What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

1 agree that the following statements are true about quality and what it stands for.

    1. I think quality of a project and product should be focused internally and not based on individual consumer. This will help the Team to set up a standard that will suit or meet up to the average standard quality of a product.

  2. Quality:
Is a key component in determining the success of a project. Every organization that requires an impressive output will usually want quality, but the determinant of that is how much they are willing to pay to get quality.
Most importantly, quality in relationship to budget must be discussed with the client before project execution.

I agree with all the points above except no. 6 and 7 which I removed from my points.

  8. As far as quality is concerned and as far as i was mentioned in the begining of this week’s lesson, quality is a notion that may fails to consider and focus on whil implementimg a project. While it’s both internal and external attributs of a product/ service to respond to a given need or to satisfy a given number of criteria (norms), many will only focus on delivable without taking into account how well thse re in conformiy with starndars.

It is better to define all the aspects (internal and external quality traits) of all expected delivables at the beginning of the project and set them as verifiable objective indicators (VOI) and communicate them to all stateholders so that their monitoing become easy.

  9. In my view;
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the Projects. Customers needs should be paramount too
