Diverse teams often outperform homogeneous ones across several metrics, including financial returns, innovation, and employee satisfaction. A combination of difference perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds fosters more creative problem-solving and adaptive thinking. This is valuable in understanding and addressing the needs of a global customer base. Diverse teams are also shown to make decisions faster and with better outcomes, likely because they can evaluate a problem from multiple viewpoints, minimizing blind spots.
There are challenges in diverse teams, communication barriers and differences in cultural background can prolong decision-making and reaching an agreement.
I have always enjoy building team with a diversity mindset. This experience has helped me to understand that diversity can certainly have a positive impact on my team performance. When teams are composed of individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, they can bring a wider range of ideas and approaches to problem-solving. This can lead to more innovative solutions and better decision-making.
However, diversity can also present challenges. Differences in communication styles, cultural norms, and work habits can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. It’s important to establish open communication channels, foster mutual respect, and create a culture of inclusivity to overcome these challenges. This takes time but has helped me eventually get along with the entire team.
Ultimately, the impact of diversity on team performance depends on how well the team is able to leverage its differences. Effective leadership, clear communication, and a shared sense of purpose can help diverse teams to thrive and achieve exceptional results.

In situations where regulatory of safety requirements are important, it is important to consider other success criteria other than the iron Triangle.
Applying what I have learned to the MTD case study
As PM, if I take on a project and the team had to be assembled for me to work with, this will undoubtedly put me under some pressure. When I consider the output and outcome of the project, but do not have the team with the right mix of skills, I’d be under pressure to make the best out of what I have been given.
To guard against stress, I will encourage team members to work in a healthy and sustainable way. I will motivate the team by creating the conditions to collaborate in a respectful manner and maintain team cohesion. This will foster an environment where mental health of team members is improved, and pressure is reduced.
Developing the team
A Project Manager must encourage and motivate individual team members to be the best they can be. By getting to know them personally, supporting them to grow and showing empathy amongst others, he or she can motivate the team.
Some of the advantages of assigning tasks to inexperience team member include opportunity for development, higher level of confidence and accountability.
The disadvantages are discrepancies in the quality of work, low team morale and missed timelines.
From experience, teams with more diversity tend to perform better overall on projects. Pulling individuals from different background, experience and values can only enhance the overall prospect of the team to deliver on the project, as they tend to solve problems faster and better and are able to produce more innovative ideas. Team morale will be high, as members collaborate and learn from each other during the project lifecycle.
However, there may be times that this advantage will become a disadvantage. Overtime, team members may become less cohesive, suspicious, competitive or jealous of each other, thereby creating discord and unhealthy conflict within the team and the outcome of the project may suffer.
Diversity in teams can lead to communication challenges. However, it enhances productivity as members are able to bring in divers perspectives and opinions on the project.
Diversity enhances team performance by bringing in a wider range of perspectives and problem-solving approaches. However, it can lead to communication challenges and decision making can be very slow. To get the benefits of diversity, it is essential to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Diverse teams are ideal for complex, emergency, or remote projects where innovative problem-solving and adaptability are crucial.
However, for physical, long-term, simple, and predictable projects, a homogenous team with shared language and cultural background can be more effective.
My point is to embrace diversity, especially in today’s digital world where building trust and collaboration skills are essential to harness the strengths of diverse teams. By working together and valuing diverse perspectives, we can achieve better outcomes and drive success.
