~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Technology has made great advancement to every organisation that embraces. With Technology, improvement becomes easier. With everyday competitors/competition, you can rely on Technology to meet up with current trends and competition in your industry.

  2. Global issues such as technology could affect my organisation as we benefit from the breakthrough of technology. Jobs that are done manually are now done with the help of technology. Where we face challenge in competing with technology, we develop new products and services that have kept us in business.

Political changes/decisions affect organisations. The policies they implement often affect how organisation runs. Because of the inconsistent nature of politics, we monitor legislative bills closely to prepare for potential changes. There were times when contracts were either terminated or tanked as a result of political change(s).

Social factors such as where people live, personal values and social status affect what, where and why people make decisions. We take social factors into consideration when developing our services.

Competition as factor can be ruled out completely. Some organisations around engage in the same line of business. What we do is to ensure our services are topnotch to stay relevant to our customers. We identify and evaluate our successes and challenges, thereby learning what to incorporate into our processes and how to prevent revenue loss.

    1. Environment challenges particularly climate change is an issue in my field (agriculture) and technology has also come a long way to solving some of the challenges. For instance deploying climate smart agriculture.
In some cases, social issues like farmers-herdsmen clashes cause some level of disruption in farm project

  3. As a business owner, we’ve taken environmental crisis into account as the company is being steered into producing environmentally friendly products. This means that different projects and systems were developed to reduce our impact on the environment with the new products.

    1. As an entrepreneur, an issue such as social and political change highly affects the movement of the market. This is because such change can determine the price of a product sold due to inflation or deflation of prices.

    2. It’s important to note that technology itself is neutral; it can be used for both positive and negative purposes. The impact on development and war depends on how it is harnessed and regulated by governments, organizations, and individuals; competition on the other hand is the fuel to Innovation. The absence of competition will lead to impoverishment, monopoly and consumption of inferior and harmful products.

  4. As a development practitioner, big global issues, such as technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis affect my Organization in the development sector and my projects in the following ways:

    1. Technology is rapidly changing the way organizations work in the development sector. The use of digital tools and platforms has become increasingly important for managing projects, communicating with stakeholders, and collecting data. However, keeping up with the latest technology can be expensive and time-consuming, which can impact an organization’s ability to deliver effective programs.

    2. The development sector is becoming increasingly competitive, with many organizations vying for limited resources. Competition can lead to increased pressure on organizations to deliver results quickly and efficiently, which can sometimes result in corners being cut or programs being rushed.

    3. Social and political changes can impact the development sector in many ways, including impacting the availability of funding, changing the needs of communities, and shifting the priorities of governments and donors. Organizations must remain agile and be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

    4. The environmental crisis is a critical issue facing the world, and it has significant implications for the development sector. Climate change, natural disasters, and environmental degradation can all impact the effectiveness of development programs. Organizations must consider the impact of environmental issues on their projects and work to incorporate sustainability into their programs.

  5. A PM must have to embrace the complexities of this ever changing world in regards to technology, competition, social and political change, and the humanitarian/environmental crisis etc A PM has to master skills of approaching projects from different angles in whatever context presented to them. With a mindset of ‘change’, you are bound to adapt to whatever situation with your ethics to guide you through

  6. These global issues significantly impact project management by influencing the tools and technologies used, project strategies adopted to stay competitive, adaptation to regulatory changes and societal expectations, and incorporation of environmental sustainability practices. Project managers must be aware of these challenges and proactively address them to ensure successful project outcomes.

  7. With the break-out of corona virus which makes everyone to think outside the box and which led to the new normal work environment, it affected my office and the way we worked, so we have to device another way of seeing our customers to complete our various businesses with them.

With the advent of technology especially in software development, we had to change our way of sending physical statement of account to clients to online, customers get their statements via email and any enquiry or complaints are being sent via the software, hence the use of paper reduced drastically and invariable reduce our cost of operation including payroll cost as we had to cut down staff strength.

  8. Change in new technology, social and political change, competition etc. can affect how projects functions and deliverables in terms of deadline, as the global issues have affects every organizations.

    – New Technology: With change in new technologies, there are vast opportunities for every organization to key into the innovation as it gives you an edge and increases productivity.

  10. As a student union leader, I need to consider how major global issues impact our organization and the projects we undertake. Here’s how these issues affect us:

    1. Technology: The rapid advancement of technology has a significant impact on how we engage with students, manage events, and communicate. Embracing digital tools and platforms is crucial to enhance our outreach, improve member engagement, and streamline administrative processes.

    2. Competition: Increased competition among student organizations means we must be more innovative and strategic in our project planning. We need to differentiate our initiatives to attract and retain student members.

    3. Social and Political Change: Shifts in social and political dynamics can influence student interests and priorities. Staying aware of these changes is essential for aligning our projects with the evolving needs and concerns of our student community.

    4. Environmental Crisis: Environmental concerns, like sustainability and climate change, are becoming increasingly important for student organizations. Incorporating eco-friendly practices and projects into our activities aligns with global environmental goals and resonates with environmentally conscious students.

In light of these factors, I must stay informed, adapt to change, and use project management approaches that are responsive to uncertainty and shifting dynamics in the educational and social environment. We may need to balance traditional project management methods with agile approaches to remain adaptable and effective in a complex and ever-changing world.
