What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. A quality plan helps the stakeholders and top-level management check the progress of a project. It (quality plan) determines the scope of what’s going to be measured and what metrics will define whether the project is successful, which makes it easy for stakeholders to analyse the performance of a project.

Quality is the first priority of every good project management team.

The importance of quality management in project management cannot be overstated. Effective project quality management ensures that your team consistently delivers quality products and services. Your customers will take notice and continue to rely on you for transparent, efficient, and quality work.

Quality management helps companies improve their products’ reliability, durability and performance. These factors help differentiate a business from its competitors. Better products equal happier customers and higher revenue.

    1. Quality cannot just be defined in the light of customer satisfaction alone. This is because there are unusual situations whereby customers request for low quality output because of their inability to afford the cost of high quality output. Quality problems must be openly discussed not hidden. Otherwise it will affect the integrity of the project team in the future.
Quality must be considered right from the beginning of a project, not just in the latter stages.

  2. 1. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.

  4. I agree with the following :
Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.
    Quality is focused internally.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

  5. Priority should be given to the quality of products or services. Most customers are willing and ready to pay to get quality services.

  6. When it comes to quality, focusing on the customer’s needs is paramount. Quality should be defined by what meets and exceeds the customers’ expectations, not just what we think is “good enough” internally. With this customer-centric view of quality in mind, I believe the following statements:

Quality should be considered from the very beginning of any project. Planning, design, and development phases set the stage for achieving high quality. Shortcuts and oversights early on make quality harder to achieve later.

Quality issues should always be discussed openly with the goal of finding corrective actions that improve outcomes for stakeholders. Hiding quality problems never solves them in the long run. Transparency builds trust with customers and shows a commitment to continuous improvement.

People generally want to take pride in their work and produce quality outputs. With proper training, resources, and motivation, team members will rise to the challenge of delivering high quality when given the right support and accountability structures. Close supervision alone is not enough to produce quality work over the long term.

  7. Quality is considered fit for for use.
The quality of a project or materials is determined by the end users

    1. Due to the massive competition out there, I believe that before one could open up any business Quality should be considered.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of any given project both internally and externally and it should be priority

  8. Quality is a holistic approach that aims at delivering value, customer satisfaction, and excellence in all aspects of a project or services. however, it is important to view quality from a projected perception of achieving a quality goal of a project or service. the interest of the customers and employees are important to have a quality and successful project execution.

  9. It is a holistic approach that aims to deliver value, customer satisfaction, and excellence in all aspects of a product, service, or process.

Quality should be a priority cos that’s what will keep the integrity of a company thereby making a recommendations for them in future. lets take for example, a company like ‘Julius Berger’ known for constructing of civil structures have taken extra care in attending to ‘little details’ when setting up for construction site, what a lay man will overlook and call it ‘little’ is what they have detailed right from the blue print down to the main action o site, this is what has distinguished them amongst others in the field of construction. A project manager will not just consider quality also they will make it a priority in order to become excellent.
