What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

  2. When we talk about quality, we’re referring to how good or excellent something is in terms of meeting expectations and standards. It’s all about the level of excellence or superiority in a product, service, or experience. So, it’s basically about how well something is made or performed and if there’s changes how often do we discuss to find solutions inorder to achieve the required level of quality needed

  4. Quality should be the watch word at the beginning of every project. While the idea of getting the job done and within the stipulated time is considered, quality is key to ensuring the success of the project.

  5. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision simply because they are focused on getting the work done within agreed timeline. Be that as it may, the required supervision of the inputs of each team member should be the project manager’s responsibility for the expected quality of outputs to be delivered in the end.

    1. As much as i strongly believe that clients have their opinion when it comes to the issue of quality, therefore, i believer even stronger that quality should be an major factor that serves as a motivation for the project. when quality becomes a trade mark of an institution or even individual project executors, the clients or customer will be relaxed in dealing with such entity.
take for instance, the premium that people place on Apple products is as a result of details to unique qualities which they possess. and anyone can comfortably take an Apple phone and wont be bothered so mush as the theft of it despite the cost, becaue of its internal quality policies.
quality for me goes beyond just the outcome or deliverables but it stands tall as a legacy when carefully built over the years.

    2. I agree with the opinion that quality should meet customers needs because customers are the major reasons why the producer took time and cost for production of goods and service.

I am still of the opinion that project managers should invest quality time, resources, and energy in producing a project that will meet the clients taste.

Every client has his own taste, and resource for the project will be allocated base on his taste, so this require the project manager to make good use of it in the production of a tasteful projects that meets the clients standards.

  6. At the beginning of each projects, quality should be emphasized and discussion about quality issues should be open

  7. It is important to always bear in mind the quality of a project every step of the way. This is why it’s not a one man shoe but a team is required to ensure that the best result or deliverables or output is derived at the end.
Quality should prioritize the customers’ needs. It should be considered from the project’s inception till the final result is derived. This means Quality must be considered every step of the way. It should also be discussed to identify early corrective actions and implement them.
Since individuals are enthusiastic about producing high quality outcomes there shouldn’t be quality problems at the end cos I believe that each step will be tested and verified to check and combact promptly any poor quality deliverables of the project.

  8. I agree to the following statements about quality
*Quality should prioritize the customers needs because they are the reason why the project is carried out in the first place and their requirements is what would shape the project’s output.
*Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions. By discussing about quality issues, various team members can contribute which will enable them produce better results.

  9. Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

  10. prioritizing customer needs is paramount in ensuring project quality, as the standards and requirements set by customers shape the project outputs. Quality, inherently, demands an internal focus where all resources and processes are optimized to enhance project performance.

While the execution stage plays a crucial role, it’s crucial to recognize that the foundation for quality is laid during the planning phase. By initially prioritizing quality, not only are project costs impacted, but the overall success of the project is also influenced significantly.

Maintaining accountability and transparency is imperative in addressing quality issues. Open discussions with stakeholders, rather than concealing problems, facilitate prompt corrective actions to align the project with expected requirements.

Despite the initial enthusiasm of team members, sustaining motivation throughout the project is a challenge. Project managers bear the responsibility of ensuring continuous motivation and commitment to delivering the expected project output.

Supervision of team members is essential, supported by metrics that track their efforts towards achieving project objectives. This proactive approach ensures alignment with project goals and enhances overall project quality.

    1. I resonate with quality should be built from the beginning of a project to the end of a project through a standardized quality control system which will bring about quality assurance for optimum customer satisfaction and this will result to a legacy of goodwill for such an organization and the PMs involved.
