional development to stay current with emerging tools, systems, and best practices that enhance project efficiency and delivery.

Global competition increases expectations for performance, quality, and timely delivery, which places greater responsibility on project teams to perform effectively under pressure while maintaining high standards. Social and political changes also require strong negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills to navigate evolving policies, community dynamics, and institutional priorities.

Additionally, environmental changes may require projects to adapt their design, implementation strategies, and sustainability considerations to align with new environmental realities and regulations.

Rapid technological change pushes projects to adapt quickly and manage new risks, while global competition increases pressure to deliver p[projects faster, cheaper, and with higher quality. social changes affect workforce expectations and stakeholder needs, requiring strong communication and change management, while political and regulatory changes can cause delays, added cost or compliance risk.

  7. As a teacher in Nigeria, these global trends impact projects like:
Technology: Blended learning and digital tools can boost engagement (e.g., using WhatsApp for assignments).
Competition : Differentiating learning experiences (e.g., project-based learning) keeps students ahead.
So, this means adapting teaching methods, leveraging tech, and fostering critical thinking.
