Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

Change has its positive and negative effects on my organization, but change is constant and must happen we can only adjust to its demands, While some change in science and technology like communication, inventions, scientific discoveries, software development have helped to foster, growth and efficiency some like AI development have threatened to reduce manpower, thereby increasing efficiency but reducing manpower.
However on the other side, social and political change are having a major impact on the organization, while the growth is been stalled by the political dynamics of the world ranging from policies to execution of the said policies. While considering growth we would have to put in mind the effect on our environment, so more effort is put into going green using, renewable energy sources that will not be harmful to the environment, the improvement comes at a cost and most times a high one.
Competition on the other hand has caused a lot of change and improvement which are necessary for customers benefits and satisfaction
As a PM, the rapid technological advancements and how reliance on digital tools have increased has impacted our our organization as it has made protecting our users data and ensuring security crucial as any breach can affect our our organization reputation severely. Hence, our projects needs to be more agile to adapt to this sudden technological changes.
The evolving market has been more competitive, so we need to keep evolving so as to meet the markets demands, we also consider environmental sustainability, social responsibility and political shifts when carrying out projects as new governments laws and regulations can affect the directions of our projects.
As an Executive Assistant, I’ve seen firsthand how global issues impact our organization’s operations and projects. One of the biggest challenges we face is the rapid pace of technological change.
I recall a recent situation where our team had to quickly adapt to a new project management tool. The learning curve was steep, but we worked together to ensure a smooth transition. We also had to communicate the changes to our stakeholders, which required careful planning and execution.
Another global issue affecting our organization is the increasing demand for remote work and virtual communication. As an Executive Assistant, I’ve had to develop strategies for supporting our team members who work remotely, ensuring they have the tools and resources they need to stay productive.
These experiences have taught me the importance of being agile, adaptable, and proactive in responding to the complex challenges of our globalized world. By staying informed, collaborating with our team, and communicating effectively with stakeholders, we can navigate uncertainty and achieve success.
I would rather say that,
Global issues like technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis profoundly impact our NGO’s operations.
On a project manager’s angle, technological advancements offer opportunities to improve resource management and advocacy but may also pose challenges due to limited access or funding. Increased competition for funding and partnerships demands greater efficiency and innovation to sustain impact. Meanwhile, the environmental crisis directly escalates the need for our services, stretching resources and operational capacity. Adapting strategically to these dynamics is critical to fulfilling our mission effectively.
Considering technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis, I as a project manager must embrace digital transformation, ensure data security, stay agile and innovative, meet customer expectations, comply with regulations, align with social values, adopt sustainable practices, and plan for environmental risks to navigate challenges and seize opportunities effectively.
Becoming a project manager I ought to focus on what these global technologies will bring about impact to my organisation and quickly apply them… That way I could be efficient at my field

Change can be positive or negative.
New technologies: it has brought positive change and negative change .positive change;it makes work more easier and done easily and even more faster. Negative change; it renders individuals unemployed.
Social and political crisis Environmental crisis affect the production and outcome of projects.
Competition: the complex world makes it easy for healthy competition among companies
The world is evolving everyday. Global crisis is on the increase and they have a great impact on an organization’s project.
They have an effect on the budget/resources implemented for a project by causing constraints (such as a frozen budget which can limit a project resources). It can lead to economic instability which can affect the chain disruption and affect the project timeline.
Natural disaster can damage/destroy project infrastructure i.e building, equipment and transport system. It can also pose a risk to employee safety. Political instability can lead to change in regulations, law or politics that affect project operations.
