What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

  1. I agree that quality should be considered from the beginning of the project and it should be based on what the customer wants/needs.

  2. Quality are a group of teams bringing heads, idea, being faithful to each other in other to achieve the same goals in a specific time frame and attain the same aims in a particular project.
You make quality plan by making proper communication with your project team on the scope and expected outcome on the part of the client

  3. I agree that:
    1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
    2. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
    3. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.

  4. Quality should be considered at the beginning of a project.

It should be focused on the customer’s needs.

Quality should be discussed openly to discuss the corrective measures.

  5. Quality should be considered before the inception of the project. Quality standards should be set, and then principles should be followed all through the life-cycle of the project. Quality assurance and quality control are also very important in the execution phase as well as the delivery phase.

  6. I agree that :
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.
The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieving quality targets.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to identify corrective measures

  7. Quality should be considered from the beginning of a project. As a project manager quality should be what you look at when going about your project. It’s a good character that will leave you a good name/goodwill, people will recommend you to other when they relaise the quality in your work. With all the collaboration, effective communication and team work;quality is what comes out from such togetherness

  8. Achieving quality in any given project is very important, although it can be affected by certain factors.

From the given points on quality, I agree to the fact that:
    1. Quality should be considered from the inception of the project. This helps in guiding the scope, project plan, recruiting expertise or skills needed.
    2. Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective measures. In this, everyone becomes aware if the quality at any point is being compromised and steps back to find the loophole and as well put heads together to find a solution so the project can continue and be delivered in the best form.
    3. Not all team members or groups need close supervision to achieve quality outputs. There are people who are inefficient when being supervised closely or put under pressure but then it is the project manager who knows the kind of members in his team, so should know how best to handle them(with or without supervision).
    4. If quality problems are been hidden from the customers or even managers, finding a solution will be difficult esp. if the cause of the less quality is from the resources (finance, labour) put down for the project.
    5. Every phase of a project is very important in achieving quality target. I believe that execution phase is not the most important, the planning phase is the most important to achieving quality. It is at this planning phase that you organize and put every information, skill, resources in place. At execution, everything is already set and you are just doing the work with what you have down.
    6. As mush as quality focuses on customer’s need, keeping up the reputation of the organization handling the project matters.

  9. I agree with the statement on quality

Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

Quality should always get a feedback

Quality should be considered by the customers.

  10. Speaking from a marketers point of view, quality should be focused on a the standard of the fragment of the market which the project or product is meant for. The product will never satisfy everyone’s taste so the people which the project was designed to focus on determines the quality. If for example it’s the masses, then a low quality for cheaper price or if it’s the elites a higher quality which will come at a higher cost.
