~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Political change..
Politics has played a vital role in businesses e.g regional laws and regulations can determine how a company operates or whether it benefits from international expansion.for this reason aspiring entrepreneurs, business leaders and strategies in heavily regulated industries should familiarize themselves with politics effects on business.. government role in businesses can’t be overemphasised
    Some of the roles include
    Protecting citizens from external harm
    Protecting citizens from internal threats
    Protecting property rights
    Creating means of resolving disputes.
How government fulfill these responsibilities significantly has impacted my business..for instance to protect citizens well being and guarantee a living wage government had impose a base pay requirements(minimum wage) this is a motivation for me and the workers by enabling them to put more effort in their work..the workers won’t think of embezzling management or business funds..

  2. Global issues profoundly impact insurance organizations and their projects. Technological advancements introduce both opportunities and challenges, influencing how insurers assess risks, underwrite policies, and engage with customers. Intense competition requires constant innovation in products and services to stay relevant. Social and political changes can alter regulatory landscapes, affecting compliance and market dynamics. Environmental crises, such as climate change, pose substantial risks, as insurers must navigate increased claims related to extreme weather events. Additionally, societal shifts may impact the insurability of certain assets. Adapting to these multifaceted challenges demands agility, robust risk modeling, and strategic foresight to ensure insurance projects remain resilient and aligned with evolving global realities.

  3. Our understanding and response as project managers to complexities caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental crisis may have advantages and disadvantages.

As project managers we need to be open and ready face to changes because change will happen weather we are ready for it or not and complexity caused by new technologies and worldwide competition as caused many companies to network easily, work remotely, have real-time access to information while facilitating communication, it has also improve the quality and quantity of trade and help organizational structures and innovation. The pros of these events are many, however these complexities have also caused some disadvantages. Taking decision during environmental crisis, social and political complexities use to be very difficult for project managers because these complexities may influence our project negatively and sometimes caused us to shut down the project. The lack of energy (electricity) and multiple government reforms and political complexities have made many organizations to fold up in Nigeria. the case of P&G a FMCG that shut down is plant at Agbara a year after it was opened in 2017

I find the rapid global changes currently experienced quite exciting. It has enabled a more competitive environment in the global business sector. Organizations can now access foreign projects and in some cases, executive them without leaving their place of domicile. This situation has benefited my organization, providing us with a wither range of clients both local and international.
However, social and political crisis in the country resulting from establishment of insensitive policies by government and it’s elements, as well as unfavorable environmental changes in the country, has adversely affected the organization. Foreign organizations located that required our services are relocating out of reach as a result of the above listed harsh changes. While that is true, the situation also creates the opportunity for organizations (where such crises are at a higher degree) to reach out to foreign partnership, and that becomes an advantage for organizations properly positioned for such opportunities.

  6. Technology has changed a lot of things and how they’re done in the fashion industry, invention of new and modern equipment have made design and garment construction different and exciting. To name just an aspect.

Social changes: has impacted fashion world, the increasing social functions such as fashion shows, weddings, etc demand new design invention. Everyone wants to look different and elegant.

Competition: in fashion, there are lots and lots of competitions which can not be done away with infact, competitions make us a better and best version of our brand because, we’d always want to be ahead of our competitors in delivering quality while making profit.

Political changes: is doing more harm than good with all sorts of policies (new&old) that are negatively affecting businesses.

  7. In my organization Technology has been very helpful but lately, we discovered many of our staff spend excessive time on phones and computers chatting with friends and watching movies or comedy shows when they are supposed to be working, it slow down our operations and reduced our production some couldn’t meet their monthly target.
Competition: Our competitor in Northern Nigeria where we had a branch last year set a prices that force us to shutdown our operations in that area because the prices where extremely low that our organization can’t compete with.

Political change : There was an upward review in minimum wage by the government and we had Revenue shortfalls, so we had to layoffs and downsize.

  8. In my organisation, technology has really done a more positive impact in project management rather than a negative one, it’s allows team members work remotely thereby minimising the high cost of transportation cause by political changes in the country, also bridging the gap between our fellow competitors in the industry. This allows my team to avoid lots of environmental crisis because no matter the environmental crisis, technology helps my team to work remotely and deliver our project within the speculated time frame.

  9. considering these global issues is an important part of the job. It’s important to understand how these issues can impact the organization and the projects I’m involved in, and how to best mitigate any risks or take advantage of any opportunities. For example, in terms of technology, it’s important to keep up to date with the latest advancements and consider how they can be implemented in projects to improve efficiency and effectiveness. In terms of competition, it’s important to stay informed about what competitors are doing and how to stay ahead of the curve.
social and political changes are important to consider when in an organization. For example, a political change, such as a new government being elected, can impact laws and regulations that the organization has to comply with. In terms of social changes, things like shifting demographics or social values can influence customer demand and what products and services are in demand. Finally, environmental issues, such as climate change, can have a significant impact on operations and project planning. For example, an organization may need to factor in the increased cost of energy and water or consider the impact of natural disasters.
