What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.

  6. Quality should be considered right from the inception of a project. The stakeholders and customers are the reason for the project so their needs and expectations must be met. To achieve this,a quality plan should be drawn, discussed and decision reached on the project quality. 8. Quality assurance must be part of a project plan right from the onset. All along the line of developing and executing the project, quality must be understood, maintained and enforced by all members of the team and especially the project manager. Customers or stakeholder needs is the reason why the project is being carried out so their expectations should be met precisely to ensure satisfaction. Any issues arising from this must be discussed openly and immediately so that it doesn’t necessarily affect the project timeline and structure negatively.

For genuine consideration, it is imperative to embrace quality from its earliest stages, as this promotes fruitful teamwork and extracts maximum value from the project.

    1. Quality has to do with the content of a service or product.
The standard of a product or service should start from the inception of the project, as a team, you should have key deliverables that the project intends to handle because these deliverables will contribute to making it customer based and tailor made for the targeted customers.
Quality means standard of a service or product.
