What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.

  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

  1. I think quality should be considered or discussed from the beginning of the project so that all team members will know and quality problems should not be hidden from manager.

  2. Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs but not focused only internally. It should be considered from the beginning of the project and not just limited to the execution phase but on all phases and needs to be discussed openly in some cases to find corrective actions but not always should it be discussed amongst stakeholders to avoid panic. This goes to show the eagerness of some people in producing quality outputs making whoever that is passionate about quality output work without close supervision.

  3. Quality is one very important aspect of a product, therefore there shouldn’t be a compromise on it.
I do agree with the First 5 points on quality… But disagree with the last 3 points…
You cant hid things that would affect both the producers and consumers you would stand to loss alot, trust and money as project manager, and yes not everyone wants to produce quality product but as a project manager you determine what you need from your team… And as a project manager you already know your teams capacity to know if they need to be supervised or not but if there is a proper communication within there will sure be less supervision.

    1. Although quality is supposed to be focused on the customer’s needs, it is also very important that quality should be considered from the very beginning of the project
