~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  6. Impact of Global Issues on My Organization and Projects

In today’s rapidly evolving world, global issues like technology, competition, political change, and environmental crises have a direct impact on how we plan and execute projects in my organization.

    1. Technology
Technology has improved the way we deliver healthcare education and services, especially through digital health tools, e-learning, and remote monitoring. However, it also requires continuous upskilling and adaptation, which can be challenging in low-resource settings.

    2. Competition
The demand for quality healthcare services has led to increased competition among institutions. This pushes us to innovate and maintain high standards in both education and patient care, but it also places pressure on limited resources and staff.

    3. Social and Political Change
Changes in government policies or instability can delay funding, shift project priorities, or disrupt outreach programs. We’ve had to redesign some community health projects due to sudden policy changes or strikes.

    4. Environmental Crisis
The rise in climate-related health issues (e.g., heat-related illnesses, waterborne diseases) has forced our organization to rethink project strategies and prioritize environmental health awareness in our community programs.

    Reflection

As a nurse educator involved in community-based projects, I’ve seen firsthand how global dynamics shape the local context. Staying agile, informed, and ethically grounded helps us manage these challenges while still delivering meaningful outcomes.

  7. In my current project, which focuses on adolescent nutrition and healthy living, I’ve seen firsthand how global issues like technology, environmental crises, and social change directly impact project planning and delivery. For instance, environmental challenges such as food insecurity and climate change force us to rethink how we implement nutri-gardening initiatives and ensure sustainability.

Technology has been a double-edged sword—while it allows us to gather and manage data more efficiently, we must also be cautious about ethical concerns like data privacy and accessibility in underserved communities. Social and political factors, such as changing health policies and local governance, also require us to stay adaptive and inclusive in our approach.

These experiences have taught me that successful project management now demands not only technical knowledge but also a strong ethical compass and awareness of global trends.

  8. As a project manager, Both the linear and iterative approaches are skills we ought to develop as we live in a world where change is constant…and it is through this change, we’re able to face challenges and become creative, innovative. This change also offers different opportunities for growth and we develop problem solving skills, as there are opportunities In every obstacle that comes our way.

  9. I work in the Crypto industry where uncertainty thrives and there can be a policy or a trend change anytime so I’ve grown to use more of agile approaches as our goals and strategies can change anytime and using the agile methodology helps stay on course to achieve what we want to achieve.
