~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

In Event planning the impact of technology, competition, social and political changes and environmental problems is significant and can influence various aspects of event management
*Technology: Enables event planners to reach a broader audience through the online marketing, social media, and email campaigns.
*Competition: Competition drives event planners to innovate and create unique event experiences to attract attendees.
*Social and political changes: changing social and political environment may impact event safety and security measures, such as crowd control and emergency response planning.
*Environmental problems:environmental concerns drive the demand for eco-friendly event planning, involving reduced waste, energy conservation and sustainable sourcing.
Events planners must stay attunde to these factors, adapt their strategies and consider their impact on every design, logistics and budgeting.

  2. As a business development consultant, technology has helped the space so much. There is ease of registering businesses because everything is done online including collection of certificates. The rigours have been removed, time is saved, lives are saved because prior to now, we used to drive a distance of more than two hours to and fro to process these registrations.
Because of technology, I organize business trainings online without necessarily having my audience gather in a physical event.

This however, has increased the competition in the business. A lot of people both trained and untrained are into the business of company registration. One can easily go online, learn the process and start the business though without proper coaching you will learn the hard way. The real consultants still have the edge because we do a lot more for businesses than registration.

Governance affect the social, political and environmental terrain which impacts businesses directly. When the policies are business friendly, we inform businesses through trainings about these good policies and opportunities that can help their businesses grow. When it is the other way round, you see people reluctant to do business let alone attend trainings. Businesses do badly ultimately.

  3. Technology, Competition, Social, political and environmental factors all affect projects and organizations. They affect the budget, quality and timeline of a project, and also determine if a project is valuable and acceptable to the consumer. They can either create opportunities or threats for an organization.

  4. Global issues like technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis is having significant impacts on my organisation slum regeneration authorities and their projects. Below are how they affect slum regeneration:
1.Technology: Technology has empower slum regeneration authorities with tools such as software and equipment’s for better planning, design, communication, data analysis and project immplementation and evaluation. On the other hand, rapid technological change has made us to adapt to new ones constantly, which is a big challenge and resource-constrain for the authorities.
    2. Competition: As slum regeneration projects become more crucial current issue of the day, competition for resources and support has increased. Authorities have to demonstrate their effectiveness and efficiency through public awareness, inviting NGOs/international donors, initiating public/private partnership projects and formulating policies and grassroots projects for government to secure funding and public support.
    3. Social and Political Change: Changes in social and political landscapes has affected the priorities and policies related to slum regeneration. Change in political climates has one-way or the other advance or hinder regeneration efforts, and this social dynamics has great impact on the ongoing and proposed projects of the authority.
    4. Environmental Crisis: Environmental challenges like climate change has direct effect on slum areas through flooding, extreme weather, and resource scarcity. Although, the authority intervention projects being carried out with sustainable practices in the regeneration areas is mitigating these risks.
In summary, the slum regeneration authorities is staying abreast of global issues and adapting to climatic effects and also ensuring the success and sustainability of it’s projects. It’s essential to note that the authority is flexible, innovative, and responsive to these challenges.

  5. Technology keeps evolving and this has affected the educational sector as this has brought more advanced way of transmitting knowledge to learners and better equip the tutor . And makes learning more simple, less tasking and fun.

  6. looking at the global scope today the world has come to a place everything is connected and once there is a crisis it affects everything that how close the world has become.

  7. The evolution of technology has brought a lot of changes in the human race. Today, there’s alot of competition as a result of the present of technology.

Many analogue news channels have shifted to digital news media, most businesses are online. Our phones can be used to create whatever content we want with some softwares installed in it.
As a project manager, one needs to follow the trends and innovations and not remain static. Because change is a constant thing.

However, the global crisis has brought unrest to many nations. Russian and Ukraine has been at the war front with one another for almost nine months, not to forget Israel and Hamas recent war crisis as well. All these issues has affected many nations, their businesses and professions badly.

Currently, naira has depreciated. The cost of living is high in Nigeria to be precise, people are surviving by grace. All these issues have brought about social and political changes and has affected my organization and current project poorly.

  8. as a digital financial personnel competition has really helped evolve the digital industry especially in Liberia where it is a two horse race but the biggest winner is mtn Liberia with 65% of the market share. more over competition have lead to more addition of services to the system….

  9. Current global crisis from Russia/Ukraine war to the war between Israel/Hamas has caused hike in gas prices and food. This hike and shortages cause an automatic escalation in cost of good in Nigeria thereby affecting small businesses. However, technology has provided ways in which businesses and people can mitigate this risks and loss, by providing access to information when needed, simplified modes of accessing information.

  10. The advent of Technology has made execution of projects easy compare to days of less technological development, Technology enhances work and help to minimize time and resources used in executing a project.
Polical changes affect project management in a bad way especially the developing African countries, where government changes policies without considering the effects of the decision on the economy, thereby affecting the execution of projects
