What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

  8. Quality is part of the 3- triangle constrains (Time, Cost, and Quality). This should be defined from the inception of the project through brainstorming with the stakeholders. Also, be planned in the Quality management and monitored through out the execution of the project.

  9. I want to agree with the following;

    1. Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.

    Most times what customers need should drive quality. Quality management principles focuses on customers. customers are fundamental to any organisation and therefore there is need to understand the importance of achieving quality hence customer focus. Most successful organisations focuses on quality. Hence, there must be an unwavering focus on the customer and the customer experience with their products and services.

    2. Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

    There is need for the project team to keep quality discourse open and keenly discussed.

    3. People are keen on producing quality outputs.

    Project team ought to take issues of producing quality outputs very seriously. Quality products help to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty and reduce the risk and cost of replacing faulty goods. Quality reflects on your company’s reputation. If your business consistently delivers what it promises, your customers are much more likely to sing your praises. Poor quality or product failure that results in a product recall campaign can lead to negative publicity and damage your reputation.

    4. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

    Good supervision can inspire employees and keep them focused on company goals. However, there can still be good quality outcome with minima supervisor if the team member are good in what they do. Minimizing the amount of supervision can sometimes improve performance. When employees are monitored too tightly, it can leave them feeling frustrated and cramped at work. Good motivation comes from giving a particular team the supervision they need. An employee who’s been handed their first major project may feel happier and more motivated if they know the manager is watching closely, ready to provide a course correction if needed. For more experienced employees in the same situation, it’s often frustrating.
