~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Global issues like technology, competition, social, and political changes affects every organization, let’s look at political changes, the Government leaders influences the cost of things in the market, which brings risks on your budget. Technology changes introducing materials or equipments that makes some jobs to be done easier and faster, saving money and energy for the organization and at the same time creating fear in the heart of employees who specialized in those areas thereby creating less of job opportunities in the society. Social changes is creating avenue for us explore, communicate easily, advertise easily, work smartly but producing people who so much relay on social media, neglecting their ability because they believe that, I can ask Google, AI and so on. Competition in the market has positive and negative effects in the society or people. Most production organizations no longer concentrate on quality but quantity because they believe that majority cannot afford the quality and producing the quality will make you sell less than others. They affect positively because when they bring the quantity to the market people buys easily not minding if it’ll spoil quick or not.
So putting all of these together makes the world complicated because when you want quality you spend much and when you go for quantity you spend always. To survive in this kind of world you must be critical thinker to enable you figure out at every situation what to do in other to achieve the best.

  2. As a university undergraduate, I would say that the global issues affect my educational institute and my own learning as well both positively and negatively.
Starting with Technology now, advance in technology gives student unlimited access to study materials and also makes learning easy but at the same time it produces students who are over dependent on technology for the assignments, school activities and project, it creates a form of less of creative thinking in students as they are overly dependent on it.
Political change actually does good to students but frequent change of power areas leads to unfinished and abandoned projects, civil unrest within the campus and many other things.
These global issues stand as both an advantageous effect and adverse effect but as project managers we make use of these advantages and manage the disadvantages to reduce the level of damages. If damages cannot be avoided. Thank you.

  4. Technology— Rapid change can make products/processes obsolete, forcing organisations to continuously adapt or risk falling behind competitors.

Competition— Global rivals, price pressure, and market shifts can change project priorities or render them redundant mid-delivery.

Social & Political Change — Shifting values, demographics, regulations, and government policy reshape what projects are viable, how teams operate, and what compliance demands must be met.

Environmental Crisis— Climate risks, sustainability regulations, and resource scarcity raise costs, disrupt supply chains, and force organisations to embed green thinking into every project.
organisations must stay agile and scan their environment constantly to keep projects aligned with a fast-changing world.

  5. Projects are in inevitably directly or indirectly affected by these factors, a change in government, technology advancement, competition and other societal issues might adjust the policies, regulations, processes guiding the execution of a project and also affect project deliverables. There’s need to adopt a flexible mindset to address changes and challenges

  6. These global issues affect my studies and the kind of projects I work on as a student. Technology makes learning and project work easier, but it also means I have to keep learning new tools. Competition pushes me to do better and improve my performance. Social and political changes can affect academic schedules, policies, and resources available for learning. Environmental issues also make me more aware of sustainability in the way I approach projects.
Overall, I’ve learned that even as a student, these factors influence how I plan, learn, and complete my projects, so I need to stay flexible and adaptable.

  7. Big global issues such as technology, competition, social, and political change affect organizations and projects by influencing how teams work, communicate, make decisions, manage risks, and deliver results. Technology drives innovation and efficiency, competition increases the need for quality and adaptability, social change shapes stakeholder expectations and work culture, while political changes impact policies, regulations, funding, and project stability. Together, these factors require organizations to remain flexible, strategic, and responsive to change.

  8. Change is inevitable and adaptability is key to remaining relevant in a complex world. Sometimes changes happen slow, other times very fast but the ability to catch up is what separates winners from losers. Let’s take AI as an example. Companies that embrace and harness the power of AI have a more productive edge over those that are slow to adapt.
