Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

In the past, private schools worked independently, each according to the desires of the founders once some basic government requirements were met.
That is no longer the case as the following impacts greatly on my organization:
1. Technology: It is now compulsory for schools to incorporate technology into their curriculum at a general and individual level. ICT subjects are required as learners have to be compliant, otherwise it affects ability of the school to retain students. During Covid-19, only technological advanced schools were able to remain in business because of restrictions on physical interactions.
2. Competition: There are many schools which are offering various additional services to draw parents to them. Any school worth her salt now has to be at par or ahead of competitors in order to remain profitable.
3. Social/Political Changes: Many households in Nigeria are struggling with economic and social issues. Families are structuring their lifestyles to meet the realities. This is affecting schools as more parents can no longer afford to retain their kids in very expensive schools.
4. Environmental Problems: In my school, children who come from far places are being withdrawn to school closer to home. Also, when it rains heavily, many of them can’t move out of their homes due to flooding and bad roads.
As a worker in the health sector… Technology has affected the health sector in such a way that all equipment are now technologically inclined …there are new and modern facility which has made work easier, faster and more effective and accurate. .. Tests and some Operation are carried out today using modern technology, making it less complex and more efficient.
Competition.. As the world is changing, lots of companies and individual has venture into the health sector investing huge in first class and top notch health care delivery ..this has made it more competitive for my organization to step up their games
Social and political changes such as regulations of government policy, union policies and other has left the health sector to have lots to deal with of late… starting with government not meeting the needs of health workers to union embarking on strike actions and so on
environmental Crises…with the rate of climate change and global warming,, the health sector has had to deal with alot of problem , from pandemic, outbreak of disease, and so on, this has taken a toll on both the man power and resources making it complex to deal wit..

How do the challenges of volatility and uncertainty affect your organisation? And how do these challenges present themselves in projects?
For instance, if the church is planning a missions trip to a remote location, volatility and uncertainty can affect this project. This is because the church may face volatility in the form of unexpected changes in the political or economic situation of the country they are traveling to, which could affect the travel plans or safety. They may also face uncertainty in terms of not knowing exactly what the needs of the community they are serving will be, or how their efforts will be received. These challenges could result in the church needing to change their plans, adjust their budget, or even cancel the trip altogether.

I work with a technical college, where we have combination of sponsored trainee and paying trainees. Recent governmental policy on fuel affected the trainees and staff badly and this just describe how policies of government get to affect businesses and projects.
I currently work in the HR department of a Christian organization and there are lots of different factors to consider. One thing that comes to mind is how the rise of technology has impacted the way that organizations like ours operate and recruit employees. With the advent of social media and online platforms, it’s now easier than ever for organizations to reach out to potential employees and spread their message. However, there are also challenges associated with this, such as the need to navigate complex privacy and security issues.
Another issue that’s worth considering is how global competition is changing the labor market. In recent years, the global labor market has become more competitive as companies look to cut costs and find the best talent. This has led to increased competition for jobs, as well as pressure on salaries and benefits. For Christian organizations, this means that they need to be even more strategic in their approach to HR and talent acquisition. It is highly important to find ways to stand out from the crowd and attract the best candidates.
Whilst for the social and political change, which is a particularly relevant issue for Christian organizations, as many of them are involved in advocacy and activism. The current political climate has created challenges for organizations that are trying to navigate the changing landscape. It is important to be aware of these changes and adapt accordingly. For example, some organizations may need to adapt their policies and practices to comply with new laws or regulations. This can be a complex and time-consuming process, but it is essential to remain compliant and avoid any legal issues.
The advent of technology and current political policies have affected us both positively and negatively. As an organization, we strive earnestly to meet up with the reality, by being updated at all times despite challenges.
