Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

Technology has revolutionized project management by introducing tools and platforms that enhance productivity, communication, and collaboration. From project management software like Asana and Trello to advanced AI tools for data analysis and automation, technology streamlines processes, reduces errors, and ensures efficient resource allocation. However, it requires careful integration and constant updates to adapt to emerging innovations and avoid obsolescence.
In Project Management, Competition drives teams to deliver quality outcomes efficiently and innovatively. Organizations must strive to outperform competitors by adopting best practices, fostering innovation, and meeting stakeholder expectations. This competitive edge often necessitates the use of advanced methodologies like Agile and Lean, encouraging continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
Social and Political Changes directly influence project priorities, funding, and execution. For instance, shifts in government policies, regulatory requirements, or societal values can impact project goals or timelines. Effective project managers must remain adaptable, ensuring that their projects align with current political and social climates. Addressing issues like diversity, inclusion, and sustainability has become a core consideration in modern project management.
Environmental Crisis the global environmental crisis has pushed sustainability to the forefront of project management. Projects now frequently incorporate eco-friendly practices, such as reducing waste, conserving resources, and prioritizing renewable energy. Additionally, managers must evaluate the environmental impact of their projects and align with sustainability goals to address climate change, pollution, and other ecological concerns. This not only fulfills ethical responsibilities but also meets growing stakeholder demands for green initiatives.
As a project manager, environmental factors affect the operations. They range from factors like economic factors, technological factors, social factors. In a complex world, adaptation is needed.
Technology has reshaped project management, making it more efficient, collaborative, and data-driven. In an increasingly competitive business landscape, embracing technology is not just an option; it’s a necessity. By integrating the latest advancements in project management .
As a project manager, thinking about complexity is crucial. Here are some thoughts:
Understanding Complexity
Managing Complexity:
1. Break down complex tasks into manageable chunks.
2. Identify and prioritize critical components.
3. Develop flexible plans and adapt to changes.
4. Foster open communication and collaboration.
5. Monitor and respond to emerging issues.
I currently work in an IT firm that provides E-law Reports for Lawyers & the likes. The law reports have made reporting research easy for these Lawyers, & it has in turn made us go further to provide the users with AI, to further fasten their research, & with ease.
I currently manage a store application where users can buy & renew these law reports.
The users request for use-of-ease has recently made me & my team rebuild a better store application for our users.
Managing projects in a complex world is directly proportional to our understanding and response to complexity. In the changing world that we are, we get to adapt in order to adequately succeed in managing and successful delivery of projects.
Global issues, such as technological innovations/advancement, competitions, social & political changes and environmental problems have actually impact our organization and projects in diverse ways.
a). The use of social platforms such as Meet, Zoom, Whatsapps, Telegraph etc which technological innovations and researches brought about has in no small way contributes to the effective project management and successful project delivery. The risk of travelling to attend site and sometimes stakeholders meetings have been eliminated.
b). Improved quality of materials and features has made room for competition
c). Political changes brought about by changing in government and government policies has greatly impact on project management & delivery.
d). Environmental challenges such as climate change (global warming), flooding, land slide/earth quake.
e). Economic instability is a key factor that greatly affects project management and delivery
Global issues such as technological, social, political, health and environmental usually impact and shape institutions and organisations and of cause their mode of operation in very significant ways forcing them to adapt to changes around them.During competitions, technological advancement has made it possible for results to be available to all and in real time. It has also created room for more innovations geared towards better project management, resource management and time management to to innovate,
Technology has in no small way be of help to especially those who have taken up the role of being digital.
Personally, I’ve experienced first hand how you can be in your personal space and create solutions or solve problems which could at the end of the day yield meaningful results.
Speaking about competition, technology has made it so that numbers and results are visible to all. And these, in most cases has led to positive and negative competition amongst individuals in an organisation or among organisations of same interests. Whilst competition helps us grow and sometimes keeps us in check, it is very important that a healthy competitive habit is nurtured.
Global issues such as technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis significantly shape schools and their projects in many ways compelling them to innovate, invest in resilience, and strategically manage resources to adapt to a changing world.
Technology has a great impact in my organization. There’s the possibility to reach a wider audience, easier ways to collate data and digital ways of record keeping. Political changes can affect organisations in terms of new policies which could have either a positive or negative impact.
In my organization,to navigate complexity and deliver successful projects,we constantly adapt to social changes, upgrade skills and tools to remain competitive and adjust our policies for social expectations and welcome sustainable practices.
The current policy on energy and economy in Nigeria has adversely affected every project but we adapt and forge ahead – there must always be a way.
