Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

As an Engineering firm, technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems are key issues to look into and put into consideration.
The emergence of new technologies in the global market is something that must be seriously put into consideration. The advancements in modern technology concerning some of the materials we use for our project are one thing we consider. Again, getting some local materials that meet international standards is evolving and we take absolute care in ensuring these issues are considered in the course of implementing our projects.
Due to the emergence and advancement in modern technology, the global market has become where the strong ones can only survive with the best technology that suits customers, hence the market is competitive.
Social and political changes also affect the market. Some policies being dished out by the government have affected the market. To mention again is environmental problems.
These are some of the things that affect the market but for the industry and companies to strive and still continue in business, they must adopt certain policies, swift strategic planning, good governance and strategic engagement of the stakeholders to ensure customer satisfaction and successful project execution.

Global issues like environmental problems have led to migration and advancement in science and technology on how to know when a disruption is about to happen and escaping to safety.
Migration has led to improved standards of living and Increasing employment opportunities across borders.
Even though I happen to fall in the latter set of Virtual Administrative Assistants, I still come across stories and shared experiences from industry experts talking about how the introduction of remote workspace affected them, how weird it was at first, and how it took lots of learning before they began to adapt to the social change that had happened.
From what I have observed from them, technology was at the forefront of it all and this was because the rapid technological advancements required them to stay updated with the latest software and tools that enhance productivity and efficiency. And as administrative assistants, this meant continuous learning and adaptation to new systems like advanced scheduling tools, project management software, and communication platforms.
Also, they started to practice social values like inclusivity and diversity more and these in turn affected the impact of their projects whether personal or organizational.
1. Technology also has positive and negative environmental effects. The positive effects are recycling of wastes, reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, and renewable energy production. The negative effects include depletion of natural resources, air pollution, and accumulation of wastes.
2. Competition is important in business because it helps keep businesses on their toes. It makes them strive to develop cutting-edge products and services that are suited to their customers and gives them a marketplace advantage. Businesses with competitors know they need to work hard to maintain their customer base.
3. Political decisions, including policy changes, trade regulations, and government incentives, have a direct impact on organizations’ operations and growth prospects. For example, a shift in trade policies can disrupt global supply chains and affect international businesses
4. Factors like coastal flooding can have a major impact on businesses, leading to operational disruption and losses for organizations. Climate change can also create a higher demand for energy as the temperatures get warmer and there is a higher demand for air conditioning use.
I work for an Entertainment firm, in the music section of the industry.
Firstly, Competition as a global issue impacts my firm positively and negatively. On the positive side, it keeps us checked, ensuring that we stay aware that we aren’t the only firm in the Entertainment industry. This fact has been a major push in the firm. we make sure our deliveries are outstandingly great and unopposely accepted in the society. The competition keeps us on our toes, having to know there are rivals, we tend to do extra on every project and delivery. On the negative side, competition has compromised the cost of services in the entertainment industry. Rivals tend to bring down the cost of their services to give the clients the option of standard service, this in return affects the rate at which projects are contracted.
Technology is another global issue. The gadgets we use in the entertainment industry have been upgraded in recent times and some of those gadgets aren’t affordable. This unaffordability has reduced the productivity of the firm in terms of successful delivery of standards compared to other firms that can afford those gadgets. The introduction of new gadgets isn’t the issue but the affordability of the technology is the major issue.
Social and political issues are major global issues. Social issues happen in the sense that there are trends in society that can improve the portfolio of a firm in the same order there are trends that can damage the reputation of a firm. This phenomenon is one my firm tends to analyze critically before embarking on any project. Political issues on the other hand are quite difficult to handle because the laws are made and amended in intervals by the lawmakers, which sometimes affects the firm positively or negatively. In this regard, my firm tends to embark on projects based on the current societal and political law and order.
Our society is changing as the days go by. Globalization and environmental factors affect the way projects are carried out. Technological innovations and new discoveries, social realignment and new values tend to inform projects formulations. More so, social media has become the new gate setter on topical and trendy narratives that could impact project management.
Global issues such as technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems shape project planning, execution, and outcomes in several critical ways.
Technological advancements play a significant role in enhancing efficiency and accuracy. BIM, for instance, facilitates detailed planning and collaboration through 3D modelling, reducing errors and improving project management. Automation and robotics streamline repetitive tasks and enhance precision, while smart construction materials like self-healing concrete and embedded sensors improve durability and maintenance. Additionally, drones and wearables aid in site surveys and worker safety monitoring, and artificial intelligence and data analytics optimise project management through predictive insights.
Global competition introduces challenges such as supply chain disruptions, which can lead to material shortages and increased costs. To mitigate these risks, construction firms need to diversify suppliers and adopt just-in-time inventory practices. The necessity of adhering to international standards and codes requires flexibility and thorough knowledge of varying regulations. Competitive pressures drive the need for continuous innovation, cost-efficiency, and quality improvement.
Social and political changes impact labour availability and regulatory environments. Shifts in immigration policies and workforce demographics can create labour market fluctuations, necessitating training programmes and attractive working conditions to secure skilled labour. Urbanisation demands increased infrastructure and housing, while community engagement becomes essential for project acceptance and smooth execution.
Environmental concerns push the industry towards sustainable building practices, climate change adaptation, and efficient waste management. There is a growing demand for green buildings and energy-efficient designs, and stricter environmental regulations require adherence to standards on emissions, waste disposal, and resource use.
Overall, the construction industry must adapt to these global challenges through strategic planning, technological adoption, sustainable practices, and robust stakeholder engagement to ensure successful project outcomes and long-term viability.
Technology has really been of great help in my field because it has helped us to discharge our duties very well and fast.
But social and political changes in my country has made things so difficult that one cannot be able to access some gadget in manufacturing process because of the hike in price of goods.
