Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

Yes, three most important issues defining modern life; globalization, politics and technology. These three has changed the lifestyle of many, including individuals, organizations, and governments across the world, implicating on work culture, environment social and economic impact.
Thinking about those big global issues, such as technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis, ask yourself how do these affect my organisation and my projects?
As a leader of vision with an eagle eye,
I believe competition will help in a more deliberate way to help employees to increased productivity in meeting up with the ever societal change which will make my organization shift focus to a particular targeted clients to satisfy our clients and keeps up with the reputation of the organization while technology will have impact by improving the quality of service rendered.
Environmental crisis – the condition and state of the situated environment area will cause organizations to adapt to the government regulation policies which sometimes might limit the operation of the organization.
In the primary academic sector, which includes elementary and middle schools, complexities can arise from various factors:
1.Diverse Student Needs: Students have different learning styles and abilities, making it challenging for teachers to provide personalized education.
2.Curriculum and Standardization: Balancing standardized curriculum with the need for individualized instruction can be complex.
3.Parental Involvement: Involving parents in a child’s education can be challenging, as their engagement levels vary.
4.Limited Resources: Primary schools often face resource constraints, such as funding and classroom space.
5.Teaching Methods: Educators must use diverse teaching methods to meet the needs of all students.
6.Child Development: Understanding and accommodating the developmental stages of children adds complexity to teaching strategies.
7.Assessment and Evaluation: Fairly assessing student progress while considering their diverse abilities is a complex task.
8.Inclusive Education: Ensuring that children with different abilities are included in regular classrooms can be a challenge.
These complexities require educators, parents, and policymakers to work together to create effective and inclusive learning environments for primary students.
In the baking industry where I operate, and in a country like Nigeria with so much uncertainty and instability that has forced several companies out of business, there is so much to say about the impacts of these global issues.
Technology: I am tempted to say that this is the only positive thing that has happened to any baker, as it has made available tons of information and ideas on how a baker can constantly improve and/or innovate, as well as stay afloat of competition.
Competition: There is so much glut in the bread industry, that is, the saturation of the space with too many players, which means very tough competition among bakers. Hence, there is a need to constantly think of ways to both challenge and to be different from the competitors.
Social and Political changes: these have very terrible impacts on businesses in Nigeria, and the baking industry is no exception. From the numerous and senseless fees and levies imposed on businesses by government arms to the prices of raw materials steadily going up, it leaves one with so much uncertainty and, many times, confusion about how to achieve product quality and the best pricing at the same time.
Environmental problems: from climate changes to the bad roads that make transporting bread from the bakery to sellers difficult, these and many more also impact greatly on the daily operations of our bakery business.
As a government worker communication has greatly improved and increase our daily work efficiency as most of our equipment’s were base on mechanized. It alters the culture by providing more real-time data on the performance of equipment in the field today, allowing fabricators to consider improvements that can be achieved in months through data algorithms rather than years or decades.
In conformity Assessment practice, Changing technology influence the approach to inspections , certifications and testing significantly, new tools and methods , softwares are available for managing tasks and projects . Assessments and evaluation that used to be carried out physically on-site are now carried out by use of virtually with it draw-backs and benefits.
The crisis of the environment creates new challenges for achieving the net zero target (SDG) of environmental performance especially in Africa still struggling with effective frameworks for measuring and monitoring environmental pollution and imbibing practices that enhance a performing environment.
Global complexity also puts forward the need for review of standards to accommodate the realities of multi-faceted risks and opportunities associated with the changes and responsively attain sustained success by organizations and interest groups.
In my Agribusiness, i have the following to say:
1. Technology: Technological advancements such as precision farming, automation, and data analytics have significantly impacted the agribusiness sector. These technologies have improved productivity, efficiency, and sustainability in farming practices. To stay competitive, agribusiness organizations need to adopt and integrate such technologies into their operations.
2. Competition: Globalization has increased competition in the agribusiness sector. Organizations face challenges from both domestic and international competitors. This requires agribusiness organizations to constantly innovate, adapt to changing market demands, and develop strategies to differentiate their products and services.
3. Social and political change: Social and political changes can influence consumer preferences, regulations, and government policies related to agriculture and food production. Agribusiness organizations must stay informed about these changes and adapt accordingly. For example, shifting consumer preferences towards organic and sustainable products may require changes in farming practices or transitioning to alternative production methods.
4. Environmental crisis: The environmental crisis, including climate change and resource depletion, has direct implications for agribusiness organizations. Agriculture is highly dependent on natural resources such as water, land, and biodiversity. Climate change can impact crop yields, pest and disease patterns, and overall production systems. Agribusiness organizations must develop sustainable practices, implement technologies for efficient resource utilization, and mitigate environmental impacts to ensure long-term viability.
Overall, these global issues require agribusiness organizations to be proactive, adaptive, and responsible. Embracing technology, staying competitive, being aware of social and political dynamics, and addressing environmental challenges are crucial for success and long-term sustainability in the industry.
Political issues within the politics
Political changes- New policies.
Technology – Getting access to and getting a hang of new technologies to speed up productivity.
Competition- Being innovative enough to avoid copying others and still remain relevant in the ever changing industry.
All these affect projects and Project Management.
The use of technology has really helped in my organization, from identifying previous dilemmas and getting solutions to them to advertisement of our products, it has also helped in doing better to have an edge over our competitions which in turn motivates our employees, make them put in more efforts, and achieve better results.
Addressing challenges has become markedly less arduous with the contemporary strides in technology. Solutions can now be readily procured from a myriad of perspectives, thus highlighting the pivotal role our contemporary milieu plays in the realm of efficient project management.
