~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. The world is changing and so are we all. Every change comes with a range of complexity and how we respond to them individually or organisationally determines how we manage such complexity.

  2. As the world is constantly evolving and changing everyday, every project manager should move with it. We should have it in my mind to be flexible in decision making and not rigid.

  3. My name is Linda Onyekwuru and I am in Cohort 26, team 6. so far, the lectures have been insightful. I am beginning to understand why and how things need to be done. As a project personnel, I use any of the model that best fits the project at hand.

  4. Technology Advancements: New technologies can revolutionize project management practices, improving efficiency but also requiring teams to adapt quickly. Organizations must decide whether to integrate emerging tools like AI, automation, or cloud-based collaboration systems.
Global Competition: Increased competition drives businesses to optimize resources, reduce costs, and innovate rapidly. Project managers must balance efficiency with strategic planning to stay competitive.
Social and Political Change: Shifts in regulations, public sentiment, or geopolitical tensions can impact project timelines and objectives. For example, changes in labor laws or trade policies may require adjustments in project execution.
Environmental Crisis: Sustainability has become a priority, pushing organizations to consider eco-friendly project designs, resource management, and compliance with environmental regulations.

With the evolution of technology and modern development in politics, as a pm in politics adapting to this changes has yielded positive outcomes. This either of adaptable and effective communication has always paved way for execution of projects or ideas.

  7. As someone coming newly into project management, I only have experience as a virtual assistant. Globalisation has made it easier to work from home and anywhere for anyone around the world, which makes the pay higher when dealing with currencies like dollars or euros. As AI comes around, you have to either learn how to use it or you will be left behind. A scare is that AI has come to take our roles, but it is not so. If you learn how to use it effectively for your work, it can’t replace you. An example of the use of AI as a virtual assistant is the use of Zapier for automation.

  8. Technology
How it affects: new technologies disrupting the industry, AI, automation, or data analytics make project processes easier and stress free.
    Competition
How it affects: Globalization means increased competition not just locally, but internationally.
    Political Change
How it affects: Policy changes, instability, or government regulations can either support or hinder your work.
    Environmental Crisis

one example would be the COVID-19 pandemic, it had to halt me and my team members from being able to continue the projects in person, we had to result to communication tools and video calls to handle things like stand up meetings and status update meetings, and it increased the budget but fortunately the contingency and buffer handled the budget and the time that was supposed to be wasted but the major problem was not being able to help my team in person, especially face to face conversations where you understand what your team members might need in terms of emotional support or motivation to be able to go on with a particular project
